hase I renovations that began in the community center’s west wing this spring are all but completed. Finishing touches like fresh wall paint, window treatments, upgraded LED lighting, flooring and ceiling tiles are added to what are now being called the emerald, sapphire and ruby rooms. While select areas of the center have been repaired, changed or upgraded such as the auditorium, stage and individual club rooms, it’s been well over 50 years since a major restoration of this kind has occurred. The current work that is

in progress will bring the entire look and feel of the structure into the 21st century by the end of 2016. As the job transitions into Phase II, many senior citizen and summer youth programs that are currently in progress will continue without interruption as done previously in phase one. New hallway closures and wooden partitions will be erected until approximately September 30 when Phase II work is expected to be completed. New entry doors are being installed in the community center’s inner courtyard area for greater access into the west wing.

Dear Cooperators, The weather has been wonderful this summer. I hope everyone is enjoying the beauty of Rochdale’s grounds and bringing their children and grandchildren to all the new playgrounds throughout the campus. The Annual Music Festival is set to begin soon. Every Sunday in August, in front of the Community Center, a different musical genre will be playing. Whether it’s Jazz or Gospel, R&B or Reggae, please come out and enjoy these events. The board will not meet in August but will resume regularly scheduled meetings in September. So far this year the staff, management, and the board have worked tirelessly to continue to improve and repair this community. Following are a few projects I would like to highlight. Rochdale’s own Dalilah Muhammad competes in Olympic games in Rio By Susan Van Brackle
R
ochdale’s own Dalilah Muhammad is literally hurdling her way to track and field stardom with every running competition she performs. At the age of seven she began participating in RV’s NOVAS Track Club where she showed great promise. By 2007, at the age of 17, Dalilah was named the fastest youth hurdler while attending Benjamin Cardozo High
School in Bayside, Queens. In 2013, Ms. Dalilah had won a silver medal in Moscow as she represented the United States in the women’s 400 m hurdles at the 14th International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Moscow Russia. Fast forward three years and Ms. Muhammad, now 26, stands poised to represent America at the XXXI Olympic games in Rio de Janiero after qualifying in the 400 m Olympic trials.
Nadirah and Askia Muhammad are Dalilah’s proud parents and Rochdale residents for nearly 30 years. They attributed her abundant track and field accomplishments in part to an early interest in running, which was cultivated here at the NOVAS Track Club, which currently operates a summer program Rochdale’s Community Center. Coach George Taylor and the entire NOVAS Track team are very proud of Dalilah’s accomplishments. He continues
training the next group of running phenoms at Roy Wilkins Park here in southeast Queens. Dalilah has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Southern California and continues to compete on behalf of the university. Her recent win at the qualifying competition puts Dalilah on the ground in Rio to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Way to go Dalilah! Good luck from RV.

Key Food transitions store ownership By Susan Van Brackle

hange is in the air at the local Key Food store based at 166-02 Baisley Boulevard. It seems like only a moment ago that the supermarket experienced $1,000,000 in renovations and improvements to its product offerings and services. Now, the grocery’s current owner has plans to retire and transition the 2,500 square foot operation into the hands of yet another capable
Key Food executive franchisee. Before any conversion was finalized, Rochdale’s board of directors screened the potential new owner and conducted a financial fitness assessment. Key Food employees have been given the option to stay at the Baisley Boulevard Key Food location or transfer to another one of their choice. The store will continue to operate as Key Food Grocery and not Bravo.

General Manager’s Monthly Report for June 2016
The Power Plant Upgrades and improvements are happening all around Rochdale Village. From new playgrounds and lobby ceilings, to the new brick work, energy efficient lighting and roof repairs. The corporation is currently in the midst of renovating the Community Center and repaving six parking lots while adding 64 new spaces and motorcycle parking throughout. These upgrades are important to the community and highly visible. However, there are some upgrades that are not seen but they are no less important. New backup generators keep essential lighting on during emergencies, new electrical panels help keep Rochdale’s power safe, new gas meters maintain proper flow for efficiency. Boilers and turbines, while not visible, are substantially significant with regard to Rochdale’s infrastructure. The boilers and turbines are arguably the most important of all mentioned because without them there is no way to generate heat, hot water, cool air or electricity to the cooperative. They are housed in our power plant and have been providing Rochdale with the previously mentioned services for over 50 years. For most shareholders, the Power Plant is shrouded in mystery as is its interaction with the buildings and our daily lives. Following is a small
BOILERS – 4 Iron Works packaged boilers producing 100,000 lbs. of steam per hour provide hot water to the buildings and steam to the turbines creating electricity.

The Board and Management were faced with 2 difficult choices, purchase a new turbine or rebuild the old one. After weeks of research and deliberation the choice became clear. The Board voted to rebuild turbine #2 sending parts throughout the country to be machined and assembled saving Rochdale 5 million dollars. Turbine #2 is currently in service, running at optimum performance and is under warranty for 10 years. Turbine #1 was taken apart for its 5 year inspection in the Spring of this year. Similarly to turbine #2 extensive wear and damage were found warranting for a replacement or reconstruction of turbine #1. We are happy to announce that a similar solu-
tion was found for this turbine by which the Board voted in July to also rebuild turbine #2. This decision will save Rochdale millions of dollars in material costs and backup power. The rebuild is scheduled to be completed in three months and we look forward to having the second and final turbine up and running at peak capacity also with a 10 year warranty.

