New Downtown Rockford Public Library added to Rockford Landmark Ornament Collection at J.R. Kortman: The beautiful new Rockford Public Library has been selected as this year’s new ornament added to the Rockford Landmark Ornament collection at J.R. Kortman Center for Design at 107 North Main Street. “The new library is such a cultural and architectural asset for our Downtown and riverfront,” says Doc Slafkosky, co-owner of J.R. Kortman. “It is the first time we’ve selected a brand new building to be in the Rockford Landmark Ornament Collection, but the building has become an significant and admired landmark the moment it was completed this past spring.” The Iconic Building (formerly the Rockford News Tower) and the Times Theater are are also part this of unique collection of hand painted ornaments that have been created for J.R. Kortman of local landmarks since 1997. Other recent additions to the Landmark Collection include the Elks Lodge, the Embassy Suites Hotel, Coronado Theatre and the Rockford Armory. All are on Main Street and each are official Registered National Landmarks. Alexander Liberman’s “Symbol” sculpture in Sinnissippi Park along the river is by far the best selling ornament of all other buildings and places that have been made into ornaments since we started commissioning them back in 1997, said Slafkosky. “It really has become Rockford’s definitive landmark!” The Rockford Landmark Ornament Collection also includes the Prairie Street Brewhouse, East and West High Schools, St. Anthony Church, two views of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Laurent House, a special edition of Memorial Hall, the Beattie Park Gazebo, the Faust Landmark Building, the “Y” Log Lodge, Burpee Natural History Museum, Anderson Gardens, and the Coronado stage/proscenium. In addition to the Swedish Historical Society’s Erlander Home, other historic houses in the collection include the “Limestone Mansion,” home to the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, and the “Cobblestone House,” located at 2127 Broadway, one of Rockford’s oldest houses. All the Landmark ornament images are individually hand-painted on the inside of a glass sphere, utilizing an indigenous art technique unique to China, originally applied to “snuff” bottles and other vessels since the early 1800s. Each collectable ornament is truly a miniature work of art.

Smell of raw cannabis allows police to search a vehicle, IL Supreme Court rules

SPRINGFIELD – The smell of raw cannabis in a vehicle gives police probable cause to search it, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled last week.

The ruling comes months after the court ruled the smell of burnt cannabis does not give police probable cause to search a vehicle, drawing a fine line for motorists and police to follow when evaluating legal possession of cannabis.

“The odor of burnt cannabis suggests prior or current cannabis use, and the odor of raw cannabis suggests that cannabis is currently possessed in the area where the odor is detected. Different laws are implicated based on those inferences,”

Justice P. Scott Neville, a Democrat, wrote in the majority opinion.

The 4-2 ruling by the court, with Republican Justice Lisa Holder White abstaining, found that an Illinois State Police trooper conducted a legal search of a car in which Vincent Molina was a passenger in December 2020, after the driver was

pulled over for speeding on Interstate 88 in Whiteside County.

According to court documents, the trooper said he smelled raw cannabis in the vehicle and initiated a search. The trooper then found multiple joints in a cardboard box in the car’s center console and cannabis in a sealed plastic container in the glove box. Molina was charged with a misdemeanor for illegal possession of cannabis.

A circuit court initially ruled in Molina’s favor, finding the search was unreasonable because Illinois law allows people over age 21 to possess recreational cannabis. But an appellate court and the Illinois Supreme Court disagreed with that ruling, citing the state’s laws for how cannabis should legally be possessed in a vehicle. Illinois law requires cannabis to be in a “sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant cannabis container” when in a car and for it to be “reasonably inaccessible while the vehicle is moving.”

Neville wrote the trooper made a “reasonable inference” that the smell meant cannabis was illegally possessed.

“While cannabis is legal to possess generally, it is illegal to possess in a vehicle on an Illinois highway unless in an odorproof container,” Neville wrote. “The odor of raw cannabis strongly suggests that the cannabis is not being possessed within the parameters of Illinois law. And, unlike the odor of burnt cannabis, the odor of raw cannabis coming from a vehicle reliably points to when, where, and how the cannabis is possessed — namely, currently, in the vehicle, and not in an odor-proof container.”

The Illinois Supreme Court unanimously ruled in September, with White abstaining, that the smell of burnt cannabis does not indicate a crime has been committed and does not give police probable cause to search a vehicle. Though a state trooper found a gram of cannabis in the car at the center of that case, the driver exhibited no signs of impairment, and the trooper should not have searched the vehicle, the court concluded in an opinion authored by Neville.

