STUDIO NOTE

‘Miss Emily Bear’ & ’Miss Jessica Bear’

Rockland School of Ballet a note from the school Dear Students and Families,

Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 16, 2016 1:30pm at the Strom Auditorium in Rockport! Rockland School of Ballet is preparing, yet again for another fabulous Spring Recital. Dancers are already in preparations and working hard to make their performance the best one yet. It is sure to be another exciting show! Classes will resume after the April vacation and we’ll look forward to seeing everyone back in the studio as we prepare for our final event of the season.

In addition to marking your calendars for the spring recital please be sure to add the Frog Princess Awards on May 28th. A non-competitive small dance recital that allows each level to share what they have learned over the past year, demonstrate new skills and graduate to a new level. Read inside for more information! As always thank you all for your hard work and participation keep dancing!

A Note From The Directress Spring Recital Free to Patrons In an effort to make this spring’s show free to patrons, we will be trying out the “non-rental paying category.” The Strom performance SPACE will be free to us, BUT there will still be expenses. In my emails with the Camden Hills Administration this is what I learned about the “Non Rental Paying Category”

Miss Emily: “In planning the spring recital, I am wondering about how the "Non Rental Paying Category" works. If I do not charge for the recital, does this mean that the use of the auditorium is free, or are there costs involved?”

CHRHS Administration: “You are correct that if you do not charge an entry fee to your event, you do not pay rental fees for the auditorium. You are still liable for all tech worker, house manager, equipment rental, custodial and other charges.” These fees, tech, manager, equipment, custodial, etc… cost us about $800.00+ for The Snow Queen, a little bit less than half of the total cost of the production space – performance plus fees. This means that we will still have to charge a recital fee. But, since the fees will be less, we can pass the savings on to you. Therefore the recital fee will be reduced from $45.00 to $30.00 per family. Hopefully this will cover the expense. Thank you for your understanding, Miss Emily

Monthly Objective

Expressing Emotions Through Movement By expressing emotions through movement dancers are able to tell a story without using words. Usually in class, dancers should have a genuine smile or pleasant expression on their faces, but dancers also should be able to express a broad range of emotions with their faces and through their bodies. Since dance is a theatrical art form, telling a story through movement and music and learning to express the necessary emotion is often critical to the telling of a story.. Some of the different emotions dancers can portray with their bodies and faces are: -Happy -Sad -Mad -Angry -Excited 7

Rockland School of Ballet’s Frog Princess Awards An Annual End of Year Ceremony and Celebration Every dancer enjoys the thrill of praise; the pride in achievement. Every dancer’s response to the Frog Princess Awards will be positive, immediate, and tangible. Every dancer is acknowledged - from the exceptional to the average - all seek recognition for their endeavors. Parents have the opportunity to see their children dance on their own, in an environment that is not competitive. Dancers maintain interest and enthusiasm over a period of years as they progress from level to level.

The Frog Princess Awards is a ready-made program of choreography that sets attainable goals for achievement. The Frog Princess Awards are a series of age- and level-appropriate distinctive choreographic compositions that students perform before an audience of parents and friends.

A most important aspect of the Frog Princess Awards is that they are NOT competitive - each student receives a medal, and a certificate. The Frog Princess Awards are a stress-free, enjoyable experience for teachers, dancers, and parents alike.

The fee is modest.

No heavy outlay for costumes: the dancers perform in their leotards. The entire learning process of the variations and the actual performance are a joyous experience for dancers.

Please mark your calendar! This year’s Frog Princess Awards will be Saturday, May 28, 2016

Rockland School of Ballet The Contemporary Movement: Summer 2016

Workshop: Labels July 5 - 8, 2016

3:00 - 7:00pm

Societies, cultures, communities, businesses, and individuals have become proficient at labeling everything and everyone. From skin color to sexual orientation, successes to failures, pricing structures to baby names, there isn’t anything around us lacking a definition or label.

Workshop: The Promise to Believe in Yourself July 18 - 22, 2016

2:00 - 6:00pm

Believe in yourself, make a pledge to accept and love who you are. Explore the nagging insecurities imposed on individuals by society that hold us back, create barriers and prevent us from reaching our full potential.

Join us as we explore how our society is affected by these labels, the toll it is taking on us, and what we can do to overcome the negative impacts of labeling.

Through discussion and dance, discover what it means to take a stand, break down personal barriers, and move forward while understanding how much potential exists in each one of us.

Process: • Move and warm-up through the art of Contemporary Dance • Explore and discuss; through group exercises, videos, team building, and more we will explore the real meaning of the word “Label” • Learn a choreographed dance to accompany discussions and workshop topic • Go on location and film the choreographed piece • Edit the piece together turning it into a short film and splash it back across social media
