Research Medical Center Nursing Newsletter August 2022

Page 1

Earlier this month, we had the distinct pleasure to welcome our HCA senior nursing team from Corporate for a nursing strategy visit. We were joined by HCA Chief Nurse Executive Sammie Mosier, and Group Chief Nurse Executives Erica Rossitto and Jan Gannon. Of all of the hospitals in our Division, this team chose to visit Research Medical Center to learn more about our complex organization and how we are utilizing the Corporate nursing strategy within our facility. In this visit we had the opportunity to highlight some of the great work that is occurring in nursing at all three of our campuses. We had the opportunity to share some of our best practices, as well as share some of the struggles we are facing each day. We had phenomenal dialogue during our visit and they have asked us to share some of the work we are doing with other hospitals across the company. As our time ended, each of the senior nursing leaders wanted the nursing teams to know what tremendous work we are doing for our community and for our patients. They see the work that is happening at RMC, and while not all of our outcomes are where we want, they believe in us! For me, preparation for this visit forced me to really reflect on the work we have been doing over the last year and while sometimes the days seem long, know we have made great strides.

Over the next few months we will be setting up a series of Nursing Town Halls to share the exact same content with all of you. I hope you will take the opportunity to hear us brag about each of you and the work you are doing. You are making difference, for your team and for our patients. I look forward to seeing and sharing with you.

In August, we held three PCT Focus Groups and asked our PCTs to share their ideal work environment for the start, middle, and end of their shifts. Approximately 20 PCTs participated with many common themes around creating a welcoming environment, providing a consistent report, availability and stocking of supplies, and consistent accountability for coming to work on time. We shared the Focus Group feedback with our PCT Steering Council and have developed an action plan to address the feedback fromthis group.

Stroll With Your Nursing 'O'

CNO Julie Filbeck had a lovely stroll with Kelsey Miller, RNon 7 East Brain and Stroke PCU, for this month's "Stroll with Your Nursing 'O.'" Walk alongside themand meet (or get to know better) a nursing colleague. Learn who Kelsey calls when she needs IVhelp, her dreamcar, and which unit she loves to collaborate with the most (amongst others).

In our last update, we touched on one of our recruitment strategies being Nurse Externs and howthey are our pipeline. Iwould like to build on that and let everyone knowthat we have 18 Nurse Externs graduating in December fromvarious different schools. Of those 18 nurse externs, eight have accepted positions with RMC and we are excited to have themjoin our teamhere. There are also eight in this group that are moving through the interviewprocess currently. So, this is my invitation to our nursing community here at RMC to invite these Nurse Externs to explore possibilities with you as an experienced RN. Being one of the most complexorganizations in the city, Ican’t think of a better way to recruit than by using you all and the wonderful work you do every day to help us.

areas. While in nursing school, Istarted working at RMC in the ER and then started my career here in the ICUbefore moving back to the ER setting. Ireally enjoy throughput and being a resource to others, so Iswitched to a bed manager/house supervisor position at a sister facility for eight years prior to coming back to RMC in my current position as director of clinical operations. Outside of work, Ilove spending time with family and friends. Ihave three beautiful daughters-Cheyenne (24), Gracie (19) and Josie (17). If you see me tearful around the first day of school, it’s because my baby is graduating high school this year! We also have two fur babies-a black lab named Olivia and a Black PhantomGolden Doodle named Stella, both have outgrown our laps but not our hearts! Ienjoy being outdoors, vacationing with my kids, reading, and watching football. One of the most interesting things about me is that I’ve skydived twice and will most likely say “yes” if anyone needs someone to try it with! As crazy as it sounds, it’s one of the most peaceful experiences I’ve ever had. Iwas so thankful to able to come back to RMC where Istarted my nursing career. Ienjoy the atmosphere and knowing each day will bring on a newchallenge. We have the best team here at RMC. I’mso proud of where we are and cannot wait to see where we will be in the next year!
