Illinois’ minimum wage to increase to $15 on Jan. 1, completing 6-year transition

2019 law was Pritzker’s first major legislative victory

bszalinski@capitolnewsillinois.com

The minimum wage in Illinois will increase to $15 an hour on Jan. 1, completing a six-year transition period since the increase was approved in 2019.

Beginning New Year’s Day, Illinois workers making minimum wage will see wages rise by $1 and tipped workers will see their paychecks bump to $9 an hour. Youth workers under 18 who work fewer than 650 hours a year will have a $13 minimum wage.

The final increase, ending a six-year ramp which began with the minimum wage rising from $8.25 to $9.25 on Jan. 1, 2020, puts a bow on Gov. JB Pritzker’s first major legislative victory. He signed the wage increase in February 2019 about a month after being sworn in for his first term, checking off a top campaign promise.

“Since day one of my administration, I’ve made it my mission to build an economy that works for everyone and raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour fulfills that promise to our working families,” Pritzker said in a statement. “This increase honors the workers who power our state and ensures they can better support their families, bringing us closer to a stronger, more equitable economy for all.”

Illinois will be one of 10 states with a minimum wage of $15 or greater, according to the National Employment Law Project. Twenty-two other states are also increasing their wages on Jan. 1.

The minimum wage increase is one of many economic changes that have happened since 2019, including effects of the pandemic, Illinois Chamber of Commerce CEO Lou Sandoval told Capitol News Illinois. He said those have caused businesses to adjust their operations in a variety of ways, such as increasing automation.

“I think you’re starting to see businesses pivot in terms of how they’re adjusting,” Sandoval said. “You’re seeing this at the national chains.” Some restaurants, for example, are “moving

away from larger sit-down areas into grab-and-go.”

Illinois job growth has been slow since October 2019, according to a November report by the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability. The state has seen a net increase of 28,700 jobs from October 2019 through October 2024. That’s a growth rate of 0.5%, compared to the national rate of 4.9%.

The rate of new job postings by businesses at the beginning of the year will shed some light on how the jump to $15 on Jan. 1 is impacting business operations, Sandoval said.

To help small businesses with the change, the state provides a tax credit through 2027 to businesses with 50 or fewer employees for wages paid to minimum-wage workers.

The 2019 minimum wage law marked the first increase since the wage hit $8.25 in 2010. Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford, D-Westchester, introduced a bill to raise it to $15 an hour in 2017 that was passed by the General Assembly and vetoed by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. Lightford sponsored the initiative again in 2019.

“As a state, we have helped countless workers make ends meet, reduce financial stress, and provide a more solid foundation for their futures,” Lightford said in a statement. “The $15 minimum wage is a testament to our commitment to economic justice and our belief that everyone who works full time deserves a living wage.”

The value of a $15 minimum wage, however, has changed since lawmakers acted in 2019. A person making $8.25 in February 2019 would need to earn $10.30 today to have the same buying power after inflation, according to the Consumer Price Index. A $15 hourly wage today has the buying power that $12.02 had in February 2019. A person would need to make an $18.72 wage today to have the same buying power that $15 had in February 2019. Top Democrats didn’t say if they will push for new increases.

“As a Senator of 25 years, history has shown my commitment of fighting to ensure workers are paid a living wage. That commitment still holds strong today,” Lightford said in an email

statement.

Pritzker said he supports ideas that will help workers make more money, but didn’t commit to supporting any plan to raise the minimum wage further when pressed about it at a news conference Dec. 11.

“We always are thinking about how do you balance the need for higher wages with the needs that businesses have to hire people and do it affordably. But I think we did it the right way when we did it back in 2019,” Pritzker said.

The new $15 wage equates to a 40-hourper-week annual salary of $31,200 before taxes. That equals the federal government’s poverty level for a four-person household. The poverty level is $15,060 in a single-person household.

But according to calculations in a national project by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, $15 hourly still doesn’t equate to a “living” wage in Illinois, based on U.S. Census Bureau cost of living and other cost estimates provided by federal agencies adjusted for inflation.

A single adult with no children needs a $22.86 hourly salary to make a living wage in Illinois, while a two-parent household with two working adults and three children would each need to earn $31.69. In a two-parent household with one working adult and one child, the worker needs $36.49 to make a living wage, according to the MIT project.

