II. DEL: BRALNO RAZUMEVANJE NALOGA A Preberi intervju deklice Adrijane z mlado gospo iz El Salvadorja. S kljukico (¸) označi, ali so spodnje trditve pravilne (T-True), napačne (F-False), ali niso v besedilu (NT-Not in the text). Glej primer, ki je že rešen.

EL SALVADOR Adrijana:

Could you first tell me your name and where you come from?

Eunice:

My name is Eunice Palacios and I come from El Salvador.

Adrijana:

Where is El Salvador?

Eunice:

It’s a small country in Central America, along the Pacific Ocean between Guatemala and Honduras. El Salvador is nearly the same size as Slovenia, but its population is much bigger, almost 7 million people live there, whereas there are about 2 million people living in Slovenia. We are mestizos, which means that we have very different ancestors: we’re mainly a mixture of native Indian tribes and Spanish settlers. Immigrants from other European countries, Africa and Asia, especially from Vietnam, China and Korea, came later. My family tree is very interesting, as my great-grandmother was from Taiwan, one of my granddads was Korean and the other one was Spanish.

Adrijana:

My country is something special, because there are about 80 volcanoes there. Two of them are still active. The most famous volcano is probably Izalco, which has erupted about 50 times since 1770. Izalco used to be the most regularly active volcano in El Salvador, it even got the name “Lighthouse of the Pacific” because sailors could see it from the sea. At the beginning of the 19th century it became a famous tourist sight so the government decided to build a hotel at the foot of the volcano. But on the very day they opened the Hotel Izalco, the volcano stopped all its volcanic activities. Another characteristic of El Salvador is earthquakes.

Adrijana:

Are you afraid of earthquakes?

Eunice:

Well, not any more. I survived a very strong earthquake (5.5) when I was 7 years old. I was at school waiting for my mum to pick me up when it happened. I was lucky, because I instinctively stood under the door frame. This saved my life. The building collapsed. I was rescued with some other children about four hours later.

Adrijana:

That must have been scary.

Eunice:

It was but I was very lucky – only a scar reminds me of this terrifying experience.

Adrijana:

Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

T 0

Eunice comes from Central America.

1

Fewer people live in Slovenia than in El Salvador.

2

Mestizos are descendants of people from different races.

3

There are many immigrants from Europe who came to El Salvador after the Second World War.

4

About 78 volcanoes in El Salvador are still active.

5

“Lighthouse of the Pacific” is the name of the hotel at the foot of Izalco.

6

The volcano hasn’t erupted since the hotel opened.

7

Eunice was lucky to survive a big earthquake.

8

Eunice hid under a desk and that saved her life.

NALOGA B Preberi pismo in na kratko odgovori na vprašanja. Odgovori naj ne bodo daljši od petih besed. Glej primer, ki je že rešen. A LETTER TO A PENFRIEND

Dear Marko, Thank you very much for your letter. It was very interesting to learn something about Slovenian schools. Our school system is quite different from yours. I’m in the first year of Turpin High School in Cincinnati. Our school is very big and it has about 1100 students. We start school at 7.20 and finish at 2.15. The lessons are 55 min long and the breaks last five minutes with the exception of lunch break which lasts half an hour. We have six lessons a day. The school year is divided into 2 terms. Each term we are allowed to choose the subjects we are interested in. I chose English, American Literature, Individual Sports, Photography, Maths, and Home Economics for this term. I might take Spanish instead of Home Economics next term. All fourth year students have to take American History and American Government if they want to graduate from high school. Next year I’m taking a driving course. We can do it at school when we turn 16. As soon as I get my driving licence, I will be able to drive to school. I can’t wait! My favourite subjects are English and American Literature. I also like sports, and there are lots of different sports that you can do including tennis, swimming, archery, athletics, basketball and football. I mean American football of course, which is not the same as the football you play in Europe. We call your football soccer. American football is sometimes mistaken for rugby. I’m very good at cheerleading which is a very important sports activity here in the States. Cheerleaders are boys and girls who cheer for the school sports team during the game. Most teachers are pretty cool, but can sometimes be quite strict. If you misbehave in class, you are sent to the principal and given a detention. This means that you must stay at school after the lessons have finished. If you do something really bad you can also get suspended from school. This means that you are not allowed to come to school for some time. When you come back, you have to catch up on all the work you missed. It means a lot of hard work, believe me. Please write to me soon. Bye for now,

Beth Ann 50
