(ASA) weekend which is being conducted throughout the Diocese of Knoxville. The ASA invites us to share our blessings and show our care and concern for one another through gift offerings to our parish and diocese. WHY CATHOLIC? PORQUE SER CATOLICO? Health Ministry Domestic Violence is a Healthcare Issue. Every 9 seconds one in three women becomes a victim of abuse. Also men make up about 10 percent of all abuse victims. In Chattanooga 38% of all homicides were related to domestic violence compared to the national average of 26%. BCBS estimate healthcare costs related to domestic valence are almost $33 million annually in Tennessee. Domestic violence victims have six times the emergency room visits eight times the physician visits and six times the prescription drug use than those not abused. Unfortunately abuse within intimate relationships is so common that many times the victim and those around her don’t recognize it for what it is. Some signs that you may be in an abusive relationship include the following: Your partner embarrasses you in front of people make you feel unworthy; your partner does things for which you are constantly making excuses to others or yourself; your partner isolates you from many of the people you care about most; your partner controls the financial aspects of your life and makes you believe you can not exist without him financially or emotionally; your partner treats you roughly (grab, pinch, push or shoves you) or threatens you verbally or with a weapon; your partner gets extremely angry frequently and without an apparent cause and or his anger escalates into force or violence. Also many times an abusive relationship begins with jealously moves to emotional abuse and ultimately becomes physically abusive. In addition the abuser manipulate the victim into believing his behavior is her fault until the victim believes she is the one who needs to change or needs to love him more or believes she deserves to be abused or punished. If you are a victim of domestic violence there is help…call 423-755-2700 the Domestic Violence Hotline or talk to one of the parish nurses. In addition all of us know victims of domestic violence so become more knowledgeable about the issue reach out to those who may be hurting reminding them no ne deserves to be abused and that help is available and pray for those who are suffering from domestic violence. Join us for an interfaith prayer service on Tuesday Oct 20 at 6:00 p.m. at the Brainerd Baptist Church. Visit the Parish Nurse link at myolph.com for current news and information.

Being a Christian is like being a pumpkin. God lifts you up takes you in and washes all the dirt off. He opens you up touches you deep inside and scoops out all the yucky stuff-including the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc. Then he carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside you to shine for all the world to see. “You will drink of the cup that I will drink…but to sit at my right or my left is not mine to give.” Not even Jesus can give us our place in eternity. We must earn it ourselves. Happily Jesus gives us the way that we can earn it. “Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.” That probably sounds rather bizarre to many in our current culture of Might makes Right, Survival of the Fittest and the One Who Dies with the Most Things Wins. However for those of us who drink of the same cup as Jesus and who share His baptism we must be servant of all. Like Jesus we must serve and expect to be served. We have no choice. When we are good stewards of God’s world and eternity. Jesus cannot have to give it to us. He will not have to give it to us. We will have earned it.
