Multi-Media Graphics Tell a Story

TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition

We live in a world that relies heavily on digital videos and projections, or even tricks of light. However, the power of print is still integral to messaging. This pertains to traditional promotional marketing yes, but even art or exhibitions meant for entertainment or experience leverage print. Large format graphics convey messaging in meaningful ways. Combined with digital signage, the multi-media experience is powerful.

World-Class Exhibition

A tangible example of this is TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition. E/M Group, based out of Peachtree Corners, GA, is an expert at creating world-class exhibitions that utilize themed settings, theatrical innovations, and state-ofthe-art media. The company curates two permanent Titanic-themed

exhibitions in Las Vegas, NV and Orlando, FL as well as five touring exhibitions.

One of the tours made its way to Boston, MA in November 2024. Held at The Saunders Castle at Park Plaza, the 15,000 square foot exhibition features replica interior rooms of the RMS Titanic, a full-scale renovation of the Grand Staircase, artifacts recovered from the site in the North Atlantic, and quotes from passengers and crew.

We look for durability as far as the graphic being able to hold up during the length of the install.

E/M Group’s affiliate RMS Titanic, Inc. (RMST) serves as the exclusive steward of the RMS Titanic. Dedicated to preserving the legacy of the ship, wreckage site, and passengers and crew, RMST has conduced eight research expeditions since 1987, recovering more than 5,500 artifacts, which are part of the TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition.

To complement the physical objects, accurate, clear photography is key to a successful historical exhibit. “Most of the images we have are low resolution, B&W or sepia, but we use technology to get them up to par. We talk with the printer and let them know our specifications whether its 100 or 300 dpi depending on the final size of the print,” explains Andrew Agyemang, print production coordinator, E/M Group.

Cut vinyl is used throughout the exhibit site. Direct quotes from various passengers as well as notable crew members like Captain Edward J. Smith are found.

might need it translated, so we work with third parties to make sure it is translated correctly and maintains its integrity,” shares Tomasina Ray, director of collections, E/M Group/president, RMS Titanic, Inc.

Agyemang works directly with the print service provider (PSP) responsible for the majority of the digitally printed graphics and cut vinyl seen throughout the inside of the exhibition.

Parallax Digital Studios of Kennesaw, GA has been the PSP of choice for TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition since 2016.

Graphics are printed in the GA facility using EFI VUTEk h5 UV LED hybrid printers and then shipped to the various exhibit locations. According to Lee Clevenger, VP of operations, Parallax Digital, the EFI VUTEk h5 devices are ideal for jobs like this because of their reliability. Capable of handling multiple types of substrates, the output yielded is visually consistent whether it is flexible or rigid.

A traveling exhibition, the graphics need to withstand bumps and dings when shipped and handled between each location. “We look for durability as far as the graphic being able to hold up during the length of the install. Durability is important for traveling to the next location as well,” notes Agyemang.

Parallax Digital prints directly to KömaTex free-foam PVC sheets from Kömmerling. The media is not laminated, thanks to the EFI UltraClear Coat available

on the EFI VUTEk h5 printer. Used for decorative applications as well as for a final protective coating, it prints inline, simultaneously with the image.

The final printed products are simple to wipe down in the field where attendees may touch the graphics when on display.

Replacing a graphic ruined during transport needs to be straightforward. “Because the exhibition is so plug and play, it’s easy to find consistency across the various materials, so if something becomes damaged we can find a replacement easily and reprint,” explains Ray.

When this happens, Agyemang and his team reach out to a PSP local to the exhibit location to re-do the graphic. In this instance, sometimes other rigid substrate materials are used like 3A Composites USA’s expanded PVC SINTRA board. Exterior graphics promoting the exhibition, like pole banners and flags, are usually created by local PSPs as well.

Bringing it All Together

E/M Group leverages large format graphics in meaningful ways, but it also complements static signage with digital to create a powerful multi-media experience. “We started to bring in video elements and projectors that add a

little more color, but we want the photographs to remain true to the time period,” admits Ray.

The lighting crew focuses on illuminating each graphic so the final result is like a light box. “It makes them come off the walls.

