May, 2018 - A letter from the Artistic Director Greetings, Denver Women’s Chorus fans!

Mark Zwilling, Artistic Director

Have you come prepared to have a deja vu experience? Some of the songs you will hear during “When I Grow Up” will bring back memories. We hope you will be taken back to a time when time was infinite and the world was your apple (or so you thought).

Mark’s educational and professional background is extensive, and he has served as artistic director for the women’s chorus for 16 years. Mark also served as artistic director for Out Loud: the Colorado Springs Men’s Chorus for 5 years. Currently, he is the Director of Music and The Arts at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch. St. Andrew has more than 450 active music participants in a graded music program. Mark is an active performer and maintains a private studio in organ, voice and piano.

This concert was designed specially to not only bring back memories, but to remind us that we have much to learn from today’s youth. We think it highlights a message of hope and unity that young and old alike need in this world.

In celebration of youth and the little kid in all of us, the Summit Singers of the Denver Children’s Choir (formally the Rocky Mountain Children’s Choir) will be joining us, uniting the Denver Women’s Chorus with them for the first time in our history. The Denver Children’s Choir has been around 22 years providing the Denver area with top-notch musical programing. A special thank you to Kali and Julie who have been an artistic dream to work with as we embarked on this journey. Please see their upcoming concert promo in this very program (see p29)!

We also are doubly blessed and excited to have Soar! Youth and Adult Choir joining us on Saturday evening. Emily Martin, Artistic Director, brings a wide range of experience to a group that has fun and makes fantastic music. The SOAR! Choir is committed to having a meal together before their rehearsals, which not only provides sustenance but also builds on the close-knit community that they have become. They have an incredible show coming up as well, we hope you will take a look at their promo in this program as well (see p28).

The Denver Women’s Chorus will celebrate 35 years as a chorus next year! The chorus continues to thrive, grow and raise the bar through artistic and community involvement. This concert will be no exception, and we hope you agree after hearing it!

A pre-Pridefest collaboration with Denver’s own Mile High Freedom Band in City Park in June!

Volunteering at the Gathering Place, Same Cafe, Urban Peak and St Francis Center with RMAA during the months of April, May and June Performing the National Anthem at the Colorado Rockies game this August

We welcomed over 20 new members this season and we invite ALL that sing soprano or alto to come sing with us. The auditions are painless and the experience will enrich your life - we guarantee it.

Mark Zwilling Artistic Director of the Denver Women’s Chorus

Alison Dozier, Assistant Artistic Director Alison Dozier is the Assistant Artistic Director of the Denver Women’s Chorus and the Director of Take Note! the small ensemble of the Denver Women’s Chorus. Alison has been with the chorus for the past 8 years in a variety of roles. As a member of Take Note! she has collaborated on original arrangements and choralography. Alison has loved to sing since childhood and comes from a musical family. Alison is a professional counselor in Denver working with children and families.

Beth DeBoer, Principal Accompanist Beth De Boer is proud to accompany the Denver Women’s Chorus. She has accompanied several ensembles in the Denver area, including the Cherry Creek Chorale and several adult and youth theatre productions. She is the staff accompanist at Castle View High School where the choral program includes six choirs, and is the organist for a local church. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, hiking, motorcycling, and making music!

Tofer Breüer, Certified Sign Language Instructor Tofer Breüer is the only Deaf music interpreter in the US and is the proprietor of “The Kilted Interpreter.”

He studied at Gallaudet University and is a certified paralegal. Tofer is grateful to be performing with DWC and Take Note!, as he feels music can be a universal bridge between hearing and Deaf education.

Using text from mystic poet Kahlil Gibran’s most famous work, The Prophet, this song speaks of learning to love one’s children without trying to control them or molding them into one’s own likeness.

Moana, the daughter of a Polynesian village chief, is chosen by the ocean itself to return the heart of the goddess Te Fiti which was stolen many years ago by the demigod Maui.

Against the will of her parents, Moana sets sail to retrieve the mystical relic and succeeds after many adventures.

