Winter Weddings There’s something about winter that adds an element of ‘magic’ to your wedding day. It’s an ambiance you can’t quite get during any other season. The snow falling down adds a dramatic look to any venue and offers a stunning backdrop for you and your guests. If you love the idea of winter, charm and fairytales, then a winter wedding could be the perfect choice for you. "There are so many moving parts around a wedding and every event of the day, but winter makes it all slow down. Your guests don’t wander off as much, and when everyone is eating dinner near candlelight, while everything outside sparkles with snow, you’ve got a perfect night on your hands.” - Devin Aho, Bride River Wild Photography winter wedding guide - rocky mountain bride / rockymountainbride.com

PLANNING

WINTER WEDDING ADVICE

ADVICE:

Saying ‘I Do’ in the winter can vary dramatically depending on where in the Rockies you pick. For some states, winter means cooler temperatures and for others it could mean inches of snow. Regardless of your destination, keep in mind a winter wedding doesn’t always need to pair with snow. Plus, you can’t rely on mother nature! There’s plenty of special touches you can only pull off during this time of the year - like decor, cozy wardrobes and being able to utilize seasonal floral and food. We’ve compiled tips and stories from bride’s and industry professionals who’ve planned and pulled off the ultimate winter wedding, to offer you guidance and inspiration for your big day!

WEATHER ROAD CLOSURES: Weather is at the top of the list when it comes to planning a winter wedding. Chances are you will experience cold weather or snow. Don’t sweat it, that’s the look you’re going for, right? Guests will expect cold weather but making them feel safe should be a top priority! Be sure to check for road closures the day before and day of your wedding, especially if your venue requires travel along busy interstates. It’s also helpful to include your local department of transportation’s info on your wedding website or invitation, so guests can easily access road closures and be up to date of any changes. If your ceremony and reception are at different venues, allow guests additional time to travel between.

“ 8

The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, plan to be flexible and know that it's a small price to pay to be in such an incredible setting. It’s definitely worth it.

rockymountainbride.com / rocky mountain bride - winter wedding guide

“Dress in layers! This goes for the couple and the photographer. For the couple: hand warmers and layers are your friend. Wearing a suit? Plan on wearing long underwear underneath it and plenty of wool socks. Wearing a long dress? Leggings, snow boots, and a coat to wear between shots. You can change out of your snow boots into pretty shoes before and after pictures,” Miranda Sylvester, Lemon and Honey Photos “For grooms, suit materials can be fairly thin so don't underestimate layering underneath too if you can! Of course, when you're moving from outdoor portraits back to indoors for your ceremony or reception, you won't want to wear all that extra clothing, so don't forget to factor in a few extra 15-30 minutes in your timeline so you can change/lighten your wedding wardrobe for the remainder of your celebration,” Laurie K Jensen Photography “Pop of color—you can get away with more color than you might at other times of the year in your outfit. P.S. a little red lipstick can be MAGIC! Keep your outfit practical (to a reasonable degree). I totally understand wanting to go epic, but if you do, do that outfit first and then switch into something else for the rest of the night,” Erin Wheat Photography

PLANNING

TIPS FOR OUT OF TOWNERS: There’s a chance weather could delay your out-of-town guests travel plans. You don’t want that impacting your wedding, so, it’s a good idea to suggest to your guests to fly out a day or two early just to be safe. You can also post on your website a list of fun activities or must-see’s in the nearby area to make the most of their extra time. If you're getting married at a mountain venue, remind guests they might need to rent a car to make it there.

FOOD & BEVERAGE: Ask your caterer or beverage vendor if they offer any seasonal menu options. Often times, they’ll be able to add unique touches to your plates or drinks. For dessert, you can opt to do a s'more station outside if your venue permits. When it comes to the drinks, you can play around with seasonal and warm choices like a peppermint schnapps or spiked cider.

