Research Medical Center Nursing Newsletter: October 2022

Hello! From the CNO

It is that time of year in which we are about to dive into the holiday season (Ilove this time of year!). The next time we connect, Thanksgiving will have already passed so Iwant to request that you take time this season to enjoy your loved ones, those that fill you with joy, and those that remind you of the blessings in life. Ihave several things Iwant to share with you this month.

First and foremost, THANK YOU! We had 71% of our staff participate in our biannual Vital Voices survey. Overall, RMC saw a 2-point increase in overall employee engagement and nursing specifically saw a 5-point increase! Right now, we are reading through the 2,800+ comments and reviewing them by department. While we are excited to see our overall engagement increase, we know that we still have work to do and will not take our foot off the gas! Look for planning meetings to be scheduled soon in your department for unit level results and action planning.

I am also very excited to announce a new role that we will begin here at RMC. As we recognize the challenges of staffing and providing support for our newer colleagues, we have posted a new position “Resource RN.” This position is intended to be a specific support to our colleagues who may be out of orientation, but are experiencing something new or something they may not have had a lot of exposure to and don’t feel comfortable doing alone. That could range from administering a new medication, hanging blood, doing a bedside procedure, and a litany of so many other things! We are looking for experienced nurses who love to teach, and have a passion for making our new hires successful at RMC!We were all new once, and each of us are successful because of those that supported us! I look forward to filling these positions as soon as possible.

Shared Governance Update

Erin Reed, Oncology

I originally went to college to become a high school teacher because I love learning and I love helping people learn. But I was also fascinated by science and in awe of the work of healthcare providers in hospitals. Fortunately, I had two uncles who chose nursing as their second careers who encouraged me to become a nurse so I changed my major to nursing my junior year of college. I have never regretted that decision! Nursing has brought many excellent opportunities for personal and professional growth, and more importantly, so many wonderful people into my life.

Over the past 21 years, I have worked my way from being a CNA, to a LPN, an ADN-RN, a BSN, and a MSN (Executive Practice and Healthcare Leadership from Research College of Nursing in 2018). When I started as a new grad RN in 2003 on an inpatient oncology unit in Denver, I had no idea how much I would come to love caring for cancer patients. Even though my love for oncology was strong, I had other interests I wanted to develop. I spent time as a clinical analyst in an IT department and as a hospital-based educator for several years. I’ve been a leader in the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at RMC since 2017. I’m happy my path finally brought me back to my oncology roots. Throughout my nursing journey, there have been pivotal moments when someone who believed in me encouraged me to take steps that lead to my next opportunity. In each role, I’ve learned valuable lessons and gained expertise that has helped me be more successful in my next role. One of the things I love about nursing is how the possibilities are nearly limitless as long as you are committed to working hard and being a lifelong learner.

Meet Your Leader

People are what I love most about my job - our patients, my RMC oncology team and the Sarah Cannon network, as well as colleagues throughout RMC. What I enjoy most about being a leader is investing time in building relationships and developing people, finding creative solutions to improve processes/systems, and collaborating with colleagues across the HCA network and the broader healthcare community. The work we do is hard! I want to help people feel valued, be inspired to keep striving, and find ways to thrive despite the challenges we face.

It’s difficult to articulate exactly what makes RMC such a unique, special place, but I do know we have some of the most exceptional people who do extraordinary things for patients and for each other – every day

I’m originally from Chicago, but I’ve also lived in Nebraska and Colorado. I moved to KC in 2007. Although Chicago will always be “home,” Kansas City feels like home. I’m excited about all of the development currently in progress and planned for the future. I would like to get more involved in our community and support initiatives to make KC an even better place to live – for everyone.

I didn’t think I would ever get re-married, but I met Nick Reed by chance in July 2018 while out with friends in the KC Crossroads district. We started talking that night and have been together ever since. We got married in May 2021. We live in the River Market and love the downtown life! We also love adventures - traveling, kayaking, skiing, hiking, sporting events (especially KC Current women’s soccer). I have a 28-year old daughter Aspen who recently moved from KC to Los Angeles, CA. My parents and oldest sister live in Chicago. My younger sister lives part of the year in Geneva, Switzerland and part of the year in Philadelphia, PA. Nick’s family lives in St. Louis. We don’t get to spend much time with our families so our friends are very much our family – including my RMC work family.
