We Show Up Spotlight
Last week, HCA Healthcare announced that 19,423 pounds of unused or expired medications were collected during the fourth annual Crush the Crisis national opioid take back day on October 29, 2022. It is the most HCA Healthcare facilities have collected in this event, eclipsing the 15,566 pounds it collected in 2021. HCA Healthcare has now collected approximately 54,644 pounds of medication since launching Crush the Crisis in 2017.
This year, all 15 HCA Healthcare U.S. Divisions participated, including HCA Midwest Health which accounted for 1,130 pounds of unused or expired medications across our participating hospitals. Research Medical Center alone collected more than 200 pounds. Thank you to the dedication of our Pharmacy staff, including Victoria Easley, Pharmacy Technician, for managing the event that took place at Brookside Campus.
Crush the Crisis aims to raise awareness about the dangers of opioid misuse and the importance of proper disposal of unused or expired medications. An estimated 13.4 million doses of medication were collected at more than 100 collection sites across 17 states. HCA Healthcare’s “Crush the Crisis” events were held in alignment with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which collected 647,163 pounds of medication.
We Show Up for our Patients
Patient Testimonial: Robert "Bob" Podnar, Cardiology patient (Thankful Families)
On Memorial Day Weekend in May 2022, Bob, a 41 year old auto glass installer from Belton, Mo., suffered a massive STEMI with 100 percent blockage. Considered young by many to have such a severe heart attack, his life was saved after EMS crews transported him to Research Medical Center just in time. He was treated by interventional cardiologist Dr. Brian Friedman, MD, and had been cared for by our colleagues in our ER, ICU and Cardiac Rehab units.
He then went on to be the “young guy” during his cardiac rehab program which opened his eyes to learning how to take better care of himself and that heart conditions do not discriminate. He is grateful for the life saving care he received at RMC. On November 15, he was reunited with his care team during our Thankful Families Celebration event. Read more.
We Show Up for our Communities
Inspiring the Next Generation of Nurses
In November, Research Medical Center had several opportunities to engage with the youth in our community, inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals.
In partnership with Research College of Nursing, RMC nurses meet with junior high school students from the Northland and let them know why a career in healthcare is the way to go.
Additionally, RMC welcomed the Kansas City Kansas school program called Gear Up, which focuses on supporting students from 7th grade through their first year of college to ensure they stay on track and are set up for success. CNO Julie Filbeck gave a shout to all the team members that helped this be an amazing day for these future colleagues.
and RCON Participate in Legacy Panel
The Kansas City Public Library hosted a panel titled, Service Under Stress: Nursing in the Era of COVID 19. This discussion, moderated by RCoN president Dr. Patrick Robinson, gathered area nurses from Children’s Mercy, KU Medical Center and RMC to examine burdens and the ongoing impact of the COVID 19 outbreak on frontline medical staff nurses in particular. Colleagues representing Research included Julie Filbeck, CNO, Loretta Rollings, Charge Nurse ICU, Pat Conley, Clinical Nurse Coordinator PCU, and Dr. Maithe Enriquez Infectious Disease Nurse Practitioner. DAISY
GI Lab
Congratulations to Dawn Belgrade, RN in our GI Lab. She was nominated by an RMC visitor. “She wears many hats within her dept. She is always prepared for what a case may throw at her and is always the physician’s right hand aid. She is knowledgeable about what devices will be used for the case supports the physician and even asks clinical questions with a true interest as to why the physician is performing certain types of therapies. Her bedside manner is second to none and has a no quit attitude, especially in cases that last for hours. Whenever nurses are swapping out for a break she stays through the entirety of the case. Without her as a nurse the efficiency of the case would be greatly affected. I can honestly say that every day I am supporting a case at RMC I learn something from her.”
Award: Dawn Belgrade, RNBEE Award, Joshua Brosnan, PCT 4 East
Congratulations to Joshua Brosnan, PCT on 4E. He is the latest recipient of our BEE Award. According to the patient who nominated him, "He is special! He stayed late after his 12 hours shift running all over the hospital trying to find my husband a bed so that he could stay here with me. As you know, I have been told I have extensive brain cancer melanoma which can be very bad for my survival. I had some pretty shaky emotional break downs over the weekend. I am only 36!! He was just there for me. He stayed with me and allowed me to cry. He was there to hold my hand and keep me company while I felt a little sorry for myself. Don’t you all ever let him go! ”
Santa Claus is Coming to Town!

Be on the Lookout! The Elves Have Arrived
at RMC
We need your help to make our two newest seasonal colleagues feel welcome this holiday season.
Search for them throughout the hospital and earn a coffee voucher for your hospitality: Each week starting December 5 30, these elves will be visiting various areas in the hospital to spread holiday cheer. In the weekly newsletter and internal RMC Family Facebook Group, a riddle will be posted hinting where they will be hanging out. Solve the
riddle, find them, take a picture and post it to our internal FB group thread or send us an email. Instead of telling on you to Santa like the everyday Elf on the Shelf, these Elves of RMC want to give you a gift! Each week six winners (3 winners per elf) will receive a coffee voucher.
BONUS! Name our elves: Visit our trivia section below and have an opportunity to name our elves. Two winners will be randomly selected to win an additional prize and naming rights for our newest colleagues.
Today is the Last Day to Give Thanks for a Chance to Win 10,000 points!
November is the month of gratitude and the perfect reason to show our appreciation. Send a colleague recognition for your chance to win 10,000 points. 10 winners each week!
HR Tidbit: Submit Documentation by Dec. 9 for Reimbursement in 2022
To receive up to $5,250 in tuition reimbursement in 2022, colleagues must have the following submitted and approved by Dec. 9:
• Final course grade(s), standard unofficial transcript or letter from the professor, department head or registrar's office on official university letterhead that shows the expected final grade
• Itemized tuition invoice
• Proof of payment for tuition
If a colleague misses the deadline, the payment may be made in 2023 and applied toward the 2023 reimbursement maximum instead. For more information, call EdAssist at (800) 6402235 or go to HCAhrAnswers.com*, click on Benefits: HCA Rewards and select Education Assistance.
Michaela Logan,
“It was a joy to follow Rita. She has worked here 21 years with many years prior to that when we were Baptist. Rita has the absolute best laugh and brings that positive attitude into each patient room she enters. I had a chance to build and pass out trays with Rita on 5 West Rehab and 7 East Brain and Stroke and really appreciated that Rita took the extra minute to offer assistance to each patient so they could enjoy a hot breakfast. Thank you Rita for all you do. You are appreciated!”
Administrator on Call (AOC)
Very special AOC rounds this weekend as Ashley McClellan, Chief Executive Officer, delivered yummy cookies to the units on Thanksgiving day. She was joined by her son, Spencer, and reported that the team was in good spirits and loved the treats! Julie Filbeck, ACNO, was the official AOC this weekend and kept in contact with the Nursing Supervisor to provide support as needed.
