Vast Variety

The February issue of Digital Output always highlights the winners of our annual Readers’ Choice Top 50 awards. Our readership—through inquiries via the web and print magazine—is pivotal in determining the top 50 companies and ten honorable mentions that you can read more about in Casting Call for Excellence.

Its a wonderful illustration of Digital Output readers’ vast interests and perhaps more importantly the variety that can be found throughout the graphic arts.

The 2025 winners represent all facets of the industry—from pressure-sensitive adhesive graphic film manufacturers to trade-only wholesale printers. It’s a wonderful illustration of Digital Output readers’ vast interests and perhaps more importantly the variety that can be found throughout the graphic arts.

Of course, our monthly coverage is full of variety. For example, this issue not only honors the Readers’ Choice winners but also looks at fabric, magnets, and rigid substrates.

With fabric offering a higher perceived value compared to other substrates, silicone edge graphics (SEG) provide the perfect mix of functionality and a visually appealing aesthetic. Spotlight on SEG discusses fabrics and frames, as well as how dye-sublimation printing is advantageous for this application.

The Next Attraction profiles magnetic signage, looking at the trends and new products that continue to make magnetic substrates beneficial to print providers. Complementing this piece, we spotlight a customer of Newlife Magnetics LLC—Switch-It Frames—and how the company succeeds with magnetic signage work. This issue also includes a resource chart on rigid substrate suppliers.

Congrats to the Top 50 Winners,

A Turbo Switch for Business Total Transformation with Huge Processing Gains

Work House Signs, a Pottstown, PA-based online signage printer and seller, has over 500,000 designs for sale on ive platforms—Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Walmart, and its own website. With a staff of eight, it creates thousands of signs every week. But there were major challenges. “Designing, printing, and cutting them in house was a very manual, time-consuming process,” recalls Rob Cole, president/owner, Work House Signs. “We had great success, but to continue growing we needed to post as many product listings as possible online, which we were also doing in a manual, time-consuming way.”

Ultimately the company couldn’t list any more products because staff were spending all its time managing incoming orders manually. “We hit a wall because we couldn’t increase sales. We needed to ind solutions to eliminate those costly hours that were being spent on getting products already sold to production, then out the door,” says Cole.” So, in February 2024, he contacted Signiicans Automation for an assessment.

Led by Sean Davis, VP of technology, Signiicans, a combination of Enfocus Switch, PitStop, and Phoenix software were deployed to integrate with the company’s various online orders, which were delivered using ShipStation software. The objective was to signiicantly reduce human touchpoints and repetitive tasks. The Enfocus Switch application, Fuzzy Matcher, created by Signiicans was also deployed. This artiicial intelligence technology identiies similar but not identical elements in large sets of data. In this case, it drastically reduced the time required to search the over 500,000 sign options available on Work House Signs’ ive online platforms.

Quick Processing and Constant Monitoring

“The new, customized software setup ultimately led to freeing up labor, so we could focus on growing the business rather than maintaining it,” says Cole. “The new software can even create images. It took us three to four years to get to 100,000 listings. With the new technology, for example, we recently created 38,000 signs in just one evening. That would have previously

taken us about four months. This, I believe, will eventually allow us to boost our sales tenfold.” In other words, 3,024 hours—18 weeks—of job processing was reduced to just six hours.

“The highly customized software we deployed is checking for new orders awaiting shipment every ive minutes,” reveals Davis. “Plus, when those orders arrive, there could be multiple items within one order to process. So, we could be processing literally hundreds of orders and combinations per day.”

“Midway through the project we were trending to 24 hours of weekly return on investment (ROI) recovery,” shares Marc Raad, president, Signiicans. “At every stage of a project, our team usually offers the client a new, automated development process to implement. This allows customers like Work House Signs to embrace more automation initiatives with quick wins. Today, the ROI is 68 hours of total labor recovery per week—that’s an awesome leap.” Within weeks, Work House Signs maximized on the intended software automation investment. The early deployment of customized solutions provided immediate gains, allowing the company to catapult its growth from the outset.

