4 PORSCHE PARADE

Horizontally Opposed

Our cover story for this issue is the 2025 electric Porsche Macan, which is set to replace the petrol version in Australia by the end of 2024 and introduces a significant shift towards electrification for Porsche. With an unveiling that aligns with the discontinuation of its petrol counterpart, this move underscores Porsche’s commitment to an electric future. Available in two all-wheel-drive variants, the $133,700 Macan 4 with 300kW power and the $180,100 Macan Turbo delivering 470kW, they represent a notable price increase from the current petrol models but promise superior performance and electric efficiency.

In Australia, the switch from petrol to electric Macan will be immediate, differentiating from other markets where both versions will coexist until 2025. This strategy places the electric Macan as a direct competitor to electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX3, and the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz EQC successor, highlighting Porsche’s ambition to lead in the electric SUV segment.

Delayed from its original 2023 launch due to software development challenges, the electric Macan is at the forefront of Porsche’s strategy to dominate electric vehicle sales, targeting an 80% share of its global sales by 2030. Built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) shared with the upcoming Audi Q6 E-Tron, it promises cutting-edge electric vehicle technology and

shared components that are likely to influence future Porsche models, including the electric Cayenne and a flagship SUV codenamed K1.

Design-wise, the electric Macan diverges from its petrol predecessor, adopting aesthetics from the electric Taycan sedan, particularly the new rectangular headlamps with matrix LED technology and a sleeker roofline for improved aerodynamics. Its dimensions have slightly increased, offering more interior space and a larger cargo capacity compared to the petrol Macan. Technologically, it features up to three digital displays, Android Automotive OS for its infotainment system, and advanced driver assistance systems enhancing both convenience and safety.

Performance is a key highlight, with the Macan 4 and Turbo models boasting dual permanent synchronous motors, a 95kWh battery capable of fast charging, and advanced suspension systems for unparalleled dynamic capabilities. With its launch, the 2025 Porsche Macan not only signifies Porsche’s electric transition but also sets a new benchmark for electric SUVs in terms of performance, luxury, and technology.

As usual, a big thanks to everyone who contributed to this issue and our advertisers who support the club.

President’s Report

Welcome to the Autumn edition of Porsche Parade

Now that the Formula 1 at Albert Park has wrapped up, it got me thinking about just how incredible it is to have the very best of motorsport showcased right on our doorstep. It will forever be one of my favourite events. And even though Piastri didn’t quite make it to the podium, the excitement and energy surrounding the Grand Prix is testament to the enduring passion for performance racing.

Looking back over the last three month, the Club has delivered a substantial range of events, continuing to expand our calendar year on year. Our committees have been hard at work, ensuring there’s something for everyone – whether it’s mingling with friends, revving engines on the track, or simply showing off our shiny new toys.

In addition to our regular lineup, I am excited to announce plans for a professional networking group within

the club. If you’re interested in getting involved to help us kickstart this initiative, or in assisting with any of our other events, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are always on the lookout for fresh faces, and it’s a fantastic way to meet fellow members you might not have crossed paths with before.

As we gear up for the coming months, I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events. Whether it’s our Club Morning in April or any other exciting activity on our packed calendar, there are plenty of opportunities to come together and share our passion for the Club and all things Porsche.

Social Reflections

The new year was upon us before the ink was dry on our planning calendar for 2024.

Our Social Committee has had new additions, reinvigorating the committee, injecting energy and new ideas. I would like to welcome Natalie Griss, Deborah Weinbach, Simon Murray and Susan Cummin. Further, I would like to thank retiring members Stephen Lofthouse and John Orchard for their hard work and contribution.

We are in March and your hard working committee has already organised seven events!

Our Social calendar kicked off on February 4, with a very well attended coffee morning held at Benzina Stables. Over a hundred cars were on show, displaying a magnificent range of Porsches, with Benzina sponsoring free coffee for our attendees to enjoy. Thanks to Simon for his organisation and Benzina for their generous support.

Karen Bentley organised the women’s run, which received great feedback, thanks Karen.

Our first Club Night was held at Porsche Centre Melbourne’s temporary show rooms at 359 Plummer St Port Melbourne. The night was very well supported, with well over two hundred members attending and enjoying a very well catered BBQ dinner and drinks.

PCM were very generous with not only providing the show room, but also making available two wonderful door prizes, which no doubt our winners were blown away with. The first prize was a Taycan for the weekend and a second prize a classic model 911.

PCM’s newly appointed General Manager David Simpson, was pleasantly surprised at the number of members attending and the quality of the speaker and catering. David also addressed our members and welcomed us to the dealership.

For the night David organised a very special car to be trucked in for display on the night, (which PCM workshop are currently working on ) a 3.6 964 Turbo, previous owners being Sultan of Brunei and Jenson Button.

David shared his thoughts on the night, with him stating:

“It was an absolute pleasure to host the Victorian Owners Club in our Port Melbourne site: Sales Haus. It was great to witness the gathering of so many passionate enthusiasts, all united by our shared love for the Porsche brand. Our Sales Haus has never been so full! I enjoyed getting the chance to speak to so many owners and hear their stories.

Looking forward, we eagerly anticipate the unveiling of our new Destination Porsche showroom. This venture represents a significant

milestone for us, and we cannot wait to showcase the latest innovations and models from Porsche to our valued club members. We eagerly await the four-wheeled adventures that lie ahead, and we look forward to having the Victorian Owners Club with us for every mile.”

Thanks, David, for hosting our club night.

Natalie and Simon organised an excellent mid week run to Jack Rabbit winery, with good survey feedback . I encourage everyone capable of taking benefit of a mid week run to certainly register. The run is well researched, enjoyable and culminating at a great social lunch venue.

Kon planned the Summer Run, which received good survey feedback and Greg Burns has a cult following for his Food and Wine nights which was very successful. Thanks Kon and Greg.

Werner organised a totally booked out Detailing Technical Night, with the registrations being extended, to accommodate our enthusiastic members experiencing a technical night on maintaining their pride and joy.

