We Show Up Spotlight

Our combined Critical Care teams (Medical ICU, Neuro ICU and Surgical ICU) are our first We Show Up Team of the Month for 2023! These teams are champions of showing up for our patients, communities and each other in many ways. One outstanding way that this team of more than 120 colleagues have shown up was by maintaining excellent infection prevention numbers that keep our patients safe. They have maintained:

• 1,241 days C. diff free in Medical ICU

• 493 days CLABSI free in Neuro ICU

• 155 days CAUTI free in Surgical ICU

Learn more about how they show up and send kudos to this team.

Family Donates to Oncology Caring Closet in Memory of Parents

In December, the Payne family braved the cold weather to bring donations to stock Research Medical Center's Oncology unit's Caring Closet and ER of Brookside with items that bring joy. Each year, they donate items to RMC in honor of late family members who both were cared for at RMC but ultimately lost their battles with cancer. Read more here.

Medical Student, Kind Citizen Donates New Car Seat to Patients

In December, an 8-month-old baby came in to our ER after the parents were involved in a car accident. After connecting with KCFD, our ER learned of Rohan, a third-year medical student at UMKC School of Medicine who is interested in Emergency Medicine and Trauma Surgery, shadowing the Chief that day and had bought a new car seat to gift to this child and his parents using funds out of his own pocket.

VigiLanz Safety Surveillance Coming February 1

A new event reporting system, VigiLanz Safety Surveillance (VSS), will go live Feb. 1. After Feb. 1, access to Meditech Event Reporting will NOT be available. VSS is a simpler, more intuitive tool available to all staff and providers that aims to:

• Reduce length of time to report events

• Provide access to meaningful data analysis and reporting

• Increase event reporting

• Promote patient safety culture

Soon, department leaders will provide information on this transition, including supporting and training documentation. While HealthStream training for VSS is not required for frontline staff at this time, we encourage you to take the course to learn more: access the course here.

Take the HealthStream training by January 31 and you will be entered to win a prize, including Applause for Excellence (formerly Above All Else) points, Coffee Shop Vouchers, and giveaways! Up to 20 winners will be selected.

Lindsay Goldammer, ACNO, conducted a Walk-a-Mile with Kristen Baker, RN, in ICU "Kristen skillfully handled her patients making sure each patient had the attention they needed. She was so attentive and kind to an intubated patient who was struggling with his tube. She sat with him, held his hand and talked with him until he got more comfortable and calmed down. It was clear throughout my time with her that she is not only kind to her patients, but kind to everyone that she comes in contact with as everyone enjoyed stopping to talk with her. It was special to watch her genuine reactions with her patients and peers.

Thank you for allowing me to follow you and learn, Kristen!"

Administrator on Call (AOC)

Assistant Chief Nursing Officer Lindsay Goldammer was the Administrator on Call this past weekend. She was in contact with the House Supervisor to help support staff and assist in general hospital operations.
