Jobless rate, labor force decrease in area By John Henderson Staff Writer
Unemployment numbers have significantly improved for the month of January in the Twin Counties over the same month last year. But officials said the unemployment numbers are not due to a significantly improving job market, but instead a drastic drop in the local labor force. On a positive note, there were 400 jobs added in the Twin Counties when comparing January of last year to the same month this year, according to Current Employment Statistics put out by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which surveys businesses and government agencies. However, the unemployment rate for the Rocky Mount Metropolitan area in January, at 10.3 percent, is still the highest of the state’s 14 metro areas. North Carolina’s statewide unemployment rate in January was 7 percent. The unemployment rate in Nash County in January was 9 percent, compared to 12.8 percent in January 2013. The unemployment rate in Edgecombe County was 12.5 percent in January of this year, compared to 16.6 percent in January 2013. Michael Walden, an economics professor at N.C. State University, said there could be many reasons why the labor force is shrinking in many North Carolina counties such as Nash and Edgecombe. “You have people who want to work but don’t have the right skills,” he said. “So we have a skills mismatch, and the economy is changing. As you well know, it takes more than a warm body willing to work. To get a job, you have to have skills. One problem is a fair number of people who don’t have the right skills tend to be male, especially young- and middle-aged males. They look for work for a while and say they can’t find anything. They go live with parents and somehow get by but stop looking for work – so they are not counted as unemployed.” And some of the people who dropped out of the labor force may be those who lost unemployment benefits over the summer, Walden said. On July 1, about 70,000 people stopped receiving extended federal unemployment benefits as a result of a state law. Those people were required to be looking for work to receive benefits, so they were counted in the labor force. But some of those people who have not been able to find work may have given up on that search when their unemployment checks stopped coming, Walden said. “The Rocky Mount area has been one of our areas, unfortunately, that has been lagging in job creation,” Walden said. “The

issue is your area has been traditionally big on agriculture and tobacco and textiles. The textile part has been traditionally labor intensive but has downsized dramatically.” He added that the Twin Counties employment numbers have not improved like some other areas of the state have, such as the Research Triangle. In Nash County, the labor force decreased by 3,794 when comparing January 2013 to January of this year. There were 1,724 fewer people employed when comparing the same months, and 2070 fewer people unemployed. In Edgecombe County, the labor force dropped by 2,154 people from January 2013 to January of this year. There were 853 fewer people employed when comparing the same months in Edgecombe County, and 1,301 fewer people unemployed. “So there is a significant drop in the number of people unemployed, so those are really your folks leaving the labor market,” said Larry Parker, a spokesman for the N.C. Department of Commerce Labor & Economic Analysis Division. “Your labor force, divided by the number of unemployed, is your unemployment rate. You’ve lost some folks in the labor force mainly out of the unemployed side of things, and that has pulled down your rate.”

Steps first-time job seekers can take to prepare for their professional lives Though things have improved in the last few years, recent college graduates still face an uphill battle when beginning their professional careers. Standing out in a crowded pool of applicants isn’t easy, but first-time job seekers must find a way to do just that. But preparing for a professional career begins long before men and women send out their first resumes. The following are a few steps firsttime job seekers can take to ensure their transition from student to professional goes as smoothly as possible. ❱ Clean up your online presence. College is a carefree time for many students, but those fun times should not come to define your online presence. When preparing to enter the workforce, scrub your social media presence clean of anything that does not present you in a mature and positive light. Fair or unfair, photos from nights out on the town in college can damage your reputation and prevent hiring managers from considering your resume. Clean social media profiles of any information, be it photos, blog postings or musings on Twitter, that may leave companies questioning your judgment and maturity
level, and think twice before posting any such information in the future. ❱ Clean up your physical presence. Shoulder-length hair and a scruffy beard might have projected your desired image on campus, but such an image will rarely score you points in the business world. First impressions go a long way, and appearance can make or break a first impression. Even if a more conservative look is not your personal style, it’s the style many companies prefer. Men should project a polished look, including a nice suit, while women should wear appropriate office attire and avoid going overboard with makeup and jewelry. ❱ Do your homework. Just because college has ended doesn’t mean first-time job seekers no longer have home-

won’t stand out on a resume. If job offers are scarce, consider working free, offering your services to companies in your industry free of charge in an attempt to get your foot in the door. This may mean applying for an unpaid internship or simply writing hiring managers at certain companies and offering to come in a few days each week to get a feel for the industry and help in any way you can. Many professionals began their careers working for no money. This can ingratiate first-time job seekers with companies while providing them valuable experience that can help them stand out in a crowded pool of applicants. - Metro

3 Ridiculously Simple Things That Improve Your Job Search By Susan Riehle ll of the job searchers that I’ve talked to over the years, start their search with tremendous energy. They polish their resume. They hit the job boards, submitting dozens of resumes. Within about a month they hit a wall. They’ve run out of new jobs to submit a resume. They find themselves doubting themselves and their energy and confidence fall to new lows.