Expanded customer service begins in Maintenance effective Saturday, August 5 By Susan Van Brackle
B
y popular demand, Saturdays have been added to the Maintenance Department’s customer service lineup. Expansion of maintenance service options is a subject that often comes up during
Group meetings. Effective, Saturday August 5, busy cooperators will have be able to speak with a live customer service agent on one extra day of the week. According to Rochdale Village Maintenance Director Corey Jones, a representative will be on-hand to follow up on already established service requests, address
emergencies by dispatching handymen as needed. No walk-in service requests are allowed on Saturday since the Maintenance office is closed. Non-emergency service requests can only be initiated by calling (718) 276-5700 x349 or 350 during regular business hours.
A reminder about RV’s no pets policy according to the Occupancy Agreement By Susan Van Brackle
S
ince the cooperative’s inception in 1963, Rochdale Village has had a firm “no pets” policy. The policy is currently stipulated on page 15 of each resident’s Occupancy Agreement under Section 10, Rule #17 yet, cooperator complaints are still flooding into the Public Safety division about policy violators. On any given day, unauthorized animals, especially dogs, can be seen throughout the complex. Animals have been spotted being strolled through mall grocery stores, across the grounds and even being walked in lobbies. Many residents have come face-to-face with large dogs or have had their quiet enjoyment
disturbed due to barking heard at all hours of the day and night. Other cooperators have unexpectedly stepped in a hot pile of dog waste on the campus or have had to navigate noxious liquids in elevators and stairwells. At Rochdale Village, unless a pet has been legally identified as a service dog or emotional support animal for a resident with legally recognized physical or mental disabilities, having one is in direct violation of the occupancy agreement, and is subject to fines or lease termination. Moreover, owners of unauthorized pets that are unleashed, unvaccinated, uninsured and unlicensed are further subject to penalties ranging anywhere up to $2,000 if violations of the New York City Dog laws are imposed. Feral cats and other un vaccinated pets are breeding
grounds for disease-causing agents that may lead to the animal’s ill health or expose humans to rabies and other pathogenic viruses. Over time, improperly managed pets promote the spread of fleas that can fester in walls and possibly transfer between apartments. Residents are encouraged
to report unauthorized animal sightings to Rochdale Village Public Safety any time of the day or night. Be sure to note the date, time and location of the sighting. Even pets with legal designation can be evicted if they disturb the quiet enjoyment of cooperators.

I Pledge
By Margaret I. Robinson
By Anthony Blake
Why make excuses for getting old It’s a blessing to watch your life unfold When you made that first baby step To life’s hard struggle while Jesus wept Remember when you started school? When we were taught the golden rule Do unto others but watch your step To any injustice done while Jesus wept. We have so much to be thankful for Let’s count our blessings Let your knee touch the floor We were guided by our parents Step by step We made it to this age while Jesus wept Like a butterfly that leaves its cocoon Learn to smell the roses, the flowers in bloom Learn to respect each other while you step by step We have gained so much wisdom while Jesus wept. And then he smiled.
Where people will all get along Have respect for one another in a world of belong Go from Hatred to love Be caring and kind like a Dove But one moment as I am not done A world that bows for prayer Having a vision in knowing how to get here and there Encouraging one another Excepting the person being the other A world expressing good wishes Living in a world of no limitations I pledge all the above However, there is plenty more to think of Not have to worry about harm becoming danger Definitely a world of drawn back bullets with locked up guns All lives striving being among A life of living, but with laughter and having fun This is my pledge I want all to look upon It shouldn’t be a tomorrow being a mystery A look back shouldn’t be struggles being history I pledge more than an American Flag It’s not a game of tag But be positive and not be a drag I pledge, I pledge, I pledge A world that we all can relate But be a world that is willing to associate.
Not for Publication By Ed Miller My shadow embraces the myriad of gray granite stone monuments embracing souls of flown, departed, once part of my existence, my life. The small rectangular plot sits bare, waiting the digger’s spade where my weary combination of chemicals yearn to mix with earth’s DNA. The engraved inscription will do little justice to my infinitesimal moment or my grandios achievement that has made my purpose here worthwhile. Before I am completely forgotten, those I have known and loved will have opportunities to recall, laud my humble contribution, generation. Let us appreciate the magazines, press which embalms my ideas, my thoughts the books collected in homes, libraries with philosophers, poets, authors, artists. Still, I will not lay my quill down, keyboard, my brush, nor my chisel, for I still have much to say, write, art to create, Life to live, before I earn my rectangle.