I have taken note of members request to have more Club Morning, after the success of our club morning at Young Timers Garage in August 2023. We will be holding two Club Mornings this year, one in April at Lorbeks and one in August at Young Timers Garage. We look forward to everyone attending.

I also encourage you to look out for our upcoming events including the Autumn Run in May, our Club Night in June and several other events.

Please feel free to contact me with any ideas on events, feedback or should you wish to join the Social Committee.

From Pit Lane

Drivers being drivers talk about lots of things – but weather gets a frequent mention. Our more relaxed drivers will be thinking mainly about personal comfort and convenience. Our more competitive driver about lap times.

Remembering 2023, we seemed to have many wet and cold track days. But the “power that be” then overcorrected the thermostat at our first event at Winton for 2024 to – hot hot, hot!! Thankfully, for the more recent events the climate control has gone back to more pleasant settings. (Hopefully we can retain those settings - oops this is Victoria; I really should not forecast the weather!!)

So, a new year and already we have three track events behind us:

w Winton Sprint in early February – and as mentioned it was hot – our wonderful Porsches kept running, but the drivers were wilting, and the marshals/flaggies did a fantastic job in the very difficult conditions.

w Haunted Hills Hillclimb in late February – The Hillclimb format at Haunted Hills throws a different challenge to our drivers compared to circuit-based sprint events. One car on the track at a time. One lap from a standing start. Then have a break while the other

entrants have a run. Then repeat three more times. Then (just when the drivers start to get a little bit comfortable) change the circuit configuration and four more single lap runs. And change the configuration again and repeat. In total 12 individual laps each from a standing start over three configurations, all separated by a roughly 20-minute wait for the other drivers to have their run.

w The always popular Phillip Island Sprint was in March on a freshly resurfaced and very grippy track. The combination of mild conditions, grippy track and precise driving saw four new lap records set.

Very pleasingly we are also seeing a new cohort of drivers coming through, with

Entrée at the Sprints almost fully subscribed - and the feedback I have from the various Mentors is that a good number of these newer drivers are already quite proficient.

When you are reading this, we will have completed the Porsche Centre Brighton - 2024 Sandown Regularity. Yes, the sponsorship of Porsche Centre Brighton has allowed the club to run the 360 Regularity again – with entries coming from many other Victorian car clubs and indeed interstate.

Since the last edition of From Pit Lane, the latter part of our Track Calendar has been finalised and includes a return, after many years, to Calder in October.

Which, as the year seems to be flying by like a GT3 down the Phillips Island straight, will come around pretty quickly!

Macan sets new standards: the first all-electric SUV from Porsche

Porsche is launching its second all-electric model: the new Macan with powertrains of up to 470 kW (639 PS) delivers E-Performance on any terrain and a high level of day-to-day usability. Sportscar-like performance figures are matched by high-performance fast charging at up to 270 kW.

Stuttgart/Australia. Ten years after its launch, the Porsche Macan is heading into its second model generation, now in all-electric form. Through its progressive, timeless design, characteristic Porsche performance, longdistance range and high everyday practicality, the new Macan 4 and the new Macan Turbo aim to completely fulfil the requirements of Porsche customers choosing an SUV. “We are taking the Macan to a completely new level – with exceptional E-Performance, the new Driver Experience, and a very impressive design,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, on the occasion of the world premiere in Singapore.

“Our aim is to offer the sportiest model in its segment with the all-electric Macan,” says Jörg Kerner, Vice President of Macan Product Line. Porsche exclusively uses the latest generation of permanently-excited PSM electric motors on the front and rear axles to achieve excellent efficiency and enable optimum reproducibility of the power output.

The numbers alone indicate top-class E-Performance: In combination with Launch Control, the Macan 4 produces up to 300 kW (408 PS*) of overboost power, while the Macan Turbo boasts up to 470 kW (639 PS*). The maximum torque is 650 and 1,130 Nm, respectively. This guarantees excellent driving performance. The Macan 4 accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds under test conditions, while the Macan Turbo takes just 3.3 seconds. The two models achieve top speeds of 220 and 260 km/h, respectively on the track.

New Premium Platform Electric with 800-volt architecture

The electric motors draw their energy from a lithium-ion battery in the underbody, with a gross capacity of 100 kWh, of which up to 96 kWh can be actively used. The HV battery is a central component of the newly developed Premium Platform Electric (PPE) with 800-volt architecture, used by Porsche for the first time in the new Macan.

The DC charging output is up to 270 kW. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80

per cent within approximately 21 minutes at a suitable fast-charging station. At 400volt charging stations, a high-voltage switch in the battery enables bank charging by effectively splitting the 800-volt battery into two batteries, each with a rated voltage of 400 volts. This enables particularly efficient charging, without an additional HV booster, at up to 135 kW. AC charging at up to 11 kW is possible at household wall boxes.

Up to 240 kW of energy can be recuperated via the electric motors while driving. The Integrated Power Box (IPB) also contributes to the efficiency of the new Macan models, while also saving weight and space. The

Sporty proportions and coupé-like lines

w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w

Thanks to the sharper proportions and Porsche Design DNA, the new Macan models look dynamic and dominant. “With the allelectric Macan, we are presenting the first Porsche that we are taking electric from an established product identity,” says Michael

Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “The new Macan is clearly recognisable by its brand identity as part of the Porsche product family. The classic Porsche proportions have been further developed and optimally adapted to the challenges of an electric vehicle. This has further heightened the sporty, modern and dynamic appearance of the Macan. The design makes it clear: The Macan remains the sports car in its segment, even in electric form.”

The shallow pitch of the bonnet and the strongly pronounced wings give the SUV, which is 4,784 mm long, 1,938 mm wide and 1,622 mm high, a dynamic appearance even when stationary.

The new Macan can be optionally fitted with up to 22-inch wheels with staggered tyre fitment. The wheelbase, which is 86 mm longer than the previous model (2,893 mm), is offset by short overhangs at the front and rear.

