VOLUNTEERING AT RNZYS To meet our vision and purpose our Club has a number of unique opportunities during 2020/2021 when the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron celebrates the 150th Anniversary and hosts the defense of The 36th Americas Cup. Along with our ‘business as usual’ we can expect visitors to the RNZYS including: • Members of Yacht Clubs with whom we have reciprocal rights • Members of other New Zealand Yacht Clubs • Members of the public • People taking part in other events associated with either the Cup or our 150 year • Sponsors and VIPs • Media and many more All of the events will be taking place during our busy spring and summer racing seasons, and continue throughout the year for RNZYS’ sesquicentennial We want to ensure the business as usual events run smoothly alongside simultaneous functions - greeting and socialising with visitors, normal business operations, and the opportunity to showcase the club. Our building is attractive and unique in terms of its location and interior. It is also home to a large amount of Americas Cup memorabilia as well as one of the best collections of Yachting Cups and trophies in the World. The club has a number of event spaces with stunning panoramic harbour and marina views catering for a variety of events, together with a reasonable amount of parking and taxi access. There is a separate programme for the on water volunteers and along with our Sailing Director, Laurie Jury, Miranda Farr is the project coordinator for this group. The overall objectives for Club based activities are to • ensure members are well catered for during this busy period • provide effective hosting to visitors • showcasing the club at it’s very best • accommodate the members events simultaneously with external functions • be proactive attracting new members • encourage sales such as merchandise, food and beverage • lay the foundations the Team New Zealand fan base for future America’s Cups There are a variety of positions available which will help us achieve our purpose and vision through this period.

HISTORY Auckland’s hills and shores wrap around the sparkling Waitemata Harbour, making it a natural venue for boating of all types. The foundations of the city were laid in 1840 and the occasion was immediately marked by a regatta on the harbour. It was an appropriate portent of things to come as yachting and boating flourished on the harbour and ultimately grew to enjoy an international reputation.

In 1901, the AYC changed its name to the New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The following year the Squadron celebrated a major milestone when it received a warrant in the name of King Edward VII elevating its status to a Royal club.

Eleven years later, a small group of yachtsmen made the first attempt to establish an Auckland Yacht Club. It was short lived, as were several subsequent efforts at getting a club off the ground. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron traces its origin back to the 1871 incarnation of the Auckland Yacht Club, with 30 yachts and 120 members on its register.

During both world wars, yacht racing was largely suspended in Auckland. Members of the RNZYS served in all theatres of both wars and in all the armed services. A number of members who owned launches and were not able to serve abroad, were involved in harbour defence and patrol duties.

By then, the city had grown from a scattering of tents and shacks into a much more substantial and thriving venture, with the harbour playing a central role in its progress. By the turn of the century, yacht racing was a thriving sport, attracting crowds of spectators and detailed reports in the local newspapers. Under the leadership of some of the city’s prominent captains of industry and commerce, the AYC showed continued growth. A tremendous rivalry between the Logan and Bailey boatbuilding families spurred the growth of an outstanding fleet of racing yachts, most of which joined the AYC fleet.

With this recognition membership numbers almost doubled from 157 in 1901 to 300 in 1903.

To accommodate steady growth, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron moved through a succession of rented premises in the city until in 1955 it bought a handsome twostorey brick house in Parliament Street with sweeping views over the Waitemata Harbour. A decade later, the RNZYS acquired its current premises at Westhaven, first as a lease and subsequently as a purchase. From the 1960s, the RNZYS was at the fore- front of a steady rise in international competition. In 1966, James Davern sailed his yacht Fidelis across the Tasman Sea and swept to line honours victory in the gruelling 630 mile Sydney-Hobart Race. Fidelis set a new race record and the 17 hour margin between 1st and 2nd still stands as the longest in the race’s history.

