EDITOR’S LETTER

Oh, Canada! As one of the few born and bred Canadians on the Rocky Mountain Bride team, I feel profoundly honored to represent the Canadian Rockies and the talented creatives that make weddings and love stories in our region pure magic. The landscape that makes up the Canadian Rockies is as diversely beautiful as the creatives that call it home and I am so blessed to have been able to travel throughout Alberta and British Columbia to see some of the very best our country has to offer in the wedding industry.

Cover Story

cover story

Julia + Emlyn beach house, victoria

Kaylyn van Driesum photographed this captivating, bohemian island wedding at The Beach House on the shores of Vancouver Island. Blush Bridal Boutique provided Julia with a neutral Allure Bridal gown that displayed a stunning lace overlay. The bride’s mother’s ring was the most striking element of her wedding day ensemble. The intricately detailed Ruth & Dean cake featured fresh ranunculus and greenery to tie in the bohemian elements of the bride’s Rook & Rose and The Root Cellar bouquet. Pedersens covered all of the rental needs, from glassware to the guests’ chairs.

cover story

L O V E S T O RY

Julia describes their Island Lake Lodge summit proposal as the best surprise of her life - she had no hints and was completely surprised. The couple’s first look was intimate and romantic, situated in the sprawling rose gardens at Starling Lane. For Julia, getting ready with her bridesmaids and mother while sipping mimosas and singing along to ballads, will always be one of her favourite memories.

VA N CO U V E R I S L A N D 1 0 1 Advice for a perfect trip to Vancouver Island featuring favorite local spots. Like all of British Columbia, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Planning ahead can make all of the difference.

luke liable

S E A S O N A L W E AT H E R Vancouver Island is a brilliant wedding location, known for its mild climate. Its prime location on Canada’s West Coast makes the area incredibly diverse when it comes to its cities, for each place has a special atmosphere that is unlike any other. Victoria, the sunny capital of British Columbia, has the most mild climate in Canada, and is a beautiful locale for its large harbourfront and expansive gardens. On the other hand, the quaint district of Tofino is known to draw couples from across the world, with its picturesque landscape and relaxed surfing culture. While there is a high chance of fog in the area, it adds an intimate feel and serves as the perfect addition for memorable wedding photos. The best time for a wedding falls between the months of April and August, especially if you want to avoid the island’s rainy season from September to March. If you’re looking for a sunny and dry wedding location, we recommend checking out Victoria in July! If you’re geared towards more of a moody vibe, definitely book Tofino for October or November. Your day will be absolutely unforgettable in Tofino’s secret season - autumn!

Steering your guests in the right direction when it comes to packing for your wedding is sometimes difficult, but incredibly helpful. Adding a packing list to your wedding website will aid your guests in determining what to bring for the festivities. For a Vancouver Island wedding, guests should bring a pair of flip flops for the beach, and a pair of rubber boots in case the weather takes a stormy turn. A rain jacket is always a good idea on the island, no matter what the season is! Packing a sweater and a pair of sunglasses will ensure that each of your guests will be prepared for any type of day, whether it’s sunny or cool.

ACTIVITIES Head to Vancouver Island for amazing nature walks and coastal adventures. Hikes like Cathedral Grove are well-known and well-travelled, and often home to ancient Douglas Fir and Red Cedar trees. The West Coast Trail is one of the most famous hiking trails in Canada, where you will encounter a range in terrain and a rich Indigenous history. While you’re on the island you might as well take advantage of the ocean, by surfing the magnificent swells that come in to the shore. Soul Sister Surf School and Pacific Surf School are two of the highest recommend surfing companies in Tofino - you don’t want to miss out! Feel like you need a break after all of the outdoor adventures? Try beach yoga on Mackenzie Beach in Tofino! Hot Springs Cove in Maquinna Provincial Park is an amazing place to visit for a day trip on the island. Take an hour and a half water taxi trip to these geothermal hot springs, and be sure to look for whales on your way out! The hot springs are located at the end of a two kilometre stretch of boardwalks and wooden stairs. The water gets its heat from a major geological fault in the earth’s crust. The ocean water is pulled into the earth about five kilometres down and heated until boiled, before being pushed back up into the springs. Sounds like pure bliss! When you are feeling like a day out on the town, explore Tofino, Victoria, or any of the nearby hamlets for cute coffee shops, pretty boutiques and delicious fare. Victoria’s Chinatown is the second oldest in North America, and is home to the narrowest street in the country - Fan Tan Alley. vancouver island wedding guide 2020 / rockymountainbride.com

Make it official In British Columbia, you can get your marriage license in the three months prior to your wedding date, at any marriage license issuer or Service BC location. Only one member of the couple is required to apply for a marriage license, but they must apply in person and show proper primary identification for both parties. Your license will cost you $100, and is nonrefundable. You must have at least two witnesses at your marriage ceremony, in additional to the commissioner or religious official.

Local Wedding Inspiration

Katie + Kent s e a c i d e r fa r m , s a a n i c h t o n

Katie and Kent met while working for Global Morning News in Winnipeg and Regina, respectively. Their relationship eventually bloomed from the friendly rivalry that developed between the two morning shows. When both Katie and Kent independently moved to Alberta, it only made sense for them for them to connect. In March 2018, the pair had an alpine engagement that showcased the province that they’d come to love together.