The walls disappear and the graphics really pop out,” continues Ray.

Speaking of the crew, setup takes a good amount of time. The Boston, MA location was a two week process that included hanging lighting, installing walls, putting down flooring, setting display cases and placing the artifacts in them, and then adding the graphics to the walls. Graphics are installed to walls using velcro, which allows for ease of removal.

While large format print is pivotal in an exhibition space, smaller format graphics also play a role. At TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition they are used in a uniquely personal way. When attendees enter the exhibition space, they are presented with a 4x6-inch boarding pass. The front includes information about the White Star Line’s RMS Titanic, and the back presents a passenger biography.

distributed per visiting time slot, 80 female and 80 male. “It gives a first person perspective of being on the RMS Titanic. You can identify a little closer with some of the objects,” explains Ray.

Quality and Durability

MDJ & Associates of IL produces all of the boarding passes for the U.S. exhibitions. 160 cards are

At the end of the exhibit, visitors can scan their boarding pass to find out if the passenger survived or perished. In the same room, a 100x96-inch digitally printed memorial wall lists the names of each deceased passenger, divided by first, second, and third class, as well as crew members.

E/M Group has decades of experience in creating powerful, multimedia exhibitions. Partnering with companies like Parallax Digital ensures the graphics’ quality respects the topic matter and signage remains intact. Ray hopes visitors “walk away and need a moment to digest it, but hopefully it triggers more questions.” TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition in Boston, MA is open until the first weekend of February 2025. Window Graphics for Cold Weather Performance

indow graphics are an excellent solution for marketing messages as well as improving the functionality of a space by providing UV resistance, reducing solar glare, controlling temperatures, and offering privacy. However, these graphics must also contend with natural elements, like excessive hot and cold air.

Specialty window media options are designed to work well in cold weather climates. The performance of low-temperature window media and films relies on the product maintaining flexibility

Above) Drytac offers several cold weather compatible materials for all types of applications including windows, walls, and floors as well as other flat/ simple curve surfaces.

MACTAC INTRODUCES REBEL COLD TEMP GRAPHIC PRINT MEDIA FOR LOW TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS

Mactac Graphic & Signage Solutions launches a new line of Rebel Cold Temp graphic print media.

Adding to the customer-favorite Rebel Multi-Print Media product line, Rebel Cold Temp features the latest in Mactac cold temperature innovation. A specially formulated high-tack pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) that is designed for high performance in low-temperature applications, customers can meet their marketing, advertising, and signage needs—even in cold weather.

“Rebel Cold Temp allows outdoor applications in the winter when low temperatures prevent normal adhesives from wetting out,” says Nate Goodman, technical product manager, Mactac Graphic & Signage Solutions. “These products can be

where others might crack and adhesives that hold a level of tack and resist the tendency to turn into solids so they can grip and hold onto surfaces, explains Jay Kroll, product manager for cut, transit, and wall solutions, General Formulations.

Special Formulations

Cold weather window media is comprised of specially formulated adhesives that remain effective at lower temperatures and are often more durable to withstand temperature changes and harsh weather conditions, shares Aarona Tesch, product marketing manager, GBC, part of ACCO Brands.

Tesch points out that SEAL’s Gudy window solution is suitable for climates as cold as five degrees Fahrenheit.

“For cold weather compatible window media, the adhesive technology is such that the activation

range is extended at both below and above the typical 50 to over 85 degrees Fahrenheit,” says Michelle Kempf, VP, sales and marketing, Continental Grafix USA, Inc.

These films can be installed in colder as well as warmer than average conditions. For example, Kempf says Continental Grafix’s panoRama Innova Ice and X-Treme use a higher tack adhesive than standard films, yet remain removable for up to six months without residue when removed at over 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, iTac Clear and iTac White feature very low tack adhesives and are cleanly removable for up to three years.

“Each adhesive is intentionally paired with durable, stable face films—high-quality polymeric PVC and polyester to ensure excellent dimensional stability and durability,” adds Kempf.

installed in temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit and will perform in below freezing temperatures.”

