A Note From The Directress Spring Recital Free to Patrons In an effort to make this spring’s show free to patrons, I have decided to not charge for tickets, but rather take donations at the door. The Strom performance SPACE will be free to us, BUT there will still be expenses. In my emails with the Camden Hills Administration this is what I learned about the “Non Rental Paying Category”

Miss Emily: “In planning the spring recital, I am wondering about how the "Non Rental Paying Category" works. If I do not charge for the recital, does this mean that the use of the auditorium is free, or are there costs involved?”

CHRHS Administration: “You are correct that if you do not charge an entry fee to your event, you do not pay rental fees for the auditorium. You are still liable for all tech worker, house manager, equipment rental, custodial and other charges.” These fees, tech, manager, equipment, custodial, etc… cost us about $800.00+ for The Snow Queen, a little bit less than half of the total cost of the production space – performance plus fees. This means that we will still have to charge a recital fee. But, since the fees will be less, we can pass the savings on to you. Therefore the recital fee will be reduced from $45.00 to $25.00 per family. This will help cover some of the expense and then hopefully the community will be generous in donations to cover the rest of the cost.

Thank you for your understanding, Miss Emily

Thank You This year’s production of The Snow Queen was a smashing success and would not have been possible without the hard work of all of our dancers and their families. From the bottom of our toes we thank you for a successful 2015 show and we look forward to next year’s production!

Monthly Objective

Body Awareness

“Children’s ability to reach out beyond themselves to learn more about the world rests on their confidence and self esteem, and these in turn depend on children feeling comfortable with themselves.” Ann Henderson The body is a dancer’s main tool and is particularly important for him/her to understand when practicing his/her art. Knowing how the body moves, how body parts work and the many different ways a body can move, as well as being able to isolate or combine different movements are all important for gross motor skill development and the creation of a dancer.

Rockland School of Ballet

January Movement Concept

Body Parts and Balance Body Parts(n):

A dancer uses his or her body to

tell a story. Sometimes dancers will use their full body and sometimes just one or two body parts. Some examples of using body parts while dancing include: - Isolations, the practice of moving one part of your body - Body Rolls, starting at your feet and moving up your body, one part at a time (like a snake) the practice of linking your isolations together - Body Halves, dancing with one half of your body while keeping the other half completely still - Emotions, using your full body tell a story

Balance(n): a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, a state of bodily equilibrium. Dancers needs strong balance to be able to stand on one leg, turn gracefully, go up and down on the floor and eventually go on pointe and stand on their toes. 9

Rockland School of Ballet’s Frog Princess Awards An Annual End of Year Ceremony and Celebration Every dancer enjoys the thrill of praise; the pride in achievement. Every dancer’s response to the Frog Princess Awards will be positive, immediate, and tangible. Every dancer is acknowledged - from the exceptional to the average - all seek recognition for their endeavors. Parents have the opportunity to see their children dance on their own, in an environment that is not competitive. Dancers maintain interest and enthusiasm over a period of years as they progress from level to level.

The Frog Princess Awards is a ready-made program of choreography that sets attainable goals for achievement. The Frog Princess Awards are a series of age- and level-appropriate distinctive choreographic compositions that students perform before an audience of parents and friends.

A most important aspect of the Frog Princess Awards is that they are NOT competitive - each student receives a medal, and a certificate. The Frog Princess Awards are a stress-free, enjoyable experience for teachers, dancers, and parents alike.

The fee is modest.

No heavy outlay for costumes: the dancers perform in their leotards. The entire learning process of the variations and the actual performance are a joyous experience for dancers.

Please mark your calendar! This year’s Frog Princess Awards will be Saturday, May 28, 2016

I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself. - Mikhail Baryshnikov

Manners for Dancers at Rockland School of Ballet Having reached the middle of the year at Rockland School of Ballet we find it is important to refresh all of our minds as to why we are here. One of the most important things to remember while in dance class is dancers’ manners! As we journey into 2015 we will be looking closely once again at our dancers’ manners and striving to be the best learners and best dancers we can be! We look forward to a wonderful spring with each an every one of you!

Manners for Dancers Dancers Show Respect for Themselves by: • Being prompt for class. • Being dressed in street clothes or warm up outerwear over ballet clothing

when coming to and leaving the studio. • Being dressed properly for class in assigned colored leotard without underwear under the leotard and tights, without jewelry (other than small earrings) and with shoe strings tied and tucked in. • Having their hair pulled back and secured in a bun. For shorter hair, pulled back from the face with a headband or clips is acceptable. No hair covering the neck or in the face will be permitted in class.