ords of encouragement were conveyed to youth that attended BlackOut a Day of Solidarity, hosted by Rochdale’s Youth Planning Committee chairman and 2nd Vice President, Mario Turner. This well attended impromptu session was recognized as a day set aside to show community solidarity against the ongoing rash of police killings taking place nationwide. The event was also designed to educate today’s children about the Civil Rights movement. Student counselors from The Child Center of New York, M.S.72 branch, members of the NOVAS Track Club and the Elite Marching Band received and afternoon of lunch and presentations from community leaders like Reverend Kelvin Walter, Jr. from the Church of the Resurrection in Harlem New York; life coach and violence interrupter Norris Batts, Carver Bank’s Onica Phillip, Attorney-at-Law Hettie Powell and Sergeants Gerritano and Echevarria from the neighborhood’s 113th Precinct. Pastor Walter reminded the audience that we need to get our
mindset back. “If you do the right thing [in life], the right thing will occur.” This interactive meeting prompted questions from students about the recent wave of police brutality stories in the media today. Sergeant Gerritano offered, “It’s my opinion that no police officer across the world sets out to cause harm to someone when they begin their day. A shooting never leaves you. It is tragic on both sides of the coin.” Parents also asked for guidance on resources that could youngsters to more productive activities. One such initiative recommended by Sergeant Echevarria is the Explorer’s Program. Residents should also attend Community Council meetings that take place at the 113th Precinct on the third Monday of every month. Jarred Evans was the program’s youth speaker. He attributed his life’s accomplishments to having a strong family unit, finishing his education with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Communications from the University of Cincinnati and staying focused on his career in football. His message to youth, “The door is open. Take advantage of the opportunities that are available to you.” (see photos on page 15 and on Facebook.)

ear after year, the Public Safety committee hosts a National Night Out program for this community. Chairman and first Vice President of Rochdale’s board of directors, Talib Bey, serves as Master of Ceremonies for the nationwide initiative that is designed to bring about awareness relative to neighborhood crime prevention. The event was honored with the presence of Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY 5th District) and other local officials. Assemblymember Vivian E. Cook (AD32) opened this year’s ceremony with welcoming remarks while Rev. Dr. Terry Calhoun granted a prayer. Speaker Linda High shared poignant reflections about the painful loss of her 33 year old son to gun violence. “No one wins when you become a victim,” she said speaking of both her own family and the family of the shooter. Ms. High credits New York State grief counseling programs that allowed her
changing experience. “Thanks to the work of the NYPD, they found my son’s shooter and I was able to move from victim to victorious” said Ms. High. There was an even more significant meaning to this year’s National Night Out celebrations. Two long standing Rochdale Public Safety officers were honored posthumously. Special Officers Barry Oden and David Silva were recognized for their tireless service and dedication to Rochdale Village during their tenures. Both men passed away unexpectedly during the course of the year. Other awardees included Captain Lopez of the Public Safety department and 17 members of the cooperative’s Hall Patrol. Highlights of the evening included the traditional balloon release into the air to commemorate loved ones that were lost due to crime. Steel drum and dance performers lightened the mood and encouraged audience participation with their lively beats. (See photos on page 15)

Homegoing Tennyson Lowell Hall, Jr.
Sunrise: August 24, 1944 Sunset:
July 5, 2016
Beloved Brother of Ms. Jean Hall, Member of the Board of Directors Tennyson Lowell Hall, Jr. was born to the late Tennyson and Annie Hall in Jamaica, New York on August 24, 1944. He had one sister but treated his first cousins as his siblings. Tennyson entered into eternal rest on July 5, 2016. Tennyson, aka Butch to his family, and aka “T” to his friends had his fondest memories of the times he spent growing up in the South with the Hall family. Despite getting in trouble with Grand Daddy for being mischievous he loved being there. He often would say how his life would have been different if he had stayed in the South. Tennyson graduated from August Martin High School in Jamaica, New York. Alter graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his nation with honor and distinction. He was gifted with a voice and loved to sing. He joined Calvary’s choir lor a while under the direction of Michael Williams. Tennyson also had the gift of being able to sketch and draw. He helped little “Sis” Jean in a number of her homework projects over the years. He
loved to read and was very up to date on issues affecting African-Americans, particularly the challenges of young black men. This passion led him to serve as a mentor in a program for young boys in Rochdale Village. Tennyson retired from the United States Postal Service in 1999. In retirement, he enjoyed betting on those horses, watching his beloved sports golf football, basketball and baseball to name a few. He could speak to you about any subject and loved to debate anyone who would dare. ‘ Tennyson was a giving and loving person. He would help anyone he could. He was a fighter; he was fearfully and wonderfully made. Bereaved by his loss but uplifted by his home going is his devoted sister, Jean Hall; his cousins, Benzena (deceased), William, Deborah, Laverne, Naomi, Everlyn, Carolyn, Benjamin III, Raichelle, Wilberanne, lone, Sharon, Ronnie, Les, Khadijah, Grady, Shana, john, David, Brandon, Benjamin IV, Zachary, Austin, Ashley, Kyle, Kara, Kristin, Jessica, Jennifer, Jonathan, Brittani, Franchon, Tamara, Kevin, Tori, Shane and his best friend Scrap and a host of extended family and friends.
Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep by Mary Elizabeth Frye Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there; I did not die.