SUNFLOWER DREAM

The couple’s favourite part of the entire wedding day was their intimate first look, amidst a sea of sunflowers. Kim Jay Photography captured the moment, which was quiet, special and just for them. Katie and Kent were both bursting with love, while Details Planning and Event Design ensured that the day went off without a hitch. The bride’s Essense of Australia gown, provided by The Bridal Boutique, was absolutely ethereal. A clipping of Katie’s mother’s wedding veil, sewn into her dress, was the perfect touch to her already beautiful ensemble. The forest clearing at Sea Cider proved to be a magical setting for the pair’s rustic chic wedding.

Danae + Jackson m a p l e b ay m a n o r , m a p l e b ay

Jackson and Danae first met in their ninth grade outdoor education class, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Vancouver Island is where the couple met, fell in love and where they’ve built their life together, so it was only fitting that they get married on the island. Emma McCormick with The Good Party helped to ensure that the ceremony and the reception flowed together seamlessly.

YOUNG LOVE

One of the couple’s favourite parts of the day was their first look. Maiko Media captured the special moment perfectly. The pace of the morning was peaceful and not hurried, making it easy for the wedding party to enjoy the beauty that Maple Bay Manor had to offer.

Meghan + Karl p r i vat e e s tat e , c o m o x va l l e y

Most love stories start with ‘boy meets girl,’ but in this case, the boy never met the girl…for four months anyway. With Karl being in Australia and Meghan living in Vancouver, their first date didn’t happen until months after their first conversation. Two and a half years later, the couple got engaged on an amazing surprise trip to Napa, filled with wine and fond memories. Karl read the poem on the back of the wine bottle that ended with, “will she be mine for this moment or for a lifetime?” We could guess, but we all know the answer, especially after their idyllic Vancouver Island wedding planned by Kim at Borrowed and Blue Events.

Lauren + David engagement

While Lauren was working in the labour and delivery unit, she met David’s mom who insisted that she meet her single son. After many hints and stories, the couple finally exchanged numbers and as they say, the rest is history. Photographer Jaleesa Matteazzi snapped this beautiful sun-lit engagement session to celebrate the happy proposal.

THE PROPOSAL Something that David learned very early on about Lauren was her love for anything Christmas-related. Going to Butchart Gardens to look at the Christmas lights became a tradition for the two, one that started with one of their very first dates and continued with their proposal. As Lauren and David walked through the gardens amidst all of the twinkle lights, David knelt down on one knee and asked his bride to marry him.

This happy couple met during Savii’s second week in Canada, at a career fair that Jack was hosting as the president of his graduate student society. Five years passed between that first introduction and the proposal of a lifetime. Barb of French Kiss Events meticulously planned each and every detail of the wedding over the phone with Savii. 45 friends and family members came from all over, including China, Edmonton and Victoria, to share the special moment. Their favourite moment of the ceremony was taking a vow in front of the stunning sky, soaring mountains and expansive ocean. It made them feel as if the marriage had been blessed by God.

Q & A with

The Good Party By: Erin Mitschele

What is your favorite part of the job? I absolutely love weddings and events that challenge my creative mind, relational skills, and problem solving abilities. I am always on the lookout for couples who have picked a venue that’s going to be a challenge; whether it’s a forest, a mountain top, or a back garden. I love a good tenting challenge and clients who come to us wanting to do something that I’ve never done before really gives me an opportunity to flex my planning muscles! Do you have a favorite tool of the trade? A super long tape measure, it’s so geeky but that thing always comes in handy on site visits. Where do you come up with your ideas? First and foremost, our couples - their stories as individuals as well as their favourite things - fav restaurant, coffee shop, pets, hikes, vacation spots, etc. always come into play when we are designing their wedding day. Another huge area of inspiration for our team is the beauty that surrounds us here on Vancou- ver Island! We love getting inspired by the West Coast elements and incorpo- rating these elements into our designs. Whether it’s on a hike, motorcycle ride, or simply a dog walk in the neighbourhood, there’s so much seasonal beauty here that it’s easy to get inspired simply by being in nature! What is one thing you wish you could educate your clients on? Enjoy the process! Planning a wedding is supposed to be a joyful and fun experience. I love to recommend that before you really start the planning process, make a date to simply just talk about your dreams and wishes for the day. What do you want to remember from the day, what’s most important to the two of you, and how can you celebration your love for each other with your friends and family by creating a unique event. Once you’ve figured out what’s most important to you two then use that list to come back to throughout the planning process so when you come to the hard decisions you know you are making choices with those key things in mind! What is your dream creation? I would absolutely love to work on a music festival inspired wedding weekend. Think an open field on one of the Coast’s Gulf Island full of bell tents, a stage with awesome music from dawn to dusk, and a late night dance party complete with fireworks! What is your most embarrassing moment? I walked into a very (very!) clean glass window at a venue while we were on site for a corporate event in December. I definitely didn’t even realize it wasa window and I tried to walk right through it and ended up with a pretty big goose head on my forehead. Luckily the clients hadn’t arrived yet, but my assis- tant Marley is still laughing about it!