The headlights are divided into two parts: the flat upper light unit with four-point daytime running lights is embedded in the wings and emphasises the width of the car. The main headlight module with optional matrix LED technology (standard on the new Macan Turbo) is positioned slightly lower in the front end. The characteristic Porsche flyline forms a unit with the flat rear window. In combination with

ISSUE 1, 2024

the frameless doors with characteristic side blades, the result is a sleek, sporty design. Strongly pronounced shoulders give the rear a muscular look. The Porsche logo now sits in the centre of the sculptural 3D light strip.

Active and passive aerodynamics for greater range

w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w

Porsche combines its design DNA with aerodynamics optimised for range. Thanks to the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) with active and passive elements and a drag coefficient of 0.25, the new Macan is one of the most streamlined SUVs on the market – with positive effects on range and power consumption.

The PAA system includes the adaptive rear spoiler, active cooling flaps on the front air intakes and flexible covers on the fully sealed underbody. Air curtains below the headlight module and the lowslung front end optimise the air flow. At the rear, lateral tear-off edges and the louvred diffuser ensure aerodynamic efficiency.

Two luggage compartments and increased interior space

w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w

The new Macan is a performance-oriented SUV with a high level of practicality for everyday use, high-quality equipment and spacious configuration. Electrification has led to increased luggage space in the Macan. Depending on the model and equipment fitted, the capacity behind the rear seat bench is up to 540 litres (cargo mode).

In addition, there is the front trunk, a second luggage compartment under the bonnet with a capacity of 84 litres. This amounts to 136 litres more than the previous model. If the rear seat backrest is folded down completely, the rear luggage compartment capacity increases to up to 1,348 litres. The maximum towing capacity of 2,000 kg rounds off the highly practical qualities of the new Macan.

Depending on the model and equipment fitted, the driver and front passenger now sit up to 28 mm lower than before, while the rear passengers sit up to 15 mm lower with increased legroom. The interior is unmistakably Porsche: the width of the cockpit is emphasised by an integrated black panel. The rising design of the centre console heightens the impression of a low and performance-focused position in the vehicle. At the same time, large windows give a light and airy feel to the interior space.

In addition to the modern digital user interfaces, there are also select analogue control elements – for example, on the air vents and the air conditioning controls. An LED light strip is integrated into the thoughtfully designed trim strip of the cockpit and doors. It acts as both ambient lighting and a communication light. Depending on the situation, it provides information or warnings – such as for greetings, charging processes or in conjunction with the driver assistance systems. The equipment in the new Macan enables a high degree of customisation.

Porsche also aims to use more ecological materials in its cars. A proportion of such materials is used in selected parts in the interior of the all-electric Macan.

Driver experience: high computing power and connectivity

w w w w w w w w

The Macan is equipped with the latestgeneration display and operating concept with up to three screens, including the free-standing 12.6-inch, curved-design instrument cluster and the 10.9-inch central display. For the first time, the passenger can also view information, adjust settings on the infotainment system or stream video content while the car is being driven via their own optional 10.9-inch passenger display.

For the first time, the Porsche Driver Experience also includes an optional head-up display with augmented reality technology. Virtual elements such as navigation arrows are visually integrated seamlessly into the real world. The image appears to the driver at a distance of 10 metres and corresponds to the size of an 87-inch display.

The new-generation infotainment system is based on Android Automotive OS. The standard Porsche Communication Management (PCM) in the new Macan takes computing performance to a new level. For example, the “Hey Porsche” voice assistant suggests routes, including charging stops, at lightning speed. In the new Porsche App Centre, passengers can directly access popular apps from third-party providers and install them directly in the new Macan.

First Macan with rear-axle steering and two-valve dampers

w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w

Porsche developed the Macan with a keen focus on quintessential Porsche driving dynamics and a characteristic steering feel. “Thanks to its particularly sporty seat position and low centre of gravity, as well as its impressive driving dynamics and steering precision, the new Macan delivers a real sports car feeling,” explains Product Line Vice President Jörg Kerner.

Both the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo have all-wheel drive. The two electric motors are controlled via the power electronics almost in real time. The electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) operates around five times faster than a conventional all-wheel drive system and can respond to slip within 10 milliseconds. In addition, the all-wheel drive distribution is governed by the selected driving programme.

by the consistent and precise front-axle steering for which the brand is known.

Macan models with air suspension – also standard on the Turbo – are equipped with the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) electronic damping control. This is also combined with the steel-spring suspension as standard on the new Macan 4. PASM now also features dampers with two-valve technology. Thanks to the more expansive damper map, this results in a wider spectrum between comfort and performance. This makes the differences between the driving programmes even more tangible.

For the first time, the Macan has optional rear-axle steering, with a maximum steering angle of five degrees. It enables a compact turning circle of 11.1 metres in urban traffic and when manoeuvring, while simultaneously enabling exceptional driving stability at higher speeds, ably assisted

Since 2014, Porsche has delivered more than 800,000 examples of the Macan worldwide. This success story is set to continue with this all-electric successor, which is produced in a carbon neutral way at the Porsche Plant in Leipzig.

In Australia, the new Macan models will be additionally fitted with the following features as standard:

Winton Sprint

Saturday 3rd February, 2024

First event for the year, and the tables have turned to Winton, rather than Phillip Island, for our first event. Winton is a great and demanding circuit for drivers, but the last two years our club experience saw Winton waterways rather than raceway. We probably needed paddles rather than fire extinguishers over the last four events!

Coming up to this event, I imagine most of us would have been studying the B.O.M reports, hoping for a dry day; and for once Winton stopped the precipitation and turned on the sun. And turned on the sun it did!

Upon arriving at Winton in the early hours, it was pleasant to feel the scratch of gravel under your feet, rather than the squelch of wet shoes experienced over the last two years. Expectations were high for a good day if the barometer didn’t climb too high.

Drivers briefing for the first time this year welcomed new drivers, and the responsibility of our club officials, volunteers, mentors and drivers. The addition and permanence of race receiver - Richard “Catch Love Me Tender’s”, new safety addition is also much welcomed. Richard’s mellow tones of “Red Flag” and “Chequered Flag” were somehow simultaneously melodious and soporific!