Inflation is making it hard for workers to benefit from wage increases, Sandoval said, adding rising wages also cause businesses to raise prices.

“They might get the wage increase on one side, but their cost of living goes up accordingly,” Sandoval said.

Ocean seminar

Contributors

A second National Science Foundation seminar in Delaware followed the Arctic seminar. It focused on the deteriorating environmental conditions of the Atlantic Ocean. This time Sonia, Lin and Tad headed back to Illinois to prepare for our move to Ann Arbor where we were accepted as graduate students in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Michigan.

Sonia drove herself and our two children back to Illinois while Bob took a bus to the ocean seminar with his books, clothing and some personal items. When he crossed the border to get back into the United States a luggage check found the syringe and medicine he used to control his allergies. The bus was delayed until the guards were convinced no illegal drugs were involved.

The bus to New York arrived too late for Bob to catch the last bus of the night to take him to the ocean seminar. At the

bus depot police were chasing a group of young people trying to get into the backs of large trucks to hitch a ride to Woodstock for the music festival as regular bus service was cancelled. As the depot emptied Bob was left alone to spend the night. The next day bus service was restored and Bob got to the ocean seminar.

A major environmental concern was the status of ocean fish populations. Beyond imposing limits on the amount of fish being harvested by commercial interests was the effort to restore dwindling ocean food resources. There were attempts to raise young fish in structures in shallow ocean shoreline areas. However hurricanes and other storms often destroyed or damaged the structures limiting that approach to raising young fish or other edible organisms.

Overfishing and high rates of harvesting food resources were depleting desired populations. Water from streams, rivers and drainage systems brought pollution from urban and farming operations into

the ocean adversely impacting the edible resources. Filling estuaries for urban developments reduced their capacity to nurture food resources essential to restoring ocean populations.

The lure of living along the ocean shoreline was also increasing ocean front developments which reduced the area of nurseries available to nurture future populations. Ongoing development of underground reservoirs of fresh water essential for human wellbeing and use dropped only to be replaced by intrusions of salty ocean waters.

Somewhat surprising was the comment by one of the ocean experts who lamented his career choice which had raised his interest in ocean fish populations led to securing a career in the field. Upon reflection he felt a more promising career path would have been in geology and mineral resources.

We did spend one delightful evening along the coast fishing for eels which provided participants with a tasty treat.

During the next two summers, we taught an environmental class for high school students enrolled in a private school in New Jersey. A member of an environmental organization in the area led the class to an estuary where we identified native plant and animal species. Our observations of the rich species diversity were turned into a report sent to state officials in an effort the help preserve the estuary.

Environmental interests had learned of long standing development plans to fill in the estuary and create a new expressway through the wetland. Some large broken chunks of concrete were already dumped along its edges.

A substantial portion of the estuary eventually became the site of a new NFL football stadium. We doubt the roaring masses of fans realize the loss of ocean fish and other edible ocean resources caused by intrusion of the stadium on what had been a rich natural area as they cheer for their favorite teams.

South Korea Plane Fire

South Korea to inspect Boeing aircraft as it struggles to find cause of plane crash that killed 179

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean officials said Monday they will conduct safety inspections of all Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated by the country’s airlines, as they struggle to determine what caused a plane crash that killed 179 people a day earlier.

Sunday’s crash, the country’s worst aviation disaster in decades, triggered an outpouring of national sympathy. Many people worry how effectively the South Korean government will handle the disaster as it grapples with a leadership vacuum following the recent successive impeachments of President Yoon Suk Yeol and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, the country’s top two officials, amid political tumult caused by Yoon’s brief imposition of martial law earlier this month.

New acting President Choi Sang-mok on Monday presided over a task force meeting on the crash and instructed authorities to conduct an emergency review of the country’s aircraft operation systems.

“The essence of a responsible response would be renovating the aviation safety systems on the whole to prevent recurrences of similar incidents and building a safer Republic of South Korea,” said Choi, who is also deputy prime minister and finance minister.

The Boeing 737-800 plane operated by South Korean budget airline Jeju Air aborted its first landing attempt for reasons that aren’t immediately clear. Then, during its second landing attempt, it received a bird strike warning from the ground control center before its pilot issued a distress signal. The plane landed without its front landing gear deployed, overshot the runway, slammed into a concrete fence and burst into a fireball.

