Kia ora Koutou, Welcome back, I hope you had a great break. Term 3 is a busy term for our school, a key building block for academic success, as well as an opportunity for us to shout about the great environment that our school offers for students and community. Coming up soon we have our road shows going out to our feeder schools to give them a taste of what our school is about. One of the key dates for parents to note is our Open Night on 19 August from 5 - 8 pm. We cordially invite all members of our community to this event to have a look around, engage with some of our students and staff and enjoy our hospitality for this period of time. Please put this date in your diary, and pass on to anyone you think may be interested in enrolling, we would love to see you here. We then have our Open Day on 23 September where students interested in enrolling come in and participate in various activities across our entire curriculum. Subject Choice evening on 4 August is an opportunity for students and whanau to talk about their pathways, where our Teachers in Charge will be available to discuss and clarify what their department offers. This is a really important event to ensure that students have all the information needed to make the best choice for their future. (further details of these events page 4). A reminder that we have a Teacher only Day coming up on 11 August. (further details on page 3). We are making headway with our main entrance and reception up-grade and are on schedule. You can still find all the help and information you need at our student reception. We apologise for any inconvenience and will keep you informed of our progress. Hope to see you all soon, have a great weekend. Ngā mihi

Voice of Rangatahi Survey Sport Bay of Plenty has been circulating an online survey with secondary school students across the region. The following information will explain how and why we are conducting the survey at Rotorua Lakes High School. Why are we surveying Rangatahi (Young People)? Young people are important to us, and experiences during secondary school years can inspire or discourage a life-long involvement in physical activity. We want to ensure that rangatahi have great sport, physical activity and active recreation experiences at school and the more you know about a population group, the better placed you are to provide opportunities and experiences that meet their needs, ultimately supporting a lifelong love of being active - we need to be making decisions that are informed by the audience who we are looking to cater for. Why will the survey be in schools? We want to find out what more can be done to support schools and teachers, and link schools to sport and recreation organisations in their communities. We are targeting secondary schools from across the country, so we have information from a cross-section of rangatahi across New Zealand. We want to survey all secondary school students and school is the best place to reach young people. Do schools have a say in how and when the survey is administered? Yes. The survey is circulated to students and is completed online. It is up to the school as to when and where the survey is completed. The survey has been set up, so it is easy for schools and students to take part at a time which is convenient for them. Data Protection Students will have their say but will not be identifiable down to the individual level. There is a section at the end of the survey that asks participants to voluntarily provide their name, date of birth and postcode. These details will enable the responses to be combined with other data held by Sport NZ and/or other agencies (e.g. Statistics NZ), but will be removed once this done (i.e. individuals will not be able to be identified). If for any reason you do not want your child to participate in the survey you are welcome to opt your child out of taking part. To opt your child at Rotorua Lakes High out please email: lizzyg@sportbop.co.nz

ATTENDANCE EVERY DAY MATTERS!
Regularly attending school really matters, right from the first days at primary school to the end of secondary school. Ensuring that students are at school at 8.45am ready to learn, means that children have every opportunity to learn and participate in school. Attending school is key to setting our young people up for life, as well as being required by law. If your child is under 16 years old, they must go to school every day, unless they are sick. Getting a qualification is one of the main building blocks for success, and regular attendance at school makes all the difference. If a child or young person stops attending school regularly, it becomes harder for them to stay connected to school friends and teachers, and harder to catch up with work they have missed.
___________________________________________________________________________ SUBJECT INFORMATION EVENING Students in years 10-12 are currently considering their subject choices for next year. They have received a booklet to help them in this process. Staff have been discussing this with them over the last week. Subject information is available through SCHOOLPOINT. Next Wednesday 4th August we are holding a subject information evening for whanau and students. This is being held in the Auditorium from 4-6pm. Staff from all the departments will be present to discuss what their department offers and answer any questions you might have. To access our Subject Choice Advice booklet please click on this link https://www.rotorualakes.school.nz/wp-
content/uploads/2020/06/Subject-Choice-Advice-2020.pdf We will be using schoolpoint (the same one we used for parent interviews) for students to select their subjects. This will not be turned on until the day of the open evening Wednesday 4 August to encourage the students to have conversations about their choice. Students will be able to make their selections after planning their course and talking with their teachers and whanau. We ask that parents "OK" their child's choices through their login to school point (instructions below). HOD's will then confirm the student has made the prerequisites or is likely to make the prerequisites of the course they have chosen. At the option evening we will have some devices available for families to use. If you need any help logging into or using schoolpoint please contact Ms McLeod or Mrs Walker mcleodd@rotorualakes.school.nz walkerb2@rotorualakes.school.nz or 07 345 6124.
How to approve your child’s courses: 1. 2. 3. 4.
