Mid-Week Update for the Research Medical Center Family

Quick Links:

We Show Up Spotlight

On Thursday, February 2, the Grossman Burn Center at Research Medical Center team hosted their first Burn Survivors Reunion. The 2330 Tower Lobby was packed with members of the burn center's care team and survivors of burn related injuries, including Wanda Morrow, a survivor of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, who gave a heartfelt thank you to the care team for saving her life. Dr. Megan Garcia and Bob Hafner, NP, presented awards and honors to members of the care team who had been with GBC at RMC since its opening in 2013. Dr. Peter Grossman, Medical Director of the Grossman Burn Centers, was able to attend and shared kind remarks about the care and dedication Dr. Garcia and Bob have given to patients since opening the burn center. We cannot express how grateful we are for our burn center and our burn center staff for their dedication to improving the lives of patients.

We Show Up for our Patients

Patient Testimonial: Wanda Morrow, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (Burn)

“My care team at the Burn Center were wonderful and really pushed me to become strong again. They were all very dedicated. I feel most hospitals would not try as hard as they did."

Wanda Morrow's story is one we never hope to experience. She developed Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), a rare, serious disorder of the skin that is often a result of an adverse reaction to medication. It begins with flu-like symptoms, followed by the development of a rash, then the top layer of skin sheds. The pain and injuries SJS patients deal with are typically only treatable at burn centers. Learn more about Wanda's story.

DAISY Award Honoree: Nestor Abreu, RN 3 North

Congratulations to Nestor Abreu, RN for 3 North. He is the latest recipient of a DAISY Award, who was nominated by a patient: "I had an operation to remove my prostate gland, so I had to stay overnight titrating to prevent blood clots. He was very attentive to this difficult process and quite knowledgeable as things ended up positively. I appreciated his kind and caring nature. The positive attitude and persistent attentiveness was reassuring to me as I was scared. He also showed care for our comfort as he knew the things that might bother us and took steps to keep me quiet and comfortable. I have no problem recommending this nurse for an outstanding job award. He is surely at the top of the list of the best nurse I have ever had."

Wear Red Day

Whether you are supporting Heart Month or our Kansas City Chiefs, or both, we are glad you showed up in red last Friday during Wear Red Day, and continue to show up in red daily. February is Heart Month and we are always happy to show our support for our cardiac teams and our heart patients. Thank you for wearing red!

World Cancer Day

February 4 was World Cancer Day. On World Cancer Day, as part of HCA Healthcare, we’re joining a global effort to close the care gap – an equity gap for people seeking oncology care. We are committed to providing equitable, high-quality care to all patients, and we celebrate the life-saving work of our oncology care teams whether inpatient, outpatient or through our Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at Research Medical Center. We also promoted the documentary "Facing the Laughter: Minnie Pearl" that hit theaters on February 6. Did you know that Minnie Pearl's real name was Sarah Cannon, the namesake of our cancer centers?

Black History Month Focus: Marlin Sams, Senior IT Director

Marlin Sams, Senior IT Director at Research Medical Center, knows the value diversity can bring to tech roles, especially in hospitals that serve diverse populations.

"Our caregivers and patients come from all walks of life. I wanted to create an ITG team that everyone who encounters them can relate too and see themselves in. It allows us to look at approaching ideas and suggestions from a broader lens. It makes our team so much powerful."

Learn more about Marlin and how he shaped the ITG team that was recently named the We Show Up Team of the Month.

RPC to Join Panel on Social Media Fatigue and Mental Health

ACNO Lindsay Goldammer, Conducted a Walk-A-Mile with the 7E Team. "Why walk with one team member when you can walk with the whole 7E crew?! It was evident when I arrived that they all chip in and help each other so their day goes smoother. It was clear that if every team member was not sitting and charting - no team members were sitting to chart. They worked seamlessly to ensure every patient was cared for in a timely manner. I was so impressed with their call light etiquette - why use the phone when you can walk straight into the room and talk with your patient? They are such an impressive team and I really enjoyed my time with them!

Administrator on Call (AOC)

CNO Julie Filbeck was the Administrator on Call this weekend where she reported that her rounds were good and helped out the units where it was needed. She also kept in touch all weekend with the House Supervisor.