Alan Price, a former chief pilot at Delta Air Lines and now a consultant, said the Boeing 737-800 is a “proven airplane” that belongs to a different class of aircraft than the Boeing 737 Max jetliner that was linked to fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019.

But South Korea’s Transport Ministry said Monday it plans to conduct safety inspections of all of the 101 Boeing 737-800 jetliners operated by the country’s airlines as well as a broader review into safety standards at Jeju Air, which operates 39 of those planes.

Senior ministry official Joo Jong-wan

said representatives from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and Boeing were expected to arrive in South Korea on Monday to participate in the investigation.

Ministry officials also said they will look into whether the Muan airport’s localizer — a concrete fence housing a set of antennas designed to guide aircraft safely during landings — should have been made with lighter materials that would break more easily upon impact.

Joo said the ministry has determined that similar concrete structures are in other domestic airports, including in Jeju Island and the southern cities of Yeosu and Pohang, as well as airports in the United States, Spain and South Africa.

Video of the crash indicated that the pilots did not deploy flaps or slats to slow the aircraft, suggesting a possible hydraulic failure, and did not manually lower the landing gear, suggesting they did not have time, said John Cox, a retired airline pilot and CEO of Safety Operating Systems in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Despite that, the jetliner was under control and traveling in a straight line, and damage and injuries likely would have been minimized if not for the barrier being so close to the runway, Cox said.

Other observers said the videos showed the plane was suffering from suspected engine trouble but the landing gear malfunction was likely a direct reason for the crash. They said there wouldn’t likely be a link between the landing gear problem and the suspected engine issue.

Earlier Monday, another Boeing 737-800 plane operated by Jeju Air returned to Seoul’s Gimpo International Airport shortly after takeoff when the pilot detected a landing gear issue. Song Kyung-hoon, a Jeju Air executive, said the issue was resolved through communication with a land-based equipment center, but the pilot decided to return to Gimpo as a precautionary measure.

Joo said officials were reviewing whether there might have been communication problems between air traffic controllers and the pilot. “Our current understanding is that, at some point during the go-around process, communication became somewhat ineffective or was interrupted, ahead of the landing and impact,” he said.

Ministry officials said Monday the plane’s flight data and cockpit audio

recorders were moved to a research center at Gimpo airport ahead of their analysis.

Ministry officials earlier said it would take months to complete the investigation of the crash.

The Muan crash is South Korea’s deadliest aviation disaster since 1997, when a Korean Airlines plane crashed in Guam, killing 228 people on board.

The crash left many South Koreans shocked and ashamed, with the government announcing a seven-day national mourning period through Jan. 4. Some questioned whether the crash involved safety or regulatory issues, such as a 2022 Halloween crush in Seoul that killed 160 people and a 2014 ferry sinking that killed 304 people.

The Transport Ministry said authorities have identified 146 bodies and are collecting DNA and fingerprint samples from the other 33.

Park Han Shin, a representative of the bereaved families, said they were told that the bodies were so badly damaged that officials need time before returning them to their families.

“I demand that the government mobilize more personnel to return our brothers and family members as intact as possible more swiftly,” he said, choking down tears.

The crash was yet more major news for South Koreans already reeling from a political crisis set off by Yoon’s martial law decree, which brought hundreds of troops into Seoul streets and revived traumatic memories of past military rule in the 1970-80s.

The political tumult resulted in the opposition-controlled National Assembly impeaching Yoon and Han. The safety minister stepped down and the police chief was arrested over their roles in the martial law inforcement.

The absence of top officials responsible for managing disasters has led to concerns.

“We are deeply worried whether the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters really can handle the disaster,” the mass-circulation JoongAng Ilbo newspaper said in an editorial Monday.

Value-seekers drove 2024’s retail trends and dead ends

Value was in vogue in 2024.

Shoppers and restaurant patrons in the U.S. were choosy about where and how to spend their money as they wrestled with high housing and food prices.

Well-heeled customers traded down to Walmart and Aldi. Diners opted for fast food or home cooking instead of sit-down restaurants. Department stores struggled as buyers shopped online or at cheaper chains like H&M.

Residents also moved away from buying furniture or investing in expensive renovations, opting to refresh their homes with inexpensive items like frames and candles.

Those shifts changed the buying and eating landscape in 2024. As of Dec. 20, Coresight Research tracked 48 retail bankruptcies in the U.S., compared with 25 during the same period a year ago. And at least 22 restaurant chains filed for bankruptcy this year, the highest number since 2020, according to BankruptcyData, a company that tracks filings.