Justice Mary Kay O’Brien wrote a dissenting opinion in Molina’s case, joined by Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis.

“It makes no sense to treat raw cannabis as more probative when the odor of burnt cannabis may suggest recent use, whereas the odor of raw cannabis does not suggest consumption,” O’Brien wrote. “If the crime suggested by the odor of burnt cannabis is not sufficient for probable cause, then certainly the crime suggested by the odor of raw cannabis cannot be either.”

O’Brien, a former state lawmaker, noted it is legal to possess certain amounts of cannabis in Illinois.

“The result, whether intentional or not, is to continue to stigmatize the use of cannabis despite the legislative efforts to legalize the use of cannabis,” she wrote. Supreme courts in other states have also issued rulings placing limits on when the smell of cannabis gives probable cause to police to search a vehicle.

Illinois lawmakers have also sought to enshrine limitations on vehicle searches based on the smell of cannabis into state law. The Senate passed a bill in 2023 that would prohibit police from searching a vehicle based on the smell of burnt or raw cannabis, but it stalled in the House pending resolution of the court cases.

NY Subway Chokehold Death

Veteran Daniel Penny is acquitted in NYC subway chokehold case

NEW YORK (AP) — A Marine veteran who used a chokehold on an agitated subway rider was acquitted on Monday in a death that became a prism for differing views about public safety, valor and vigilantism.

A Manhattan jury cleared Daniel Penny of criminally negligent homicide in Jordan Neely’s 2023 death. A more serious manslaughter charge was dismissed earlier in deliberations because the jury deadlocked on that count.

Both charges were felonies and carried the possibility of prison time.

Penny, who had shown little expression during the trial, briefly smiled as the verdict was read. Both applause and anger erupted in the courtroom, and Neely’s father and two supporters were told to leave after making various remarks — including vulgarities from one of the supporters. Another person also left, wailing with tears.

Penny’s lawyers said he was protecting himself and other subway passengers from a volatile, mentally ill man who was making alarming remarks and gestures.

The case amplified many American fault lines, among them race, politics, crime, urban life, mental illness and homelessness. Neely was Black. Penny is white.

There were sometimes dueling demonstrations outside the courthouse, and high-profile Republican politicians portrayed Penny as a hero while prominent Democrats attended Neely’s funeral.

Penny, 26, served four years in the Marines and went on to study architecture.

Neely, 30, was a sometime subway performer with a tragic life story: His mother was killed and stuffed in a suitcase when he was a teenager.

As a younger man, Neely did Michael Jackson tributes — complete with moonwalks — on the city’s streets and subways. But Neely also struggled with mental illness after losing his mother, whose boyfriend was convicted of murdering her.

Hospitalized for depression at age 14, Neely later was diagnosed with schizophrenia that at times made him hallucinate and become paranoid, according to medical records seen at the trial. Neely also used the synthetic cannabinoid K2 and realized it negatively affected his thinking and behavior, according to a 2019 hospital record. The drug was in his system when he died.

Neely told a doctor in 2017 that being homeless, living in poverty and having to “dig through the garbage” for food made him feel so worthless and hopeless that

he sometimes thought of killing himself, hospital records show.

About six years later, he boarded a subway under Manhattan on May 1, 2023, hurled his jacket onto the floor, and declared that he was hungry and thirsty and didn’t care if he died or went to jail, witnesses said. Some told 911 operators that he tried to attack people or indicated he’d harm riders, and several testified that they were afraid.

Neely was unarmed, with nothing but a muffin in his pocket, and didn’t touch any passengers on the train. One rider said he made lunging movements that alarmed her enough that she shielded her 5-year-old from him.

Penny, who was on his way from a college class to the gym, came up behind Neely, grabbed his neck, took him to the floor and “put him out,” as he told police at the scene.

Passengers’ video showed that at one point during the roughly six-minute hold, Neely tapped an onlooker’s leg and gestured to him. At another juncture, Neely briefly got an arm free. But he went still nearly a minute before Penny released him.

“He’s dying,” an unseen bystander said in the background of one video. “Let him go!”

A witness who stepped in to hold down Neely’s arms testified that he told Penny to free the man, though Penny’s lawyers noted the witness’ story changed significantly over time.