For more information on Work House Signs visit them at sofarack.com or Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and Walmart. For an assessment of your worklow software systems call Signiicans at 877-463-4465 or visit signiicans.com. D

Le ) Prior to Significans stepping in and revamping its workflow, sta ers at Work House Signs would have to sort through thousands of templates when an order arrived and scroll through a massive list of files to find where a specific template is located. Now, in less than five seconds, the so ware automatically searches those thousands of files, finds an approximate match, pulls that template, and then pushes it forward to production within the re-configured workflow. Plus, the new solution checks incoming orders every five minutes.

The Pull of Magnets

Quick Graphics Build a Business Model

Magnetic signage is useful for promotional reasons, but it’s also fun to work with the medium as a design aesthetic. Depending on the combination of material, ink, and printer, the final product is visually pleasing. Realizing the power of magnetic signage is what Switch It Magnetic Frames LLC of UT built its business on. Today it continues to think up innovative ways to use digitally printed magnets.

Switching Up Businesses

In business since 2019, Switch It Magnetic Frames employs three staff members and serves clients throughout the U.S. with printing, installation, graphic design, distribution, and training services. The idea for

the company originated from Auto Images USA, a separate entity that provides commercial stock automobile photos and celebrates nearly 30 years in business.

Jeff Hooker, owner, Auto Images USA/Switch It Magnetic Frames, realized that these same automobile clients were having difficulty personalizing their dealerships and offices with graphics. “They needed someone with industry knowledge to see how to best help them,” shares Hooker. And the idea for Switch It Magnetic Frames was born.

The print quality is the very best we have found. We tried other companies’ receptive media, but they were not nearly as good as Newlife Magnetics products.
— Jeff Hooker, owner, Auto Images USA/Switch It Magnetic Frames

Time to Learn New to the print market, Hooker familiarized himself with available options. Reaching out to a distributor, he explained that

he was looking for a product that would help clients replace images easily and the representative suggested magnetic options, more specifically products from Newlife Magnetics LLC.

Working with the team at Newlife Magnetics, they ultimately decided on the company’s Platinum ST540 magnetic-receptive print media. “The print quality is the very best we have found. We tried other companies’ receptive media, but they were not nearly as good as Newlife Magnetics products,” notes Hooker.

Standout features of the Platinum ST540 include the white point, which allows for high-quality print results. Also, the PET print surface is more durable and ecofriendly than competitors’ PVC options, according to Hooker.

The total product thickness is 12 mil, another selling point for Switch It Magnetic Frames. “It allows the print to float over the magnetic frames we have manufactured with Newlife Magnetics,” says Hooker.

The Switch It Magnetic Frame model involves a face composed of high-energy magnet, which then allows for easy installation of ferrous receptive print media. The printed media grips to the magnet frame. Up to three layers can be added at a time or switched out to fit client needs. The base magnet is available in five sizes—24x24, 18x18, 12x12, 18x12, and 8x8 inches.

“We love the ability to layer multiple prints on the magnet

frames. This allows the customer to easily rotate prints as needed and store them on the same magnet frame, or to add additional temporary graphics over a print,” continues Hooker.

Switch It Magnetic Frames also uses Newlife Magnetics’ high gloss, dry erase magnet-receptive product—part of the GRWT series. It is a 4-mil dry erase PET film laminated to magnet-receptive sheeting. This is used when clients want to write on the graphic. Hooker says isopropyl alcohol wipes permanent markers off of the dry erase product beautifully.

To print the graphics, Switch It Magnetic Frames employs a Roland DGA Corporation TrueVIS VG-640 eco-solvent printer. Any final pieces that require lamination rely on a 63-inch top heat laminator with swing out shafts, the 563TH-4RS from Graphic Finishing Partners, LLC.

Illustrative Success

Illustrating just how easy the Switch It Magnetic Frame system is, Hooker shared a recent job for client Quartermaster. The company hoped to make its rented space more inviting and positive for its employees so it turned to Switch It Magnetic Frames to outfit its office with 17 separate images totaling approximately 200 square feet.

Using Newlife Magnetics Platinum ST540 magnetic-receptive print media, the entire project was printed on the Roland TrueVIS VG-640 in three hours. The Switch It Magnetic Frames team installed the final product

for Quartermaster. The biggest obstacle was determining how to hang the magnet bases, since the client was concerned about damaging the walls. In the end, 3M command strips were placed on the back of the frames to make removal damage free.

