May, 2018 - A letter from the Artistic Director Greetings, Denver Women’s Chorus fans!

Mark Zwilling, Artistic Director

Have you come prepared to have a deja vu experience? Some of the songs you will hear during “When I Grow Up” will bring back memories. We hope you will be taken back to a time when time was infinite and the world was your apple (or so you thought).

Mark’s educational and professional background is extensive, and he has served as artistic director for the women’s chorus for 16 years. Mark also served as artistic director for Out Loud: the Colorado Springs Men’s Chorus for 5 years. Currently, he is the Director of Music and The Arts at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch. St. Andrew has more than 450 active music participants in a graded music program. Mark is an active performer and maintains a private studio in organ, voice and piano.

This concert was designed specially to not only bring back memories, but to remind us that we have much to learn from today’s youth. We think it highlights a message of hope and unity that young and old alike need in this world. In celebration of youth and the little kid in all of us, the Summit Singers of the Denver Children’s Choir (formally the Rocky Mountain Children’s Choir) will be joining us, uniting the Denver Women’s Chorus with them for the first time in our history. The Denver Children’s Choir has been around 22 years providing the Denver area with top-notch musical programing. A special thank you to Kali and Julie who have been an artistic dream to work with as we embarked on this journey. Please see their upcoming concert promo in this very program (see p29)! We also are doubly blessed and excited to have Soar! Youth and Adult Choir joining us on Saturday evening. Emily Martin, Artistic Director, brings a wide range of experience to a group that has fun and makes fantastic music. The SOAR! Choir is committed to having a meal together before their rehearsals, which not only provides sustenance but also builds on the close-knit community that they have become. They have an incredible show coming up as well, we hope you will take a look at their promo in this program as well (see p28). The Denver Women’s Chorus will celebrate 35 years as a chorus next year! The chorus continues to thrive, grow and raise the bar through artistic and community involvement. This concert will be no exception, and we hope you agree after hearing it! The Denver Women’s Chorus has much to be proud of for the 2017-2018 year: • • • • • • • •

Performed alongside the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus at the special Mile Hi Church event featuring Janet Mock, regarded as one of America’s most visible and influential trans women of color. Joining Women of Denver for their Quarterly Networking Party, the start of a new partnership for us! Performing at the One Voice Benefit Concert dedicated to ending sexual assault Performing in “The Whole Aca-Lada” a cappella festival hosted by the Arvada Chorale, featuring Face Vocal Band! Singing the National Anthem to kick off Jodi’s Race for Awareness, now in their 9th year of raising awareness in the fight against ovarian cancer. A pre-Pridefest collaboration with Denver’s own Mile High Freedom Band in City Park in June! Volunteering at the Gathering Place, Same Cafe, Urban Peak and St Francis Center with RMAA during the months of April, May and June Performing the National Anthem at the Colorado Rockies game this August

If you sing, we invite you to check us out and join us as we embark on our exciting milestone 35th year (see p30). There are details in the program about our open rehearsal at the end of August. We welcomed over 20 new members this season and we invite ALL that sing soprano or alto to come sing with us. The auditions are painless and the experience will enrich your life - we guarantee it. Welcome to our shows and listen carefully to the voices of our youth. They very likely are telling a story that we all need to hear.

Oye

Music and Lyrics by Jim Papoulis Arranged by Fransisco J Nunez (performed with the Denver Children’s Choir Summit Singers Friday Night/Saturday Matinee) Soloists - Abby Colodny (DCC) Friday/Saturday Matinee, Arielle Finegold - Saturday Night Percussion - Shari Lemon, Gloria Moser, Rebecca Louden, Rachel Richards, Sarah TL Waugh and Yvonne Cherena-Pacheco

The composer wrote this as a result of songwriting workshop in Mexico with economicallychallenged inner-city children. When asked what message they wanted to convey to the world in song, the childrens’ answer was “to listen” - oye in Spanish. The Spanish text of the verses elaborates this: the children are alone, crying, hoping, dreaming, searching for a better life. Denver Children’s Choir Summit Singers Set Friday/Saturday Matinee Great Day! Traditional Spiritual, arr. Rollo A. Dillworth

Childish happiness Erased and forgotten too fast A golden light shines forever And the end of the road Jabberwocky Carolyn Jennings

Birdsong Paul Head Vois sur ton chemin Lyrics by Christophe Barratier, Music by Bruno Coulais translation: Look out on your path Children who are lost and who have been forgotten Lend them a hand And lead them Towards another future Feel in the middle of the night A surge of hope The indefatigability of life The Road to glory

One Mile Rollo Dillworth SOAR! Youth and Adult Choir Set Saturday Evening Run, Mary, Run Trad./arr. Tate Soloist - Mark Boykins In The Beauty Way Navajo Prayer Brunner America! Music and Lyrics by Bernstein/Sondheim

My Dog Is A Plumber - by Dan Greenburg, Read by Billie Lusk On Children

Music by Ysaye M Barnwell Lyrics by Kahlil Gibran (performed with SOAR! Youth and Adult Choir Saturday Evening) Percussion - Shari Lemon Ysaye Maria Barnwell, speech pathologist and health care professional, was a member of the African American feminist group “Sweet Honey in the Rock” from 1979 to 2013, and composed many of its songs. Using text from mystic poet Kahlil Gibran’s most famous work, The Prophet, this song speaks of learning to love one’s children without trying to control them or molding them into one’s own likeness.