Penny told detectives shortly after the encounter that Neely threatened to kill people and the chokehold was an attempt to “de-escalate” the situation until police could arrive. The veteran said he held on after the train stopped because he wasn’t sure the doors were open and Neely periodically squirmed.

“I wasn’t trying to injure him. I’m just

trying to keep him from hurting anyone else. He’s threatening people. That’s what we learn in the Marine Corps,” Penny told the detectives, who had read him his rights.

However, a Marine Corps combat instructor — who trained Penny — testified that the veteran misused a chokehold technique he’d been taught.

Prosecutors said Penny reacted far too forcefully to someone he perceived as a peril, not a person. Prosecutors also argue that any need to protect passengers quickly ebbed when the train doors opened at the next station, seconds after Penny took action.

Although Penny himself told police he’d used “a choke” or “a chokehold,” one of his lawyers, Steven Raiser, cast it as a Marinetaught chokehold “modified as a simple civilian restraint.” The defense lawyers contended that Penny didn’t consistently apply enough pressure to kill Neely, and they brought their own forensic pathologist to the stand to buttress their claim.

Contradicting a city medical examiner’s finding, the defense pathologist said Neely died not from the chokehold but from the combined effects of K2, schizophrenia, his struggle and restraint, and a blood condition that can lead to fatal complications during exertion.

Penny did not testify, but several of his relatives, friends and fellow Marines did — describing him as an upstanding, patriotic and empathetic man.

The manslaughter charge would have required proving a defendant recklessly caused another person’s death. Criminally negligent homicide involves engaging in serious “blameworthy conduct” while not perceiving such a risk.

While the criminal trial played out, Neely’s father filed a wrongful death suit against Penny.

Ukraine War

Russia has

used its

hypersonic Oreshnik missile

for the first time. What are its capabilities?

The silent black-and-white surveillance camera video of the Russian missile attack in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro was brief but chilling: Six huge fireballs pierced the darkness and slammed into the ground at astonishing speed.

Within hours of the Nov. 21 attack on the military facility, Russian President Vladimir Putin took the rare step of speaking on national TV to boast about the new, hypersonic missile. He warned the West that its next use could be against Ukraine’s NATO allies who allowed Kyiv to use their longer-range missiles to strike inside Russia.

Putin said the missile was called the “Oreshnik” — Russian for “hazelnut tree.”

A look at the weapon, how it fits into Moscow’s battle plan and what political message Russia wants to send by using it:

What’s known about the Oreshnik?

A satisfied smile played across Putin’s face as he described how the Oreshnik streaks to its target at 10 times the speed of sound, or Mach 10, “like a meteorite,” and claimed it was immune to any missile defense system. Ukrainian military officials said it reached Mach 11.

Gen. Sergei Karakayev, head of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, said the Oreshnik could carry nuclear or conventional warheads and has a range to reach any European target.

The Pentagon said the Oreshnik was an experimental type of intermediate-range ballistic missile, or IRBM, based on Russia’s RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM. The attack marked the first time such a weapon was used in a war.

Intermediate-range missiles can fly between 500 to 5,500 kilometers (310 to 3,400 miles). Such weapons were banned under a Soviet-era treaty that Washington and Moscow abandoned in 2019.

Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate said the missile had six warheads, each carrying six submunitions. Its payload of independently targetable warheads, like a cluster of hazelnuts growing on a tree, could be the inspiration for the missile’s name.

Video of the attack appeared to show six warheads surrounded by clouds of plasma raining down in a fiery descent. The six submunitions released by each warhead apparently were unarmed but had high kinetic energy estimated to deliver a destructive force equivalent to tons of explosives.

Putin claimed the weapon is so powerful that using several such missiles —

even fitted with conventional warheads — could be as devastating as a nuclear strike. It’s capable of destroying underground bunkers “three, four or more floors down,” he boasted, threatening to use it against the government district in Kyiv.

Ukraine’s Security Service showed The Associated Press wreckage of the missile -- charred, mangled wires and an ashen airframe — at Dnipro’s Pivdenmash plant that built missiles when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. There were no fatalities in the attack, and authorities haven’t described the damage to the plant. They said the missile was fired from the 4th Missile Test Range of Kapustin Yar in Russia’s Astrakhan region on the Caspian Sea.

What other missiles has Russia used?

Russia has used an assortment of missiles to pummel Ukraine since the start of its invasion in February 2022, but none had the range and power of Oreshnik.