The final reveal was exciting for the Quartermaster employees. “Employees stood around and watched and waited for their print to be unrolled over the magnetic frames. They felt connected to their office space in a personal way that made it more enjoyable to come to work. They loved the idea that the prints can be switched out whenever they want a change,” shares Hooker.

Even the owner of Quartermaster appreciated the change, so much

so he placed several systems in his own personal office.

“He did not like going into work because he did not like his office. The photos of his own family made all the difference. He traveled to 15 countries. The photos of his travels as well as his wife and grandchildren brought his space to life,” adds Hooker.

Magnetic Partners

Working with Newlife Magnetics to promote the Switch It Magnetic Frame system, Hooker is invested in growing the company one magnetic sign at a time. The product is already proving its advantages in current installs and further projects will only cement its success. D

ombining magnetic media with pressure-sensitive vinyl, banner material, rigid substrates, and fabric—it completes the list for a print provider striving to become a one-stop shop.

Like any substrate it has its challenges, but strides continue in developing magnetic signage options that work with today’s wide format—and even narrow format—printers.

If you aren’t printing to magnetic media yet, we hope this article makes you take a second look.

Top Spot

Digitally printed magnets used in signage are seen in a number of environments and applications. According to Brian Ebenger, VP of business development, XCEL, top applications include indoor/outdoor signage, retail graphics, vehicle advertising, postcards, labels, business cards, and interior wall décor.

“Magnetics are used in business cards, postcards, and labels for the simplicity of reuse and durability. Magnetics in interior wall décor, vehicle advertising, and other signage is helpful for ease of install while also durability and a professional look,” he continues.

Large retailers enjoy using magnetic signage because of “its ease of installation and the ability to change and refresh graphics. It can be kitted and shipped to multiple locations, which allows the in-store staff to install the graphics and removes the need for a professional installer,” notes Matthew Adams, sales executive, North America, Newlife Magnetics, LLC.

Keeping It Up

Despite the variety of applications associated with magnetic signage, many print shops do not offer magnetic opportunities to their clientele.

While “print service providers (PSPs) are familiar with the car sign and business card type applications, fewer are familiar with the magnet base and magnetreceptive media system—the advantage of which is it brings customers back for more magnet receptive prints,” admits Adams.

For some PSPs not using magnetic sheets may be because they don’t own the proper printing devices.

“Magnet is heavy to handle and thicker than most media, which makes this more difficult to run

through some equipment,” explains Ebenger.

Adding to this, rolls are generally shorter due to the heaviness of the material.

“This impacts the amount of time to load and equipment downtime. Additionally, due to thicker composition, magnetic will be more rigid,” continues Ebenger when sharing more reasons why PSPs are averse to this material.

In response, vendors have started to craft materials optimized for specific printers. For example, Magnum Magnetics Corporation took its popular DigiMaxx product and tailored it for Canon U.S.A., Inc. Colorado series printers equipped with a magnetic media kit. DigiMaxx Colorado wide format magnetic sheets are available in rolls of 40- or 48-inch widths and 40-foot lengths. The materials are designed to leverage Canon’s UVgel inks to ensure graphics deliver color accuracy and durability. The best part—although the material is optimized for Canon Colorado series printers—DigiMaxx Colorado is also compatible with eco-solvent, solvent, latex, and UV inkjet printers.

“Many print providers think it is difficult to print directly to

magnet, but with today’s devices it is super easy, whether you are printing small format or wide format Newlife Magnetics has a variety of media options. This allows print shops to tap into a great new revenue stream,” suggests Adams.

Ebenger agrees that those interested in magnetic signage shouldn’t be deterred. “This can be an additional revenue stream for the printer and can often be sold to current clientele that are likely to buy elsewhere or may not know

magnetic media is an option. Additionally, it can likely be printed/ cut on the existing equipment so there is no need for additional costs to enter this area.”

Trending Topics

Within the last few years topics surrounding digitally printable magnetic signage included thinner gauge materials and sustainability/recyclability.

Still top of mind in the manufacturing arena, many vendors offer thinner gauge materials, which

addresses the aforementioned concern of thicker media running through a printer. “Thinner gauge magnets help give options to printers that have equipment that cannot fit the traditional 0.030,” explains Ebenger.