A
First ridiculously simple thing to do: Diagnose your job search. Are you getting called for interviews? If you are, but not getting offers, then work on your interview skills. If you aren’t getting calls, then set a timer for 15 seconds and look at your resume for only 15 seconds. Can you tell what you do? Can you see why someone would hire you? Can you tell why someone wouldn’t hire you? Its important that an employer find a reason to hire you in 15 seconds. Its also important that they don’t find a reason to not hire you in that 15 seconds. Second ridiculously simple thing to do: Turn your job search upside down. Stop applying to every company and every job. Target 5 companies you want to work for and use the internet and your network to identify what jobs you can do for them and who is the hiring decision maker for that jobs. Your
www.rockymounttelegram.com
goal then is to rewrite your resume to show how you fit that job exactly. Do this honestly, but structure your resume to exactly target that job with your skillset. Your goal is to be not just an expert, but to be the exact right expert for the job.
Third ridiculously simple thing to do: Fix your LinkedIn Profile. Make sure that you have work samples in it. Make sure that you have made connections to professional groups and contributed to those groups. Then start endorsing your colleagues for skillsets they have. Remember that most often when you endorse a colleague that person will endorse you for skills. In the least you will have reminded them about you. Link to people within the companies that you targeted in the ‘second simple thing’. Finally, a bonus step: Get business cards. Job seekers need cards more than employed workers. Use these cards to remind people that you are still looking for work. Make sure that your contact information is on the cards. Include email, phone, and LinkedIn network information on the cards. When networking, make it a practice of jotting a note on the back of your card before you hand it out. Job boards alone have about a 5% success rate of landing you a job. Networking has a 50% chance. Its not about sending dozen’s of resumes. Its about getting the right resume to the one right person. Artilce source: ezinearticles.com/?expert=Susan_Riehle

Social Media and Employment By Cias Hart
M
any people think of their social media as a reflection of who they are. That is true, but what people don’t realize is how much of themselves is out there for others to review. In the past, people put their best foot forward to their employers. There was little concern about their personal life coming to light, unless they brought their issues to work or got in trouble with the law. Today, the situation is completely different. Employees who are active in social media can expect their life to be laid bare to their current and potential employers. They must take care when posting things to the internet, and should avoid some key behaviors.
Red Flags
Recruiters specifically look for red flags that will disqualify a candidate from employment. Social media websites such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and others are reviewed. Many people have strict privacy settings; that’s a good thing. It’s an indication that the candidate does not carelessly throw their information onto the internet. It’s becoming rare, and is illegal in some places, but potential employers sometimes request viewing access to candidates’ social media pages. For that reason, even if your page is private, you should be cautious what you post and scrub it regularly. Actual disqualifiers are generally items which would cast doubt on the employee’s ability to perform their jobs, or something that would discredit or embarrass their employer. For example, many college graduates are surprised to discover that the pictures of themselves doing a keg stand prevented them from being hired at a firm. Overt, aggressive political or social stances can also be a negative. Nobody faults someone for having opinions, but those which are extreme or very loudly expressed can indicate that a candidate can’t leave their politics out of the workplace where they don’t belong. Offensive language especially that of a harassing nature, is an automatic disqualifier. A good rule of thumb is to look at a social
media page and read through it. Would you show your boss your page and read your posts to him? If you feel that he may be offended, you should remove those posts immediately and refrain from that type of online behavior in the future.
