RACHAEL COLTON

Winter is here and it is my favourite time of year. I love the shorter days, cosying up in bed as the weather storms outside and off course the warmth and smell of log fires. This is the season to be jolly and with this in mind our winter issue is a guide to all that is special. We talk to the spectacular designers of Lawson Robb and profile the exciting new interior design store "Maven". With Downtown Abbey taking the world by storm we tour a stunning Irish Estate, Florence Court and cosy up in the earthy, industrial home of ROCO's very own photographer Sarah Fyffe. Eve Brannon brings us all the fashion trends for the New Year and we take a look into the trendy London Edition Hotel. As we embrace 2014, we look forward to all the opportunities the New Year brings. So grab a hot chocolate with marshmallows off course and enjoy ROCO's winter issue!

MEET THE DESIGNERS

LAWSON ROBB

ALIX LAWSON AND CHARLOTTE ROBB CREATED THE DESIGN HOUSE "LAWSON ROBB" TO ESTABLISH GREATER COHESION BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN, AND TO DELIVER BEAUTIFUL SPACES WHICH ARE A JOY TO LIVE IN. WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE DESIGN DUO TO DISCUSS THEIR DESIGN APPROACH AND PLANS FOR CREATING LUXURY HOME CINEMAS.

BY OFFERING BOTH IN-HOUSE ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN CAPABILITIES, WHAT CAN CLIENTS EXPECT TO ACHIEVE WITH LAWSON AND ROBB?

Combining the disciplines of architecture and interior design, LAWSON ROBB prides itself on exceptional project management control and a passionate commitment to designing individual homes to suit an individual brief. As a practice we understand space and light, how our clients like to live and we design homes in accordance with their lifestyles and aspirations. Architecture and design are combined right from the offset, every detail is considered. LAWSON ROBB has designed swimming pools,

home cinemas, wellness centres and wine cellars. The team offer a bespoke service, finishing off the interiors down to the last teaspoon and bespoke bed linen.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING PROJECT?

We loved working on a Grade 2 listed building in Knightsbridge. We had to combine the history of the building along with the client’s modern WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH WHEN CREATING TIMELESS, living requirements. It was a LUXURY INTERIORS? satisfying project to marry of Every home is special and every an historic property along with home unique. Specialising in a contemporary finish. steam-room and gym. The result seemed like an extra room to the home rather than a basement by maximising the space and natural light. We created a welcoming leisure space with light palette and layering different textures. A natural palette and range of textures were used from hand chiselled limestone, teak, raw cream silk in the cinema and silk rugs. Layered different, the result of the property was clean lines and elegance.

19

ISSUE No 7

HAS THERE BEEN AN INCREASE IN HOME CINEMAS THAT DEMAND MORE IN TERMS OF FUNCTION FROM THE SPACE?

There is more and more demand for home cinemas, we have seen an increase in this trend with all of our clients. Clients are looking for the best in terms of technology and functionality. LAWSON ROBB is constantly reviewing and updating our database of technologies. We look at each home cinema individually on a project by project basis and work hand in hand with a specialised AV company to ensure the latest cutting edge and reliable hardware is installed. We want

to understand the clients brief and how they will be using the home cinema and work with our client and budgets to tailor a home cinema specifically to their home. The brands we like to work with are Bowers and Wilkins who are very established high-end speaker manufacturers. All of Bowers and Wilkins speakers are in Abbey Road’s studios. The cinema screen size is dictated by the size of the room and proximity of the seat to the screen. LAWSON ROBB has seen an increasing trend with clients for a large comfortable day-bed as opposed to cinema seating.

INTERIOR DESIGN QUARTERLY

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CREATING HOME CINEMAS?

With a home cinema you have to consider the technical side as well as the cinema complimenting and looking good in a room. You need good technical advice and the correct screen size in proportion to the room size. LAWSON ROBB will always ensure the technical aspects such as wiring and the sound system are considered from the offset to ensure a perfect cinema room. A cinema room is a great space for clients to relax in so the ‘mood’ lighting of a room will play a critical role in the feel of the space. LAWSON ROBB re-create the feel of a cinema by soundproofing and blacking out a room altogether. In one home we installed acoustically silk clad walls and silk carpets to create comfortable and elegant surroundings. To ensure a client can watch a home cinema to the best quality, we consider the sound requirements of the room and the acoustics and distance of the projector to the size of the cinema screen. Refreshment options are often high priority on client’s lists, we often install a bar nearby and desired appliances such as coffee machines, popcorn makers and fridges for client to get to quickly for snacks.