Sustainable materials are relevant and many products are easily recycled. XCEL offers recyclable magnetic media. The company also works with its customers and offers to build recycling programs when there is a need or interest.

Newlife Magnetics is an industry leader in sustainability. Most of its media is PVC free and the company’s magnetreceptive media contains 32.4

percent post-consumer recycled content. Environmental certifications are available for the products, like its magnetreceptive print media Platinum ST540. The 8-mil matte white PET print surface is coated for a total thickness of 12 mil. The high-density ferrous coating contains a lot of metal but is super smooth to prevent marring when it is rolled up on itself in a shipping tube. Platinum ST540 is recyclable for waste to energy.

Adams Magnetic Products also offers sustainable benefits. According to a recent blog post, the company’s flexible magnet sheet is made from 75 percent recyclable materials, which are 100 percent pre-consumer

product. Some versions of printable—coated, not laminated—magnet sheet are actually 100 percent recyclable and can be added back into the manufacturing process to make more magnet sheet. This includes its GreenMAG printable magnet sheet, which is coated instead of laminated.

Beyond environmental concerns and thinner materials, Adams says another trending topic involves smaller format media. Newlife Magnetics, for example, expanded beyond wide format, into the small format digital market with its PressMag line of pre-magnetized magnet sheets that allow HP Indigo, dry toner, and UV offset customers to

print directly to magnet without having to magnetize post-print. The PressMag line is stocked in most standard sheet sizes. “This makes printing magnet on those presses much more efficient,” explains Adams.

Identifying the Best

Magnetic-based media is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It's best to consider the current printing presses in house, as well as ink sets, before determining the type of substrates to offer to clientele. However, once this is decided upon, the benefits of the service and educating customers on the advantages comes easily. Some of the top trends to watch for include thinner gauge materials and sustainability/recyclability. D

ilicone edge graphics (SEG) are typically printed to textile-based media. They are made up of three components—frame extrusions, which are generally aluminum; corner keys and splices; and a graphic with silicone beading. These reusable solutions require knowledge of the printing processes, media options, and framing solutions available to ensure success.

Michael Litardo, marketing manager, Mutoh Americas, Inc., explains that SEG signage can be

temporarily removed, cleaned, and remounted in the frames as needed.

“Soft signage remains the primary application for SEG panels and continues to show year-to-year growth in overall demand and functionality. Many end users appreciate SEG’s ease of installation and handling, and shipping costs are significantly less with no damage caused by delivery,” shares Timothy

Above) Sublimation transfer technology, like that from Mimaki, delivers vibrant results for backlit applications.

Mitchell, senior manager, customer experience, Mimaki USA, Inc.

Mike Syverson, textile manager - North America, Durst Image Technology, adds that fabric, which is common in SEG, has a higher perceived value compared to other substrates.

“SEG frames can ship unassembled, meaning a small box can deliver a large graphic impact,” adds Jeffrey Rubin, president, Testrite Visual Products.

Dye-Sub for SEG

Fabrics are compatible with several print processes, including dye-sublimation (dye-sub)—

transfer and direct; and direct printing. For this article we focus on dye-sub printing for SEG.

Dye-sub printing goes hand in hand with SEG. “With dye-sub, the image not only looks fantastic, but it actually becomes part of the fabric itself. This is in contrast to UV or latex printing where the graphic sits on the surface. The image embedded in the fabric means the graphic can be folded to fit inside of the same box as the frame without risk of the image tracking or the surface otherwise being damaged,” explains Rubin.

“The dye-sub process bonds ink directly into the fibers of polyester-based fabrics, making it ideal for SEG applications where deep

color saturation, vivid details, and wrinkle resistance are crucial. Additionally, dye-sub printing creates a soft, lightweight finish that enhances the aesthetic appeal and user experience of SEG displays,” seconds Greg Lamb, CEO, Global Imaging, Inc.

“Dye-sub offers a continuous tone,” offers Nick Dinunzio, director of business development, Alpina Manufacturing, LLC. “With this printing method each dot of ink can be a different color, allowing for high-resolution images and incredible color fidelity.”