ADVICE:

“One of my brides had the best ideas for her signature cocktails—each was a “usual” cocktail with a winter spin. One of her cocktails was a frosted cranberry margarita, another a pomegranate champagne spritz, and another was an old fashion with a twist.” Lemon and Honey Photos

WARDROBE - WHAT TO PACK: “We had all of the bridal party wear fur coats or stoles that allowed them to stay warm and provided an extra layer of texture to our looks! Plus everyone wore boots which definitely came in handy after stomping around in the snow for hours,” Rachel Melton. Brides or the entire bridal party can opt to wear cozy elements like shawls or fur to stay warm and play into the winter wedding feel. Long sleeve dresses made of unique materials like velvet or sequin are also a winter favorite! When it comes to your guests - let them know your dress code on your website or invitation so they can dress and pack accordingly. It’s also helpful to include if your ceremony is outdoors. If so, it’s a good idea to offer blankets, scarfs or hand warmers for your guests. Layers are your best friend no matter your role in the wedding and keep footwear in mind. It can be helpful to suggest to guests and your bridal party to forego open-toed shoes, especially if you’re expecting snow. Don’t forget about sunglasses, water and chapstick very important if you’re at high altitude!

PLANNING

decor: When it comes to decorating, embrace the beauty of mother nature. Play into your venue, weather and scenery. Think special decor like faux fur accents, cozy plaid blankets or romantic candles. Ask your florist about utilizing seasonal floral such as camellias, a white winter gem who’s petals are perfectly layered and bloom during early winter months. Hypericum berries are another winter wedding favorite. They provide a fun pop of color and texture and are showstoppers in boutonniere’s. ADVICE: “Winter wedding elements I have loved include flannel pajamas to get ready in (instead of satin robes); hot cocoa and coffee after the reception, instead of the usual coffee only; using local and seasonal foliage for floral arrangements only - uhm, hello pinecones.” Lemon and Honey Photos “Choose a location that best highlights the winter season! The mountains right after snowfall, Downtown’s Christmas twinkling lights, or a cozy stay in a photoshoot for engagement photos.” Tori Pena Photography

Taylor & Mason IDAHO

Taylor and Mason were introduced by mutual friends at a local bar. They spent that first night together connecting and dancing, but ultimately went their separate ways. Shortly after, they both were swiping through the Tinder app and stumbled upon each other. That’s when they knew it was a sign and they needed to see each other again. All it took was another date and they became hooked! After dating for a year and a half, Mason planned the ultimate surprise proposal.

PROPOSAL

UNWRAPPING A SURPRISE

When Idaho based photographer Lemon and Honey Photos asked the couple to model for her winter shoot, it sparked the beginning of a surprise proposal! They agreed to help and Mason realized it would be the perfect opportunity to propose. The session started on the shore of Payette Lake and moved to a spot just off the side of the road where the sun was peeking through the trees in a snow-filled forest. Taylor was told this was a Christmas content shoot and she needed to unwrap a gift for the photos. Layers of tissue and paper later, there was a little box, and that’s when Mason dropped to his knee and popped the question! Taylor said yes as Mason placed his grandmothers’ heirloom wedding ring on her finger. They celebrated with champagne and spent the rest of the evening at the Shore Lodge in McCall for more celebratory drinks.

ADVICE FROM PHOTOGRAPHER “Embrace the cold and know the pictures will be worth it! You want your winter wedding couples to still look comfortable and glowing, which means asking the caterers for some hot drinks to take with you outside, having extra hands to put jackets on the couple in between locations and shots, and immaculate family photo organization.”

Fernanda & Julio COLORADO

Fernanda and Julio’s love story began in college. They were initially good friends who spent all of their time together before later realizing their friendship had turned into something more. After dating for seven years, Julio planned a romantic winter getaway in Breckenridge. The couple lives in Mexico, but they both have a soft spot for the Mountains and Colorado. SURPRISES + SLEIGH RIDES The proposal and even the ring came together in just three days with the help of a dream team of vendors. Julio contacted Jes Tilton from Knotted Proposals to help pull off his winter inspired proposal. It had just snowed 24 inches and the fresh snow offered the perfect opportunity for a sleigh ride. Golden Horseshoe Sleigh Rides and Paige Weber photography teamed up on the surprise. Paige was disguised as an assistant when the couple arrived for what Fernanda thought was just a romantic ride. They rode through the snow covered White River National Forest before stopping to take a break during golden hour. That’s when Julio stepped down from the sleigh, reached into his pocket and dropped down to one knee. Fernanda was completely shocked and said ‘yes’! Paige Weber Photography captured the magical moment on the hills as the sun was shining down. It was a true winter wonderland that left everyone speechless! After the photos, they pulled off one more surprise. A canvas tent lit by two fireplaces was waiting for the couple, complete with champagne, custom glasses, flowers and more!