In short, we wanted WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN MAVEN?

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?

After living in London for about 10 years I came back to N.I. to work for the family company (builders). I learned so much about project management and the technical aspects of all areas within the building industry. I eventually convinced the team to let me take charge of the show homes and things just grew from there. Customers began to ask me to do private work for them and eventually I realised it was time to make it my career. Catherine comes from a very business & marketing oriented background

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

I am inspired by everything I see – travelling is definitely my main inspiration. Designers like Abigail Ahern inspire me as she goes against the grain and does her own thing totally and isn’t too matchy-matchy. I admire her complete lack of fear and sense of humour. I visited her house last year and was fascinated by every inch of it. I’m also inspired by a lot of blogs, particularly ones from the US and Australia for example thedesignfiles.com and theeverygirl.com. Closer to home I love brightbazaar. com. Style-wise, many of them feature homes that are the

antithesis of Abigail Aherns’ signature dark style and are light filled and bright. But, the element both styles have in common are an unabashed love of colour. HOW DO YOU APPROACH YOUR CUSTOMERS?

Both in the shop and in the interior design practice, we try to make things as easy for the customer as possible. We strive to be friendly and approachable at all times. Sometimes, even thinking about hiring an interior designer can be a bit intimidating for

people as they often anticipate that will be super expensive. It really doesn’t have to be and can in fact rule out costly mistakes. Our customers invariably approach us as they like our style but we always work closely with our clients to ensure that their own taste is taken into account and that their personality is reflected in the finished product. WHAT DO YOU PREDICT AS A TREND IN THE INTERIOR WORLD FOR 2014?

I think after the recent property crisis, people are really seeing their homes as homes for life rather than an investment. In this vein, I see people wanting to personalise their homes so as to be a reflection of themselves and their lives. More and more, people are looking for unusual pieces that will have longevity. In addition, I think people care so much now about provenance and there is an ever growing desire to support local makers. It’s great when a piece of furniture has a story and personality behind it. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY COVETING?

I am absolutely coveting a table lamp from Donna Bates Design. And I would love an Ottoman Settee from Ligne Roset…….

Our home is an eclectic mix of earthy, cosy, country with a little bit of an industrial feel in the concrete bathroom and stainless steel in the Kitchen. We were adamant from the start that the house was to be cosy and functional, that's why we used so many reclaimed pieces and gave anything we installed the ability to age well and take whatever we could throw at it. There's no particular overall consistent style to the interior, we think each room can have it's own character as each has it's own purpose. Thank goodness we both agreed on everything and thoroughly enjoyed designing the interior, seeing it come together and now living in it. We researched everything thoroughly and were surprised at how many great suppliers we found locally. We've only been in the house for a year so there's still plenty of little elements that need added, but we continue to take great pleasure in watching it grow.

NATIVE LINE

ISSUE No 7

When we came across these wall hangings by Native Line created by designer Justine Ashbee our hearts skipped a beat. The beautiful ethic designs and unusal thread instantly made these designs stand out. We caught up with Justine to discuss how Native Line started and her inspiration for weaving in metals.

69

INTERIOR DESIGN QUARTERLY

HOW AND WHY WAS NATIVE LINE CREATED?

I decided to do a residency in the mountains of New Mexico, teaching traditional Navajo weaving on a sustainable farm. It was an incredible process of cutting branches from cedar trees on the property, which we stripped and hand sanded to make the loom armature. We handspun our own wool yarns, spinning freshly sheared wool from their sheep into lovely textured yarns with different shades of grey, cream, white, black, and ivory. All natural colors from the sheep fleece. We set up the loom, and began weaving a beautiful tapestry together, as a community, on the farm. It was a rediscovery of the gift of weaving for me, which lies in my roots as an artist. I continued from there, as I wanted to make pieces for the home, and wall hangings seemed like a beautiful jump from the drawing work I had been doing, into something more tactile. At the time I began doing the woven wall hangings, it was not something that was readily available in the market, either in interiors, or in fine arts. Textile Arts have had a huge resurgence in the past year, which is a beautiful thing to be a part of.