According to Ken Bach, business development director, Aberdeen Fabrics, Inc., dye-sub printing allows for a seamless print on

fabric that complements an SEG’s sleek, edge-lit frame design.

Mitchell specifies that dye-sub transfer printing is the ideal choice for SEG applications, particularly for backlit panels. “The brightest colors are produced with sublimation transfer inks on polyester fabrics and dye-sub inks are available from some manufacturers in specialty colors such as fluorescents.”

While Danny Jimenez, sales consultant, print media sales, TVF, typically recommends dye-sub printing for SEG, he admits that deciding which process to use has to start with asking about the application. “Size and stretch are important to consider, as is resilience and how you intend to pack it. With any dye-sub compatible fabric, you’re playing a balancing act and everybody has different ideas about what works best for their needs.”

“Dye-sub’s versatility with fabrics, especially stretchable polyester, also provides a seamless fit for silicone edge frames, making it ideal for SEG applications,” says Maria Castricone, marketing and inside sales manager, Expolinc.

Jeff Mills, national product manager - TexStyles Graphic Fabrics, Beaver Paper & Graphic Media Inc., adds that dye-sub does not produce glare, so images are clear and vivid under different lighting conditions.

Steve LaMarsh, director of business development, Display Source Inc., feels the barriers to entry are gone when it comes to SEG.

1) Beaver Paper’s TexStyles Backlit 90 is a backlit fabric offering four-way stretch.

“Whether you do the work in house or outsource frames and fabric printing, every shop must offer this ever-growing product as part of their portfolio of large format products.”

Dye-sub is well suited for largevolume SEG orders, offering cost effectiveness while maintaining high-quality results, which is often important for applications that require scalability, shares Bach.

Lily Hunter, product manager, Professional Imaging, Epson America, Inc., notes that with dye-sub, if fabric gets dirty, it can be washed and wrinkles steamed out—benefits not possible with UV or other ink sets where the inks do not penetrate or dye the fabric.

Fabric manufacturers tailor their products to be compatible with dye-sub ink. “For example, there are different types of polyester fabrics intended to mimic the look and feel of materials such as cotton, nylon, and silk—natural fabrics that are incompatible with dye-sub ink. Now many print service providers have the option and opportunity to start opening businesses in markets they normally wouldn’t have before. Polyester fabrics have become good at mimicking natural fibers and imparting a premium impression in almost any space,” comments Mitchell.

In preproduction, Mitchell points out that many substrates require special inks to print on them and in many cases pre- or postprocessing such as steaming and washing. “New advances in printing technology such as the Mimaki TRAPIS system enable

customers to use sublimationpigmented transfer inks for use on a wider range of fabrics including natural fibers without the need for pre- or post-treatment—just a quick two-step print and transfer with a calendar press. This greatly increases the range of product offerings while reducing the need for complicated fabric treatments, which can have a steep learning curve and use a large amount of water. It also reduces the customer’s investment in both capital equipment and time.”

On the post-use side, Mimaki offered a technology preview in 2023 of the Neo-Chromato process for the re-use of printed sublimation transfer fabric. It is a post-use technology that extracts dyes so polyester textiles can be reused up to 20 times, with minimal impact on the environment. “The Neo-Chromato process supports sustainability and circularity in textile printing via a ‘reverse’ process using a heat press along with proprietary fluid to remove dyes from the fabric. The result is a reduction of used goods in landfills,” explains Mitchell.

Trends in SEG

SEG displays offer several benefits, including high-impact imagery that can be backlit, ease of use and reuse, and cost-effective transportation. Coupled with the right printing processes and fabric selection, SEG is durable and versatile.

Backlit/Blockout

Adding to a vibrant print, backlit SEGs are popular. “The ability to illuminate the fabric creates a

dynamic, eye-catching effect, increasing engagement,” says Bach.

Black-back fabric is also trending, according to Jimenez. “In the past, it was mostly used as a cover up fabric, but as manufacturers and printers discover how boldly it can be printed and how many varieties we offer, the more they’re keeping it around for multiple uses.”

