Travel & Quarantine

We fully expect schools in the UK to be starting the new academic year on time in September 2020. Recent information from the Boarding Schools Association has indicated that they are investigating the possibility of dedicated flights to the UK in the Autumn term for boarders.

PLAN A: Our established Programme of Induction

This represents the normal start to the academic year:

Wednesday 2 September

Thursday 3 September

Friday 4 September

NEW boarding pupils arrive before 12:00. Houses open from 09:00.

CURRENT Year 12 boarders return before 18:00

NEW day and boarding pupils’ induction and YEAR 12 induction CURRENT boarders return before 19:00

TERM STARTS

All pupils in school

PLAN B: Requirement for a 2-week Quarantine Period

The following is the outline of Roedean’s contingency plan if the requirement for a 2-week quarantine period is still required by the UK Home Office at the start of next term:

We will provide quarantine on-site, with other international boarders, 2 weeks before the term starts

Quarantine in School will reduce any need for further travel between guardians and School, and will give your daughter access to facilities on site, but a close partnership between parents, guardians, and School will help to find the best solution

PLAN C: Restrictions Prevent Travel to Roedean

The following is the outline of the School’s contingency plan if travel restrictions mean that your daughter is not able to arrive at Roedean for the start of term on Thursday 3 September:

You will have the option to reschedule her arrival date to Monday 2 November, or before by arrangement with Diana Banham

For those who require them, visas will remain valid for entry to the UK later in the term

Over the last few months, Roedean has shown that it can deliver on-line teaching and learning to a very high standard while the School has been closed. This model allows valuable interaction between students and teachers, and co-curricular activities have also been highly successful – very many parents, both in the UK and abroad, have commented about how pleased they are with the quality of the provision. ‘I wanted to give you feedback from my daughter following the first week of online learning, which has been all positive. Having this contact and focus is really healthy at this challenging time. She also commented on how nice it was to see and hear all of her teachers, she said they were all so friendly and positive, which is greatly appreciated as this is a very difficult and different situation for them too. We would like to thank all of the amazing teachers for their incredible hard work in organising such successful online learning and for the wonderful support. (Year 11 Parent) ‘I wanted to share some feedback with you around the remote learning. Congratulations the tutors for their communication and setting up the lessons so well. My daughter has been comfortable to work through the day independently, which is a real bonus when I am schooling her younger sister and also working from home. (Year 7 Parent) ‘My daughter has really enjoyed the lessons, and found them very interesting and engaging, and she feels connected to her class and her teachers. Teachers have obviously worked very hard to tailor their lessons to an online format. The actual lessons themselves, and the sense of connection with the class and teachers is really wonderful! Thank you to everyone! (Year 7 Parent) ‘Both my girls have blown me away with their commitment and determination to take part in the live schooling. They both get up at 3.30 am, make themselves a coffee, and start school. When we rise about 6am, they are happily ensconced in the office both engaged in lessons as the sun rises. It is actually a beautiful time of day in the Caribbean before the sun’s heat saps everything of energy. Can I say well done to Roedean for putting an excellent system together. We have no complaints at all.’ (Year 7 and 9 Parents)

We will run a flexible academic programme to accommodate any overseas students who are unable to join Roedean at the start of the academic year, due to travel restrictions or concerns. In order to bridge the gap until all students are able to come to Roedean, online learning will be available alongside physical schooling – learning materials will be provided online, students will be able to have face-to-face meetings with their teachers, and some lessons may be also recorded, if possible.
