Monthly Objective

Dances from Other Countries Every human society practices dance... People around the world use dance to express themselves, pass on their histories and exercise their bodies. Learning about dances from other countries help us to become better dancers. For example the Nutcracker shows many different cultures including: The Spanish Dance of Spain The Chinese Dance of China The Russian Dance of Russia The Arabian Dance of North Africa and the Middle East Learning about dances from other cultures teaches us about differences and similarities in movement, about the history of dance and how dance evolves over time, about music and costumes from other counties and about learning to appreciate the cultural heritage of others.

December Movement Concept Weight and Flow

Weight(n):

the amount or quantity of heaviness or mass,

amount a thing weighs. The force that gravitation exerts upon a body, equal to the mass of the body times the local acceleration of gravity.

It is important for dancers to distribute their weight evenly when dancing. It builds a strong and versatile dancer. Additionally, within movement, dancers can express to their audience many emotions and feelings through the heaviness or lightness in their movements.

Flow(n): an act of flowing movement in or as if in a stream. Dancers should understand how to flow from one movement to another gracefully and beautifully.

The Story Behind The Bears Once upon a time long, long ago Miss Jessica came home to Maine for a visit and brought a present for Miss Emily. As Miss Emily excitedly unwrapped her present she discovered a beautiful stuffed bear, dressed in ballet clothes. She decided that she would bring the bear into the studio, name her Miss Jessica and have her watch classes all of the time. Just last year one of Miss Emily’s students came in and brought her a gift, an identical bear! Miss Emily dubbed this bear to be “Miss Emily” and set her on on the shelf next to Miss Jessica and there they sit watching over the studio all the time. And thus when you read your newsletter, you will find the two bears telling you what’s up from the studio, it’s actually a note from Miss Emily and Miss Jessica!

Rockland School of Ballet The Contemporary Movement

Nothing is More Revealing Than

MOVEMENT Rockland School of Ballet’s Contemporary Movement is a company division and was created with a vision of providing the midcoast Maine dance community space to come together and dance without judgement and reservation. Contemporary Movement provides dancers with a place to explore their passion, develop technique, and assimilate creativity. Each month dancers enter the studio and begin by discussing a current social issue. After gaining an understanding of the topic at hand, dancers learn a choreographed piece internalizing the movement, making it their own and sharing their story through dance. Contemporary Movement at Rockland School of Ballet offers students a safe, nurturing environment to hone their craft while continuing to develop their technique. In addition to regular classes and rehearsals, students are brought into the community to lead by example, telling stories and sharing experiences through the art of dance. Contact Rockland School of Ballet today to learn more about becoming part of the Contemporary Movement.