During briefing the merit of mentors was mentioned. These drivers give up their time to guide new drivers through the various circuits, indicating apexes, brake points and the various flow required for

safety and speed. Well done to all - it’s a demanding and time consuming process, not allowing mentors much down time between driving and the mentoring process. Huge shout out to you all!

Run of the days saw group 3 out followed by 4,5 etc. No rain!! Too much sun!! Conditions at first were good, with the heat not yet at its worst! The air was still, but not too hot, and the sun was doing its best- polar opposite to last years experiences! The positivity of the early part of the morning, quickly dissipated as the air and the track rapidly heated, sapping cars of speed and enthusiasm. Times were good across the day, but generally down for many of us, as the heat encroached, most of the field departing by 2.00 pm.

In A Class, Nick Cascone topped the class, followed closely by Guy Lavoipierre and Garry Saber in third.

In B Class, I was able to fill first place, followed by Carlo Fasolino in second and Dennis Bath in third. My day started and ended badly with the PDK in limp mode, the car then overheating and having to be trailered to Melbourne! Huge thanks to Scott Pittard, who very generously trailered my car and I followed him in his car! Thanks Scott, massive positive energy your way.

In Class C, times were close with Troy Hungerford winning from Mark Chrznowski in second and Hugh Feggans in third. Class D, Garry Voges first and Phillip Cox second!

Cup 6 Class, Peter Grant first. Cup 4.1, Andrew Smith first, followed by Cameron Rees second. Cup 991.2, Stefan Wojciechowski first, followed by Alan Din second.

Class M0, Peter Fitzgerald had it all to himself! Class M1, Greg Muller, took a good lead in first from Daniel Laskowski second and Wojtek Laskowski third, posting very close times.

M2 Class, Howard Burton first, followed by Malcolm Batten second.

GT1 Class, Grant Rule placed first, followed by Christopher Ryan second, and Matt Sears third. GT2 Class, Peter Jordan took a good lead from Will Horton second, and David Curtis third. GT3 Class, saw Richard Thompson drive very well in first from Phil Treloar second and Peter Harrison third.

Open Class saw Andrew Hall drive really well, taking first place from Daniel Reynolds and Stevan Stureveski third.

Thanks to the committee, marshals and other volunteers who make these days possible. Another seamless event and in the words of Richard

Porsches & Coffee Run

Saturday 16th December

This was the last run of 2023 and what a great morning at the start of the day as everyone started to arrive at Sweet Lulu’s Café in a lovely selection of Porsche models. The surprise was one of the members turned up with an awesome RWB!

After our catch up it was time for Kon to brief everyone about what to expect and what not to expect on what will be a very enjoyable run. Before long it was time to start the run what was to be along some great roads and countryside. Kon decided part of the run should include the airport for future travel. Although most of us

were expecting some challenging road conditions, it turned out VicRoads surprised a with very few areas needing a little caution.

The run along Wildwood and Darraweit Guim was very enjoyable with little traffic along the way and nice countryside. Going through Romsey encountered light traffic as we headed to Lancefield. From there we headed for Kilmore along a nice stretch of bends. At Kilmore we started heading south on the final stretch to our destination. Along the way we encountered some enjoyable and a little challenging country roads.

Although some of the roads were familiar, it made the run that much more enjoyable, knowing there were no surprises awaiting. Although most roads needed caution, also testing our driving enjoyment, there was some great country sights along the way to enjoy. As we were getting closer to our destination the run included Eden Park and Woodstock (a little trivia, the concert back in the early seventies was not held here). Once again encountered no other traffic which made run that much more adventurous. As we turned we entered the Golf Club located on a hill overlooking some lovely surrounding country sights.

The Growling Frog Golf Club didn’t disappoint, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, great location, scenery and those that stayed, which was most of us, enjoyed a very nice selection of meals. As we sat and caught up with each other, the meals started to be dished out and not only did the meals look delicious, were very tasty and also generous serves.

After our catch up and lunch it was time to head back home and end the PCV year 2023 on this final event on what it was a great run and day out with a great group of people.

Summer Social Run to Keilor Hotel via Lancefield

Date: Sunday 3rd March

The Journey Begins:

On the morning of the social run, the parking lot at Essendon Fields Central Plaza buzzes with activity as Porsche owners gather in anticipation. The sight of sleek, meticulously maintained cars lined up in rows is a testament to the dedication and pride of the club’s members.

Kon gathers the members for a briefing in the

car park. In the usual Kon style, he quickly gets the attention of all the members and after the introductions of new members, and a detailed briefing of the roads, the convoy sets off, the roar of engines fills the air, signalling the beginning of an exhilarating journey. With each twist and turn of the road, drivers revel in the sheer joy of piloting their Porsche through the stunning landscape of Victoria. From winding country roads to picturesque mountain passes, every stretch of asphalt offers a new opportunity to experience the thrill of driving.

As the cars made their way north along the scenic country roads, the morning air was filled with the melodious symphony of

revving engines. Drivers savoured the thrill of navigating the winding twists and turns. Continuing their journey, the convoy ventured through the charming townships of Bulla and Bolinda. Meanwhile, the drivers navigated the twists and turns, their focus sharpened by the sheer joy of driving their pride and joy. For the drivers, the journey was as much about the destination as it was about the thrill of the ride.

As the convoy approached Lancefield, anticipation hung in the air like a palpable force. Parking their cars in neat rows, the members of the PCV stepped out onto the sun-drenched, faces adorned with smiles that mirrored the anticipated journey of the day.

26 PORSCHE PARADE

And the journey continues…:

After a brief yet deserved coffee and comfort break, resumed the second leg of their journey, bound for the Keilor Hotel. The route traced through historic landscapes, passing Hanging Rock, Mount Macedon, and Gisborne, before veering south to Coimadai. Journeying east through Toolern Vale and Diggers Rest, the convoy finally arrived at their destination with a reserved car park nestled among a tree lined garden.