ENGAGEMENT

Brichon & Baxter UTAH

Brichon and Baxter couldn’t think of a better place to capture their love story than on the slopes. They met in second grade and Brichon always considered Baxter her childhood crush. Finally, after high school graduation and 10 years passed, Baxter asked for a date! The two quickly hit it off and Brichon ended up transferring to the University of Utah to be with her other half. She remembers quickly falling in love with the state, her Alma Matter and of course, Baxter. After dating for six years, Baxter knew it was time to pop the question. He decided to do it in Big Cottonwood Canyon, at one of their favorite hiking spots, Silver Lake. Brichon’s heart was pounding as Baxter got down on one knee and she said yes! Their favorite activity is skiing and spending time outdoors - which was the inspiration for their engagement shoot captured by With Megs Photography. The couple wanted to send family and friends a winter themed ‘save the date’ to not only get them excited for their wedding but also to encourage guests to hit the slopes with them before their big day. Allison & Slade WYOMING

Allison and Slade grew up in the same town but never connected until they attended the University of Wyoming together. A mutual friend introduced them, and after taking a long drive from Laramie to Riverton together, they knew they couldn’t last another minute apart. Just under two years later, Slade popped the question during a family photo session. His entire family was there and dressed up and when Allison and Slade went to take their couple photo, Slade got down on one knee and proposed. They took their engagement photos in December in the snowy Bighorn Mountains. Kaylie Sirek captured their cozy, winter shoot during golden hour amidst Wyoming’s beautiful mountain backdrop. ADVICE FROM PHOTOGRAPHER “When shooting engagement photos, pick a winter activity like ice skating, playing in the snow, snowmobiling, or snow shoeing to help keep you moving, which helps keep you warm. It’s also a great distraction from the cold and makes for really fun photos that are unique to you as a couple!”

ENGAGEMENT

Caroline & Daniel WYOMING

Caroline and Daniel’s love story began their junior year of college at the University of Arkansas. They were set up by mutual friends to attend a sorority formal together. They didn’t want to go into the event having never met, so they decided to go on a first date beforehand. That date quickly turned into five more before the actual event and the rest was history! They dated for almost four years before Daniel planned the perfect proposal during a weekend getaway in Austin, Texas. During a winery tour and tasting, Daniel pulled Caroline aside and got down on one knee and proposed. Caroline said yes and was even more surprised to see her close family pop out of the trees and congratulate them! They decided to take their engagement photos under the snowy Tetons near Jackson, Wyoming. It was snowing lightly during their shoot which made for even more magical photos. Erin Wheat captured the couples playful love story while they made the most of the weather, throwing snowballs and making snow angels. The couple is planning a late winter wedding for April 9th.

Kylee and Clay met their freshman year of college and never looked back! The two were introduced by a mutual friend and they became inseparable. Four years later, Clay knew it was time to propose. He popped the question at the Lantern Festival in New Mexico, which Kylee recalls as the most magical proposal she had always dreamed of. The couple opted for a cozy, indoor winter engagement session in December. Tori Pena Photography shot the couple at a local Airbnb where they utilized the indoors to pull off some unique winter themed photos. The couple had different charcuterie boards on display and to munch on while they cozied up on the couch and next to the fireplace. They even baked cookies together during their session, giving off a fun and charming vibe in the photos. Lauren & Pace COLORADO