Here are some of the trends – and dead ends – that The Associated Press tracked in 2024:

WINNERS:

WALMART

The nation’s largest retailer typically shines during tough times as shoppers turn to the discounter for groceries, which account for 60% of Walmart’s total business. And just like during the 2008 Great Recession, Walmart saw households with incomes of $100,000 or above making up more of its clientele. But this time around, company executives think they can keep those customers because they’ve expanded online services and added more stylish clothes and mannequins.

AMAZON

Online juggernaut Amazon leaned into its reputation as a destination for deals to appeal to bargain-hungry buyers. In November it launched Amazon Haul, a new low-cost storefront featuring electronics, apparel and other products priced under $20. And the company said its Prime Day event in July resulted in record sales. But Amazon could face headwinds in the coming year with threatened tariffs on products from China and labor unrest in the U.S.

FAST

CASUAL CHAINS

It was a good year for restaurant chains like Shake Shack that are a step up from fast food but still offer good value. Cava, which specializes in fresh Mediterranean food, said its revenue surged more than

33% in the first nine months of this year as it rapidly built new restaurants. Chipotle got some heat from value-conscious diners about smaller portions, but drew customers back after retraining workers to ensure “consistent and generous” portions.

JEANS SELLERS

The wide-leg jeans silhouette – the “it” style that rapidly replaced boot-cut and skinny jeans – drove sales across many different retailers this year. Macy’s, Abercrombie & Fitch, Levi Strauss, Gap and Stitch Fix were among those citing the trend as a big sales booster in recent months. Value-conscious buyers could snap them up at Walmart for $29. At the high end, Gucci had wide-leg versions for $1,200.

MCDONALD’S

The year didn’t begin well for McDonald’s. The company’s sales slumped as inflation-weary customers chose to eat at home instead of grabbing fast food. But a $5 meal deal introduced in June helped draw lower-income customers back into stores. McDonald’s extended the deal through the end of this year and said more value is coming in 2025. The fast food giant is working to get customers back after a fall E. coli outbreak linked to raw onions in Quarter Pounder hamburgers sickened at least 104 people in 14 states.

LOSERS:

TARGET

Target’s cheap chic fashions and home decor have long been a big attraction, but the chain faced challenges in 2024. Unlike Walmart, Target is more reliant on discretionary items like clothing because less than a quarter of its sales come from food and beverages. It has always battled a perception of being more expensive, and analysts say its merchandise has lately been in disarray. Still, Target drew crowds on Black Friday with exclusive Taylor Swift products.

STARBUCKS

Starbucks had a tough year. Orders are getting increasingly complex, with thousands of ways to customize drinks. That’s leading to long lines and incorrect pickup times on the mobile app. New offerings like olive oil-infused coffee didn’t attract customers, who also grew tired of Starbucks’ high prices. Starbucks hired a new CEO, Brian Niccol, in the fall to help turn things around. But labor strife, which led to strikes in December, could continue to hurt the company in 2025.

LEGACY RESTAURANTS

Several decades-old chains threw in the towel in 2024, succumbing to rising competition, changing dining patterns and

big portfolios of outdated restaurants. Red Lobster, TGI Fridays and Buca di Beppo all filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and shuttered dozens of locations. A leaner Red Lobster later exited bankruptcy under new ownership, but it remains to be seen whether older chains can turn around years of declining sales.

BIG TICKET ITEMS

At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, U.S. consumers took advantage of low interest rates and stimulus benefits to remodel their homes and make other big purchases. But last year, they pulled back. That’s been a challenge for retailers like Best Buy, the nation’s largest consumer electronics chain, which noted lower sales of appliances, home theaters and gaming equipment. Home Depot and Lowe’s also reported lower sales of big-ticket items, particularly discretionary kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects.

DEPARTMENT STORES

Department stores, particularly those catering to middle income shoppers, have

struggled to hold onto customers as many turn to online shopping or to fast-fashion retailers. Among the worst performers: Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based Kohl’s, which reported its 11th consecutive quarter of sales declines this year. Outgoing CEO Tom Kingsbury recently owned up to merchandising mistakes, including scaling back fine jewelry, popular store label brands and petite sizes. Customers will see those categories return in the coming year.

