GoGo Penguin Announce “Live from Studio Two”
By T. J. When it comes to live performance now and trying to reach an audience, people are having to think out of the box. The same goes with the U.K. band, GoGo Penguin. They’ve been wanting to perform live for some time now, and they’ve finally figured out a way to reach their audience. It took the band a while to decide on the location for presenting this event, which is actually a recorded event, although the whole show was recorded live… no overdubs, just the band performing. They checked out several locations, but they finally settled on the legendary Abbey Road studios in London, England and the title for this auspicious event is “GoGo Penguin Live from Studio Two.” This is the studio of choice for the legendary band, The Beatles, not to mention countless other bands and musicians. Nick Blacka, bassist for GoGo Penguin explains: “We didn’t want to perform in an empty venue. Somehow it just felt weird trying to create the energy of a concert in an empty room, but we had recorded an EP in Studio Two back in 2015 and loved the space and somehow it just made sense to film a show here” Pianist Chris Illingworth agrees: ‘It’s a really special space and we wanted somewhere intimate that we would be excited to work in and where we could tap into that sense of excitement that you get from a live concert.” Drummer Rob Turner says that it is all about the sound of the room: “When we perform we’re always reacting to each other but also the crowd. The people and the energy in the space is as much a part of the performance as we are. Studio Two is imbued with the ghosts of all the incredible music and musicians that have performed there. It has an atmosphere all of its own. You really feel the expanse of time, how much has happened before you and how much will continue to happen after you”. The band has brought in their regular lighting director, Lewis Howell, to handle all the lighting and visual effects and the show was recorded by their producer, Joe Reiser. The music presented this night will feature selections from their most recent release, GoGo Penguin, along with additional selections from their two previous albums, Man Made Object (2016) and A Humdrum Star (2018). This should be quite a performance when the band hailed as the “Radiohead of British Jazz” let loose in Studio Two at Abbey Road. We’re told to expect ‘ junglist rhythms, beautiful melodies and thunderous subbass’ from this great band. The show takes place this month on October 29th 2020 at 6PM (PST) / 9PM (EST).