They included subsonic long-range cruise missiles that carry about 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) of explosives, enough to inflict a significant damage to Ukrainian power plants and other key infrastructure. The winged, jet-propelled cruise missiles have a range of up to 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles), able to reach all of Ukraine.

Russia also used swarms of inexpensive, Iranian-designed drones that carry only about 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of explosives. The slow-flying drones are relatively easy to intercept, but Russia used dozens of them at a time to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses and divert attention from simultaneously launched cruise missiles.

For some priority targets, Russia has used faster and harder-hitting missiles, including the ground-launched Iskander short-range ballistic missile with a range of 500 kilometers (310 miles).

For particularly important targets, Moscow has used the hypersonic Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missile. Its high speed — able to briefly reach Mach 10 — and ability to maneuver in flight helps it evade air defenses, although Ukraine claims to have shot down a few of them. Oreshnik is even more difficult to intercept than Kinzhal. It can inflict significantly heavier damage because of its multiple high-energy warheads.

What message is Putin sending with the Oreshnik?

Putin described the Oreshnik as a

response to the U.S. and U.K. allowing Ukraine to use their longer-range weapons to strike Russian territory, a move he said gave “elements of a global character” to the conflict.

“We believe that we have the right to use our weapons against military facilities of the countries that allow to use their weapons against our facilities,” he said.

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Putin’s Security Council, said Oreshnik could reach targets in Europe within minutes, inflicting “catastrophic” damage. “Bomb shelters will not save you,” he posted on his messaging app channel.

Russian state media extolled the Oreshnik, claiming it will take just 11 minutes to reach an air base in Poland and 17 minutes to reach NATO’s headquarters in Brussels. T-shirts have appeared with images of Putin and the Oreshnik, and he was told at a briefing that a couple planned to name their daughter after the missile.

Military expert Mathieu Boulègue of Chatham House in Britain said that while the Oreshnik isn’t a game-changer on the battlefield, “in terms of psychological warfare, it works great” in serving the Kremlin’s goal to scare a Western audience.

The Nov. 21 attack came two days after Putin signed a revised version of Russia’s nuclear doctrine, which lowered the threshold for using nuclear weapons. The doctrine allows for a potential nuclear response by Moscow even to a conventional attack on Russia by any nation that is supported by a nuclear power.

The use of the Oreshnik was an expression of Moscow’s anger at the use of longer-range Western missiles and a signal to Ukraine and President-elect Donald Trump that Russia was going to pursue its goals, regardless of the support for Kyiv, said James J. Townsend, senior fellow at the Center for New American Security.

“This is a very powerful message being sent,” Townsend said. “It’s showing Trump how serious Russia looks on what the Biden administration has been doing and how seriously they look on and how angry they are about this type of assistance.”

Putin’s warning about potential strikes on NATO assets follows calls by Russian hawks for such attacks to force Ukraine’s allies to back down.

Unlike other Russian conventional weapons with a shorter range, Oreshnik offers the capability to launch a powerful, conventional strike anywhere in Europe, giving the Kremlin a new instrument of escalation without tapping its nuclear arsenal. There will be no way to know whether Oreshnik carries a nuclear or a conventional warhead before it hits the target.

“The enemy must understand that we are ready to take the most resolute steps and strike the territory of NATO members with conventional weapons first,” said Sergei Karaganov, a political expert who advises the Kremlin. “At the same time, we will warn them that if they respond to that attack in an escalatory way, a nuclear strike would come second, and a third wave will target American bases.”

Initial approaches to fruit tree pruning in northern Illinois

Fruit tree pruning is almost possible in Northern Illinois. Once we reach the end of December and the trees have been in dormancy for some weeks, it’s now possible to prune your fruit trees. Apples, cherries, pears, plums, and peaches can be pruned until mid-March. I know many growers that wait until the end of January to begin but if you have a small orchard, you could go ahead and begin pruning in the next few weeks. If you are new to pruning, whether you’ve planted new trees in 2024 or inherited fruit trees, there are some basic approaches to consider.

Energy & Environment

A fruit tree planted since 2023 may not need to be pruned for 3-4 years. This goes against some of the guides you see that encourage extensive pruning early on and yet pruning is removing future fruit. Delaying extensive pruning for 3-4 years will not necessarily lead to long-term tree problems and you will get fruit sooner. What you should do these first 3-4 years is to work on training and getting the tree into the shape it needs to be. This is done via spreaders, weights, and other methods. Apples and pear trees should have a Christmas tree shape or central leader. Peaches, plums, and cherries do best with an open-center/vase shape.

