Budgeting starts at home by Robert Rushford

BUDGETING STARTS AT HOME Robert Rushford

Our government is full of men with fewer numbers of females. The Government is responsible for running our country and keeping our economy ticking away, hopefully not accumulating more debt and leaving our children to pay off the sins we incur today.

My opinions here are just that, my opinions, however, I have seen time and time again examples of women running their household budgets. Sometimes these budgets have been unbelievably “tight” yet these Australian women still manage to feed the family and pay the bills.

Is there truth in my belief that women, in general, seem to manage the coffers better than men? I listened to a group of young women the other day, who were complaining about their husband’s less than acceptable restraint in spending money. Society has changed dramatically over the last few decades with more and more women holding down full time work and running the household. Their time management skills are amazing, as they seem to juggle so many different roles at the same time.

I, Robert Rushford confess I am in awe of many young mums, middle aged mums and retired mums who seem to actually save money out of nowhere. I spoke with a couple recently and learned the secrets - well I am sure they kept a lot back “Secret Womens’ Business” and all. Write a Budget Yes you heard me sit down and work out your fixed expenditures. You can’t cut back on these, as your financial health will suffer. Shelter, Food, Clothing, Transport, Medical and on it goes. Saving occurs when you cut down, or out, dining out costs, so brown bag it to work. Coffee costs, so bring a flask, or take some coffee into work with you and make it in the office. Parking - take public transport to work when you can and cut the costs. These prudent creatures (women) - like the mother of Robert Rushford, cooked meals, made the kid’s clothes and shoes last longer (yes she had many tricks up her sleeve), allowed the children a certain number of gifts, with most gifts being given at Christmas and respective birthdays. Those who don’t have money to throw away usually do better than those who do. Have you ever wondered why high earners are always broke? It all starts at home. Watch the pennies

and start to take some lessons from our women. Now getting back to our Government - maybe we should consider having a female treasurer. Food for thought.