The Rebel Cold Temp adhesive was developed based on the properties and characteristics of the popular Mactac Rebel high-tack adhesive, which is known for its extreme bond, ultimate adhesion, and ability to stick to low-surface energy materials. It adheres to powder coated paints, low volatile organic compound wall paints, polyethylene, polypropylene, and difficult-to-stick surfaces.

Rebel Cold Temp is ideal for screen printed decals, markings, point of purchase displays, durable decals, and indoor or outdoor signage. It is available in a 3-mil gloss clear polymeric vinyl (RB599CT) or a 3.2-mil matte white polymeric vinyl (RB528CT). Both products are non-top coated, durable, and flexible. They are accompanied by a 90# polyethylene liner that is coated on both sides and provides excellent lay flat properties.

Rebel Cold Temp has an outdoor durability of up to five years, and an indoor durability up to seven years. It is offered in 150-foot long rolls with widths of 54 or 60 inches. Sample rolls are also available.

Drytac also uses specially formulated adhesives engineered to work in cold environments. “These adhesive solutions are utilized on our most popular materials when we know they will be installed outdoors,” comments Dennis Leblanc, senior business manager, North America, Drytac.

Certain cold weather window media solutions have insulating properties that help retain indoor heat and block outdoor cold, as well as provide UV resistance, offers Tesch.

“Materials at extreme cold temperatures react and change, but the trick is to slow or delay that change to allow them to still work in the application. Low-tack window films are not ideal for cold temperature installations as they are already so low that the reduction of tack combined with cold weather reduces it to nearly nothing,” adds Kroll.

Installation Considerations

It is important to note that just because a media is able to perform well in cold climates, it may not be recommended to install it in freezing temperatures.

For example, Lintec of America, Inc. offers laminates designed to protect its printed film for longterm outdoor durability. “We recommend installing the film with laminate on the exterior when the temperature is above 45 degrees Fahrenheit or not installing in freezing temperatures,” stresses John Coyne, sales manager, Lintec of America.

Coyne adds that Lintec’s polyesters “handle cold well once applied since they won’t crack in extreme cold like other films such as vinyl. This is why polyester is the preferred film for automotive window tints.”

Kroll suggests that the best environments for installing cold

weather window media are those that have a little bit of control over the conditions. “A lot of these graphics are used in retail or point of purchase, so storing the graphics inside the shop before installing instead of packing them in a cold service van or applying during the day when the sun is warming the windows are little things that can help mitigate the risks and create a higher probability of success.”

Kroll says it’s also worth noting that surface temperatures are not always in line with air temperature, whether hotter or colder, and the use of a portable temperature gun to double check can help bring some clarity and save headaches on the job site.

Removability Considerations

Removal of window graphics in cold environments can get tricky.

“Cold weather applications do require some additional application knowledge as materials can and will become brittle,” points out Leblanc.

In cold weather, Tesch admits that adhesives on window graphic media may become less pliable, making it harder to remove without leaving behind residue.

“If you’ve ever tried removing graphics in the cold, you’ll know that the films get brittle and the adhesive generally feels significantly more aggressive on the surface. As the adhesive cools or freezes it becomes a bit like a solid that is bonded with the substrate. Easy removal

might require a little heat, or it might require that you wait for a warmer day,” agrees Kroll.

Prior to application it is important for materials to remain room temperature and only be exposed to the cold when ready for application in order to keep the media and release liner pliable.

“Allowing them to freeze doesn’t effect the adhesive, however it can effect the ease of use of the product. As such, removing graphics follow the same science. Wait for a sunny day where the surface can be heated by the sun. This will allow for much easier removal,” suggests Leblanc.

Kempf points out that while some versatile cold weather films can be installed in low temperatures, it is not recommended to remove in temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Specialty Solutions

Window films designed to perform well in cold environments are considered specialty solutions and therefore may carry a higher price tag.

“This feature involves specialized materials and adhesives that perform well in low temperatures, which can add to the cost,” admits Tesch. “The price difference can vary depending on brand, quality, and specific features and can range anywhere from ten to 30 percent more expensive than general purpose window media.”

