Health Ministry October is National Dental Hygiene Month, a good time to reinforce the role nutrition plays in healthy teeth and gums. While teeth require much of the same good nutrition the rest of your body needs, some nutrients play a more specific role in oral health. Calcium and Vitamin D. Calcium is vital to building and maintaining strong bones and teeth, and vitamin D is essential to absorbing calcium and regulating how much of it remains in your blood. Dairy foods provide the calcium and vitamin D you need for strong teeth; some aged cheeses may help protect your teeth from cavities by increasing saliva flow which lowers acid levels in the mouth. B-Vitamins and Iron. Wholegrains are a good source of B vitamins for growth and iron for a rich blood supply to keep teeth and gums healthy. Vitamin C. Fruits like guava, papaya, oranges and strawberries and vegetables like broccoli, peppers and tomatoes contain vitamin C, which helps keep gums healthy. WHY CATHOLIC? PORQUE SER CATOLICO? Next weekend will be the Annual Stewardship appeal (ASA). As a Catholic community we are called to respond with gratitude to God’s grace and generosity in our lives. We do so by using our gifts and by participating in helping to build His kingdom in both our parish and diocese. The ASA is to our Diocese what the weekly offertory is to our parish. Bishop Stika asks each household to participate and share in support of the Appeal. Please bring your completed commitment card and talent/time sheet to place in the offertory next week or mail them to the parish office. Thank you.

Pray the Rosary: During the month of October the Knights of Columbus Council 6099 will lead the praying of the Rosary before all weekend Masses. We will begin 35 minutes prior to each Mass and will assemble in the front of the Church. Bring your prayer intentions and join us as we pray the most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. “Go sell what you have, and give to the poor…then come follow me.” The rich young man who asked Jesus “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” had kept all the commandments form his youth and was probably a good person by the standards of his day. But he was looking for the very minimum that he could get by with. In today’s jargon we would call him a “minimalist.” The young man had many possessions. When Jesus told him that to gain eternal life he must sell what he had and give to the poor the probably though Jesus was being rather extreme. He walked away sad…Jesus did not rush after him to offer him an easier way. Jesus was actually telling him the minimal that he must do to gain eternal life. When we recognize that all that we have all that we are all that we ever will be comes form God and belongs to God at the very minimum we must acknowledge that we have nothing of our own to sell, but much of what belongs to God to share with others.
A Sense of Values During my second year of nursing school our professor gave us a pop quiz. I breezed through the questions until I read the last one. “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?” Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times, but how would I know her name? I handed in the paper, leaving the last question blank. Before the class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our grade. “Absolutely,” the professor said. “In your careers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello.” I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.