Macy’s said it would close 150 namesake stores over three years and open 15 higher-end Bloomingdale’s. Upscale Nordstrom, on the other hand, had a better than expected fiscal year due largely to soaring sales at its off-price Nordstrom Rack stores. Last week, the department store chain agreed to be acquired and taken private by Nordstrom family members and a Mexican retail group. As a private company, Nordstrom may have more leeway and less scrutiny of its efforts to reinvigorate sales.

Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton and Rockford native Trace Foster to release album with new band Close Enemies

RRI: Tell us about your new band Close Enemies and who was responsible for putting this fantastic lineup together?

Tom Hamilton: Ironically, they pretty much recruited me! Trace Foster (guitarist), was my bass tech and had also worked for Joe Perry (Aerosmith guitarist) years ago. He’s known as being one of the best techs in the business and soon to be known for his playing and song writing as well. Peter Stroud, our other guitar player has been playing with Sheryl Crowe for 25 years and is a consummate musician and writer. I think he’s looking forward to people hearing him as an awesome rock guitarist. Tony Brock, our drummer had a band called the Babys which put out at least a couple of rock hits. He went on to play for Rod Stewart for 12 years and has incredible power and taste. Chasen Hampton, was the last to join and is an incredible singer who really interprets the songs the way we heard them. Also, our writing partner is Gary Stier and he is a more than talented wordsmith and songwriter. When I joined, these guys had been writing for a while so the bulk of the songs were there when I arrived. I brought in a song and collaborated on another. I have a few others that we’ll hopefully try out in the future. It’s been a pleasure to add to this material with my point of view on bass and everybody has made me feel welcome to throw my two cents in here and there in other ways.

Trace Foster Guitar: (Adding to Tom’s reply) Yeah, the band was my idea from the start. After my band Letters from Jett, struggled for a couple years I decided that I was too old to drive around in a van with nothing to show for it and decided I needed to up my game and my band members. I know a lot of people in the music business and decided I was going to go after guys who I liked and respected just see what happened. Our first Drummer was Actually Cheap Trick Drummer Daxx Nielsen. I wanted Daxx from the get go. He is such a great drummer. The problem we had with Daxx was he has no spare time. We really needed someone who had more time to dedicate to this project. I started writing with Chicagoan Gary Stier. Gary and I have been in bands together since the early 80’s way back to Atlanta, GA. Once we had a couple really good Ideas i approached guitarist Peter Stroud who said yes right away. He is one of my favorite guitarist ever so its such a thrill to play side by side with that guy. After Peter we asked Robert Kearns from Sheryl Crow’s band to play

Bass. Robert had also played with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Cry of Love and he said yes. We started writing immediately. Daxx and Robert had ended up leaving the band because of time restraints and family. So, there I was in Vegas touring with Aerosmith (as Tom’s bass tech) and thought you know what, the best bassist I know is right over there! Go ask him! (laughs) As a side note, I had actually been playing with the guys in Aerosmith for Years. I had played Joe Perry’s parts in Rehearsals when he didn’t want to soundcheck and when Brad Whitford got COVID I played his parts for a week of Rehearsals. I also played with Joe in 2010 on his solo tour so Tom knew I could play. Tom asked me to send him some songs and that he’d think about it. So, I sent him three songs and he called me right away and said “I’m in, these songs are great!” We knew that we needed a drummer next so Peter Suggested we talk to Tony Brock. I said “THE TONY BROCK of The Babys?” Yep. Tony is one of the best rock drummers ever in my book. That man’s feel and pocket are amazing. We then found Chasen, our singer, in Boston. Basic tracks were recorded in Atlanta, Ga, and the drums were recut at Peter Frampton’s studio here in Nashville. The album is done and now were ready to make some serious noise. Oh, and the funny thing is for our 8 show run were doing it all in a Van. Go figure!

RRI: Tom, what were your thoughts when you realized Aerosmith was done touring? Was it always in the back of your mind that you would continue to write music and perform live with another band post Aerosmith?

Tom: Well, when I found out that our tour was being cancelled and that Aerosmith was retiring from touring, I was sad but not shocked. After all, the tour was always meant to be our last one which is why we called it ”Peace Out”. I never even considered the idea that I would stop being involved in writing and recording. I had no idea what form my musical future would take, I just knew it would be there.