Kempf says panoRama Innova Ice and X-Treme are considered

specialty thanks to the hightack, yet removable adhesive setting them apart from general purpose film with comparable durability ratings. “These products come at a price premium of up to 25 percent in consideration of the extended temperature installation range,” offers Kempf, adding that iTac Clear and iTac White are both priced “very competitively to their counterparts in this space.”

When it comes to pricing for customers, Kroll believes the cost difference in these films is generally negligible, and in the case of General Formulations, they’re standard materials with the additional performance benefit. “Even if the film is another $0.10 to $0.20 per square feet, that is minimal on a typical

job that is paying $4 to $10 per square feet.”

Leblanc points out that while Drytac considers this a specialty feature, it does not charge any premiums for the science. “Our clients trust our adhesive science to work in all climates all year long for their application requirements,” he adds.

“Depending on the print provider relationship with their customers, they can price these finished applications accordingly,” states Tesch.

The printing industry is highly competitive and delivering exceptional service and cutting costs can be crucial advantages. “When a print provider can go the extra mile—like accepting an

installation that others decline due to cold weather or offering reliable, high-performing solutions—they gain an edge. Whether or not these services command a premium, they equip providers to broaden their offerings, reduce production time, and minimize costs. By using materials that perform reliably in the field and enable clean, easy removal, providers can further reduce installation expenses and add significant value to their clients’ projects,” comments Kempf.

“Most products on the market today have a recommended application temperature of 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and in some places that rules out installation for six months of the year,” adds Kroll. “Having the ability to offer a product that allows you to install year-round is absolutely a selling feature when the alternative is not being able to sell anything.”

“In my opinion, print providers are looking for solutions that work in all climates all year. The solutions they bring to their partners need to be suitable all year long and as such are part of the overall solution. That said, installation in cold weather is slightly different and a little more time consuming so that

would certainly be part of the discussion,” offers Leblanc.

Ink and Laminate Considerations

While all ink types work well in cold weather conditions, ink compatibility is a consideration depending on the media selection.

Tesch recommends solvent inks because of their strong adhesion and resistance to weathering and the variety of compatible substrates. She also suggests UV-curable inks because they dry fast and retain color vibrancy in cold conditions and are long lasting with resistance to fading and weathering.

“For the most part, all inks are compatible, however it is important to check with your ink supplier to ensure you understand their service temperature requirements,” recommends Leblanc. “Some older version inks can be prone to cracking as they are rigid to start with and adding cold weather makes it worse. Any flexible ink compatible with the media will work.”

General Formulations’ solutions for cold temperature are compatible with eco-solvent, latex/ resin, and UV inks with a range of roll and sheet sizes available, confirms Kroll.

Continental Grafix panoRama Innova Ice perforated window film is compatible with solvent, eco-solvent, and latex ink only.

Continental Grafix iTac Clear is compatible with UV and the latest generation latex ink, while iTac White and X-Treme are universally compatible with all digital ink types.

“All ink types offer good stability in cold weather conditions however, flexible UV ink may offer a slight edge over alternatives due to the immediate curing and hard finish, making it highly resistant to temperature fluctuations, including freezing conditions when long-term durability is desired and without the added protection that an overlaminate can provide,” shares Kempf.

Overlaminates are another consideration. “Overlaminates can be beneficial for window media in cold climates, but aren’t always necessary,” says Kempf.

Kroll agrees, noting that overlaminates are not required for window graphics but can be used to extend the life of the graphic or allow for easier removal. “For instance, an optically clear cast vinyl laminate is recommended for use on perforated window films, both to prevent water from clogging the holes and cancelling out the seethrough feature, but also as it helps hold the film together when it’s removed. Otherwise, most window installations are relatively short term and do not require lamination.”

Leblanc says lamination is not necessarily required for cold weather applications if the right media is chosen. “Thicker medias can avoid the need for lamination as they have enough body on their own to handle the installation. We laminate for finish and function but if we are laminating for body only, it might be time to ask the question why.”

Tesch adds that overlaminates provide an extra layer of protection against environmental factors such as temperature variations, moisture, UV light, road salt, etc. “They help enhance durability and preserve the vibrancy of the graphics.”

“In the case of perforated window film an overlaminate can keep water, dirt, and dust out of the holes and ensure a clear view,” suggests Kempf.