Two of the largest products in SEG are blockout fabrics and backlit fabrics. “Blockout fabrics, such as black-back polyester, allow end users to install a graphic without a diffuser layer in the frame so you cannot see the internal frame structure. Backlit graphics are increasing in use as well. There have been many advances in fabric construction, which has improved the overall quality of backlit fabric in terms of look and feel in addition to handling,” explains Syverson.

New Spaces

Ever versatile, SEG pops up in a variety of spaces—new and old.

“They have taken over exhibitions and retail. SEG offers a range of applications beyond these sectors, which are gaining in traction and include corporate environments, interiors, hospitality, museums and galleries, sports arenas, and transportation hubs,” says Joel Willcock, director, UFabrik.

Hunter anticipates more SEG trends driven by the efficiency and reusability the displays offer across various industries. “Beyond retail, I expect to see growth in hospitality applications, as it allows for customized artwork that can match a current décor style or season that is cost efficient, can be easily installed, then cleaned, stored, and reused. It is also great for restaurants or hallways as some fabric can help to naturally dampen sound, serving as both an aesthetically pleasing and functional piece.”

Hunter also expects growth of SEG in theater applications. “Fabric backdrops are ideal for the theater industry, offering stress-free transportability and washability. These backdrops can easily be washed between shows, reused multiple times, and travel with a production if need be.”

Another industry where Hunter sees opportunity for SEG is indoor gaming, including paintball arenas and bowling alleys. “With the use of florescent ink, the SEG can be illuminated in the dark with a black light. They are much easier to replace than painted panels, and can be conveniently washed, stored, and brought back

year after year, making them a practical, long-term solution.”

Mitchell points to increased use of SEG for both walls and ceilings, enabling more interchangeability than fixed murals and décor. “Expect to see SEG fabric in natural fibers and in highly decorative display frames. SEG is going to continue to enter the décor market in a big way.”

Dinunzio has witnessed more double-sided hanging SEG

frames and graphics in grocery stores/supermarkets.

Hunter states that although SEG is mainly associated with retail signage applications, it can be used in other markets due to its ease of use, simple installation, and reusability. “SEG frames are becoming very low profile and less obvious, further expanding market interest and adoption in areas like hospitality, theater, and airports. They can also be used to decorate hallways and lobbies of any office.”

Lamb says customization is another trend, with businesses seeking displays with unique finishes and color tones to differentiate their displays and enhance brand identity.

“Five-meter printing is gaining traction here in the U.S. as more brands want to go bigger and bigger with their displays, yet they desire a seamless, professional look. We anticipate an increase of installations of five-meter printers as printing companies outgrow their current three-meter models,” states Lamb.

Sustainability

Castricone sees continued focus on sustainability, with recyclable fabrics and eco-friendly dyes gaining popularity.

“Customers look for eco-friendly options that don’t compromise on quality or visual impact, making dye-sub a popular choice for its ability to produce stunning, longlasting graphics,” asserts Willcock. One example, music bands are increasingly looking for a clear specification of environmentally friendly materials for their display graphics, often with a detailed cradle-to-grave audit trail.

Mitchell also sees more awareness for sustainability programs in the digital textile production industry. “While there is no central program for bringing circularity to textile production, there are discrete programs that address some issues.”

As environmental concerns continue to shape consumer expectations, Lamb predicts demand for

2) The Epson SureColor F-Series dye-sub printers are well suited to SEG applications. 3) Expolinc’s Light Frame, Classic Frame, Light Frame Mini, Fold Out Counter, and Light Frame Counter are all designed with SEG in mind, offering diverse options to suit any display requirement.

recyclable and eco-conscious SEG materials will likely grow. “We have seen increased interest in programs to divert printed materials from the landfill to be reused or recycled. These programs are in their infancy but will undoubtedly become more important as end users demand more environmentally responsible products and production methods,” says Lamb.

Sustainability goes beyond recycling. Mills notes that fabrics coated with acrylic coatings are not sustainable for the environment. “This is the reason we have stayed away from these fabrics. Our approach to the soft signage market is to design a line of fabrics made with CiCLO technology. This technology allows fabric to biodegrade at the same rate as wool instead of the hundred years standard or recycled polyester fabric takes when placed in a landfill. This line of fabrics we are developing is called TexStyles NatureSeries.”