It was a random sunny college game day when Lauren and Pace met at his fraternity house at Florida State University. The way Pace approached her is one of their favorite stories to share and laugh about. Lauren was alone in his backyard eating peanuts out of her purse and Pace found it amusing and adorable, and knew he had to talk to her. They instantly hit it off and started dating. After college, they lived in different cities in Florida before moving to Colorado to be closer to each other and the mountains. After dating for seven years, Pace planned the ultimate surprise proposal in Positano, Italy. Madison Hope photography shot their snowy engagement session in Idaho Springs in late October. Lauren and Pace love the outdoors and consider the mountains their second home, which is why the opted for an outdoor winter shoot. BRIDALS

Reagan + Ian

IDAHO

Reagan and Ian are college sweethearts who met while attending a Utah State University charity event. Reagan was volunteering and Ian was there as the school mascot, AKA Big Blue. Ian saw Reagan through his mask and thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world and had to get to know her. Before the event ended, Ian ran over and wrote his number on her hand. The next day they went on a date, even though she had never seen his face! Ian took Reagan to the basketball stadium and gave her the ultimate tour. They spent the rest of their first date in the box seats with snacks and music where they talked and laughed the night away. They would go on to date for a year before Ian planned the ultimate proposal. On a vacation in Florida with friends, he set up a scavenger hunt inside their hotel. Every clue included something Ian loved about Reagan. The hunt ended on the beach where he got down on one knee and asked Reagan to marry him. ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE “Keep it simple! This day is about you and your partner. Don’t make that get overshadowed by the flowers, dresses and desserts. Details are fun and exciting, but at the end of the day how you feel is what you’ll remember for the rest of your life so make sure you are focusing on how you feel rather than making sure everything is perfect.”

Snow Kisses MONTANA

The breathtaking mountain views that Little Belt Mountains boasts, inspired Jessica Billings Photography and other central Montana vendors to create this wintery, mountain chic inspired wedding. Their vision came to life at Showdown Montana, which is nestled in the heart of the state. The family-owned ski resort has been around since 1936 and offers some of the most beautiful backdrops for a winter wedding. The ski resort has 36 runs and you can choose between a mountain, deck or lodge setting for your wedding. The couple utilized Showdown’s chairlifts to take some cozy photos, which is something you can include in your wedding package there. Signage on the lifts designed by Hillary’s Wood and Vinyl added a unique and rustic touch to the decor.

INSPIRATION

EARTHY AND ELEGANT TONES Bloom and Bean floral helped bring this winter wedding to life by including pops of green and white seasonal floral in the bride’s bouquet and later displaying it in ski boots. The creative team focused on using neutral and earthy tones like green, navy and white. You’ll also notice cozy and unique winter elements such as the bride’s shaw and a Pendleton blanket, which added a pop of color and texture to the entire theme.

42

rockymountainbride.com / rocky mountain bride - winter wedding guide

TIPS FROM PHOTOGRAPHER “Having a jacket nearby, a wool blanket handy, or just some hand warmers while taking photos can make the experience much more enjoyable and allow you to warm up on the fly! Pendleton’s wool blankets are high quality and have beautiful patterns you can get that compliment your wedding colors.” winter wedding guide - rocky mountain bride / rockymountainbride.com

INSPIRATION

SWEET TOUCHES Cakes for Thought created the elegant cake inspired by the natural beauty of Montana and the venue. They used pops of greenery and local floral and tied together the detail of the cake with hints of gold flakes to give it a little flare. The pine cones also gave the cake an organic touch that perfectly fit with the season. It was displayed on a round tree plaque to tie the entire piece together. “Presentation is key but the taste is everything. So I chose a light elegant champagne flavor to compliment the simplicity of the wedding theme. A light flavor not too heavy for the bride of course,” Hana Maunu, Cakes For Thought.