However, Kempf agrees that not all window media requires an overlaminate and could add unnecessary material and labor cost. “It’s best to consult the durability rating of the window media used prior to making the decision to add an overlaminate. If desired, choose an optically clear cast overlaminate.”

Out in the Cold

Window graphics are requested year round, therefore it is essential that print providers are well versed in which media options are able to withstand below-freezing temperatures for install and the life of the graphic. Choosing the right media guarantees a successful outcome. D

Laser Engraving Options

aser engraving is achievable whether working with a dedicated device or a multi-faceted piece of equipment capable of routing and laser cutting depending on the module selected at the time of operation.

Either scenario presents print service providers (PSPs) with opportunity, whether it be additional revenue streams, diversifying product offerings, or creating cross-selling opportunities.

Opening Up

Standing out from the competition by offering a service and executing it well is challenging in an oversaturated market. Offering a variety of services and meeting the needs of customers from various backgrounds is appealing.

“When you combine your established design, marketing, sales infrastructure, and loyal Above) Plastic is just one of many materials a laser machine like those from Trotec Laser can cut precisely and engrave in detail.

customer base with the addition of a large format, versatile laser engraving service, your potential becomes limitless. It’s like adding a powerful ‘printer’ to your toolbox that can engrave creative designs on real, everyday materials. You can significantly boost visibility and advertising value by choosing to engrave items commonly found in high-traffic areas,” explains Tong Li, Ph.D., CEO, AP Lazer.

Diversification helps businesses standout. “Wide format print

providers benefit from adding laser engraving services by diversifying their offerings, which attracts a wider customer base and creates opportunities for cross selling,” explains a representative from Trotec Laser, Inc.

In regards to cross selling with existing services, Mike Dean, VP of sales and marketing, Epilog Laser, provides an example of clients who request printed signage, but might also want engraved plaques.

“By diversifying their service offering in adding laser engraving capabilities, a PSP creates an additional revenue stream. Laser engraving opens up new revenue opportunities, sometimes by gaining new customers, sometimes

with offering this service to existing customers,” agrees Christina Lefebvre, area sales managerNorth America, eurolaser.

New Products and Services

Like most applications found in the graphic arts, the sky is the limit when it comes to laser engraving. The available technologies make it possible to engrave—or cut—almost anything via a laser.

A vast array of products and services is available to anyone offering laser engraving. This includes “personalized gifts such as custom-engraved photo frames and keepsakes; corporate and promotional items like engraved pens, awards, and business cards; customized signage

and display items; decorative items like engraved glassware, wood, and acrylic art pieces; and tailored solutions for the fashion and leather industries,” lists the Trotec Laser representative.

“By offering these products, wide format print providers can tap into new markets and enhance their service portfolio, catering to various customer needs and preferences,” shares Dean.

Li notes that corporate gifting is a $242 billion market. PSPs should “consider the possibilities laser engraving offers for gifts personalized with names, slogans, and company logos.”

In addition, “signage offers a clear advertising benefit. Use laser engraving to elevate massive stone monuments, simple bathroom signs, and everything in between,” comments Li.

Outside of personalized gifts and signage, another avenue is the industrial market. There is opportunity in “electronic displays, like control panels, or into more industrial markets like automotive or aerospace,” says Lefebvre.

Decorative furnishings is another segment. “Take advantage of business to business and business to consumer interior furnishing and make spaces unique with creative engraved

designs. Don’t forget about the simple features we interact with everyday. Doors, windows, and floors are blank canvases ready for an engraving upgrade,” suggests Li.

No matter what the object is, “laser engraving allows customization on any product without weight or size limitations,” says Li.

Adding Lasers

Laser engraving is possible in two different ways—by adding a tool onto existing cutting equipment or purchasing a dedicated laser device.

Dedicated equipment is favored for a number of reasons. The Trotec Laser representative says dedicated is the overwhelming choice because of its “superior precision, efficiency, and capability to handle diverse materials and high-volume orders.”

Lefebvre suggests considerations like the size of the material that needs to be engraved and the volume of production dictate whether the user would benefit from a dedicated laser device versus a tool found on a flatbed cutter.