Focus on bringing in sunlight. Any branches or shape that is leading to substantial shade is going to reduce your fruit load long-term. This may mean removing branches that are crossing or a dominant branch that shades many other branches. Vertical branches tend to dominant unpruned fruit trees. These branches cast shade and do not often have fruit on them.

You should only attempt to remove 30-40% of the branches each season. If you remove more than this, the tree may not successfully seal up the cuts you have made before it moves out of dormancy in spring. For young trees, 30-40% is

not much while a large tree may mean a lot of wood is being removed. I work with backyard growers that sometimes need more than 30-40%. If this is your situation, it may take 2-3 years to fully remove all the branches you need to. Fruit tree pruning is about acceptance. You can prune the right method and remove the correct branches but the tree is not always going to do what you want it to. If you’ve inherited 25-30 foot tall trees, it is probably unrealistic to expect to be pruning trees into shapes that they should be. I’ll discuss more fruit tree pruning next week. The evolving quest to secure arctic resources

As a family we spent part of the summer of 1969 in Quebec Canada while Bob attended a National Science Foundation seminar on the North American Arctic.

Historically there were repeated efforts by various interests to secure a sea route through the arctic known as the Northwest Passage. Establishing a shipping route would dramatically shorten the distance to ship to and from the North American continent and facilitate harvesting the potential resources from the area. During World War II U.S. and Canadian troops were trained to fight in arctic conditions in case a military invasion was launched on North America that passed through the arctic.

During the 1950s, the US and Canada established a line of radar stations in northern Alaska along the 55th parallel to provide an early warning system to detect a potential Soviet bombing invasion of Canada and the US passing over the Arctic. The early warning systems was modified over time and mostly abandoned as missiles replaced bombers and new technologies were developed to identify military threats passing over the arctic. There were also ongoing exploration efforts by naval military units and

private firms to locate energy resources oil, uranium and minerals useful for economic development and military purposes. Such efforts brought native populations in contact with workers with different lifestyles that appealed to some members of the native population weakening their culture.

The discovery of oil in the Prudhoe Bay area of Alaska in the 1960’s lead to the building of the Alaskan pipeline to bring oil to the North American market. An oil geologist who was involved in the arctic oil development had just returned home from the area. He made a presentation at the arctic seminar indicating that the rock formations under the arctic ice were similar to rock formations in which oil was frequently found. He was certain a substantial amount of oil lay under the arctic ice.

If an abundant amount oil and resources exists under the ice and can be harvested the next challenge is be able to transport them into the market. For example, an iron ore deposit in northern Quebec was highly concentration and could be directly feed into a steel mill avoiding the need to increase its density prior to its use. The lack of an ice free ocean shipping route to a steel mill was blocking the development of a mining operation.

Years later we met with the leader of

the Icelandic conservative party. He indicated that developing an ice free shipping route through the arctic would create an opportunity for Iceland to develop a port serving the ships using the route.

He added that all the coal burning occurring in China was releasing mercury into the sea and it was accumulating in the fish harvested by the Iceland fishing industry. If the level of mercury in fish became high enough to constitute a threat to human health it would adversely impact the fishing industry.

The exchange with the politician illustrates one aspect of the perceived benefits of developing a shipping route through the arctic. The melting of the arctic ice is expected to facilitate the development of the shipping routes and resource extraction. Denying the reality of climate change can divert public attention away from the adverse consequences of such development.

Years later the minority party leader in Iceland eagerly anticipated development of the Arctic as he envisioned Iceland’s becoming a service port for ocean shipping. He also claimed that Iceland’s reliance on the cod fishery was damaging the health of its people as burning coal in China released copper, producing rising mercury levels in ocean fish and5Iceland’s citizens.

The National Science Foundation course focused on the future of the oceans. Concerns included increasing intrusion of salt water into fresh water supplies along the east coast, the collapse of fish resources from over fishing and the growth of algal blooms along the coast from pollutants caused by sewage and urban and farm runoff. Attempts at restoring ocean food resources were increasingly threatened by intensive hurricanes destroying fish farms.

The course leader indicated his efforts at restoring estuary and ocean food populations were not very effective and that he should have focused on mineral and oil resource development which had a more promising future.

