Rainn Wilson’s new series character may mirror some of his traits from “The Office,� but he insists he isn’t playing Dwight Schrute again. The actor planned on a longer break from weekly television work after nine seasons, but he says he “knew he had to do� the part of the eccentric but effective title detective in “Backstrom.� Developed by “Bones� creator Hart Hanson from Leif G.W. Persson’s series of Swedish mystery novels, the Fox series premieres Thursday, Jan. 22. Portland, Ore., is the locale where self-described “paranoid psychopath� Everett Backstrom is back on the job after a five-year break, joining a Special Crimes Unit but still offending virtually everyone. “In the ‘50s and early ’60s,� the friendly Wilson reflects, “the heroes were all lanternState Lic. # 18244

jawed, silent types you could really root for. Then in the ‘70s, heroes were played by people like Alan Alda and Elliott Gould as deeply flawed. “In the ‘80s, we had the Tom Sellecks, but now it’s swung back around, which is what Hollywood does. It’s more back to antiheroes, and Backstrom is a classic one. says. “I didn’t want to do a role that was hyper-serious, because it didn’t make sense for me as an actor. And also for my fans. I hope audiences will be open to me in different roles, especially all those amazing and loyal ‘Office’ fans who stuck with the show for so long.� “Backstrom� originally was intended for CBS for the 2013-14 season. When that network ultimately passed and Fox picked it up, the additional one-year delay suited Wilson fine. “It actually worked out perfectly for me,� he recalls, “because when we started shooting the first season, it was a little over a year from when I finished ‘The Office.’ I had a nice break; I got to spend time with my family, and I started writing a book that I’m almost done with.�

Show,” “America’s Next Great Restaurant,” “The Biggest Loser,” “Around the World in 80 Plates” and “MasterChef.”

• Curtis was 4 years old when he had his first truly memorable food experience. It was also around the age of 4 that he tried his hand at cooking. • He did an apprenticeship at the Savoy Hotel in Melbourne, Australia, and got his feet wet in the industry, once it was time to gain some work experience. • Looking for new challenges, Curtis headed to London, chasing a dream to work for Marco Pierre White, Britain’s most celebrated chef. He started working at the Grill Room (Cafe Royal) on the very same day he met Marco. • After 12 months, Marco opened a restaurant named Mirabelle. Curtis was made Chef de Partie for 6 months then promoted to Sous Chef there the year they won their first Michelin star. • One year later, Marco appointed Curtis Head Chef of Quo Vadis. The following year they were one of the only four Italian restaurants to receive three rosette awards. • He was at Quo Vadis when Curtis was approached by a publisher, who wanted to include him in a book about London’s finest chefs. • Following this, he got a call from an agent, did some morning television in the UK, and his world started to change. • Curtis was asked to co-host a show called “Surfing the Menu” with Ben O’Donoghue. In the show they traveled around Australia and met loads of passionate food producers and cooked their produce. • “Surfing the Menu” caught the eye of U.S. producers, which led to a gig on “Take Home Chef,” and subsequently a permanent move to the states. • Curtis is involved with SecondBite, Cottage by the Sea and Feeding America, all charities that help get food to the people who need it most.

One more ‘Night at the Museum’ offers fine fun

Anyone who saw either of the previous “Night at the Museum” movies must have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the third and final one. With that said, as third chapters go, “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” is a presentable closing act. One factor adds greatly to that, and one that couldn’t be anticipated when it was filmed: the last major screen performance by Robin Williams, reprising the role of Teddy Roosevelt. The movie isn’t all about him, of course, but Williams’ presence still loomed large in any film he was in. Here, he gets enough screen time where his entertainment value is sizable, yet there’s a subtext of sadness in the realization that the performer’s journey is completed by what’s on view here. Front-and-center again is Ben Stiller as Larry, who has gone from being a night watchman to running the whole show of evening security at the American Museum of Natural History. That still doesn’t mean the exhibits won’t develop lives of their own – if Larry is present, you can pretty much bank on that – and when they do that at a most inopportune time, he has to determine why. The search takes him in a trek to the British Museum, where an ancient tablet offers big clues. The site also introduces Larry to Sir Lancelot (“Downton Abbey” alum Dan Stevens) and an Egyptian pharaoh (Ben Kingsley), as well as to Larry’s opposite number in watching that place ... played to the hilt by the ever-brash Rebel Wilson, or to the degree she can do that in a family film, anyway.