WHAT MATERIALS, FIBRES DO YOU USE WHEN WEAVING?

What is unique about the work that I do is that I use innovative materials. I discovered the beauty of weaving with metal while I was studying textile arts in university, back in 1999. I was looking for a material that could recreate the look and feel of rolling sand dunes. I used copper to weave undulating curves, which brought back the heat and mesmerising quality of the desert to me. Before university I lived in Oman for brief stints, as my mother moved there when I was a teenager. I spent my time going scuba diving in the ocean, and camping in the vast desert. The environments, the ocean, and the desert, have always informed my work. Sourcing materials while traveling is always exciting, as you discover new materials that are unique to different parts of the world.

LOVE ART ARTIST ORIOL ANGRILL JORDÀ

Oriol Angrill Jordà Oriol Angrill Jordà describes the technique of drypoint etching as “pure magic” – and magic it is, in his hands. He studied Illustration in Palma de Mallorca and printmaking at Central St Martin’s in London. With each work he strives to reach as real a depiction as possible, whether of a person or animal. He cites the Dutch artist M.C. Escher as having the biggest influence on his work. “I did not start like most of the artists I've met. As I listened, the majority of them had been enthusiastic about Art, almost since they were born, as a native desire to create or express themself. Unfortunately, it wasn't like that for me. Instead for me it was research into what I did better. I really had no interest in drawing or art culture. I did not know there

where people living and working in Art. Despite my childish ignorance, I already had a skill to draw or rather a facillity to represent on paper what I saw. With tough efforts to study and gradually passing courses, years passed with no artistic relevance, right up to High School when I found out what I did not like to do! I managed to pass Science and then I changed to the Art branch to start my early knowledge about the world of Arts and

the people that surround it. Unconsciously, I became more and more interested in the artistic world, images, pictures, illustrations, featured artists and M.C. Escher's work encouraged me to draw better. It was then that I realized I was indeed talented enough to pursue art seriously. After that, I started Illustration at the Escuela Superior de Diseùo de las I.Baleares. There, my interests were clear and I decided to dedicate myself to Art and be the best I can.

1

DESCRIBE WHY THIS IS YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM?

2

WHAT 5 WORDS BEST DESCRIBE THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE ROOM DESIGN?

I love my light and airy living room - my desk is situated in one corner, and in another is my hanging pod chair, a favourite spot to chill, work and rest!

Relaxed, fun, modern, eclectic and inviting.

3

IF I HAD AN UNLIMITED BUDGET I WOULD CHANGE?

4

WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE WHEN IT COMES TO DECORATING A ROOM?

I would add a deep teal blue velvet sofa, a beautiful mid century brass chandelier, and replace the coffee table with the round marble-topped one I have my eye on.

Work out it's function, and who will be using it and design it to suit. Make sure there is good flow (you can move around the room comfortably), good light, and fill it with things you love.

5

I AM ALWAYS ROOM.

HAPPY IN THIS

ROAST PHEASANT, RED CABBAGE & APPLE, BEER GRAVY – SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS

METHOD

2 PHEASANTS,

Preheat oven to 190c/375f/gas5 Place roasting tray on top of cooker on medium heat and heat rapeseed oil.

Deglaze the tray with the bottle of beer, using a wooden spoon scrape the caramelised juices off the bottom of the tray.

Lay pheasants in the tray and brown quickly on all sides for 2-3 minutes, place in oven for 30 minutes.

Add the thyme and chicken stock and strain into a saucepan & reduce to thicken ( you can thicken with a little corn flour if needed).

ALLOW 1/2 BIRD PER PERSON 120ML BRIOGHTER GOLD RAPESEED OIL 1 RED CABBAGE 2 COOKING APPLE – PEELED & DICED 100ML RED WINE VINEGAR 150G SOFT BROWN SUGAR 1 CINNAMON STICK 2 TBSP MAPLE SYRUP / HONEY 1 BOTTLE OF LAGER – I USE WHITE WATER BELFAST LAGER 1 SPRIG THYME 1/2 PINT BROWN CHICKEN STOCK

Pheasant should be served pink otherwise it will taste dry, so if you have a meat thermometer the breast should be 60c, legs 75c when cooked. Remove from oven and set the birds aside, cover to rest. To make the gravy, spoon out any excess fat from the roasting tray and place on a high heat.