Keilor Hotel… a charming Host:

We were welcomed into a private dining area adorned with prized bottles of Grange nestled in glass topped tables, and members savoured complimentary drinks before indulging in a sumptuous lunch. Amidst buzzing conversation and cherished reunions, generous raffle draws, and prized wine bottles enriched the camaraderie. Departing with hearts full of happiness and memories, members cherished their achievements and the bonds forged on the road.

A big thank you to Kon Gogos, who is a fantastic organiser of such events. Without people with passion to organise such events, how would we enjoy such glorious days?

Passion is the spark that ignites the flame of unforgettable experiences, guiding those who organize events to create moments of joy and connection for others to cherish. “ “

Hill Climb at Bryant Park Haunted Hills

n Sunday 25th February, 2024

When the scene is set with an early morning trek through Gippsland and a sublime thick fog through the valley; you know you are in for a majestic sunrise when it lifts. Boy did it lift! With not a cloud in the sky, the temperature kept rising. We quickly swapped the coffee for iced water to keep cool.

There were 27 entrants, some new to the track and including a few Entrée class drivers.

Bryant Park screams challenge for a few reasons. The narrowness of the track for one means the day is a little different to sprint days. With only one car on the circuit at a time, doing one lap only before the next car, ensures you nail your lines for that lap. The name Haunted Hills had me rather curious though?

With three different circuits created for the day, we ran:

n Short circuit

n Figure 8 added to short circuit

n Outer circuit run clockwise

The morning briefing explained these and sequence of groups and seemed quite straight

forward!?? Perhaps it was all the other stuff that wasn’t straight forward to newbies like me and first time out of Entrée that made it hilarious.

I now understand how the traffic light works and start line is not the finish line; the entrance to the track is the exit and not beyond! I discovered all this once on the track rather than before and so scored myself an extra lap just to get it right! Yep lucky me…..but I was that one we all either laughed at or thought we missed something at briefing!! It was funny. Newbies can get away with loads!

The Conga line at the beginning of each circuit change was most helpful to refresh memories or enlighten the first timers with what to expect.

Hill climb became quite apparent at this stage. With so many blind hills and sharp turns, skills were needed. So too were warm tyres!!!

Yep I was that driver that discovered that whilst spinning off track mowing the lawn in the figure 8! All good though, nothing damaged as I was able to re enter the track. Phew! After a few runs each, times were improving

for all and we all stayed on the black stuff.

Everybody ran a brilliant day with 2 new circuit records. Peter Jordan in GT2 class on the short circuit; and Daniel Reynolds in Cup 991 class on the Clockwise outside circuit. Huge congratulations.

Once again, Marshals were in full swing and ensuring a smooth day was run. A huge shout out to all Mentors also. Guiding drivers without your own brake pedal deserves a medal I think! Sharing your knowledge and expertise to develop our skills and confidence helped me step up, so I am sure our Entrée drivers were very grateful on this day too. An incredible job done by all that deserves massive appreciation. Thank you to all.

Initially I wondered why this track is called Haunted Hills? Yes hills, but haunted? Perhaps on a cloudy misty and even wet day, new challenges arise. But not a chance for us on this glorious sunny day. A most successful fun day was had. n

Porsche 550 Re-Creation

Single family since new – well known in Porsche Club Victoria

550 History

Arguably one of the most important Porsche models ever produced, the 550 Spyder was the marque’s first racing car, debuting in 1953. Its body was fashioned after the 1948 Porsche 356/1 prototype designed by Ferry Porsche, but it was the vehicle’s speed and agility that made it the stuff of automotive legend.

The Type 550 is powered by an allaluminium 1,498 cc (91.4 cu in) fourcylinder quad camshaft boxer engine known as Type 547. The engine is equipped with twin 2-barrel Solex sandcast carburettors and dual ignition. In its first version it produced 108 HP (81kW) at 6200 rpm and a maximum torque of 89 lb ft (121 Nm) at 5000 rpm.

The 550 competed in numerous European races, including events held at Germany’s famous Nürburgring and Hockenheim. It took first in class and sixth overall in the 1954 Mille Miglia, its first race, then came in third overall at that year’s Carrera Pan Americana.

Elegant from every angle.

When Sports Illustrated wrote about the Porsche 550 series at the time, writer Griff Borgeson called it “fast and fiercely powerful, one of the most successful competition sports cars in history, and it has a personality no less complex than Dr Jekyll’s. At brisk highway speeds it is very easy to drive, docile, perfectly manageable, superbly responsive.”

Produced by Porsche from 1953 until 1956, only 90 Porsche 550s were produced and are highly collectable with the most recent sale of chassis #36 at Bonhams in March 2022 fetching USD$5,559,000.

The Darvall Porsche 550 Sourcing the Expertise

In the early 1980s, founding Porsche Club of Victoria (PCV) member and President, William (Bill) Darvall yearned for the thrill of open top motor racing from his boyhood days when the exotic Jaguar XK120 and Austin Healey 100M were successfully racing across Europe. But for Bill, the car had to be a period classic Porsche road/race car – the 550. At that time “real” 550s (when they came to market) were in the vicinity of USD$1m. So, Bill embarked on an adventure. He would source the best craftsman and build himself one!

The Graeme McRae Connection

In New Zealand, Graeme McRae (famous engineer, constructor and driver of Can Am, Tasman and open wheelers) had started to build RHD 550 replicas. In 1994, Bill flew to New Zealand to visit Graeme’s Auckland workshop, investigate the modern chromemoly tubing chassis construction method and to discuss with Graeme the use of independent rear suspension and 911 running gear to provide appropriate power and drivability similar to the original 550.

Use of 911 Running Componentry

Although Graeme had designed his replicas to use Subaru running gear, he agreed to set-up a chassis for a mid-mounted 1975 911 2.7 K-Jetronic engine with a 915 gearbox, 914 trailing arm and late VW Beetle torsion bar front suspension. (Note, Beck and Chamonix re-creations use either VW or Subaru sourced running gear and this is the only known 550 re-creation to use Porsche sourced engine, transmission, suspension and brakes).

