Vibrant colour meets modern abstraction in this styled shoot designed by Melanie at Keepsake Events. The shaped elements of The Cake & The Giraffe’s minimalist wedding cake and Jrnl Studio’s envelopes resemble the shapes seen in the golden age of modern art. The earthy-toned Hanaki Floral Design arrangements, filled with a combination of both dried and fresh flowers, perfectly complement the rich exposed brick of L’Abbatoir Restaurant, a Vancouver classic.
STUNNING SIMPLICITY The clean lines in Jrnl Studio’s menu cards and Bespoke Decor’s supplied tableware add to the sleek theme of the overall shoot. Abstractly styled florals acted as a centrepiece to please the eye among a simple and neutral tablescape. Vibrant pops of yellow and orange in the charger plates and candlesticks tie in the hues of the fresh florals lining the table.

Vancouver i’m happy anywhere i can see the ocean
VA N CO U V E R 1 0 1 Advice to share with your guests for a perfect wedding weekend in the Greater Vancouver Area featuring advice on what to pack for the weather and our favourite local spots to explore. Like all of British Columbia, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Planning ahead for your day can make all of the difference.
S E A S O N A L W E AT H E R Originally named Gastown back in the 1800s, Vancouver exists as one of the largest major cities in Canada. It lies about 34 metres above sea level and experiences a warm and temperate climate almost all-year round, rarely hitting temperatures lower than 1°C. Individuals from across the world flock to the area to take in the beautiful sights and experience both the ocean and the mountains all in one day. This is the ideal location for any couple who wants their wedding to have best of both worlds - with venue options in the great outdoors or bustling urban centre. While Vancouver has a reputation for being an incredibly rainy city, much like Seattle in the U.S., it does tend to be a bit warmer in the winter than other places in Canada. If you’re planning on having a coastal Vancouver wedding, then you might want to avoid the months between October and March, as this is the city’s rainy season. The area is sunniest and driest between the months of June and August, meaning this is the optimal time for a sunny warm wedding.

W H AT T O P A C K It’s always helpful to provide your guests with some guidance on what to bring for your wedding weekend. Adding a packing list to your wedding website will aid your guests in determining what is essential for the festivities. For a Vancouver wedding, guests should bring a pair of flip flops for the beach and a pair of rubber boots in case the weather takes a stormy turn! If they’re visiting the area during rainy season then it might be a good idea to get them to bring a rain jacket or windbreaker, as this will come in handy if they are doing any outdoor adventuring. As always in Canada, packing a light sweater in the summer will enable guests to be comfortable if the temperature drops during the day or at night. Finally, bringing a water bottle will be absolutely necessary if guests are visiting nearby locales like Whistler, which is located in the heart of the Fitzsimmons Mountain Range.
ACTIVITIES As mentioned previously, Vancouver is one of the best locations in Canada where you can experience the ocean and the mountains in one day. This wedding destination is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and urban lovers alike. You can take a day trip to the Capilano Suspension Bridge or Squamish B.C., or consider extending your trip and seeing Victoria, Tofino, Whistler or Salt Spring Island. If you’re wanting to stay on Vancouver Mainland, have no fear, there are endless possibilities for what you can do during your time in the area. Whether you want to spend your days in aromatic coffee shops or quaint local boutiques, Vancouver has no shortage of interesting sights. It might be worth your while to spend some time in the following neighbourhoods: Davie Village, Kitsilano, Gastown, Commercial Drive, Yaletown and Mount Pleasant. Kistilano is where you’re likely to see all of the yogis, beach goers, volleyball players and beer enthusiasts. Gastown is the oldest neighbourhood in Vancouver and has a great reputation (spelled wrong), for good reason! You can go on a walking tour to get a sense of the history and ornate architecture - pay the steam clock a visit while you’re there. You’ll probably then be ready for some fresh air and a view of the marine life. Stanley Park, Pacific Spirit Regional Park, Nitobe Memorial Garden and English Bay are some of the fan favourites for exploring the great outdoors in Vancouver. Stanley Park is extremely fun, especially for families, because you can rent bikes and tour around the waterfront. Pick up a nice lunch of fish and chips or a refreshing ice cream cone to keep you going for the day! When you’re all done, hit up the Granville Island Public Market for a couple of treats and delicacies for the evening and your future adventures.

Make it official In British Columbia, you can get your marriage license at some point in the three months prior to your wedding date, at any marriage license issuer or Service BC location. Only one member of the couple is required to apply for a marriage license, but they must apply in person and show proper primary identification for both parties. Examples of proper identification include: a birth certificate, IMM/immigration form, permanent resident card or citizenship card. A passport or driver’s license is only accepted in some cases. Your license will cost you $100, and is nonrefundable. You must have at least two witnesses at your marriage ceremony, in additional to the commissioner or religious official. U.S citizen? No problem! Canada, like the U.S. has no legal residency requirement for obtaining a marriage license.

