‘‘WAHT IF’’ SPECULATIONS

A

t the beginning, we developed a series of secnarios for Lake Tai in 2050. Every scenario includes two fundemental rules, which are the population of the city must be double the 2020 population or more and the total green space for the city must be 90% of land area or more. Due to the double population and forecast sea level rise in 2050, traffic congestion caused by urbanization becomes more severe. To solve this issue, we try to develope a new urban form that air traffic became a more important and common mode of transportation of cities. There are new urban centers around skyports with new commercial and residential blocks. Simultaneously, the corresponding rules will be implemented to accomplish the innovation of air traffic, and the rennovation of ground and underground transportation.Finally, we decided the scenario of skyport city.

he main situation of Taihu region today is that there are 7 cities around Taihu. Also a lot of agricultural land and villages are located among city areas. The main transportation among cities are high speed roads and high-speed railways. based on the analysis of these conditions in taihu. The main problems of taihu are the over rapid urbanization. The population and amenities are not evenly distributed. Most of them are just concentrated in existing large cities.

eanwhile, the new technology, policies and the current situation of China have made it possible for Flying Cars to become a major means of transportation in the future. Fisrt, In the research on the development of the Yangtze River Delta, the concept of “city circle around Taihu “ has been put forward for a long time. Driven by the radiation from Shanghai, the taihu area is rapidly developing. However, it also brings about the city’s disorderly competition. For example, Suzhou is close to Shanghai, so it is the biggest city around Taihu. Many other areas, however, are less developed. The rise of taihu City circle is beneficial to the develop the taihu region evenly.

nother important thing is that already have a lot of Aviation Cities in China. such as Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport zone, Beijing Shunyi and also the Zhengzhou Aviation City. At the beginning ,the airport is just an important infrastructure of the city. With the development of urban economy, More and more cities begin to plan and build airport economic zones. In addition to the development of airport-related industries, they also plan social public services and other kinds of functions in airport economic zones. And finally develop as an aviation city.

ompared with high-speed rail, although China’s high-speed rail is very convenient, comfortable and cheap, the construction cost of high-speed rail networks is actually very high. Flying Cars are more flexible and more efficient. Aviation city is an important new urban area for urban development, and also becomes the carrier to attract new population and new industries. However, China’s aviation cities are generally far from the city area. It is more like a new urban area independent of the city, but not well integrated with urban life. As a result, many aviation cities lack urban vitality. Moreover, people flying to other places often need to transfer a long distance of transportation to get to the airport. 27

onsidering the history timeline of transportation systems in cities around Taihu, we take Suzhou as an example and list the time taken from Changxing to Suzhou in different periods. People have changed their ways from walking to driving cars. Nowadays, China uses high-speed rail as the main mode to carry long-distance transportation in Taihu region. So we speculate that aircrafts will be the more efficient transportation to replace the existing vehicles in 2050.

T

he skyport and new urban system will also lead to some changes of cities. First of all, the most obvious change is the improvement of transport efficiency amongs cities. The new system greatly shortens transportation time between cities. What new opportunities and challenges will occur in skyport city? Firstly, aviation logistics will be promoted and regional economic cooperation will be strengthened, because of high traffic efficiency. Secondly, aircraft will consume more energy and might cause air pollution which means there is a new challenge of using new energy Thirdly, it will change people lifestyle in different aspects, like taking public aircraft to work, and there are no limits to where people can work or live. Finally, skyport city actually will make city become smaller that can also lead to urban intensification

nitially we set 8 rules for our scenario. These rules include urban and architectural scales but lack of the variables for producing the different potential outcomes in 2050. The considerations on the rules lead us to a comprehensive understanding on the next step designed to produce different outcomes through the interaction of these rules or parameters.

o improve our rules of the game, we confirmed 5 rules about the airports. The factors include the number of population, the proportion of amenities, the distance from airport to the city centre, the FAR of buildings and the types of the buildings. These rules are the second phase before the final rules.

Another 5 rules are about road, green spaces and waterway. We set the exact numbers for every rule to model and limit the future scenario.

Rule 1: Every 200k population requires an airport. Rule 2: Every airport must have 30% commercial and 35% industrial facilities within 5km. Rule 3: Every airport should be 5 mins from the city centre. Rule 4: The FAR of commercial buildings around the airports must be controlled at 2.5-5, industrial buildings must be controlled at 0.8-1.5. Rule 5: No residential buildings within 3km around the airport.

Rule 6: Only 10% of roads on the ground used for transportation. Rule 7: Every public building must constructed skywalks to connect surroundings buildings within radius of 2km. Rule 8: At least 35% of agricultural land cannot be used for commercial development. Rule 9: 30% of the road on the ground must be used for pedestrian and bicycle paths. Rule 10: Within 50m of river setback is not allowed to build any buildings and 30m wide green buffer must be constructed along the riverbank.