RRI: Trace, having toured extensively as Joe Perry’s guitar tech and as Tom’s bass guitar tech (among many others) what would you say are the biggest challenges that you’ve faced and what’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned while working with all of these great musicians?

Trace: The biggest challenges are being able to adapt and make sure everything is consistent night after night. When I am guitar teching, I need to make sure these guys have the sound they need to do their job. I’m sure you know this Todd but you

don’t set an amp at one setting and expect that sound to work the next night. There are so many variables in play. I need to be able to adjust accordingly and consistently night after night and sometimes during a show! The most valuable lesson I’ve learned as a guitarist is to listen. Listen to what’s going on around you and become part of it and most imprtantly, to leave space. Space is the key, Lots of guitar players think you need to fill up every bit of space in a song but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’ve learned so much by working with the likes of Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones and AC/ DC. When I was working with The Stones my ear mix was Ronnie Wood in my right ear and Keith Richards in my left. To hear those guys intertwine their guitar lines together was magical. They never said anything and I’m pretty sure they didn’t talk about it. There were moments when Ronnie would stop and Keith would play this beautiful line and vice versa. It was different every night so it wasn’t planned. When you get to that point you know your onto something.

RRI: So when’s the album coming out?

Tom: We have an album recorded that’s being mixed and mastered now. We’re looking forward to releasing our first song on, I believe, the 17th of January. It’s called The Sound of a Train. We recently signed with TLG/Rock /Virgin So we have the right people in place to make sure this music is heard. That was the hardest part. We will be releasing a song a month for a few months then we will release the whole record.

RRI: Has there been any reaction from any of the other members of Aerosmith to what you’re doing now musically or are they pretty much wrapped up doing their own thing right now?

Tom: I have gotten some words of encouragement from most of the other guys. I saw Brad in Nashville when Close Enemies played there and he came to the show to lent support. I know he has a couple of things he’s thinking about. I’m pretty sure Joe is going to play some shows at some point this next year. Right now Steven is busy putting his yearly event together for his foundation Janie’s Fund which supports finding housing for those who are recovering from sexual abuse.

RRI: Trace, have you ever entertained the notion of putting a white streak in your hair a la Joe Perry?

Trace: No but I think that nature has the same thought you do! (laughs)

RRI: Are you guys covering any Aerosmith songs in your set and if so, who’s picking the songs?

Tom: Yeah, we are playing a couple of Aerosmith songs. Right now it’s Sweet Emotion and Sick as a Dog. Those were my first choices and the rest of the guys jumped right on. We’re also playing a couple of hits of Tony’s from his days in The Babys.

RRI: Tom, what was your first reaction to seeing your Caricature on the cover of Aerosmith’s Draw the line album?

Tom: I’m proud to say that using Al Hirschfeld to draw the cover was my idea. I grew up with my parents listening to Broadway sound track albums and his art was almost always on the covers. Even as a young kid I was intrigued by his unique style.

RRI: Tom, when was the last time you spoke to Jimmy Crespo or Rick Dufay (former Aerosmith guitarists) ?

Tom: I saw Rick when we were working on our last studio album “Music From Another Dimension”. I have fond memories of when he was part of the band in the early eighties. I haven’t seen Jimmy Crespo in a while. He deserves a lot more recognition for his playing and writing on “Rock in a Hard Place”. That album has some really cool guitar playing on it and it was all him.

RRI: Who came up with the name Close Enemies and is there any significant meaning or did you think it just sounded cool?

Trace: Peter Stroud’s wife Lynn came up with the name. This is a true story; We spent a year trying to find a name. We are all spread out across the US so we would do weekly zoom calls to talk Business and about names and when we did find one we liked we would start researching it. We would goggle it and then see if tthat name was used on Spotify or apple music. Every name was taken. lol Lynn had mentioned Close Enemies to us and it just fit. Of course the term comes from the Godfather Movie, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer” But of course we were shocked to see it wasn’t being used.

RRI: Tom and Trace tell us what’s next for Close Enemies? Websites, Dates, new music, etc.

Trace: We have 8 dates lined up starting Jan. 8th in Philadelphia going through Jan. 29th ending in St. Louis. You can see those dates and all things Close Enemies at closeenemiestheband.com or Close Enemies band on Facebook, Close Enemies official on Instagram and close enemies on Tik Tok! We will be playing the Chicago City Winery on Jan. 25th and would love some Rockford Love!