Three years later, Chris Bouzaid and a RNZYS crew took on the elite of international yacht racing. Travelling to Heligoland, Germany, Bouzaid and his Rainbow II crew won the prestigious One Ton Cup against a line up of seasoned competitors from the USA , Germany, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Holland and Switzerland. On the foundations laid by these successes, the RNZYS trophy cabinets have played host to some of the biggest prizes in world yachting including the Half, One and Two-Ton Cups, the Admiral’s Cup, the Kenwood Cup, the Champagne Mumm World Cup, the Whitbread Round the World Trophy, the Louis Vuitton Trophy and the America’s Cup. Carrying the RNZYS burgee into battle, Team New Zealand won the America’s Cup in San Diego in 1995, then successfully defended it on the Hauraki Gulf in 2000. After losing to Switzerland in 2003, the RNZYS became the only yacht club in the world to challenge and win the America’s Cup twice when Emirates Team New Zealand scored a 7-1 victory over Oracle Team USA in Bermuda in 2017. Now, coinciding with the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s 150th anniversary, Emirates Team New Zealand will mount an Auckland defence of the Cup in revolutionary unballasted foiling monohulls in 2021.

AMERICA’S CUP HISTORY EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND

1995 In 1995, Team New Zealand beat Team Dennis Conner 5–0 in a major upset off San Diego, California after winning the right to challenge in the Louis Vuitton Cup. Their boats were fast, they had an experienced crew led by skipper Russell Coutts, and they were ably led by Sir Peter Blake. As NZL 32 approached the finish line on the last race, sailing commentator Pete Montgomery made the now famous line “The America’s Cup is now New Zealand’s cup!”

2000 Team New Zealand (NZL 60) beat Italy’s Prada Challenge (Luna Rossa) 5–0 in the 2000 match held on Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. On crossing the finish line in the final race, commentator Peter Montgomery exclaimed “The America’s Cup is still New Zealand’s cup!!” – echoing his comment in 1995 America’s Cup. A notable feature was Russell Coutts handing over the helm to Dean Barker in the final race.

2003 In 2003, Team New Zealand’s eight-year reign ended after they were defeated 5–0 by Swiss-based challenger Alinghi. Team New Zealand dubbed their campaign the “Loyal” campaign, featuring a Silver fern flag with the word “Loyal” and an existing song of the same name by New Zealand musician Dave Dobbyn.

2007 TNZ announced their intention to challenge Alinghi at the 2007 Valencia America’s Cup, with Emirates on board as title sponsor, and Grant Dalton as Team Boss. Dean Barker skippered a more international team than ever before. TNZ were among the “big four” syndicates leading up to the 2007 Cup. The big four consisted of TNZ, Alinghi, BMW Oracle Racing, and Luna Rossa. On 3 July 2007, Emirates Team New Zealand lost their final race to Alinghi bringing Alinghi’s race wins to 5, successfully defending the 32nd America’s Cup.

2013 The race series was very dramatic, with a number of incidents including Oracle Team USA being docked two points (meaning they started the competition on −2 points) and having two main crew members banned. By 19 September 2013, Team New Zealand lead Oracle Team USA 8–1 needing just one more win to take the Cup. In Race 13 Team New Zealand were minutes away from winning the cup when the race time limits came into effect, causing the race to be cancelled. The race was then replayed and Oracle Team USA won – and went on to win all last eight races to come from behind – and take the Cup It had been the longest-ever event by both number of days and races, and the first since the 25th America’s Cup to feature a winner-take-all final race.

2017 As the leading challenger, they chose to face Land Rover BAR in the first playoff round. Despite suffering a capsize in race 4, the outcome of the series was a 5-2 series victory for Team New Zealand. In the finals match against Artemis Racing, Team New Zealand secured a second 5-2 series win, and therefore progressed to the America’s Cup series against Oracle Team USA. Having won the challenger series, Oracle Team USA was able to impose a penalty point on the eventual challenger for the 35th America’s Cup. Therefore, Team New Zealand started the 35th America’s Cup racing with minus one point and would need to win eight races in order to get the 7 points needed to win the America’s Cup. After five days of racing, which included nine races, Team New Zealand beat Oracle Team USA by eight races to one, or by 7 points to 1, and thereby won the Cup.