The Evolution of Skyport Cities

o show the evolution of skyport city chronologically, we divided the period into every 5 years to speculate and simulate the urban plan. In 2025, the proposed skyport will appear in Taihu region. From 2025 to 2050, the distribution of residential, commercial and industrial area will gradually change on the basis of the sites of skyports and existing urban conditions. Furthermore, the river renovation and affected area will increase to widen the opened ground floor for citizens. Only the main roads will be retained for normal transportation. So how the vision of urban chunk looks like in 2050? 48

Urban Amenities & Infrastructures

T

his part is the experiment process on the scale of urban chunk. We chose the 3*3 kilometers chunk in Changxing as our first testing site. This chunk is located in the vicinity of Taihu and at the edge of Changxing city center. Throughout the analysis of urban amenities and infrastructures in Changxing, we used the existing urban chunk as the basic vessel to speculate four outcomes as the chunk scale. Every outcome follows some rules which are mixed in a logic hypothesis, and reflects several layers of the urban framework.

s the continuing exploration on the selected chunk, there are three features of the chunk. Firstly, the growing population resulted in the high density urban form. Secondly, the new constructed skyports guided the distribution of commercial, residential and industrial areas. rban Amenities Distribution Evolution is based on rule 3 (Maximum distance of all amenities is x km from the skyport). Urban amenities such as shopping malls, museum, theater, will gradually move into the range of skyport, and new amenities will be allocated in some new skyport cities. In order to promote other cities’ economic development, commercial area and residential area will be the first to transform and then industrial area will occur around the boundary of skyports from 2025-2030. Besides, in order to segregate industrial from residential and agricultural land, several green rings will gradually appear from 2035 to 2050. 60

From 2030-2050,due to several skyports will start to be constructed, building density will also become higher around those skyports. 62

ules’ combination Outcome 1: at first, we have tested the outcome of 20 skyports, and the maximum radius with amenities of skyport is 5km. The maximum distance between skyports is 15km.Land use proportion is relatively average. Based on outcome 1, the agricultural land will be 80% which means it will not replace too much agricultural land into urban space. However the connection among skyports seems less.

irstly, we considered to randomly combined the rules that we came up with before mid-semester. Each of them will produce different outcome of the city. Then, we also think about building typology in skyports cities . Under our rules, the new constructed skyports will guide the distribution of commercial, residential and industrial areas and the building GFA will be from high to low gradually surrounding the skyports as the center. Therefore, we have thought about what building will form the new city in 2050 and what infrastructure will be complement.

e propose that a new design of the adaptive building typologies in the future.The core system performs as building structure and contains a complete sustainable energy system. The number of volumes , which are installed on the core system, is based on the populaton growth and the density of inhabitants in the area. To adapt to the changing GFA and population density, this typology allow building to function as low-density residential buildings or skyscrapers.

he idea about typology of buildings with aprons is trying to adapt the cities have flying cars as general transportation. However, that might cause noise and air pollution around all kinds of buildings. Moreover, if all buildings have aprons, people seems will not have to walk and cities will not necessary to combine all kinds of buildings within a 2 million people city. Therefore, we think it will be better to treat flying cars as a public transport and it will be connected transport network among different cities.

hat will the city look like in the scale of urban chunk? We speculate that Taihu Region will be integrated through aerial transportation intensively in 2050. Compared to the Lake Road with the speed limit of 40 per hour at the present, the mobility will be more efficient. The old style road will be reconstructed as a green belt. The sky station will become the centre of the city and the landmark of city.

n the human view, the closest area is high GFA commercial area, and the boundary is the industrial area. The further distance from the sky-port, there are more green lines between the city. Valued by the human experience and ecological balance, this is the best scenario of the future Taihu region.

nside the skyport building, people can get access to the upcoming or leaving aircrafts at every level. There is a portal in the middle of the building and the underground space will be used as parking lot.

MID-SEMSTER REFLECTIONS

B

efore the mid-sem, we initially established the rules to simulate our scenario of skyport city. We understood these rules as the restrictions or frameworks to build the city, so the numbers and proportions in the rules were set as constants firstly. Through the discussion and feedback, we improved the rules of the game and they should be explained as how the rules are relevant and critical in response to the scenario, background and vector of change. And the variables involved in the rules should be changeable and logical to operate as a formal and organisational generator to produce different outcomes. Following the rule system, we illustrated 5 outcomes. Then we valued these possible scenarios as the worst case or best case scenario by reviewing all the potential outcomes. By mulling the feedback, It is necessary for us to think about these next questions.