Scrubbing
If you realize that your social media may be potentially hazardous to your employment, you should “scrub” those pages. First, engage your privacy settings to the maximum level. On Facebook, this means preventing non-friends from viewing your profile. Ensure that your posts are only viewable by friends. For Twitter and other microblogging sites, lock your profile and ensure that you have to approve followers. Next, start scrolling through your posts, reading them for offensive or immature content. If in doubt, delete it. Remember that comments made on your posts are relevant as well. Next, go through your picture albums. If you can’t bring yourself to delete the pictures, save them to your computer or an external drive. Generally speaking, social pictures are fine, but if most of your pictures show you drinking or engaging in dangerous behavior, you should remove those pictures. Also, ensure your profile and cover photos are appropriate. You should feel free to express yourself, but you should also appear mature. A good picture might be you participating in a sport, whereas a bad picture would be one in which you are inebriated or holding an alcoholic drink. Job Search Techniques:
Is Your Job Search On-Target? By Susan Riehle
T
here are a lot of people looking for jobs. Many of them are applying for every and any job that they can find. But is this any way to conduct a job search? It certainly is a less effective way to conduct a job search. As job boards proliferate and every company in the world starts saying ‘apply online’, companies are inundated with lots of resumes to sift through. And if everyone is applying for jobs--any job--many of these resumes submitted online are just one more resume. Study after study shows that a job search technique that consists of firing off resumes to online submission sites is not the best job search technique. So how do you get your resume on the top of the stack? The key comes down to standing out. Less people apply through the mail. So do that. Job Search Tip #1: Apply to less jobs, but target them carefully. Your goal here is to be an expert, just the right type
of expert for the job. Spend more time on finding the right job, and less to applying for every job. You really want to find a position that you have a critical advantage to obtaining. This may be a special area of expertise, or special area of industry knowledge. An example of this may be an engineer who has specialized knowledge in antenna design. Tip #2: Be willing to adjust to the market and change your title, and career direction. Times have changed since you last were in a job search, even if that was 2 years ago. Job titles may have changed, so may the split of responsibilities. You can’t be stuck in the past, even if the title of your last job was more desirable or prestigious. Tip #3: Always be custommade for the job you apply for. Customize your resume and your cover letter to be only for the job you are applying for. What does this mean? Your ‘objective’ should have the exact title in the job posting. Look through the job posting and identify the exact
Be sure to keep this magazine on file. You never know when you will be in the job market and this section is packed with helpful information and employer contacts.
keywords used in the posting. Match your resume keywords to the posting keywords. Tip #4: Study the wording of the position and match it. Many job search candidates are not considered for jobs they are qualified for because of differences in terminology. If you have military experience, this is one of the best job search tips that you will find: reword your experience to match the style of wording in the job posting. If the job posting had a business style of job description, match it. If the job posting has a technical style, then match it. Tip #5: Research the hiring manager and reach out to him. (If there is a head hunter involved, research which head hunter has had the best history of getting people into a company and send a hard
copy of your resume to him). Make sure your cover letter is personalized. Even if you must also apply online, still send a hard copy. Also connect to the hiring manager in LinkedIn or through a professional organization. His association of your name with a professional affiliation site like LinkedIn can increase your memorability. Top job search techniques in this new market emphasize being the exact person for the job. Being the exact person means you know the industry and the people and you have precisely the right skillset. In many cases that’s simply a matter of proving that your skills are a match to the right people. Article source: ezinearticles.com/?expert=Susan_Riehle.