“If the customer is cutting or engraving small pieces, then an enclosed laser device with a small footprint might be perfect. If the customer wishes to cut and engrave bigger sheets—acrylic

for example, or maximize their volume of production, then an automated laser cutting system on a flatbed is ideal,” shares Lefebvre.

Other factors to consider include cost and budget as well as space and workflow. “To determine the best fit, assess your demand, evaluate your budget and space, consider your longterm goals, and if possible, test on both pieces of equipment,” shares Dean.

Cost and budget-related, dedicated equipment “typically involves a higher initial investment but may offer better capabilities, such as larger engraving areas and more powerful lasers. An add-on tool is generally less expensive upfront but may require additional adjustments or compromises in functionality,” admits Dean.

For space and workflow, “a dedicated device requires its own footprint, so space availability is a consideration. It may streamline

the workflow if it’s specifically designed for engraving. Utilizing existing equipment with an add-on tool can save space, but it may complicate workflows if the operations are not seamlessly integrated,” adds Dean.

Conquering the Curve

Whether you choose to add laser engraving via a dedicated device or in addition to an existing piece of hardware, plan for learning curves.

“When a wide format printer adds a dedicated laser device, the learning curve can vary based on several factors, including the user’s prior experience with similar technologies, the complexity of the new device, and the training provided. Running the laser itself is very intuitive. Most people get tripped up learning to design for the laser. So, if you know design software, you’ve already got a leg up,” recommends Dean.

On the dedicated side, the Trotec Laser representative admits that the learning curve can initially be steep. “Operators need to familiarize themselves with new software, machine settings, and maintenance routines specific to the laser engraver. This includes understanding material handling, adjusting laser parameters for different substrates, and mastering design software integration.”

“When purchasing a laser cutting device, the learning curve would be the same as adding any other CNC cutting technology. The operators will learn how to control the wattage and the speed to achieve the desired effects on each of their materials. Maintenance would also be similar, and should be well documented in the manufacturer’s machine care instructions,” explains Lefebvre.

Li recommends considering the learning curve involved if you plan on adding a dedicated laser engraver to your business. “Laser control software and

laser parameter settings can vary, and each material responds to laser engraving differently. Investing in commercial grade laser equipment, such as AP Lazer, with adaptable configurations can be beneficial.”

Automate the Process

Automation features included with laser engravers minimize labor-intensive work. This means simplifying physical parts of the

process like loading and unloading or relying on technology to position material for engraving.

Right out of the gate, when implementing a laser device for the first time, Trotec Laser’s Ruby laser software is helpful in what the company’s representative calls “easing the transition.” The software offers user-friendly interfaces, streamlined workflows, and comprehensive tutorials.

Once up and running, software minimizes labor-intensive work like repetitive tasks, streamlines

operations, reduces manual adjustments, and increases overall productivity, according to the Trotec Laser representative.

Specific features that aid in this include “smart positioning systems, such as cameras or laser pointers to ensure precise material placement, while autofocus capabilities adjust the laser height for different materials without manual input. Batch processing allows for multiple items to be processed in a single run, and remote monitoring and control enable operators to manage the machine efficiently from a distance,” continues the Trotec Laser representative.

“For high-volume production, multiple job automation features can minimize labor,” adds Li.

According to Lefebvre, automation is what sets a laser machine apart from its competitors. At eurolaser, automation comes in the form of smart positioning systems like its new PositionPlus Professional scanning system feature.

“This feature uses a camera system to find prints and patterns on the cutting surface and cut the contour. This eliminates the need to print registration marks and read dot by dot to know where to cut the printed materials. The camera system scans the surface to find the contour. This process takes less than four seconds before the cutting starts,” shares Lefebvre.

An example of a physical benefit is how the shuttle system and twin table systems are automated on eurolaser’s hardware. “Both features enable loading and unloading of the materials while the system is running, to increase productivity and limit down time,” explains Lefebvre.

Benefit from Laser Engraving

Laser engraving is not for every print provider. Taking a look at the learning curve and identifying why a laser engraver would be useful in a shop are some of the important first steps in the process. D