1. Can the outcomes be more dramatic? We will keep the outcomes as the scale of urban plan drawings and give up the visioning of the traditional Arctic urban model. So our next step is to propose some new building typologies to apply in the outcomes. 2. How to define the hierarchy of transportation networks in Aloft City? Because our theme is Skyport City about the renovation of transportation, so the hierarchy of transportation networks also becomes the issue we need to solve. We try to present the evolution of the roads in the urban chunk scale and the scenes of future city or street view to illustrate the hierarchy of transportation networks. 3. What infrastructure system will be developed to support the operation of aloft city? Through our discussion on the urban design and architectural design perspectives, we classify the infrastructure system as one part of building typology. So the next proposal on the operation of infrastructure systems will be integrated with the part of building typology. 98

4. Do the rules only benefit mobility? Or potentially more? For this moment, we show that the rules only benefit mobility. Actually, mobility is the most obvious and important benefit brought by the change. Simultaneously, other potential benefits will be shown as the form of architectural and urban scheme in the vision of our Aloft City, such as economy, ecology and ego. 5. How to guide the city to adapt to flying cars in future? It means we need a series of points, diagrams or observations to explain how we arrive at the scenario. And clarifying the potential possibilities of the advances in flying car technology in the future is what we need in the part of background and vectors of change.

rban system will significantly change in 4 aspects: road network, transport, land use, building density & elevation. Firstly, road network will gradually transform with the skyport as the center and 70% of roads will become footpaths and cycling ways. Secondly, transportation efficiency will highly improve. For instance, in 2020, we need to spend 1h30mins by car or 2h30mins by high speed train to Suzhou, but in 2050, we only take 15mins to Suzhou by flying car. Thirdly, for land use, in 2020, most of the lands are industrial and agricultural land, however in 2050, there are more commercial and residential area. Finally, about building density and elevation, in2020, the building density is quite average. Then, in 2050, building density will be gradually decreased from skyports to the edge of cities.

esign & speculate the typologies of the centralized transportation architecturally , which is the skyport, and it is the key to coordinate the fly drone around Lake Tai, The new ideas is driven from the existing fact in 2020 which the bus is the major public transport and demonstrating it’s necessary, whilst the insufficiency, because the way people using it has to be more thoughtful, so the question was to seeking the value between the transportation and destinations.

The skyport is designed as three layers, first is the departure which coordinates the bus (marked the color blue, and it is representative of the internal city transport), and second layer is the platform for culture exchange and commercial (marked the color red). The third layer is the tower which elevating the flying cars into attitudes.

n imagination, a coworker was standing on the 55th floor, looking out over the central Skyport city, where he could see the distinct and the layers of buildings , which they were distributed clearly that people could recognized of a commercial or residential area, but the one most obvious, the centralized Skyport. The ambition is clear, is that the skyport, made up a radiational city guid, oordinating the city’s transportation. The adoption of this elevating tower will be a tool to distinguish the noise from the air drones. Also, the engagement of skoport can be complementary with surrounding buildings for commercial and cultural uses. The size of the skyport will be variable based on the demanded services of the population.

The First scene is after dropping off from a bus, Mr.X realised he has a meeting 20 mins far in Suzhou. But he was not rush, the air drone will take himself to the destination in 15mins, based on the convinence of the new urban infrastructure and new tecnology

Because, the bus serves the internal Skyport cities , yet the Air platform is a station where to take citizens to other Skyport City, devote to external transportation.

hen he went to the platform. He saw that there were bunches of retailers, and some shops were promoting the ChangXing’s history and selling the local merchandise. So above all , we believe that after the flying car becomes the primary transportation, the citizens will not need to worry about the time spent on the way to their workplace. Subsequently , the population in 2050 will be distributed evenly based on the technology.

ompared to the skyport in Changxing chunk, the skyport in Suzhou is located in the vicinity of the lake in the park. To match with its contextual environments and urban morphology, the skyport has a lower FAR, citizens have two options to get to the skyport, walking and public transportation. The middle layer is the space for culture exchange and commercial activities. The top layer is the launch platforms for aircrafts and people. Surrounding the skyport, the local city lifestyle is livable and ecological.

n 2020, Changxing actually is a small county which relies on agricultural income, one outcome in Changxing is that there will be a sharp decline in agricultural land use, and based on the analysis, we speculate the evolution is that the proportion of industrial land use will be larger than before, however, the new eco industry will spring up, to solve the issue of lack of agriculture land, vertical farms will be mixed with the traditional industry area.

he new urban environment, facilitate the possibility of ‘A pedestrians City’, this said, the traffic congestion has always been a common problem in big cities. In 2050,after the skyport adopted and the coordinating the urban planning, those main roads for cars will be replaced by pedestrian and bike ways. On the way from dwellings to the skyport, citizens will have more green space and lower carbon footprint.

kyport City we developed is a particular urban system based on the series of rules and a set of principles that is integrated and created around multiple factors and data including land-use, population, green spaces and waterways. By working with the rules we produce the different outcomes dependent on the changeable parameters to simulate the configuration of urban form. It is an approach to recognize how urban frameworks are shaped by the negotiation of existing and designated merits or impacts in Taihu region. It is also an exploration on the gamification of this system algorithmically and practically. Skyport City is one potential scenario optimised around a set of values, positions and ideas produced by our group, and it deserves to explore and prove the speculation on the future urban frameworks. Beside, and clarifying the potential possibilities of the advances in flying car technology in the future is what we need in the part of background and vectors of change. Importantly, look back what we have manifested, can be realized that our theory also needs to be integrated with existing facilities and technology, and the reflection is clear that is to appreciate the existing,and then toward future.
