New New Urbanism Final 3. Tutor: MarcusWhite
This studio will focus on design and analysis strategies for urban regeneration and densification in central Footscray in particular the Irving Street, Leeds Street and the Footscray Station Precinct. A critical review of current planning strategies for the Activity Centre / Transit City will be undertaken. Students will familiarise themselves with some of the back ground to Melbourne 2030 and look at international precedents for densification. Students will critique the existing Urban Design Framework for Footscray through propositional design esquisses, investigating a variety of specialised design techniques. Point-cloud data from the Leica 3D Terrestrial Scanner will be utilised. Students will learn 3D and 4D spatial analysis techniques through digital modelling and physical modelling (dust printing). Tests of existing streets for visual connectivity (visual graph analysis), solar access and pedestrian connectivity will be conducted. What is learned from these investigations will then be used for design synthesis. Students will identify development opportunities within the study area and design urban spaces or mixed use buildings according to their design framework rules. Projects will be required to fit into the envelopes, massing and program that they students set up in the initial esquisses. This will involve developing architectural strategies to work within their ‘regs’ such as filling, subtracting, squashing, fragmenting, stuffing, carving etc. A solid grounding in 3D modelling skills is desirable for students choosing this studio. The studio will be run in parallel with the SOFT SITE elective which will teach flexible site modelling technology. Though not compulsory, it will be beneficial for students doing this studio to also enrol in the SOFT SITE elective.