Local Wedding Inspiration
Natalie + Lael heronsbridge, abbotsford
Natalie and Lael first met through their youth group at church, and the two of them have been soaring ever since. After just over a year of dating, Lael proposed on a winter snowshoe adventure up Mt. Seymour in North Vancouver. One of their favourite moments of their wedding was the helicopter ride that Natalie surprised Lael with. While the pair had a much smaller wedding than they originally anticipated, they loved having the chance to converse with every single one of their guests. They then got to have a drive-by wedding where they handed out custom cookies to all of the extended family members that they couldn’t invite.

Savannah + Ryan p r i vat e e s tat e , a b b o t s f o r d
Ryan and Savannah met on Hinge, all thanks to the radius of the app that spanned across the Canadian and U.S. border. After only eight months of dating, the couple knew that they wanted to spend their lives together, and starting to talk about getting married. When Savannah won an Instagram contest for a couple’s shoot by their soon-to-be wedding photographers, The Augusts, Ryan sneakily worked with them and planned a surprise proposal. Even thought, the day was chilly and rainy, it was perfect and completely lived up to all of Savannah’s hopes and dreams.

NEIGHBOURS Savannah and Ryan had every wedding detail falling into place, including the venue, photographer and the musician. Unfortunately, the world had another plan for them. The pair met a thousand obstacles due to the global pandemic, one of which was the closure of the border only two weeks after becoming engaged. The pair ended up having to have two weddings, flying between countries, and with only a week of planning to dedicate to each. Savannah and Ryan consider their wedding day to be an absolute miracle. The couple feel blessed to have had a beautiful intimate wedding day that ended in fireworks and a getaway in a BMW convertible - how fun!

ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE
“It is a stressful and uncertain time to plan weddings, even looking into 2021, but stressing the about the details isn’t worth it. Remember that a wedding is about a couple making a lifelong commitment of faithfulness and selflessness to each other and that everything else is just extra. Take delight in the idea of marrying your best friend and in focusing on a few small details to make the day special.”

After an immediate Facebook stalk and much to her dismay, Lyndsay came to find that Patrick had a girlfriend. A few years of working as coworkers later, the two finally got to know each other at a “goodbye party” celebrating Lyndsay’s transition to a new job and hospital.

The couple got engaged while on the other side of the world for Lyndsay’s 30th birthday. It all happened in Bali, Indonesia as Patrick and Lyndsay enjoyed a stunning beach walk before heading to dinner. As they walked along the sparkling shores of Bali and admired the tropical sunset, Patrick got down on one knee and asked Lyndsay to marry him. No spoiler alert here - she said yes! 17 months later, the pair eloped in beautiful British Columbia and ate their weight in Chinese food to celebrate. Bliss!

Sydney + Jean PITT RIVER
Just about a Grey’s Anatomy love story, Sydney and Jean met while on the night shift in their hospital’s intensive care unit. Jean was the on-call doctor that evening, while Sydney had just moved to the area and was getting adjusted to her new life. Our bride had her nose buried in a travel book when a handsome young doctor approached her to say “hello”. It actually wasn’t until she had come back from travelling South America that Sydney finally realized that Jean was the perfect guy! They spoke almost every day while she was away in Peru and that’s when the pair fell for each other, hard. Jean picked her up from the airport and Sydney blurted out their first “I love you” over dinner that night, which spurred the beginning of their story as an official twosome.

THE PROPOSAL
Any chance of Jean surprising Sydney with a proposal was shattered when she accidentally caught him bringing home the ring! Knowing her impatience when it comes to surprises, Jean had only one night to plan the proposal as Sydney left for her night shift that evening. The next day, the pair had a romantic evening filled with delicious home-cooked food, a special bottle of wine and some old-school tunes. Even though she knew it was coming, Jean still managed to get happy tears out of Sydney as he popped the question.

Sweetheart Events What is your favorite part of the job? My favourite part of being a wedding planner is executing the day and witnessing the couple seeing all the planning and design unfold.
Do you have a favourite took of the trade? My emergency kit on a wedding day!
Where do you come up with your ideas? My couples. While we use Pinterest to gather idea inspiration we really pull from our couple’s story, their everyday life, hobbies, travel and how they decorate their home.
meet stephanie reitsma, owner of sweetheart events
What is one thing you wish you could educate your clients on? While much of our job as planners is educating, I would love to focus on realistic budgeting and while DIY is a great way to personalize your wedding, the cost can add up and it will take up a lot of time and storage in your home.
What is your best-hidden talent? Baking…I’m not terrible ;)
What trend do you wish would disappear? I’m not a trend planner but I guess the one I would say is burlap runners and mason jars but I think I can confidently say that’s gone now.
What is the last concert you’ve been to? Glorious Sons but I am looking forward to dancing to Backstreet Boys when concerts happen again.

What is your favourite wedding season? Summer/Fall. Love a good West Coast outdoor wedding.
What is your Love Language? Quality Time and Words of Affirmation
What is your Biggest Indulgence? A good Pinot Noir or foot reflexology after a busy weekend of weddings.
What is your favourite place to vacation? Europe. I traveled solo back in 2018 and my next travel spot will be Greece. Can’t wait!
What is your Astrology sign and Ennegram? Sagittarius and Ennegram 2