Children Will Listen

Arranged by Mark Brymer Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim The musical Into the Woods premiered on Broadway in 1987 and the film adaptation came out in 2014. The book intertwines elements from several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales, tied together with the story of a baker and his wife who want to have a child. Their interactions with the witch who has placed a curse on them and with other storybook characters during their journey form the complex and somewhat dark plot. The witch (played by Bernadette Peters in the original production) sings this song as the final moral of the play, lamenting the mistakes she and other characters have made that have brought disaster on them.

Rainbow Connection

Arranged by Gary D Fry Music and Lyrics by Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher Featuring Shari Lemon on the Banjo This enormously popular song was first sung in 1979 in The Muppet Movie by Kermit the frog, then later appeared in 1980 on The Muppet Show (sung by Kermit and Debbie Harry ) and 2011’s The Muppets (Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the entire cast), as well as numerous covers by other artists.

Allmusic says “’The Rainbow Connection’ serves the same purpose in The Muppet Movie that ‘Over the Rainbow’ served in The Wizard of Oz....an opening establishment of the characters’ driving urge for something more in life.”

Eatnemen Vuelie

Music by Frode Fjellheim Silesian Folk Melody Timpani - Gloria Moser, Drum - Shari Lemon Written in 2002 and adapted to become the opening music of the 2013 animated movie Frozen, this was inspired by the yoik, an ancient tradition of the Saami people from the northern parts of Russia and Scandinavia. A yoik, rather than being about something, is something, typically using short melodic phrases with syllables that have no linguistic meaning and that are repeated endlessly. So “Eatnemen Vuelie” is not about the earth, but is the earth itself. “Vuelie” is the Saami name for this type of singing and “eatenmen” translates roughly as “earth”. In addition in this arrangement the sopranos sing the Danish Christmas hymn “Dejlig er jorden” over the lower voices.

INTERMISSION TAKE NOTE! The Small Group Ensemble of the Denver Women’s Chorus I Lived

Arranged by Deke Sharon Music and Lyrics by Ryan Tedder and Noel Zancanella Frontman Ryan Tedder of Colorado Springs’ own OneRepublic shared he wrote this song for his four-year-old son. Regarding the lyric “With every broken bone, I swear I lived,” Tedder said, “So for every day that you’re on this earth, for every minute that you have, the whole idea is doing nothing less than exactly what you feel you’re supposed to do and squeezing every last drop out of life every day, regardless of the difficulties or trials that you face.”

He contacted musicians to write songs and eventually animated versions were produced which were sold to ABC who ran them on Saturday mornings.The short films covered grammar, science, economics, history, and civics. His debut album on Rounder Reconds includes “Fifty-Nine Cents”, a song about women’s earning power. The Guardian Circle is Rocky Mountain Arts Association’s monthly defined-giving program for family and friends of The Denver Gay Men’s Chorus and The Denver Women’s Chorus. When enrolling in this program at the Bronze ($10-49), Silver ($50-99) or Gold ($100+) levels, individuals are afforded the opportunity to support one or both choruses and to embrace the Association’s mission of “Building Community Through Music.”

Guardian Circle members can designate monthly, tax-deductible contributions at any level to support many activities, including: to purchase new music and to defray the costs of securing performing rights; to assist individual singers with their annual chorus membership dues; to enhance production capabilities at our subscription concerts; to underwrite outreach efforts to unserved and underserved audiences in our community; and to support the Association’s administrative functions. Depending on the contribution level, each new or continuing Guardian Circle member receives a variety of benefits, such as: recognition in the printed program at every subscription concert; a specially designed Guardian Circle pin; complimentary tickets; invitations to exclusive donor recognition events; access to concert previews, preferential seating at performances; and invitations to exclusive VIP areas at all subscription concerts.

The Denver Women’s Chorus (DWC) was founded in 1984 with the goal of building community through music. We are a community chorus of women with equal interests in the excellence of our music and performances, as well as in the communities in which we live. DWC believes that music should challenge and inspire us towards individual growth and dynamic engagement in enriching the entire community; the chorus, our audience, and beyond. Though our origins lie in the lesbian community, we strive to be an inclusive chorus. We are open to everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