The Reg Mort & Michael Garner Connection

Arriving in Melbourne in early 1994, supervised by initially Reg Mort and then Michael Garner, the engine, gearbox and running gear comprising suspension, 911 brakes with M calipers etc were all sourced and fitted along with a bespoke fabricated twin exhaust. Additionally, 15 x 6- and 7-inch wheels were fabricated from 912 wheels.

On the Road

In July 1999, (eight years after inception and after passing all Australian Design Rules), the

32 PORSCHE PARADE
Unique, beautiful and powerful. Arresting curves. Almost there! Bill and his pride & joy.

25 Years of Driving Adventures

Once registered, the 550 enjoyed a wide and extensive series of tours, display and road rally events. Over the years the 550 has travelled up the east coast of Australia, through inland NSW and evented in many road rallies including the 2005 Classic Adelaide where, famously, Bill & Barb overtook Sir Stirling Moss in a 356, much to his chagrin!

The 550 has been invited to Porsche Centre Melbourne (PCM) gala events for displays, most notably in late 2006 when PCM hosted a function that included a factory 1998 GT1 908/2 Spyder and one of the original factory 550 racing cars.

PCM’s view of the Darvall 550 Spyder is that they are delighted to see such well-made re-creations as it keeps the heritage of the marque alive.

Lots of Petrol Bowser friends

The 550 never fails to provide happiness and surprise to fellow road travelers who are amazed at the car’s beautiful lines and considerable performance. Many conversations have occurred whilst fillingup – “…what is it?”, “...that is so cool!”.

As Michael Garner quipped recently to Barb, “…the 550 drives like a 911… and it enjoys being driven”.

Maintenance since commissioning

Since registration in 1999, the Darvall 550 has been maintained by Michael Garner from Autoart (last service was in late 2023) and a full receipt history accompanies the car.

Over the last 25 years, the car has proven to be reliable, fun to drive with incredible power-toweight ratio, attracts car-enthusiast attention and is welcome at Porsche Club events where it has extensive history and is well known.

Time for a new Custodian

The 550 has had only one passionate owner since being developed by him. The time has come to pass the 550 to the next custodian to further enjoy touring, travelling and adventuring.

800kg Darvall 550 Spyder re-creation was registered by VicRoads with the personalized number plates “MY550”. On the road, light and nimble like its forbears and with similar 43/57% weight distribution, the car is a unique one-off built with passion and enthusiasm by a Melbourne-based Porsche aficionado.

Women’s Run to HEALESVILLE

Sunday 4th February

Photos by: Karen Bentley

The roar of engines, the sleek curves of iconic Porsches, and a convoy of like-minded women enthusiasts—this was the essence of the recent Porsche Club of Victoria Women’s Drive to Healesville, via the picturesque Macedon Ranges countryside. Organized with precision by the brilliant Karen Bentley, this day was a celebration of elegance, camaraderie, and the joy of driving.

Our journey began from the BP at Calder Park (after much admiration of our cars from a motorbike club also starting a run from there) and headed into the meandering roads of the Macedon Ranges, a perfect backdrop for the performance and style that Porsche cars exude. The convoy, consisting of professional women who share a passion for the iconic brand, created a spectacle as we navigated the scenic routes before stopping in Whittlesea for morning tea at Lady Sevin cafe.

The sense of unity among the participants was palpable. Conversations about horsepower, design, and the sheer thrill of driving a Porsche echoed through the air. It was more than a drive; it was a symphony of empowered women connecting over their shared love for these exceptional vehicles.

A highlight of the day was the stop at the Innocent Bystander in Healesville for lunch. Overlooking the stunning Yarra Valley, the winery and restaurant provided a perfect setting for a leisurely lunch. The chatter of empowered women filled the air as we relished a delectable meal paired with a glass of fine wine—a moment of pure indulgence and camaraderie.

Karen Bentley, the mastermind behind this exquisite day, deserves our heartfelt gratitude. Her meticulous planning and dedication ensured that every moment was flawless. From the scenic route selection to the charming lunch spot, Karen’s efforts transformed the day into an unforgettable experience for all participants.

In conclusion, the Porsche Club Women’s Drive was more than just a journey; it was a celebration of passion, empowerment, and the joy of being part of a community of like-minded women. As we drove back, each participant carried with her the memories of a day filled with the beauty of Porsches, the scenic Macedon Ranges, and the warmth of newfound friendships.

Cheers to Karen Bentley and the Porsche Club Victoria for orchestrating an event that will remain etched in our hearts.

Note from Karen: cheers to the lovely ladies who did on a variation of the second leg that took them to Yea! It wasn’t getting lost – it was reconnaissance for next time! And my personal thanks to all of our lovely female members who brought along a guest to show them how wonderful, welcoming and collegial this club is.

B ENZINA STABLES

Sunday 4th February

The first Porsche Club social event of the year was a fantastic success, with cars starting to turn up well before 8.30am. It was a beautiful morning in Melbourne which always helps as well.

Benzina Stables is a perfect venue for such events, as there is plenty of parking out the front and lots of great cars (and motorbikes) in the showroom. Benzina had organized a food van to be on site, and generously sponsored free coffees for members.

It was great to see so many beautiful Porsches there, from 924s, 944s, 968s and 928s, plus many 911s and Boxsters. Scott from Outlaw Garage was also there with his eyecatching 911 that definitely stood out.

Everyone that came along had a great time and it was a great start to the year. I would like to thank Adrian & Christian from Benzina for providing the excellent venue, and we look forward to doing another event with them.

DAY 2

Driving the Race Track

Guided Driving on the racetrack, and all the workshops, took place at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve Circuit

Opened in 2008, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is located in the south of Portugal near the city of Portimão. The 969-metre start-finish straight offers the ideal opportunity to experience the high performance potential of a Porsche. There are 16 bends as well as numerous dips and crests which challenge both vehicle and driver and promise adrenaline-filled and boundless driving pleasure. With good reason, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is considered one of the most modern and best racetracks in the world.