Mitchell feels that most fabrics used for SEG are very good for sustainability and many are constructed from post-consumer waste. “All of Mimaki’s fabric manufacturing partners are heavily invested in making their portfolio as sustainable, recyclable, and environmentally friendly as possible. The ‘green’ investment in fabric printing is real and very appealing to buyers and consumers alike.”

As the push for reusability and sustainability increases, Litardo says SEG use will increase accordingly. “I believe it will completely take over retail in places where digital is too expensive or not practical.”

Another trend appearing is the migration towards silicon-based keder and away from PVC and PVC composites, “which are not only inferior in performance but environmentally detrimental. Where PVC keder can be rigid and inflexible, silicon keder is smooth, strong, and flexible, able to handle high production volumes with ease,” says Willcock.

Automation

As with any segment of manufacturing, automation is increasingly essential to profitability.

Automation is playing an increasingly important role in the workflow of dye-sub printing and SEG production. “From RIPs and other prepress software that automates file preparation, to smart features on printers and cutters, and finally, automated finishing systems, there are ways to streamline each step of SEG

production. Automation helps businesses enhance efficiency, reduce manual labor, and maintain consistency, allowing them to keep pace with the growing demand for SEG displays,” explains Lamb.

“Most markets still see tight labor markets and the risks associated with variability of skills in various departments of their shop,” says LaMarsh. Therefore print providers must work to improve productivity and reduce bottlenecks due to labor/skill shortages to allow for the expansion of product lines in spite of floorspace constraints.

Automation of the finishing department will help deskill the sewing work area where possible. “Printers have invested significantly in upstream equipment to increase output with printers, newer media materials, etc. Now is the time to upgrade

the equipment in the finishing department. Many shops have a least one utility staff position. This team member is well suited to move into SEG finishing to handle the surges of business that come with large campaigns, big events, or store rollouts. The search for skilled stitchers to sew SEG is over,” suggests LaMarsh.

FASTSEWN and its moving cavity technology is one example of this. The system utilizes a conveyorized flatbed combined with a specialized vacuum holddown system. There is a series of pulleys and rollers that create a movable cavity in the flatbed surface. This movable cavity allows access to the underside of the textiles. This is achieved without strapping the fabric into frames, which almost eliminates any manual handling. So the entire process consists of automated loading of the fabric, automated cutting and sewing,

and automated off-loading of the finished goods.

Automation technology also sets the stage for personalization. ”The demand for highly

customizable SEG displays will rise, especially in retail and brand experiences. Technology that allows for easy design changes and personalized graphics will be a key driver,” predicts Bach.

Beyond automation, simply removing sewing from the process is an option. For example, companies like Banner Ups from Budnick Converting, Inc. offer products like KederTape LITE. The tape is coated with a unique adhesive that sticks to fabric. This removes the barrier to entry for those print providers looking to adopt SEG into their workshop but do not have sewing capabilities.

Digital Integration

Another interesting trend is integration with digital displays. “Hybrid displays that combine SEG graphics with digital screens are becoming more popular, offering a dynamic, multi-dimensional experience for customers and audiences,” offers Bach.

Lamb also predicts that integrating digital screens and interactive elements into SEG displays will become more common in the near future as brands seek ways to create more immersive experiences.

Castricone predicts demand for integrated smart technology, such as interactive displays, and more modular solutions that adapt to different event needs. “SEG’s adaptability for various setups will continue to drive its popularity.”

“The integration of SEG fabric with digital displays, augmented reality, and other interactive elements will continue to grow. As technology evolves, we could see more dynamic, multi-sensory experiences created with SEG systems,” offers Bach.

Growth in SEG

SEG offers advantages including versatility, reusability, durability, impact, and sustainability.

“Having the ability to install a frame once and supply new graphics to a client simplifies the process, especially with the client being able to install the graphics themselves versus hiring an installation company,” offers Syverson.

The attractiveness of SEG is moving beyond retail signage applications due to its ease of use, simple installation, and reusability. “SEG frames are becoming very low profile and less obvious, further expanding market interest in adoption in areas like hospitality, theater, and airports. They can also decorate the halls and lobbies of any office,” concludes Hunter.

Print providers often utilize dyesub printing processes to provide washability, vibrancy, and soft hand for this common application.