REAL WEDDING

Devin & James COLORADO

Devin and James are college sweethearts who met at the University of New Mexico. They both had busy lives outside of school, James played football and Devin worked full-time, but they managed to cross paths a few times at social events. One semester, they ended up in the same class and sparked a connection. All it took was one date at their favorite Mexican restaurant in Albuquerque to realize they were a perfect match, and have been inseparable since! They had been dating for eight years and while James was away for US Army Reserves training, he knew it was time to propose. He wrote Devin a letter everyday he was away and upon returning home he took her to Red Rocks on a sunny Sunday morning. He got down and pretended to take a family photo with their dogs, but instead popped the question. Completely shocked, Devin cried, “Yes!” They planned a warm and romantic wedding for October 20th.

EMBRACING THE SNOW The couple was planning on having a late fall wedding, but mother nature had other plans in mind. Their venue was hit with 8 inches of snow and quickly turned into a winter wonderland. Instead of changing plans, they made the most of it and embraced the weather. They were even able to accommodate their guests in unique ways.

“It started to snow again right before the ceremony but we went with it! Right before I walked down the aisle our wedding coordinator said “go get your husband” and I swear those words kept me from feeling any cold. If you remember why you’re there in the first place, nothing else matters. We had blankets set out on the seats for our ceremony and picked appetizers like tomato soup and grilled cheese shooters – perfect for colder weather! Our blankets doubled as favors for guests to take home and the ones we had left over we donated to a local animal shelter.”

ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE “Enjoy the moment every chance you get. If you decide to do your own planning, don’t get lost in the details and don’t limit a winter wedding to only winter ideas. I think our mixture of green and white flowers, neutral-colored tablecloths, and summer time market lights all complimented each other even though those aren’t typically associated with winter. And if you’re lucky like us and get real winter weather.”

FAIRYTALE CEREMONY Guests were greeted by fresh, powdery snow and seated inside what looked like a true winter wonderland. During the ceremony, Rachel took a horse drawn carriage through the snow with her kids, who walked her down the aisle. It made for a truly spectacular moment she say’s she’ll never forget. After the ceremony, the newlyweds took off in horse drawn sleds and were off to the reception! Their design was inspired by winter and had a cozy alpine vibe to it. They used rich neutral blooms, accented with textured grasses and greenery with pops of crimson for color.

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “Trust your planner! Our planner, Layne Kula of Penny Layne, was amazing and she had so many special ideas and detailed elements that went into making the winter wedding theme feel special. There really is something so special about a winter wedding -- it forces everyone to get closer and cozy up by the fire to keep warm, and that’s really when the magic happens. In addition, we opted to forego a larger wedding for a more intimate dinner party where we could break bread for the first time as husband and wife and share a long evening of good food, great drinks, and wonderful conversation.”

PLANNING

elopement checklist Planning a winter elopement in the Rockies? Let’s get to it!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO ELOPE IN THE WINTER? If you’re going for a snowy look, opt for the months when your destination almost guaranteers winter weather. November through April offer some of the snowiest months for most states!

THE PERKS OF WINTER ELOPEMENTS MORE VENDORS AVAILABLE: Many of the best elopement vendors are fully booked during peak wedding season. With a winter elopement, you’ll have more vendors to choose from.

EASIER RESERVATIONS If you’re looking to reserve a ceremony site, or even book an Airbnb, you’ll have a much easier time getting the date and location you want if you elope during winter.

MAKE A VACATION OF IT You’re getting married! If you’re getting married on or near the slopes, make a weekend out of it! Build in a couple of days before and after your elopement day. Make sure that you have at least one weekday in your destination so that you can pick up your marriage license. If you can, give yourselves at least two days to acclimate if you’re coming from sea level.

WHAT TO WEAR Even if its just you and your significant other, make sure to pack and dress in layers! Weather is unpredictable during the winter and it’s important to be prepared. Pack extra blankets, coats and hand warmers and take breaks between photos and warm up inside!

PLANNING

Accessories 101 Blanket Shoes Backpack Flowers Hat Jacket Dog Jewelry

Whether it’s winter or springtime, hiking up any sort of elevation can warrant weather that requires a blanket. Plus, it’s always a cute prop for snuggling up with your significant other for photos.

While heels are cute for an indoor wedding ceremony, they’re not really practical for an outdoor elopement. White combat boots from Böhme are the perfect choice. Trendy, yet supportive for any sort of hike you have planned.