The anticipation of securing access to an abundance of resources stimulates can stimulate competition. A recent article by retired Air Marshal Anil Chopra,The Great Game in the Arctic: Why the region is the next flashpoint between superpowers provides a fuller description of the future of the Arctic, addressing interests and rivalries in establishing shipping lanes and developing Arctic resources.

If climate change continues to accelerate melting, diminishing ice would facilitate development of abundant arctic resources. Is calling global warming a hoax, providing a cover story for the future development of the arctic?

Griffin Museum of Science and Industry

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago’s Jackson Park has changed a lot since your school field trip 30 years ago. This year, celebrating its 90th anniversary, the museum was renamed for wealthy financier Ken Griffin in honor of his $125 million donation. It is the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere and is housed in what was the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition.

The Museum of Science and Industry was founded by Julius Rosenwald in 1933 as the first truly interactive museum in North America. The museum was inspired by the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany, which features buttons, levers, and pulleys that guests can operate to learn how things work.

You’ll find the Chicago museum to be an interesting mixture of old and new. While many old favorites are still there— the Illinois coal mine, the captured U-505 German submarine, the Foucault Pendulum, fairy castle, model railroad, whispering gallery, and Yesterday’s Main Street—you’ll find a radically changed building with many new exhibits.

The Henry Crown Space Center

features several spacecraft, including a SpaceX Dragon Capsule and the Apollo 8 Command Module. The space exhibit also offers advice on pursuing an aerospace career. The Blue Paradox discusses the oceans’ plastic crisis. Notes to Neurons illustrates the power of music in our lives.

You can stand in the vortex of a 40-foot tornado in the Science Storms exhibit.

Walking through the maze of mirrors is a fun, if dizzying diversion from serious science. You can also run in a humansized hamster wheel!

Much in the museum chronicles past scientific progress, but it also explores the future. The museum, at its best, makes learning about science and technology entertaining and fun. There is plenty for children to explore and absorb, but adults will remain interested as well. You will be tired before you run out of interesting things to see, and you can easily spend the day.

One of the most notable changes is the building. The museum has an underground parking garage and a new entrance. You now enter the museum one level below the old basement. The garage is connected to the museum entrance. If you are arriving at the museum by bus, taxi, or on foot, there is a ground-level

entrance in front of the north façade which connects to the lobby. The new subterranean lobby houses one of the first diesel-powered stainless-steel passenger trains, sporting the historic Burlington Railroad livery. The lobby contains a large gift shop and the ticketing area for the museum.

The Christmas season is a particularly good time to visit the museum. Since 1942, the museum has featured its traditional Christmas Around the World, symbolized by over 50 decorated Christmas trees decorated by volunteers. Each tree represents the celebration of Christmas or other Holidays of Light in a different country. Along with the Christmas trees, half-hourly scientific demonstrations of snow allow visitors to experience the magic of snowfall amid the Christmas trees.

Christmas Around the World runs through Monday, January 6.

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is located at 5700 South Lake Shore Drive. It is open daily from 9:30AM to 4PM. The website is at msichicago.org.

From North and West of Chicago, while there are several possible routes, taking public transit involves an inconvenient transfer in Downtown Chicago. We have

found the route with the least walking is to take the CTA Green Line to Garfield Boulevard, and the eastbound Route 55 CTA bus from there to the museum entrance. The Green Line El can be boarded at Clinton and Lake Streets, 2 blocks north of the Ogilvie Transportation Center.

We suspect most visitors will find driving to the museum more convenient, and, for families, more economical. The best way to reach the museum by car is to take Interstate 90 to North Interstate 55 (the Stevenson Expressway) and exit at DuSable Lake Shore Drive South. Proceed South to 57th Street to the garage entrance.

The museum is a bit pricey to visit, particularly if you are on a budget. General admission for adults is $26. Several attractions, including timed tickets to the U-505 submarine ($12) and the coal mine ($9) are extra. Parking in the garage is $22. There are several ways to reduce the general admission charge, which include free museum admission for Illinois residents on select dates. For those of modest means who hold an EBT card, museum admission is free. Food service is available, or you are welcome to bring a picnic lunch.

Our experts handpicked this highly acclaimed collection to pair perfectly with your favorite dishes from Omaha Steaks. Uncork 12 bottles with bonus gifts for just $79.99 (plus $19.99 shipping and tax) as your introduction to the Omaha Steaks Wine Club – saving you $160.
