RMC June Nursing Newsletter

Hello! From the CNO

It’s celebration time once again! We had such a great month in May celebrating Hospital Week and Nurses Week, and now we have the privilege ofkicking offPatient Support Services Recognition Week on June 14th. Below you will see a series ofevents to celebrate our team members and Ihope you are able to stop by. As you can, remember to thank our teams for all the work they do each and every day for our patients! It takes an entire team to care for our patients and we are thankful to work alongside them.

As we talk about teams and collaboration to provide excellent care for our patients. Iwanted to share a few shout outs from our most recent Great Save event. Every year during EMS Week, we invite our EMS partners to celebrate the life and “great save” ofpatients brought and cared for at RMC. In each ofthese cases the patients were brought to our emergency department in very critical condition (active STEMI, a stroke patient, and a multi GSW patient). Our ED teams worked quickly to stabilize and resuscitate, in some cases, these patients so that they could move through the continuum ofcare. Each patient spent time in one ofour ICUs, our PCU, 7 East, 6th floor, and even our Inpatient Rehab. As each patient spoke about the care they received, they continually used the words “team,” “everyone,” and “grateful.” For each ofthese patients they attribute being alive today because ofthe care they received at Research Medical Center, because ofyour care!

As the summer is upon us, Ihope you take time to enjoy the sunshine, maybe kids out ofschool, a family trip, or a weekend at home. As always, thank you for the care you provide each and every day to our patients and each other!

PCTHighlights

May’s PCTmeeting was amazing. The team participated and was super engaged in the education/lab session.

Mary Beth Pecina, Stephanie Lunning, Shenita Fletcher and rehab colleagues, and Angela Yates set up rooms to simulate fall risks; gait belt, wheelchair, and walker transfer/use, and SIroom risks. The PCTs were able to rotate through each room to find items ofpotential risk and learn about all areas. Feedback from the group – it was great to learn the proper placement and use ofthe gait belt, now understand the reason for cutting the cord in the bathroom ofSIpatients. They thought that the rooms were great to see things that they may not have considered a risk in the patient rooms.

Bedside Shift Report: Engage the patient in setting their goals

When people are hospitalized, they lose a lot ofcontrol and autonomy. When we include them in goal setting for the shift, it increases their engagement and provides them a sense ofcontrol and purpose. Here are some prompts to engage your patient:

“What is your most important priority for today/tonight?”

“What would you like to accomplish today?”

“Tell me a few things you would like to see happen today/tonight.”

During Nurse Leader Rounding, our nurses leaders are going to be asking patient’s about their goals and how they came up with them. We look forward to recognizing you for including your patients.

Meet Your Leader

Charissa

InpatientWound& HBOManager

Connecting with people, sharing experiences and trading life with others fills my cup. The opportunity to learn and grow from the team around me helps me to be a better human. Encouraging others to chase personal and professional goals is inspiring to me. Ialso like a challenge and believe we can have fun while accomplishing our goals.

Critical care, hard work, integrity, commitment to professionalism, the moto of"never burn a professional bridge" plus a little OCD

pushed me to the path today. Idid not set out to conquer a specific path, but focused on career moves that made sense for my family at the time and that Ifound rewarding. When you enjoy what you do and you have great mentors alongside you, working hard to make a difference doesn't seem so hard. The mentors that inspire(d) me, dream(ed) bigger (than Idid), encourage(d) me by pointing me in the right direction, and gave me the space to grow from adversity and constructive criticism.

Iwas raised in California by a village we call family, graduated with my ADN in Iowa 1997. The first ten years ofmy nursing career was dedicated to Comprehensive Burn Care (adult and peds) and burn education. Igradually grew from grad nurse to charge nurse and taught burn education in a variety ofsettings. In 2004, we moved to Kansas City and Ispent the next fifteen years in adult trauma ICUs, Rapid Response Team, House Supervisor PRN and eICU. In 2015, Istarted at Lee’s Summit Medical Center as the house supervisor and for very first time in my career only had one job. Ilearned a little about a lot, while growing in leadership. Starting in a small HCA facility allowed me to participate in many initiatives, manage processes not specific people, work closely with administrators and help prepare me for my current role. August of2022, Iaccepted my current role at Grossman Burn Center (GBC) at RMC. December 2022, Icompleted my Masters ofScience in Nursing Degree with the unwavering support ofGBC and RMC leadership while navigating my first few months on campus at RMC. Ihave joined the best multidisciplinary team to care for this unique patient population and am grateful to be back to my roots and work with the type ofpatients and families that fill my cup. GBC is comprised ofa multidisciplinary team with additional training specific to our patient population, beyond their licensed skillset making them the expert in burn care. We could not deliver exceptional patient care without all ofthem. The Burn Clinic staffcares for our community, ER follow ups, Workman's compensation and discharged RMC inpatients. HBO has dedicated training and Wound nurses are certified and both experts in their field, respectively. Dr. Garcia is well respected, one ofthe best in her field, leads us well. We hope you never need us, but when you do, we will care for you like family.

This month (June) Iwill be married 32 years. We have four children, three ofwhich are married. This group ranges in age from 25-30 years ofage with four grandsons under three. We have a couple others we claim as ours as well, so Sunday night dinner is a minimum seating offifteen, plus furballs. We love anything outdoors and sports. Ihave a coffee room instead ofa dining room and the door is always open at home as well as at work. We love BIG, just like our family.

Team Recognitions

DAISY AwardWinner:LaurenBultmann,RN,

7E

Congratulations to Lauren Bultmann, RN, 7E, for receiving April's DAISY Award. Her nominator said, "she is always kind and encouraging with her students or even with families who aren’t knowledgeable about diagnosis. I’ve seen her spend hours giving anatomy lessons and printing out literature to help her patient's family understand. Not only does she help their family, but she is the RN you want in your corner ifyou are in crisis!"