How to give your resume a facelift
T
he process of finding a new job has changed dramatically. Whereas professionals once printed their resumes and mailed them to hiring managers in response to job postings, nowadays resumes and cover letters are largely uploaded via the Internet or emailed directly to a company’s human resources department. But how resumes are sent is not the only adjustment job seekers must make. Resumes themselves have changed as well, and professionals looking for a new job might want to tweak their existing resumes to increase their chances of finding a new job. O Show accomplishments rather than responsibilities. Many hiring managers are experienced enough to know the responsibilities of a certain job title. So instead of listing your responsibilities as a Regional Sales Manager, list what you accomplished during your time in that position. Be as specific as possible, listing any sales goals you exceeded and awards you might have won. Your achievements are what set you apart from other candidates with similar work histories, so use it. O Keep things brief. Brevity should be your friend when accentuating your accomplishments on your resume. Your resume should highlight those accomplishments and that should be enough to secure an interview. When you get that interview, that’s when you can go into greater detail. But try to keep your resume to one or two pages. O Remove outdated older positions. Older positions, such as a longago college internship, have
no place on a seasoned professional’s resume. On a similar note, if you have long since changed careers, you may not need to include much about your previous positions in another field, especially if your work experience in your new field is extensive. Hiring managers likely won’t be interested in a past work history if it’s irrelevant to your current field. O Consider a using a new format. Few job postings request applicants to send in their resumes via snail mail, so unlike the days of old, you probably won’t be printing your resume as a Microsoft(R) Word document and mailing it to prospective employers. As a result, you might want to consider a

Many professionals are initially hesitant to upload their resumes to a business networking site such as LinkedIn(R) out of fear that their current employers will feel they are looking for a new job. But so many professionals are now members of such sites that it’s no longer associated with a job search as much as it is an easy way to keep in touch with professional contacts. Where are the high paying jobs? Six of the 10 college majors with the highest salaries for new graduates have something to do with engineering. So says a survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which notes that computer engineering majors earned the top spot with an average starting salary of $70,400 for graduates who finished school in 2012. Chemical engineering majors came in second with an average starting salary of $66,4000, while computer science majors, with average starting salaries of $64,400, came in third. The NACE salary survey relied on information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the United States Census Bureau and Job Search Intelligence, a compensation management firm. In addition to computer science, the survey, which examined starting salaries for new graduates in more than 90 fields of study, found that finance, construction science/management and information sciences and systems were the only majors outside the field of engineering to crack the top 10. - Metro

How To Get a Job When You Have No Experience By Kamal Deep Chandel
Every job posting seems to end the same way. “Experience necessary.” “Experience preferred.” Some of them even say, “5+ years experience.” Many recent graduates are facing the same conundrum: How do you get experience if you have never had a job? How do you get a job with no experience? There are two ways to work around this dilemma. The first is to focus on things you have done and show how they translate into work experience. The second is to do more things to create more work experience. Unless you have been living under a rock for the last several years, you have done things that can be called experience. Any clubs, organizations, or activities you have participated in can be considered experience. Try to highlight any of the accomplishments these types of groups
have had, even if you did them as a team. Fundraising, recruiting new members, presenting ideas to other people all can be considered work experience. Even babysitting family members, helping neighbors, or volunteering in groups can be considered experience. You simply need to tailor these experiences to meet the needs of the job posting you are applying for. Ask employers for informational interviews. Many working professionals are willing to share their experiences and help young people get started in the field. They can give you direction on how to gain the necessary experience. Be sure to attend any job fairs and take advantage of career centers that your county maintains. Join professional organizations and network with as many people in your area of interest as possible. You never know who you might impress or who may provide that first job opportunity.
Consider joining the Peace Corp, looking at internships, or study abroad opportunities. These can be life changing experiences that open the doors for many job opportunities. While you are building a resume, you will also be making a contribution to the world and learning about yourself and your abilities in ways that you could never do from the comfort of your home. Although these are usually considered volunteer positions, you may be given room and board and a monthly expense allowance. You will gain experience and skills in ways that are not possible at home and make connections with people that can last a lifetime. Gaining experience and building a resume is certainly a challenge for most people just starting out in the work force. With some creativity and perseverance, it can be done. Tips for Turning Job Internships Into Careers By Todd B Bavol Job internships are an opportunity for you to gain all important job experience. By all manners, then, this is an area you need to focus on, getting that work experience so that when you apply to jobs in the field, you have it to fall back on. If you like your job internship, though, you may want to hold onto it and potentially move it towards a career path for you. In some instances, companies are very upfront about not allowing job internships to become full careers. In others, there are no rules and the opportunities are there for you. #1 - Let Them Know One of the first things to do is to be sure the human resource department knows you enjoy your position and would like to remain on full time after the job internship is over. If you do not tell them you want to stay, it is unlikely they will encourage this. Do not wait for a hiring manager to come to you and ask you about an open position. Inquire directly with them about the availability of the position. #2 - Stand Out You do not want to be the annoying person who asks too many questions. However, you should show interest in virtually everything that you do with the company. For example, you may want to learn why something is done. Rather than just learning how it is done, find out why. You may want to go above and beyond and impress the person you are working with directly.
