What is the City?

AN AMBITIOUS FUTURE OF THE CITY City is a constant process evolving with time which has a constant flow of movement inherited by people. People tend to become main element responsible for the type of growth it undergoes. The future city of my choice would reflect public movement and interractive spaces to an extremene extend challenging the present static movement and structure of its functioning and architecture. The city of future can act as a metabolic modern flow of events and movements which challenges the present. It has a potential of becoming a combination of plathora flow of varied experiences which change with time and evolves into a complete new experience. City as described is an amalgamation of innumerable forces which lead to its growth and development while time is a driving force which allows and integrates those forces to act constantly. So city is bounded to change while time is a constant which is responsible for the change.

TIME AND CITY Time has a power to cause damage as well as heal the damage with its constant creation of changes in city and city life. City can also lead to a failure with time depending on the type of change it has undergone. Time is the only significant element affecting human life through its unstoppable characteristics. It is a predominant factor which accelerates change. Time itself is a constant process which is responsible for different irreversible occurrences. Its said that to succeed, one should catch time because it’s the only factor in life which will never wait or get paused or stopped. The change occurred with time can lead to positive as well as negative irreversible circumstances. It is responsible to bring change in every aspect of life such as human nature, technology, geography, environment, physique etc.. But the fact is that in a way humans are those who adher the type of change caused to the environment, be in natural or physical experiences. Time is a factor that brings change but humans are the resources who fuel and shape certain type of change.

DATA ANALYSIS The future city concept needed a collection of data to analyse and study the present movement and scenarios. The data collection of Melbourne CBD helped me evaluate the present functioning of the city and its events and prorams. The main field of interest was developing a people focussed city, so the focus was to study public space and program connections while understandingpedestrian and vehicular flow of movement hindering safety of people and even analysing daily commute for pedestrians and then speculating the needs and changes. The data analysis started by mapong the building programs and its walkable intensity connections using the static available data on open melbourne portal. The use of various grasshopper scripts was done to analyse live pedestrian as well as traffic data sets. Final speculations were derived and further used to develop concept supporting the idea of the metabolic future city approach. The datasets helped to analyse the movement pattern and need.

ANALYSIS OF CHANGE OVER TIME OF EXISTING BLOCK 35 The durinal analysis was done by mapping the change of programs in 24 hrs in a day in three deifferent periods. 1. PRE LOCKDOWN,2019 2. DURING LOCKDOWN,2020 3. POST LOCKDOWN,2021 The analysis mapped live pedestrian movement day in a day in the selected block to analysie change in pedestrian movement with the variation in usage of programs in all the periods. The final speculations derived that the pedestrian movement has reduced a lot post covid19 effect. What if the program distribution supports reduced pedestrian movement in city and increases in block connectivity and activities amongst people.

FORMATION OF URBAN RULES Major formation of urban rules is done on the basis of conceptual ideas which are important design and structural elements supporting the ideas. These rules determine the flexible and fixed elements of the design and proposition. Rules make the idea of design clear and helps in determining important aspects of the design. 6 Major rules are formed which are based on specific speculations derived by live and static data analysis of the existing CBD. The rules focuss on the elements supporting 1. Growth of the city 2. Change in programs in 24 hours 3. Multifunctional modules 4. Designing programatic modules 5. Connections and bridged incremental open spaces 6. Constant access cores 7. Lifting the built 8. Use of vegetation and aesthetics etc.... The rules were firstly made and then updated after the midsem proposition to form final rules supporting the final design outcomes and speculations.