Guided Driving

On day one of meeting we were given the opportunity to complete laps at race pace where we achieved top driving performance, while honing our driving skills and achieving maximum enjoyment behind the wheel of both the latest GT3 and GT3RS models.

Broken up into 6 x groups of 5 x vehicles, with an instructor vehicle heading each group, our Porsche Track Experience instructors provided expert guidance by radio to each vehicle as they lead us through numerous laps of the circuit, covering the intricacies of high-performance driving in these two extraordinary cars.

For Mel and I first up was “The Beast”, as it is known, the incredible GT3RS, producing 860kg of downforce as we reached speeds of 260 kph at the end of the 969 metre main straight before standing on the brakes for the tight 2nd gear right hander. A further series of bends saw us take on the infamous turn 9 where we were pulling around 2.06g through this tight but fast corner. On completing 10 or so laps, it was back to the pits for a change of cars, and we got to do another 10 laps in the GT3.

In the morning our day was made up of our on track experience in the GT3 & GT3RS, while following lunch, we participated in four of the workshops.

Workshops

We participated in 8 x Workshops split over the two days, the workshops are all about looking beyond the horizon and into the future of the Clubs. Porsche Passion, Porsche People and Porsche Performance are all joined by Porsche Prospects.

Ranging from club workshops on how we can direct our respective Porsche Clubs into the future. Product Workshops on the GT Models (GT3, GT4RS, GT4CS), GT3RS and GT4e, and had an exclusive opportunity to gain insights into Porsche’s 2030 Orientation and Business Strategy with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology that will define the future of Porsche towards 2030.

The Club Focused Workshops

In these three club focused workshops, we discussed how to bring our Club’s into the future. What we should plan for in terms of major international club gatherings, and also what we can do to better connect worldwide.

Workshop 1 – “How we connect” looked at the opportunities and necessities of digital platforms in the future – including for Clubs

Workshop 2 – “How we meet” the event structures for the next decade are defined together with the Club Presidents and the cornerstones of the new brand identity were presented. The digital offerings and services of Global Community Management for the Clubs will also be reorganised and adapted to requirements.

Workshop 3 – “How we grow” dealt with young target groups, young talent and more diversity. In short: “How we attract the next generation“. Porsche Club of America presented best-practice strategies, while Porsche Deutschland shed light on the relevance and use of social media.

The Product Workshops

In the product workshops we had the opportunity to delve into Porsche’s newest GT-Models, to learn about their performance, and were briefed by expert instructors and speakers from Weissach on the fascinating applications and capabilities of these models.

The Orientation & Strategy Workshop

Workshop - Orientation & Strategy

2030. In this workshop we had an exclusive opportunity to gain insights into Porsche’s 2030 Orientation and Business Strategy that will drive the brand forward. In these invigorating sessions, we learnt of the roadmap that charts Porsche’s course for the future, with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology.

Evening Dinners

In the evenings over dinner, we met with participating Club Presidents and Board Members from all over the world, enjoying the camaraderie that is an integral part of being a Porsche Owner, and a member of the Porsche Global Community.

DAY 3 Taycan & GT4 RS Road Tour

Road Tour

Day 3 and we embarked on an unforgettable journey with an exclusive road tour, which put us all behind the wheel of the entire Taycan Range as well as the GT4RS, which gave us all the opportunity to explore some of Portugal’s most scenic routes on public roads, allowing us to savour the performance, comfort, and precision of these remarkable vehicles.

Porsche 911 Dakar Laps

On returning from our road tour in the Taycan’s and GT4RS’s we had afternoon tea, and were then transported by mini bus about 5 kilometres from the race circuit to be given a unique opportunity for the ride of a lifetime, experiencing the heartpounding thrill of passenger laps in the iconic Porsche 911 Dakar, as our highly skilled drivers took us on a high-speed adventure around a purpose built rally track.

Final Night Farewell Dinner

Our final night saw us take a short bus trip to one of Portugal’s top function venues Solar Do Paco. Here we were able to once again catch up with friends that we had met over the past three days, and enjoy the incredible atmosphere of our extended Porsche Club family.

A particular highlight for Melanie and I was meeting and talking with special guest Mark Porsche (son of F.A. Porsche) who addressed us on the night, assuring us all of the Porsche family’s commitment to the Clubs.

Club Night at Porsche Centre Melbourne Porsche Haus

Tuesday 20th February

Greetings fellow PCV members and selfconfessed Porsche Nuts. We hope you all enjoyed our first club night for 2024, one of many great nights to come. A big thank you to Porsche Centre Melbourne for the use of their temporary premises in Port Melbourne. By the way, we all can’t wait to see the new premises.

Clyde was his bubbly self, introducing David Simpson, new General Manager at PCM who spoke to us all about Porsche Classic. David is very approachable and personable and is more than willing to talk anything Porsche. We thank him for being there and making himself available for a chat.

Our guest speaker was quite humble considering his achievements. Greg Newton shared his passion and knowledge with us, I for one was quite amazed at his vast

experience and enjoyed listening. He is quite a unique individual, a master of his craft. If you have a restoration in mind for your Porsche 356, it might be time to call upon Greg Newton Restorations.

I’m not sure what you all thought about the caterers, surely the survey will reflect the members experience, however I was impressed and overwhelmed, would it be fair to say, they must’ve been the best to date? There was something for everyone, it was all so delicious and a Corona or two was perfect given the weather. We thank our Committee for the great choices that they make on our behalf.

To finish the evening two door prize winners were drawn from our RSVPs. Both prizes were courtesy of Porsche Centre Melbourne, with Dean Williams and Allison Galea drawing

the lucky names. Our winner of a Taycan for the weekend was Cam Ewart, while the model Porsche car was won by Stephen Michell. Sincere thanks again to PCM.