A backpack is a must. Snag a cute forest green Topo Designs sack for carrying anything you need for the day like your blanket, makeup for touch-ups, water, snacks, and more.

Just because you’re eloping, doesn’t mean a bouquet is out the window. A bouquet is a great way to dress up your backpack during action shots as well a great way to bring in traditional wedding details.

If it gets windy, a hat from Gigi Pip is the perfect way to hide any flyaways. Plus, they’re a super cute accessory.

A jacket is a fun way to show off your personality while adding some extra warmth. The options are endless. Choose a sweater or opt for a fun custom designed leather or denim jacket.

The great thing about eloping is that most likely you’ll be able to include your best furry friend. While some National Parks don’t allow pets outside of the main areas, others do, so be sure to double check first. Dress them up and buy them a coordinating bow tie from The Foggy Dog so they’re ready for your special day.

No matter how big or small your I do day is, you can never have enough sparkle.

Aubree & Jake COLORADO

Eight years of friendship, filled with impromptu beers and rainy day bowling competitions, laid the foundation for a romance, neither Jake or Aubree could deny. The two were introduced through Jake’s father, who frequented the restaurant Aubree worked at through college. They became good friends and shared a bucket list of adventure together. After getting scuba certified and going skydiving, they took another leap and became a couple. Three years later, Jake planned the ultimate surprise proposal during a family trip to Italy. The two were walking through the picturesque San Felice vineyard in Tuscany when Jake took a knee under a beautiful grapevine tunnel and popped the question. Aubree, shocked, said yes! Both of their families had no idea it was happening and were just as surprised and excited as her. The couple planned an effortlessly classic and minimally boho elopement at Bear Lake and Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.

ELOPEMENT

HIGHLIGHTS “We had to adapt to a sudden snowstorm which meant purchasing boots the day before our ceremony and also pushing our ceremony by a day. The beauty of eloping with just the two of us was that we could make that change last minute completely stress-free. Performing our own ceremony without a witness was such an intimate experience. It was definitely the highlight of our ceremony and the backdrop of the lake reflecting snow-covered trees and mountains didn’t hurt.”

Jessica & Matthew COLORADO

Jessica and Matthew met the modern way of dating, using the app Bumble! They had their first date at the Hornet, a restaurant in Denver’s historic south broadway district. Upon meeting, they had a spark and began dating shortly after. Almost three years later, Matthew planned an intimate and romantic proposal during their camping trip at Wellington Lake. One night, while they were sitting around the fire, Matt popped the question and Jessica said yes! Their love for the outdoors and skiing inspired them to plan a mountain chic elopement for December 12th.

ELOPEMENT

SIMPLE AND SWEET

The couple planned an intimate ceremony for just them and their dog Plum, who was also the dog of honor and walked Jessica down the aisle. He even signed his paw print as their witness. They said ‘I do’ under the snowy skies of Breckenridge as the mountains peeked out in the distance. One of their favorite memories was writing their vows and reciting their promises to each other. Their celebration continued with champagne and cake with their families over Zoom. Their elopement wrapped up with an extended stay in Breckenridge for some skiing and relaxing.

ADVICE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER “Stay flexible! Oftentimes you don't know what your weather is going to look like in the winter. Nobody tends to look super effortless in blizzard conditions so it helps to have a place to go warm up and take a moment out of the elements when you are shooting in the winter. I've even had some brides bring hand warmer pads and put them on their body under their dresses! It's all about taking breaks when you need to between events to make sure that everyone is comfortable as the day goes on.”

VOW RENEWAL

VOW RENEWAL

ADVICE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER “Think outside the box, a small campfire to make cocoa, snowshoeing, have a snowball fight, go sledding, etc. Embrace the season you’re getting married or engaged in. Hit up sites like Poshmark, ThredUp, or local vintage shops to find beautiful photo-friendly jackets, scarves, gloves, shrugs, etc. That way your not having to take your big coat on and off and you’ll stay warm the whole time.”