How Far I’ll Go

Arranged by Ed Lojeski Music and Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda Soloist - Kelly Signer In the 2016 Disney animated movie Moana, American actress and singer Auli’i Cravalho sings this as the heroine Moana. Moana, the daughter of a Polynesian village chief, is chosen by the ocean itself to return the heart of the goddess Te Fiti which was stolen many years ago by the demigod Maui. Against the will of her parents, Moana sets sail to retrieve the mystical relic and succeeds after many adventures. 8

Children Will Listen

Arranged by Mark Brymer Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim The musical Into the Woods premiered on Broadway in 1987 and the film adaptation came out in 2014. The book intertwines elements from several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales, tied together with the story of a baker and his wife who want to have a child. Their interactions with the witch who has placed a curse on them and with other storybook characters during their journey form the complex and somewhat dark plot. The witch (played by Bernadette Peters in the original production) sings this song as the final moral of the play, lamenting the mistakes she and other characters have made that have brought disaster on them.

Rainbow Connection

Arranged by Gary D Fry Music and Lyrics by Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher Featuring Shari Lemon on the Banjo This enormously popular song was first sung in 1979 in The Muppet Movie by Kermit the frog, then later appeared in 1980 on The Muppet Show (sung by Kermit and Debbie Harry ) and 2011’s The Muppets (Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the entire cast), as well as numerous covers by other artists. Allmusic says “’The Rainbow Connection’ serves the same purpose in The Muppet Movie that ‘Over the Rainbow’ served in The Wizard of Oz....an opening establishment of the characters’ driving urge for something more in life.”

Eatnemen Vuelie

Music by Frode Fjellheim Silesian Folk Melody Timpani - Gloria Moser, Drum - Shari Lemon Written in 2002 and adapted to become the opening music of the 2013 animated movie Frozen, this was inspired by the yoik, an ancient tradition of the Saami people from the northern parts of Russia and Scandinavia. A yoik, rather than being about something, is something, typically using short melodic phrases with syllables that have no linguistic meaning and that are repeated endlessly. So “Eatnemen Vuelie” is not about the earth, but is the earth itself. “Vuelie” is the Saami name for this type of singing and “eatenmen” translates roughly as “earth”. In addition in this arrangement the sopranos sing the Danish Christmas hymn “Dejlig er jorden” over the lower voices.

INTERMISSION TAKE NOTE! The Small Group Ensemble of the Denver Women’s Chorus I Lived

Arranged by Deke Sharon Music and Lyrics by Ryan Tedder and Noel Zancanella Frontman Ryan Tedder of Colorado Springs’ own OneRepublic shared he wrote this song for his four-year-old son. Regarding the lyric “With every broken bone, I swear I lived,” Tedder said, “So for every day that you’re on this earth, for every minute that you have, the whole idea is doing nothing less than exactly what you feel you’re supposed to do and squeezing every last drop out of life every day, regardless of the difficulties or trials that you face.”

Try Everythng

Arranged by Paul Langford Adapted by A. Finegold Music and Lyrics by Sia Furler, Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Eriksen Shakira recorded this as the theme song for Disney’s animated movie Zootopia. Not only did the Colombian songstress record the tune, she also took on the role of pop star Gazelle. 9

Kiss The Girl

Arranged by Stephen Ross Music and Lyrics by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman Conga - Gloria Moser This enchanting hit from Disney’s The Little Mermaid was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.

Reflection

Arranged by Mac Huff Music by Matthew Wilder Lyrics by David Zippel Soloists - Leah Romero-Klein & Jane Calder The 1998 animated movie Mulan is based on the ancient Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, woman warrior. She took the place of her ill father and young brother in the army, fighting disguised as a man for twelve years. At the end of the war she refused any reward except a swift horse so she could return to her home. In the movie the song is performed by Lea Salongea as the singing voice of the heroine, Fa Mulan.

Schoolhouse Rock!

Medley arranged by Alan Billingsley Music and Lyrics by Bob Dorough, Dave Frishberg & Lynn Ahrens Speakers - Jennifer Molde, Tina Edwards, Jada Petersen & Clarsa McElhaney The Bill - Laura Reed Miss Becky Sue - Gloria Moser Banker - Emily Sellers The animated educational television series ran from 1973 to1985 and was revived with both old and new episodes from 1993 to 1999. It began as a commercial advertising venture by a Madison Avenue executive, who had the idea that a rock-style song would help his young son learn the multiplication tables. He contacted musicians to write songs and eventually animated versions were produced which were sold to ABC who ran them on Saturday mornings. The short films covered grammar, science, economics, history, and civics. Several generations of children grew up listening to these, including many chorus members who are enjoying the nostalgia!

Mother’s Day - Written and performed by Jo-Ann Birch Everything Possible

Arranged by Willi Zwozdesky Music and Lyrics by Fred Small Fred Small is a lawyer turned folksinger/activist and Unitarian Universalist minister who has written songs concerning a wide range of issues including feminism, the environment, peace, and disabilities. His debut album on Rounder Reconds includes “Fifty-Nine Cents”, a song about women’s earning power. This lullaby has long been a favorite with many GALA choirs, and has been sung by countless liberal/activist parents to their children.

The Denver Women’s Chorus (DWC) was founded in 1984 with the goal of building community through music. We are a community chorus of women with equal interests in the excellence of our music and performances, as well as in the communities in which we live. DWC believes that music should challenge and inspire us towards individual growth and dynamic engagement in enriching the entire community; the chorus, our audience, and beyond. Though our origins lie in the lesbian community, we strive to be an inclusive chorus. We are open to everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. All DWC concert music is signed in ASL. Recent concerts included a performance with Cris Williamson and a tribute to the women of country music.

Thank you Rocky Mountain Arts Association for your commitment to building community through music through the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus and Denver Women’s Chorus