Dancers Show Respect for their Teacher and the Art Form they are Learning by: • Being properly dressed and ready for class on time. • Listening when the teacher speaks and always standing in a “proper dance

stance” while listening to the teacher give combinations or corrections. • Being prepared for their turn. • Always asking before leaving the room for any reason and upon returning,

entering quietly and going around the back of room, never through the dancers who are dancing. • Always finishing every exercise, never walking off noisily showing anger or aggravation. • Staying at the barre until all exercises are finished. • Curtsying to teachers as a form of greeting and parting whether in the waiting room or in the studio for class.

Dancers Show Respect for the Studio by: • Leaving gum, food and drinks in the dressing room. • Never hanging or leaning on the barres. • Never running or doing gymnastics in the studio or waiting room. • Putting trash in the proper place. • Putting away books and magazines when finished with them. • Being quiet in the waiting room. • Turning off and putting away cell phones. • Always keeping all belongings zipped and inside their dance bags. • Always keeping the dressing room in an orderly fashion.

15

Dancers Show Respect for Others by: • Keeping their hands to themselves during class. • Waiting quietly for others to have a turn and for instructions from the teacher. • Waiting until the music is finished before entering the classroom if they are

late to class. • Talking with one another only during share time. • Supporting other students’ efforts and never laughing, pointing, whispering or gossiping.

Parents Show Respect for the Dance Class, Teachers, and Studio by: • Coming inside the waiting room to drop off and pick up dancers. It

is unsafe to allow children to walk outside alone. • Bringing dancers to class on time and picking them up promptly after class. • Having students ready for class before they enter the classroom. • Making certain the dancer has used the restroom before entering class. • Clearly marking the child’s items with his/her name before leaving home. • Never leaving siblings in the waiting room unattended. • Knocking before entering the classroom if a class is in progress. • Making every effort to stand away from the viewing window if it becomes obvious that the students are being distracted. • Not letting children stand and hit the viewing windows or doors. • Never allowing children to hit the glass windows or mirrors. • Letting us know in advance if a student will be absent and making arrangements to schedule a make-up class. • Teaching dancers, and siblings, to sit quietly and read while waiting, remembering that our studio is close to the waiting room and dancers can hear excessive noise. • Teaching children to never run or scream in the studio, waiting room, or parking lot. • Reading the welcome packet, e-news, and bulletin boards. • Calling Miss Emily during office hours to discuss any concerns. • Always remembering Rockland School of Ballet is a gossip free environment, and talking negatively about others is an inappropriate behavior and benefits no one.

Frog Princess Awards Saturday, May 28, 2016

The Story Behind The Bears Classes Resume The spring recital is fast approaching, Saturday, April 16, 2016 immediately following Rockland School of Ballet will follow the academic calendar and have a week of vacation before resuming regular classes until Saturday, May 28, 2016 for the Frog Princess Awards! We look forward to dancing with you through the end of the year!

Once upon a time long, long ago Miss Jessica came home to Maine for a visit and brought a present for Miss Emily. As Miss Emily excitedly unwrapped her present she discovered a beautiful stuffed bear, dressed in ballet clothes. She decided that she would bring the bear into the studio, name her Miss Jessica and have her watch classes all of the time. Just last year one of Miss Emily’s students came in and brought her a gift, an identical bear! Miss Emily dubbed this bear to be “Miss Emily” and set her on on the shelf next to Miss Jessica and there they sit watching over the studio all the time. And thus when you read your newsletter, you will find the two bears telling you what’s up from the studio, it’s actually a note from Miss Emily and Miss Jessica!

Rockland School of Ballet The Contemporary Movement

Nothing is More Revealing Than

MOVEMENT Rockland School of Ballet’s Contemporary Movement is a company division and was created with a vision of providing the midcoast Maine dance community space to come together and dance without judgement and reservation. Contemporary Movement provides dancers with a place to explore their passion, develop technique, and assimilate creativity. Each month dancers enter the studio and begin by discussing a current social issue. After gaining an understanding of the topic at hand, dancers learn a choreographed piece internalizing the movement, making it their own and sharing their story through dance. Contemporary Movement at Rockland School of Ballet offers students a safe, nurturing environment to hone their craft while continuing to develop their technique. In addition to regular classes and rehearsals, students are brought into the community to lead by example, telling stories and sharing experiences through the art of dance. Contact Rockland School of Ballet today to learn more about becoming part of the Contemporary Movement.
