TOUR OF THE CHURCH: Please enter by the front door of the church. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church is a parish in the Diocese of Knoxville, which was established September 8, 1988. Bishop Anthony J. O'Canadi was appointed bishop on May 27, 1988, and he was ordained as our bishop on September 8, 1988. Bishop Joseph IL Kurtz was appointed as second bishop of the Diocese of Knoxville on October 26, 1999, and he was ordained on December 8, 1999. Bishop Richard Sdka, third bishop of the Diocese of Knoxville, was *ordained on March 19, 2009.
The Diocesan Shield was designed to show the mountains and riven of East Tennessee. The three red crosses represent the Dioceses in TennesseeMemphis, Nashville and from our Pope's shield; the dogwood dominates the hills and valleys of • this region of Tennessee and the miter worn by bishops is the insignia Knoxville. The gold • of a diocese of the Catholic Church. cross in the center is Pope Benedict XVI is the Spiritual Leader of the Catholic Church on earth. • He replaced Pope John Paul II, who had been pope since 1978. • Holy Water Fonts are at the entrances of the church. Holy water may be used ' by all and the water is to remind us of our baptism or our coming baptism. (Dip your fingers in the water-being mindful of your baptism-) and bless yourself "IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT," which expresses your belief in the Holy Trinity-GOD, THE FATHER, GOD THE SON AND GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT: ONE GOD IN THREE DIVINE PERSONS.) When you make the sign of the cross with the water, you are professing your faith in Jesus, who suffered and died for us and who arose from the dead in order that we may have eternal life-JESUS IS OUR SAVIOR! The Reconciliation Room is to the right Catholics receive this sacrament when they have separated themselves from God and from the community.
Page 2 Bulletin boards are on the walls to your left and right andlave pertinent information. As you continue your tour down the aisles, notice the statues of Mary and Jafeph. WE DO NOT WORSHIP MARY-OR JOSEPH as you sometimes hear. We worship the ONE LIVING GOD! We honor Mary because she was chosen by God. Mary said "yes" to God and we are to think about when was the last time we said "yes" to God. MARY IS
•THEMOTHEROFJESUS-JESUSISGOD-THEREFORE,MARY ISTHEMOTHEROFGOD!
Candles are burning at these statues because people have come here' to pray and have the candle burning for a loved one or for a problem in their lives. Candles represent Jesus as the Light of the World and people find comfort in leaving candles burning for special prayers to God. There are 3 focal points in the SANCTUARY of evely Catholic Church- the ALTAR, which represents Christ (and is the reason that We bow); the PULPIT which proclaims Christ and the PRESUME'S CHAIR which celebrates Christ As you approach the sanctuary, the CHOIR is to your left, and the BAPTISMAL FONT-where the Sacrament of Baptism is received-is to your right. We believe that baptism brings us into the Body of Christ, washes away our sins, and calls us to ministry. The large candle that is by the Baptismal Font is called the PASCHAL CANDLE. The Paschal Candle represents Jesus' life, death, resurrection and ascension into heaven. It is also called the EASTER CANDLE and is blessed at the Easter Vigil. JESUS IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD! ALPHA AND OMEGA is usually on the Paschal Candle and depicts Jesus ALWAYS WAS, IS AND WILL BE, and the incense in the form of a cross represents Jesus' 5 wounds.
Page 3 You will also notice the Presider's Chair which is the place for the priest who is celebrating mass with us.
The pulpit to the left is where the Wool of God is proclaimed. At the weekend masses there are 3 Scripture readings—one is usually from the Old Testament; one from the New Testament and one from one of the Gospels. A Psalm is sung in response to the first reading. We stand for the Gospel reading and ask God to always be in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. We now proceed to the SACRISTY which is the room where the vestments and sacred vessels are kept The color of the vestments follow the liturgical calendar—blue for ADVENT, purple for LENT, white for CHRISTMAS AND EASTER. Red is used when the mass being offered is for a martyr. And green is for ORDINARY TIME. Because the altar represents Christ, we bow before entering a pew, or coming into the sanctuary or when we pass the altar in our duties. On the right is the BLESSED SACRAMENT CHAPEL where the TABERNACLE—in which a ciborium is placed with the Hosts or Blessed Sacrament to provide Communion for the sick and the dying— is on a marble table. Kneelers and chairs are around the room where people may come at any time to pray. A RED SANCTUARY LAMP burns which indicates that the Blessed Sacrament is in the Tabernacle. We, as Catholics, believe in TRANSUBSTANTIATION—the changing of the bread and wine into the BODY AND BLOOD OF JESUS. We fru& believe that we receive Jesus in communion—THIS IS MY BODY, TAKE AND EAT; THIS IS MY BLOOD, TAKE AND DRINK—THIS IS JESUS!
Page 4
For those who are not as yet in full communion with us, we invite you to come in the Communion Procession and receive a blessing from the priest or minister. As you approach the priest or minister, cross your arms which Indicates that you want to receive a blessing. There is nothing magical about kneeling, sitting or standing—some of us are blessed to be able to do all three—and we want you to feel comfortable in worshiping with us. WE ARE A COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS IN JEWS CHRISTI