For the cabbage, place the red cabbage, apple, vinegar, sugar, cinnamon & maple syrup/ honey into a heavy based saucepan and cook uncovered on a medium heat for approx 45mins until all the liquid has evaporated and the sugars have started to caramelise to make a sticky sweet & sour cabbage.

TEDFORD'S RESTAURANT Tedfords is a renowned restaurant in Belfast which specialises in fish dishes. Nestled in a three storey terraced house on Donegall Quay, which dates back to 1843, it offers impressive views of Belfast Lough and the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge.

orange jelly jus. The entire dish was mouth-watering and the scallops in particular were the perfect balance of softness in the middle and a nice brown crust on the outside. My husband chose citrus cured salmon with smoked Lough Neagh eel, avocado puree and cucumber jelly. He was very impressed with the combination of flavours and delicate presentation of the dish. Two empty plates were collected by the waitress whilst we sat back and waited for our main courses which we knew would be equally divine.

We were not disappointed. My main of sirloin of salt aged beef on a bed of pomme anna, onion puree, café de paris butter and beef & thyme beignet was honestly one of the most delicious dishes I have experienced in a Belfast restaurant. Each mouthful was savoured and my husband’s attempts to pinch food from my plate were quickly quashed! My husband was equally dazzled by his choice of roast rump of Irish lamb with lamb pastilla, crispy polenta piperade, artichoke and sun blushed tomato jus which he quickly devoured. We enjoyed our Merlot whilst we awaited our desserts. I chose the apple plate which is a selection of four apple desserts, each one different and beautifully presented on a long white plate. It consisted of an apple and almond sponge, a miniature apple crumble tart, apple sorbet, calvados crème caramel, hazelnut crumble and a cinnamon and orange syrup. It was lovely and refreshing. My husband chose a white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry sorbet, wild strawberries and white chocolate crumble which

he thoroughly enjoyed. My husband and I agreed that every dish we had was cooked to perfection despite the numerous elements involved and beautifully presented. Unsurprisingly, Tedfords is currently rated number 8 on Trip Advisor out of the 626 Belfast restaurants reviewed. I can honestly say that Tedfords is my new favourite restaurant in Belfast and I would gladly recommend it to anyone for any special occasion. Although the A La Carte prices may be slightly on the high side it also offers a reasonably priced lunch menu from Wednesday – Friday, 3 courses for £20, and a pre theatre menu from 5-6.30pm on Tuesday – Saturday at £22 for 3 courses.

Rachel talks us through her day. "We wanted to get married somewhere where one of us had a connection. We ended up keeping tradition by getting married in my home county, Co.Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. My parents live by the lake and have a great view, so a marquee in front of their house seemed like the perfect idea. We wanted the wedding to be

individual to us - the marquee provided us with a blank canvas that we could make our own. We chose a rustic theme, as our marquee was completely white, we had free rein to do whatever we wanted! We covered the roof in chinese hanging lanterns of varying sizes; some were pink to tie in with the bridesmaids dresses, and others were green and white. We used

106

hessian and hessian ribbon throughout the marquee to help create the rustic look. We also positioned wooden barrels throughout the marquee, had signs made out of driftwood and used wooden flower boxes from Colombia Road, London, for some of the table centre pieces.

Stationary was important to us – particularly the invitations, as we think they set the tone and theme of your wedding, and get guests excited about what is to come. Our invitations, menus and orders of service were made by La Lumiere Designs. They used a mixture of brown and white card - the text was mainly in typewriter font, to keep with our rustic theme. Guests had individual menus wrapped in bailer twine with a brown paper place name, and a sprig of lavender. Instead of table names, we had 3D brown table numbers. For

110

our table plan we stacked two distressed photo frames on top of each other, each containing a photo that had been taken by our photographers on our engagement shoot. We then hung large brown luggage labels over the top of the frames, one per table, with the names of the guests sitting on each table. After the wedding breakfast we removed the brown luggage labels from the photo-frames and asked guests to leave comments on the surround of the photo. By the end of the night the surround was full of messages – it looked really great.
