MDTC

What is the MDTC? The Maine Dance Teachers Club meets once a month during the school year in Waterville at the Opera House and Arts Space. Additionally an annual summer workshop is planned to bring together dancers from across the state.

WHO? The Maine Dance Teachers Club was founded many years ago by local dance teachers who had the dream of bringing together dancers and fellow teachers. Today it is successfully run by a board of directors including Miss Emily! WHAT? What does the MDTC do? The board of directors works hard to bring in well known dance teachers, choreographers and directors to teach classes to workshop participants. Come to a workshop and experience a day full of classes including, ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, and much more.

WHEN/WHERE? The MDTC meets on the first Sunday of each month in Waterville at the Opera House and Arts Space. Additionally in the Summer the MDTC plans a two day workshop for teachers and dancers. Miss Emily attends each workshop and is happy to help provide and organize transportation. WHY? Attending a MDTC workshop allows for a full day of dancing, exploration into new genres of dance, meeting fellow dancers and experiencing different styles of teaching. Broaden your dance education by attending a workshop, learn a lot and have fun dancing.

The Frog Princess

FROGS are a totem of change, or metamorphosis. It is the symbol of coming into one’s own creative power. The frog changes from an egg, to a polliwog, to a frog. Even after it becomes a frog, it lives close to and spends much time in the water. It always has contact with the creative force out of which it came. Usually frog people have strong ties to their own mothers. Frogs are also cold-blooded and take on the temperature of the surrounding area, therefore, people with this totem are often very sensitive to their surroundings and can rapidly change their moods to fit the circumstances.

Because FROGS live in both water and on land, linking to both of these elements and so results in a link to the lore of fairies and elves. They are also often linked to the moon (she moves the tides after all) and therefore the many Goddesses that are connected to the moon. They are known to be heralds of abundance or fertility and are said to hold the knowledge of weather and how to control it. Frog medicine can bring rains for every purpose – to cleanse, to heal, to helps things grow, to flood, to stir. Its energies can be used to bring light showers or downpours for most any purpose. A FROG coming into your life shows it’s time to ask yourself if it is time for a change. Are you becoming too bogged down in the day-to-day mire if your life? Do you need to invest in some new creative energy and make some changes? Are you drowning in emotions at the moment? The frog is calling for some change in the climatic conditions of your life.

December Monthly Objective Dances from o"er C#nt$es

Dances from O"er C#nt$es

Every human society practices dance... People around the world use dance to express themselves, pass on their histories and exercise their bodies. Learning about dances from other countries help us to become better dancers. For example the Nutcracker shows many different cultures including: The Spanish Dance of Spain The Chinese Dance of China The Russian Dance of Russia The Arabian Dance of North Africa and the Middle East Learning about dances from other cultures teaches us about differences and similarities in movement, about the history of dance and how dance evolves over time, about music and costumes from other counties and about learning to appreciate the cultural heritage of others.

December Movement Concept Weight and Flow

26

Weight and Flow Weight(n):

the amount or quantity of heaviness or mass,

amount a thing weighs. The force that gravitation exerts upon a body, equal to the mass of the body times the local acceleration of gravity.

It is important for dancers to distribute their weight evenly when dancing. It builds a strong and versatile dancer. Additionally, within movement, dancers can express to their audience many emotions and feelings through the heaviness or lightness in their movements.

Flow(n): an act of flowing movement in or as if in a stream. Dancers should understand how to flow from one movement to another gracefully and beautifully.

Rockland School of Ballet Outreach There is great need in our community, and Hospitality House, on the Old County Road in Rockport, often has children as well as adults in need of shelter. Job loss, divorce, domestic violence, and the death of a loved one are but some of the challenges that create a struggle to make ends meet and pay bills. Sometimes the impact of these hardships means the loss of adequate shelter. These people are our friends, family members, neighbors, and fellow schoolmates. This is why Rockland School of Ballet chose this local ministry for our ministry. Hospitality House is the local homeless shelter. It was started in the early 1990’s by the local area churches. The way Rockland School of Ballet can help is through a ‘SHOEBOX MINISTRY.’ The ‘SHOEBOX MINISTRY’ is this: Shoeboxes are covered with wrapping paper, and filled with necessary items, such as: toiletries (travel size shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, hairbrush/comb to name just a few), gloves &/or socks (in winter); (please see complete list at the studio.) And these boxes are taken to Hospitality House and when a person, or persons, in need comes to the shelter, they are given a shoebox with these basic necessities. Do you have a spare shoebox? Do you have travel size toiletry items, possibly from a hotel stay? Miss Emily has a collection of toiletries that have been donated from various people. If you do not have a shoebox – please pick one up from the waiting room, wrap it and fill it. And if you don’t have supplies, don’t forget – there are lots at the studio to fill your shoebox with. Maybe you can add a personal touch of a snack and/or gloves and a hat. Remember sometimes people flee their homes with nothing but the clothes on their back. My sister-in-law showed up on my doorstep, one day in her nightgown with her two small children. Your generosity will always be remembered. Thanks!!