CHURCHFURNISHINGS We gather in our parish church to celebrate the eucharistic liturgy and to praise God. Special areas and furnishings in our churches remind us of Jesus' presence and help us to celebrate the sacraments. The focal point of every church building is the sanctuary, the area where the altar is placed and where the Eucharist is celebrated. • Although usually found at the front of the church', the sanctuary may alto be centrally located. It is ordinarily an elevatAd platform. The altar stands by itself so that ministers can move about it freely. And it'. is so placed that the celebrant faces the people wbile celebrating the Eucharist. The altar is covered with a linen cloth, arid on it Or near it are placed candles and a crucifix, though not in such a way as to obscure the celebrant at Mass. In the sanctuary are found seats for the • ministers, placed either behind the altar or to one side. •• which the scriptural lessons are read and from which the gospel is prodaimed. Placed on the pulpit is the Lectionary, a collection of • readings from the Bible that are arranged according to the liturgical year.

VESTMENTS In the early years of the Church, ministers at the altar wore clothes similar to those used in ordinary life. But when popular styles changed, the minicters continued to wear this dothibtof the early years, and it became liturgical clothing, or vestments. Today bishops, priests, and deacons continue to wear these special yeshnents at Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Priests and deacons wear a long white robe called an alb. Over the alb, around his heck, the priest wears a long strip of cloth called a stole. (A deacon also wears a stole Ike a sash over the left shoulder.) Over the alb and stole, the priest wears a large mantle-like vesmaen't called a chasuble. (On solemn Occasions, a deacon wears a similar vestment called a dalmatic.) The color of the vestments varies • according to the seasons and feasts of the Aturgical year. The Word of God October 4, 2009 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 10:2-16 The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Gospel of Mark. Glory to you Lord.
+ May the gospel always be on my mind, + on my lips, + and in my heart. The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a billthis commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a you of shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are man divor no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In the ce house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries and another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits dismi adultery." ss And her."people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus But saw this he became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom Jesu of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a s child told will not enter it." Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them. them The , Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. "Bec ause of the

Both give themselves definitively and totally to one another. They are no longer two; from now on they form one flesh. The covenant they freely contracted imposes on the spouses the obligation to preserve it as unique and indissoluble. Having become a child of God clothed with the wedding garment, the neophyte is admitted "to the marriage supper of the Lamb" and receives the food of the new life, the body and blood of Christ. The Eastern Churches maintain a lively awareness of the unity of Christian initiation by giving Holy Communion to all the newly baptized and confirmed, even little children, recalling the Lord's words: "Let the children come to me, do not hinder them." The Latin Church, which reserves admission to Holy Communion to those who have attained the age of reason, expresses the orientation of Baptism to the Eucharist by having the newly baptized child brought to the altar for the praying of the Our Father.
