Trauma Awareness Month: Shyann Cole's Story
On June 11, 2021, 24-year-old Shyann Cole was involved in a motor vehicle accident, which resulted in traumatic injuries, including liver and kidney lacerations, and abdominal and spinal injuries. After a bystander found her and called for help, she was transported by EMS to Research Medical Center’s ACS Verified Level 1 Trauma Center where she was immediately taken to the OR for surgery and to receive blood transfusions. Beth Wilhelm, VPQuality, conducted a Walk-a-Mile with Kaylyn on 4 East
"Ihad the pleasure ofshadowing Kaylyn on 4 East, inpatient oncology unit. The unit functions like a well-oiled machine and everyone pitches in to help when needed. Iobserved medication passes and the manipulation ofa J-tube in order to get it functioning again. It was evident that Kaylyn not only provides excellent care to her patients but she also knows them as individuals. Her warmth and compassion brings joy and lots ofsmiles to her patients, even when they don’t feel like smiling. As a past cancer survivor, ifIever had to be on an inpatient oncology unit again, Iwould choose Kaylyn as my nurse."
"My Walk-A-Mile this month was with Kristie Zager, RN in OPPR. Kristie demonstrated exceptional patient care in preparing her patients for procedures. When starting an IV on an anxious patient, she was very calm, reassuring, and confident. Iwas impressed by the organization ofthe department and how well the staffworks together in keeping the process moving as the flow ofpatients in and out is a constant. Awesome work, Kristie, in compassionately caring for our patients. Thank you for letting me peek into a day in your life, Ilearned a great deal!"