Adrian Monk, “Monk” (USA Network, 2002-09) In terms of quirks per pound, nobody topped the set of neuroses owned by the detective played by the incomparably talented Tony Shalhoub in this cult hit that was a regular in the Emmy nominations. Adrian Monk suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder and multiple phobias that included germs, dentists, crowds, heights, sharp or pointed objects, milk and snakes, and had fixations on symmetry and a certain brand of bottled water. Rustin Cohle, “True Detective” (HBO, 2014-present) Unlike some of the other detectives on this list, the quirks of this character aren’t played for laughs. As portrayed by Matthew McConaughey, the haunted Cohle is dedicated to his work and carries an unusually large portfolio of case notes that earned him the nickname “the Tax Man.” But his daughter’s death has sapped all the pleasure from his life and has driven him to the bottle. Looking back over men’s tennis in recent years, it’s difficult to find a singles Grand Slam champ not named Nadal, Djokovic, Federer or Murray. In fact, from 2006 through 2013, only one who is not one of the “big four� has taken a title at Wimbledon and the Australian, French and U.S. Opens – Juan Martin del Potro at the ‘09 U.S. Open. But last year, that stranglehold on tennis’ biggest events began to loosen. Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka started off 2014 by winning at Melbourne, and Novak Djokovic Croatia’s Marin Cilic closed the Slam season by taking the trophy at Flushing Meadow. So as the 2015 season gets going in earnest Monday, Jan. 19, (on ESPN2), with the year’s first major, “the Aussie,� change could be in the air for the men. “I think the dominant years of the ‘big four,’ if not over, it’s transitioning to being over,� says ESPN tennis analyst Pam Shriver, who will be among those calling the action Down Under. “I would be really surprised if we didn’t have two more winners of majors from outside the ‘big four.’ I mean, is it possible for (Novak) Djokovic to win actually three out of four? Absolutely. I think he’s the only one I look at of the ‘big four’ and say he can dominate two or three of the majors if he had the year he had in 2011 or played the kind of determined tennis that he did. Not that he played great at Wimbledon but he sort of ended that streak of coming up short in major finals.� “I think that Stan’s win at the Australian Open kind of shook up men’s tennis, gave everybody around the top, say, 20 a little bit more belief.� So who could make a big run in ‘15? “I think the guys like (Grigor) Dimitrov, Milos Raonic, (Kei) Nishikori, no reason why Cilic,� Shriver says. “We’ll see how the two guys who won majors last year, if they have another strong year. (Tomas) Berdych, with his coaching change, he’d be a real surprise but he could get to another major final. “I just think the players have to have more belief, the players ranked in the slots, say, five (and lower),� she says. “They just have to have more belief than they did two, three, four years ago.�

In the world of collegiate sports, Notre Dame has always been a formidable force. That is no exception these days with its women’s college basketball team having another successful season. Although a national title has remained elusive since 2001– the Fighting Irish lost to UConn in the NCAA Final last season – hopes are high thanks in part to junior guard Jewell Loyd. After starting 35 games during her freshman year and 37 in her sophomore season, Loyd is Notre Dame’s top scorer and has been at or near the top 10 in scoring, averaging over 22 points per game through the early part of the season. Her efforts, and that of her teammates, once again have made Notre Dame one of the top-ranked teams in the country. They were second in scoring while among the league leaders in other categories such as rebounds, assists and field goal percentage. For Loyd and the Irish, the goal will be to hang tough until March and earn a high seed in the women’s Division I tournament. They’ve been to the Final Four each of past four seasons only to come up short, including three times in the championship game. Loyd’s been to two Final Fours and one championship game and shined during the 2014 tournament, nearly posting a double-double in a semifinal win over Maryland, which she followed up with consistent play, albeit a losing effort, in the title game.