Instead of accomplishing the task to average standards in four hours, aim for higher standards in half the time. #3 - Be Valuable To get job internships to provide you with more opportunities and a long career path, you have to stand out as a valuable component to the organization. That is not always easy to do in a large organization, but it is ideal in a small company. Have a great idea. Solve the company’s problem. Offer solutions to concerns and needs. Cut the company’s costs. Find a way to increase customers. By being valuable, you become worth too much to let go. Job internships are more than just opportunities to gain work experience and job skills. They could be your future career path. However, this can only happen if you work hard towards this goal with every day’s work tasks. Stand out in some way and show that you are valuable. Chamber summit focuses on manufacturing By John Henderson Staff Writer People once again landing jobs in manufacturing might be one of the many ways Rocky Mount’s economy can make a resurgence. The idea was among those discussed at the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Economic Summit” on April 1 at Benvenue Country Club. Manufacturing, particularly by smaller companies, is rebounding throughout the state, but people either don’t have the skills to land the jobs or aren’t interested in them, said Anita Brown-Graham, director of the Institute for Emerging Issues at N.C. State University. Graham worked at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s Institute of Government for 13 years, training communities in strategic planning to revitalize their distressed rural communities. She said many people are not aware of how big of a role manufacturing is playing in the state’s economy, with the state being the fourth most manufacturing-intensive in the country. “It continues to be the driver of North Carolina’s economy,” she said. “Here I was going county to county talking to manufacturers – and almost without exception, they were all saying, ‘We have opportunities (to hire) but we can’t find workers.’ It seemed sort of surreal, to tell you the truth.” She said people who live in communities that were ravaged economically by major manufacturing plant closings in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s didn’t seem interested in even talking about taking jobs in manufacturing. “Many of those people didn’t want to hear about a resurgence of manufacturing,” she said. “And quite frankly, they weren’t all that interested in
encouraging their children to participate in a resurgence of manufacturing.” Excellent teachers also have a profound effect on the economies of North Carolina communities and the earning power of people who live in them, she said. “There is a difference between a great teacher and a not-so-good teacher, and the difference is an economic one,” she said. Brian Hamilton, chairman and co-founder of a company called Sageworks, said the key to economic vitality is supporting private companies. He said there are good business people in the United States. “That comes from private companies, entrepreneurs, people running businesses,” he said. He added that many times
those are small businesses. “Everything that we do has got to be (revolving) around those people who are running private companies – what is good for them and what is not so good for them – because they operate under incredibly challenging circumstances,” Hamilton said. He said the national recession has seemed to be lagging, which concerns him. “The type of discourse in this country has got to be changed where our elected officials can work together collectively to solve the problems. We want people working. We want people getting good quality jobs,” he said. He said private companies need certainties about costs such as health care or taxes over the next year before they hire, and that is difficult with
the current state of political bickering. “It’s a challenge to all of us,” he said. “We can blame Washingtion as much as we want. But the fact is, we elect them, right? So it’s a challenge for all of us to push these guys to get issues resolved more quickly, just so these private companies know what is going to happen.” Mark Little, director of the N.C. Strategic Economic Growth Initiative at UNC Kenan-Flager Business School, said there is a new program at the business school where students getting their masters in business are working to help businesses in Eastern North Carolina. “Businesses range all the way from a multi-million dollar company making paper products all the way down to a coffee shop,” he said.

How to get noticed in a crowded job market
F
inding a new job is never an easy task. That task grew even more difficult over the last half decade, when a struggling economy forced many companies to lay off workers and institute hiring freezes. As a result, unemployment numbers rose, and many out-ofwork men and women found themselves searching for ways to stand out among a crowded pool of applicants. Standing out in a crowded job market has always been tough, but many professionals find it even more difficult to get noticed now, when many companies request prospective employees apply for job postings via the Internet. That process can be frustrating, as even the most qualified applicants can easily get lost among the myriad of workers all applying for the same position. But as daunting as finding a new job may seem to those looking for work, there are ways to stand out among the masses.
Go the extra mile
Many online job postings provide a link or an email address where applicants can fill out an application or send their resumes. This is a necessary step, and applicants should follow the directions in the posting. But applicants who really want to get noticed can take the extra step of finding the contact information for the company’s hiring manager and sending their resume directly to that person’s email address. Include the title of the position you’re applying for in the subject line of your email, and cut and paste your cover letter into the body of the email. In addition to sending your email to the company’s
that’s easy to download and unlikely to scramble.
