CONTENTS From the Principal – P. 1 News from Teachers – P. 2 - 3 Student Successes – P. 4 – 5 Sport – P. 5 - 6 Notice Board – P. 7

Kia ora Koutou, This week I have had the pleasure of attending the Secondary Schools Principal’s Conference in Queenstown. Thank you to Deputy Principal Mrs Pani McLean for stepping in as Acting Principal. The school was in very safe hands. It was great to see our students heading off to Wellington for the History & Economics Trip recently. It was a unique opportunity for our students to experience firsthand our parliament at work in the Beehive. They also had a fantastic day visiting Government House and the exhibitions at Te Papa and many more! Thank you to our teachers for organizing this wonderful and highly beneficial trip. Also, a huge thank you to Pub Charity Ltd for their generous funding which enabled our students to travel to Wellington. (further details on page 4). Our House Group’s competitive challenges were a huge success. Close and exciting games of football, and basketball, to name but a few. Well done to all our students. As always, a big thank you to our Heads of House for putting in the hard work in organizing these events. I would like to ask for your help. Firstly, can I ask caregivers to remind students that intervals and lunchtimes are there for them to use the toilets if needed. Taking time out of teaching and learning disrupts not only the student leaving, but also others in the room. When we reach NCEA our students have to focus and sit for 3 hours of assessment. It’s important that our students can learn to sit for one hour in classes without the need to head out of the room. I would also like to say that I am aware some students have specific needs to be out of class at a given time, and this focus on staying in class and minimising disruption will not impinge on their ability to have their needs met. Thank you for your continuing support. We have an extra day to look forward to this weekend. Have a great Monday off and enjoy the break. Ngā mihi,

Jon Ward, Principal/Tumaki

STUDENT SUCCESSES ___________________________________________________________________________ FANTASTIC YEAR 12 TRIP TO WELLINGTON In week 2 of this term, 29 Year 12 History and Economics students and 2 staff travelled to Wellington. This trip is taken annually and allows students to visit places of National interest as well as to explore possible career pathways. Students also gathered evidence as part of NCEA level 2 assessments. Luckily this year the weather held and the country had moved to orange so the students were able to make the most of their visits to Parliament, Government House, the Reserve Bank and the University just to name a few. We are extremely grateful to Pub Charity Ltd, whose support of this trip in the form of funding the bus made it possible for the trip to go ahead. Without their support, the increased costs of fuel and food would have made it impossible. A great time with great students. Thank you to everyone!😍🥰🤩🤩🤩

___________________________________________________________________________ WAKA AMA Last Saturday we entered a mixed team in a local regatta at Lake Okareka 5 km race. As our Secondary Schools Nationals were cancelled due to covid, we wanted our paddlers to experience some racing. Due to winter sports commitments and work, we struggled for numbers so made up our team with whānau members.

They were in the adult mixed novice section and our 3 students Capryce Proctor, Pipi Uhl and Jay Ward Shaw, had a fantastic race. They also got to use our new paddles and lifejackets that we purchased with Tumanawa Funding. We are waiting for the official results, but are confident we were either 1st or 2nd in their division!! HUGE WELL DONE TO ALL.

A special thanks to whanau, Sarah Uhl, Maurice Pomare and Stacey Pomare for making it happen and with such fun😊 😊

___________________________________________________________________________ 1ST XI BOYS HOCKEY The boys 1st XI hockey team got their season underway with a tight 1-0 win against Western Heights 1st XI. The game started well and the boys enjoyed some good possession and although we had some good passing and teamwork we couldn’t quite string the plays together to get in the Heights circle and pressure their defense. It wasn’t until the third quarter that Ethan Hoggard managed to score our first goal of the season with a sneaky reverse stick that the goalie failed to pick up. The boys then held out for the rest of the game to secure the win. We had a number of new players on debut for the 1st XI including Ethan Partelow who picked up our player of the day for his solid work through the game. Well done to our boys 🤩😃😀

___________________________________________________________________________ MIXED HOCKEY An awesome game last Thursday night with a 1-0 Lose. The team played their hearts out and had heaps of fun. The players linked well and have a fantastic season ahead. Stevie Lockwood was player of the day for awesome defensive play. Well done to all.🤩😃😀
