Blur: “The mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible. Oscar Wilde. This design studio seeks to uncover some of the mystery of the world, shedding light on the visible. By revealing some of the principles that underlie the visual, we give ourselves greater control within the design process, to be able to predict the real architectural outcome. The program was structured to include initial prescribed investigations. These provided insight into the concrete and intangible nature of the visual world through a series of photographic studies which seek out visual ambiguities in the city, particularly in relation to light. Further exploration into the possibilities of the visual are developed in the design of an art gallery for photographic and sculptural works.

Blurring the edges betw the natural.

Renee Ridgway: ‘blur’: to become indistinct . . . to obscure. I have taken particular interest in the movement of light over time, and how this, in turn, effects the projection of imagery from the structure onto the surrounding context. The particular rhythmic features of the shadow were looked at. How they enlarge and diminish to articulate different interpretations of the building’s configuration. The skin of the gallery, mimics, and opens to directly receive this light source and project he skeletal frame within the building. The subtle shifting of the elements fractures the initial perception, and allows blurring of the physical nature.

With the sun being the primary variable of the perceptual situation, the characteristic of spaces change with time and season. This project produces an oscillation within the perceptual field, which becomes a source of uncertainty.

The Reflector Gallery - the idea The idea for this building arose while working with the different phenomenon’s, reflection, refraction and diffraction. The aim of the design is to bring light with the help of these phenomenon`s into the gallery rooms and on the outside to a point with very little or no direct sunlight. Therefore the facade got the materiality of high polished aluminium and half mirrored glass, representing the phenomenon’s. The building itself contains all rooms that are necessary for a gallery. From the gallery rooms, the generous entry area and the café at the top level, plus the whole office space.

Perspective Gallery Perspective Gallery The Collins street ‘Perspective Gallery’ forms itself growing off the existing OPSM building, and is pushed and pulled by the direction and angle of the sun throughout the day so that direct sunlight illuminates each facade at different hours of the day. Lenses were introduced into the angular rooves to ‘bend’ light and incorporate the idea of perspective and illusions, to add ‘blur’ to the design. The light

through these lenses ‘burn’ through the floors and the facade of the building creating openings to allow natural light in, and the directed light out. The illusions are pushed in the interior through ramped corridors which gradually taper and make them appear longer, and the people within them, larger. Openings into these corridors are cut to appear to be protruding from the walls. Photos by: Bronwyn Litera Zul Hafiz Hamzah

Art Gallery; iinspired i by the little i things i from the blur/ambiguity elements that make up the site: the light patterns, sculptural wall texture, reflections, repetitions framed views. The existing characteristics of the site are being retained and can be seen in the design as well, like the thoroughway.

studio blur - liam gleeson reflection-refraction the gallery took its form from a series of light and shadow studies taken during the semester. the observation of an occurance of blur on a wet surface, which generated an interest in the idea of reflection/refraction, inspired my idea of being able to experience the gallery from the outside through a moment of blur. this moment of blur is designed to entice people to enter the gallery to experience the works within.

The Greenhouse The design is based on the mapping of moving leaves on the site. They where captured by camera and during a stormy day with a longtime exposure. The shape is based on extrusion of selected, mapped pathways, as shown on top. The facadepattern is inspired by the veins of leaves. The skin is a doubble layer of glas to get a better insulation. The gallery is situated close to the allready existing building in the middle, to use the structure. The sculpturepavillion closes the gap, but there is still a shortcut for pedestrians. 9am - September 22

The design intention of the project is to decompose the aberrant faces of water, capture the essence of ambiguous and blurriness. The project has explored the correlation between art and architecture with the purpose of giving the reciprocal respect to each other.