Beware of hyperlinks
Standing out in a crowded job is rarely easy. But savvy professionals can employ a few tricks of the trade to stand out as they search for their next jobs.
hiring manager, consider CC’ing the person who might be your boss if you were to get the position.
Tighten things up
Your resume should reflect your work experience, but you want to focus primarily on the experience and skills that are relevant to the position. You can list past positions or internships you’ve had, but keep the synopsis of those positions brief if they bear little relevance to the position for which you’re applying. The main focus of your resume should be the things you have done in the past that make you the best candidate for this job. This might change as you apply for various positions, but tailor each resume to each specific position.
Make your resume download-friendly
Applying for positions but getting little response despite your qualifications? Chances are your resume might not be download-friendly. Bullet points and boxes might look good to you, but if the hiring manager on the receiving end of your resume does not have the same version of the program you’re using, that resume might look like a scrambled mess by the time the it’s downloaded. In such instances your resume is almost certain to end up in the scrap heap, no matter how qualified you might be. When uploading your resume to a company Web site or emailing it to a hiring manager, choose a format they can easily download. A PDF, for example, is a format
Adding hyperlinks to a resume can be hit or miss. When it’s a hit, a hiring manager can click on a link in your resume and be taken directly to samples of your work. However, if you’re asked to submit your resume via an online application instead of sending it directly to a hiring manager’s email address, then those same hyperlinks might be relegating your application to the trash bin before it’s ever seen. That’s because the database may be programmed to associate any documents with hyperlinks as spam, in which case the hiring manager will never see your application or resume. Hyperlinks can be useful and help you stand out, but only when they’re employed under the right circumstances.
Include social media profiles
More and more companies want employees who are familiar with social media, which can work to an applicants’ advantage or prove detrimental. If you have been responsible regarding your use of social media, conducting yourself in a professional matter and even benefitting your existing employer, by all means share these profiles with potential employers. But if you have traditionally used social media purely as a social tool and not in a professional manner, then it bears little relevance to your job search and likely won’t help you stand out for the right reasons. - Metro

Crafting an effective cover letter A strong cover letter may not guarantee you land a good job, but a poor cover letter may guarantee you won’t. On its own, an effective cover letter can catch the eye of hiring managers tasked with finding worthy candidates among stacks of applications, while a poor cover letter may ensure hiring managers never even glance at an applicant’s resume. An effective cover letter should be concise, conveying an applicant’s work history and goals in a few paragraphs or less. The following are some additional ways men and women can craft effective cover letters. O Address a specific person when possible. When responding to a job posting that listed a specific contact, address your cover letter to that person rather than beginning the letter with, “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To Whom It May Concern.” Personalize each cover letter you write so the hiring manager does not get the feeling that you are sending out cover letters en masse. Make sure names are spelled correctly and job titles are accurate. O State your purpose early on. The purpose of your letter, which is to state the job you’re seeking, should be made clear early on. Hiring managers often handle the vetting process for a host of positions at their companies, so the earlier the hiring manager knows which position you’re applying for the better. Hiring managers may become frustrated when applicants don’t make their intentions clear or do so in the final paragraph instead of the first.
O Explain why you are a qualified candidate. While it’s good to note your work history, your resume will do the bulk of that legwork. A cover letter is your opportunity to show how your work history makes you a qualified candidate for a specific position. Remember to be concise but relate a specific example that illustrates how your work history would help you thrive in the position for which you’re applying. O Exhibit some knowledge about the company. An effective cover letter should help you stand out among your fellow applicants, and expressing some knowledge about the organization can do just that. The goal here is to illustrate how you and the organization are a good fit, so you don’t need to go overboard or be too specific. But hiring managers are likely to be more impressed by applicants who do their homework and show a knowledge of the company than applicants who submit a form cover letter where the company is scarcely mentioned. O Be cordial in your closing. A cover letter should close with a cordial request for an interview or a friendly way of indicating you look forward to a company’s response to your application. In addition, thank the reader for his or her time and mention you would be delighted to answer any questions he or she may have. An effective cover letter can go a long way toward making a strong first impression on a prospective employer. Men and women should look at their cover letters as their first opportunities to connect with a company and write their letters accordingly. - Metro
