We received over 330 gifts for our families which made Christmas Day very special. For 26 people this year! OLPH PIP Program: The parent involvement and Participation Program has logged in 3,404.89 volunteer hours that parents have so generously performed for the 1st half of the school year. We are very blessed to have such a commitment from our families. Volunteers are not paid-not because they are worthless-but because they are priceless. Natures Classroom: OLPH School is in the planning stages of developing Nature’s Classroom which will provide opportunities for students to make deeper connections with the natural world and inspire a lifelong sense of wonder. Many thanks to Matt Stovall for the planning and development of Nature’s classroom and to the K of C Council 610 for their generous donation to this project. IRISH MIDDLE SCHOOL WRESTLING – the Irish Wrestling Club is open to students in grades 1-8. the season will consist of weekly practices with competitions to be held on Fri & Sat during Dec thru Feb. FAMILY HONOR 2010 – All 8th grade families in the Chattanooga Deanery are invited to participate in the Family Honor Program on Jan 29-30th, 2010. Catholic Charities Interfaith Senior Services program works through volunteers to provide transportation to medical appointments for those 60 and older free of charge. For info or to volunteer call 265-2397. Health Ministry The holiday season can be a difficult time for people who may have unpleasant memories associated with the time of year. This may come from the loss of a loved one during past holiday seasons. If you know someone who is distressed during the holidays be sure to make an extra effort to offer them comfort and companionship. If you are isolated or lonely and are able bodied consider volunteering to help out at any of the charitable agencies in your area. Helping others can lift your spirits and you may make a new friend in the process. If you are housebound you may be ale to call someone else or send a card or just pray for others. If you your self need help reach out and ask for help. Giving of ourselves can make this time of year a special occasion. O God, give us the patience and courage to try to understand and to face the complications of living faithfully in our troubled world during this season and always. Holiday Stress can be a real problem at this time of year. It is such an exciting time but can begin to present problems when we are thrown out of our normal routine. While it may be unavoidable we need to be careful not to get too far away from our usual regimens in meals, sleep and exercise. Be alert to signs that your body is telling you that things are off. Fatigue, aches and pains irritability and digestive upsets. Try to take a few minutes each day to sit quietly relax and just focus on breathing deeply and rhythmically. Try to get at least a little exercise even if it isn’t as much as you normally do. This may help to keep you from becoming ill or overly stressed. This would also be a good time to reach out to someone who may be lonely and in need of a phone call or card. Chili’s restaurants “Give Back Night” for Catholic Charities is Jan 5. Divorce and Beyond Divorce and Beyond is a structured 9 week program for Catholic men and women who have experienced or are experiencing divorce. In Chattanooga this group will begin meeting on Monday, January 25 in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Life Center from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm. The sessions conclude on March 29, 2010. This marriage preparation on e day retreat is a supplement to the couples marriage formation with their parish priest. The program is designed to help the couple gain a better understanding of the joys and challenges of living the sacrament of Matrimony in their day to day lives. Cost is $135/couple. The retreat certificate is good fro a $60 discount on your marriage license. The retreat starts at 8:00 am. with a light breakfast and ends with dinner at 6:00 pm. New Year’s Resolutions: Soon we will have completed our annual list of good intentions-we’ll have passed resolutions as if we were our own Congress, legislating changes in our lives. Most of us become self-critical as soon as we become selfconscious. We spend Jan 1 walking through our lives, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives a second time, not looking for flaws but for potential. We ought to pore over the past for the good moments, remembering when we felt most at ease, lucky elated. Maybe for once our resolutions ought to include equal time for that radical greeting: Happy New Year.
