Kosovo is a Country the size of a City. It’s land area of 10,900km2 and population of 2.1 million are comparable to Melbourne’s land area of 8,800km2 and population of 3.8 million. Many European countries have low growth rates. Kosovo by contrast has a young population and growth rate of around 1.7% (Australia 1.2%). If current trends continue by 2050 Kosovo will have a population of 5.2 million, similar to Victoria with 1/20 of the land area. Population growth presents a challenge for Kosovo as demand on resources such as food, services and infrastructure increases. There is a trend toward growth in the cities leading to depopulation in rural areas. A lack of housing forces people into informal settlements and the increasing dominance of the car creates urban sprawl at metropolitan edges and along narrow arterial corridors between regional centres. Urban sprawl threatens to engulf the whole country with illegal settlements. Kosovo needs urban proposals for its future. “Too much is improvised. We need a ‘Napoleon’ on the political scene, someone who will let a planner like Haussmann attack the problem...” Visar Geci - Kosovar Architect - from Pristina is Everywhere’ - Kai Vockler 2008 The studio focuses on Architecture and Urbanism at several scales concurrently, developing concepts that repeat or operate at different scales in various ways. From designing Kosovo as a single urban concept to Architectural explorations in the city of Ferizaj and urban interventions.

Initial research investigated the socio-politicalgeographical by graphical means of expression. Analysing Kosovo’s urban issues via info-graphics and diagram, where emphasis is placed on communicating the maximum with the minimum. Diagramming the existing and designing the future urban relationships within Kosovo.

These observations and research provide the background and focus for each student’s spatial plan. Issues are transformed into propositions, foregrounding particular aspects of Kosovo, a framework to imagine possible urban plans, diagrams and scenarios.

Cluster Cities | Kosovo Waste Campaign There are only 19 official landfills in stark contrast to the 140 illegal sites across Kosovo. A waste campaign aims to exploit this eyesore of an urban issue to opportunistically create new Land-Fill-Gas (LFG) and Biofuel plants that feeds on waste. Where new energy-production and waste-

Edible Culture

Edible Culture A study of Kosovo, from the country as an entirety to a singular building in Ferizaj. To build a civic building of importance, it was imperative to understand the history and culture of Kosovo. Edible culture seeks to ease racial tension and internal conflicts by encouraging community

interaction through the use of the building. It aims to promote urban agriculture and raise awareness to Kosovoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s declining ecological resources in the establishment of a greenhouse. Jasmine Hoey

Neverfinish Kosovo In a culture of uncontrolled regulations and unchecked planning the logic is not to disallow but to promote. Structures in grey areas and desired development zones are constructed without program for future use. Infrastructure emanates from these points connecting and converging on

areas of similar growth. The Kosovo condition allows for unlimited alteration - the project embodies an energy that exists in Kosovoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s urban environment, turning away from negative development issues and proposing a development of positivity originating from the people and existing conditions of Kosovo. Plan For A Country Of Minimal Revenue War left Kosovo the poorest country in Europe. Assets are underdeveloped. Poor infrastructure caused regional depopulation, illegal construction in main cities, hindered development and produced a stagnant economy. The proposal promotes territorial cooperation between

economically strong and weak areas via decentralisation. 8 new city-states of differentiated economic roles and activities promote complementary relationships between cities and avoids competition of similarities. Impermanence of a Transient Population Throughout the history of Kosovo there have been dramatic fluctuations in human movements resulting in a transient population.
