THE LOVRENC LAKES

SKOMARJE

Are you tempted to walk across the soft carpet of meadow sward and observe the sun awakening over the tops of the timeless spruce trees of Pohorje? Set out on an hour and a half walk to the largest raised bog in Slovenia. An experienced guide will take you to the Lovrenc Lakes, which is composed of 20 small lakes that formed during the Ice Age 8,000 years ago. The entire bog has no surface water inflow; the lakes are supplied only by rainwater. The largest part of the marsh is overgrown with dwarf pines, and in some of the lakes white water lilies grow. The animal world is relatively modest, even though the Lovrenc Lakes represent the most important habitat of the endangered black grouse. A magnificent view opens up in all directions from the tower at the lakes.

Wake up. Allow the morning dawn and birdsong to accompany you on your way. Take a more than a three hour long hiking tour with an experienced guide to Skomarje, the highest compact village in Slovenia. A relatively easy forest trail descends all the way to one of the most important cultural monuments on the Zreče Pohorje – the Skomarje House from 1803, which represents a typical example of architecture of Pohorje. There is a memorial room of the poet from Pohorje, Jurij Vodovnik, in the house. Worth visiting is also the 700 year old Church of St. Lambert. On your way back, the path leads you past the Arbajter deer farm.

OSANKARICA and BLACK LAKE Feel the peace and deep silence on the routes that once led the freedom fighters. A moderately difficult trail leads you past the hut Koča na Pesku to Klopni vrh, where you can refresh yourself with “Heart Strength” in a cosy cottage. The mighty trees greet you in the Šumik primeval forest, a nature reserve in the gorge of the Lobnica stream where two waterfalls are located: Mali Šumik (9m) and Veliki Šumik (36m). After a few kilometres, you can have a refreshment and take a look at the permanent museum collection on the Pohorje battalion in the hut Dom na Osankarici. From there, you can hike up to the memorial park dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the Pohorje Battalion in 1943, which is only a few minutes away, or to the Black Lake, which was created around the year 6000 b.c. At the end of the Ice Age, the then inhabitants of Pohorje deepened the marsh surface and turned it into a lake. The lake was enlarged in the 19th century in order to bring wood into the valley. Today, the Black Lake is protected due to its unique ecosystem.

ROGLA BIKE PARK Are you an enthusiastic cyclist with adrenaline pumping through your veins? Then the Bike Park on Rogla is meant for you. Mountain biking instructors make you familiar with proper tilting through curves, pushing the bike over uneven surfaces and balancing on narrow segments at the top of the Planja hill. Before going down the many arranged tracks that run between the hundred year old Pohorje pine trees, try out the training range for beginners and children. A distinctive feature of all the tracks is that you can drive smoothly on all of them with every kind of bike, however the most recommended bikes are those that are intended for descending or “freeride”. In the Bike Park on Rogla, you can meet recreational mountain bikers and beginners as well as top cyclists and team members of the Unior Tools Team competing in the Mountain Bike World Cup. 04 | Rogla

THE ZLODEJEVO LAND... Full of adventures for small and big children.

DWARF’S EDUCATIONAL TRAIL Have you ever met a small roguish dwarf of Pohorje? What about the “Ant Bully”? Go for a ramble with the animator on the Dwarf’s Learning Trail and combine outdoor activities, creativity and fun with acquiring new knowledge and skills. Visit the “Ant Bully” from the eponymous nursery rhymes and ask her how she manages to build such a large home or what she uses formic acid for. Carefully observe your surroundings, as the Pohorje dwarf most certainly hid a treasure (note: the treasure is the Pohorje-style snack – a small loaf of black bread, an apple and Rogla water). Find it and have refreshment. At the end of the way, enjoy a “potato” picnic and have a lot of fun while playing fun games such as Blind man’s bluff, Who’s afraid of the man in black...

The Ant Bully

FARMYARD

There once was the ant Bully, six black legs she had.

Do you like friendly animals from a farmyard? It is only a half-hour walk or a few minutes by car to the hut Koča na Pesku and the farmyard nearby. Visit the naughty cow Mici and her friends: ponies, goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese and peacocks. Have fun with them and try out interesting farm chores. Prepare a real homemade cottage cheese from the milk from the cow Mici together with the animator and a friendly cook and then enjoy a healthy snack.

She wiggled, she sniffed, went all crazy and mad. Oh, that gluttonous ant, what did she do? She ate a bull and just left his horns two. Of course, this is all true, what that bull is strutting more? An ant has got six black legs, but a bull has only four. If you ever hear the ant bully grumbling around the world, too. Turn around and run away as fast as your feet can carry you.

RICH TRADITION AND CULTURAL HERITAGE AT EVERY STEP ŽIČE CHARTERHOUSE ... mysterious and tranquil defies time for centuries. Through the village of Žiče and along the valley of Holy John the Baptist, time seems to stop in the mysterious Charterhouse Žiče. In this remote valley, the former owner of this estate, the Margrave of Styria Ottokar III, set out to establish a residence for monks form the Great Charterhouse in France. When they arrived in 1160, they began building most of the buildings, first wooden and later completely solid structures. In the 15th century, the today’s Gastuž Inn was erected, which is one of the oldest still operating inns in Central Europe. Monastical life was halted in 1782 when Emperor Joseph II issued a decree to terminate the Charterhouse Žiče. After 1827, the buildings started to disintegrate. In the past few years, life is coming back to the Carthusian monastery.

KSEVT – The Cultural Centre of European Space The KSEVT takes over a central cultural role in Vitanje. The architectural design of the KSEVT building originates from the original plans of the first geostationary space station – a residential wheel – described by Herman Potočnik Noordung, once a resident of Vitanje, in his book from 1928. He profoundly influenced the field of rocket technology. A large permanent exhibition in KSEVT is dedicated particularly to him and his ideas and solutions for conquering space. In addition to the “Space Museum”, other local, regional and planetary activities take place in KSEVT.