I may indeed be biased in saying this, and have shared these thoughts on more than one occasion, that we must be the best car club in Australia. As a member of many, I can clearly say, PCV is truly an amazing, welcoming and a very proactive club. It is a family. Our club is a template for any aspiring club, streamlined and at the top of its game, I suppose it’s not surprising that we are of similar ilk to the underpinnings of the brand we represent. Keep up the great work.

Anyhow, until our next club night, take care and I look forward to seeing all the smiley faces once again.

Phillip Island Sprints

The weather smiled upon us once more, graciously ending what felt like a year-long deluge in 2023. With skies painted blue and temperatures settling comfortably in the mid-20s, coupled with the freshly resurfaced track, the stage was impeccably set for a day of exhilarating motorsport.

Phillip Island holds a special place in my heart. The sensation of carrying serious speed through the flowing, fast corners is hard to beat when you get it right. Before hitting the track, meticulous preparation entails immersing myself in detailed analyses of YouTube clips, where luminaries like Fitzy and Stefan demonstrate the artistry of driving at its finest. It’s time to swallow a brave pill and dive into action.

My day commenced with a mentoring session, a role that always brings a hint of trepidation. Being a passenger on one of Australia’s fastest tracks, entrusted to someone I’ve never met, who’s still acquainting themselves with the thirst for speed, can be a nerve-wracking prospect. Fortunately, Goran, behind the wheel of his beautiful white Carrera S, proved to be anything but reckless. After some adjustments to his technique and fine-tuning his racing lines, Goran found his rhythm. Witnessing his progress stirred nostalgic memories of my own journey in Entree class a decade ago. It’s immensely satisfying to impart the wisdom accumulated through experience to budding drivers.

With Goran making strides, it was my turn to take on the challenge. A Class witnessed some formidable driving last season, with contenders like myself, Richard Catchlove, Bill Toohey, and Peter Jordan, all clocking in at 1:47s. With PJ’s transition to GT2 Class—much to the delight of Bill, Richard and myself—I felt confident of matching or even surpassing my previous personal best, positioning myself for a shot at victory. However, Nick Cascone’s blazing 1:46.9, following a 13-year hiatus from Phillip Island, caught me off guard. Second place would have to suffice for now, closely trailed by Bill in 3rd and Richard in 4th. Kudos to Nick for an outstanding performance!

The newly resurfaced track instilled confidence in drivers across all Classes, resulting in four new lap records. Yet, perhaps confidence got the better of Tony Carolan, who encountered a mishap at turn 1, finding himself in the kittylitter. Thankfully, both Tony and his car emerged in one piece, and I anticipate seeing the iconic black 996 GT3 back on track for the next round.

In B Class, Danny Loypur led the charge, followed by Dennis O’Keefe and Andrew Lipman. Mark Chrzanowski claimed victory in C Class, trailed by Hugh Feggans and Grant Stephenson.

Peter Jordan continued his dominance in GT2 class, setting a new lap record of 1:43.37. Thomas Eames secured second place, with Stephen Clark hot on his heels, and only two-tenths separating Dave Curtis in 4th.

Andrew Hall reigned supreme in the Open Class, establishing a new lap record of 1:32.73, with John Cox and Jim Leckey securing second and third places respectively.

Stefan Wojciechowski set a new lap record in Cup 991.2 Class with 1:34.57, while Adam Harris showcased his prowess in his 718 GT4 Clubsport, clocking in at 1:41.46. In the GT3 Class, Richard Thompson claimed the top spot, trailed by Peter Harrison and Andrew Campbell.

Next track event is the 360 Regularity at Sandown, and then see you at The Bend!

If I am allowed, I’d like to sum up the Cup Cars altogether, starting Alan Rosedie Din, with, wait hang on does that read correctly 1.12, that is outstanding, but of also Stephen Sluga and Daniel Reynolds (who also very kindly let my daughter take a photo of her next a pink Porsche, a pink Porsche being her chosen track car in the years to come)! Of course, all the Cup Cars are impressive, and I certainly take my hat off to you all, as the amount of work that goes into them to keep them on the track is amazing, the dreamers amongst us do appreciate your efforts.

The other highly notable area is the GT1 and Stefan Wojciechowski with lightening quick times, chased by Grant Rule and Adam Stafford. GT2 and GT3, Will Horton, Jeremy Fredersdorff, Richard Thompson, and Peter Harrison delivering seriously speedy

times and from what I could tell having a significant amount of fun as they did it too!

In the modified classes, Nigel Skinner, Greg Muller, and Michael Herrod, topped the tables for the day in each of the classes, I wanted also to take the opportunity to highlight Ken Eve’s day too, as always, the car looked and sounded fantastic and posted great times, such a joy driving with Ken. The courtesy he has always shown me and every time with a smile and a g’day, such a pleasure.

In the “Other” class, a good spread of times, Simon Ansell, Joesph Haddad, and Peter Fitzgerald topped the table, but notable to me was the Hyundai I30N hanging out at the back of the paddock, not that I got a chance to say hello to Michael Ban, but I hope you had a good day. Joesef Smith in Toyota 86, had a good day, in speaking to him he seemed happy, well as happy as Joe gets…

So all in all, it was a great day, and anyone who is interested in the competition side of the club, please do make the effort to come along, although the ‘competition’ name may spark feelings of a bad night of Board Games and overly competitive neighbors, we are there mainly for the fun, to get to know our cars, meet and greet likeminded people and to do some fast driving in a safe atmosphere. Come along to the next event and check it out as I am sure you won’t regret it!

Technical Night on Detailing

14th March 2024

PCV’s first technical night of the year was held at Detail Mode in Coburg North on Thursday evening 14 March. Although it was a cool evening the night turned out very well with over 40 club members attending.

Tasty burgers and drinks were provided by Mervette from the nearby Trade Place Café. Following dinner the detailing show got underway at 7.00pm with Meander and her team, including Darren from Revivify and Greg from New Life Leather Service, an independent leather restorer showing off his skills.

The event included showing the paint restoration process form Prep to Paint Correction by Michael on a 2010 Aston Martin Vantage. Following that we had a Safe Wash demonstration on the Detail Mode Mustang. Every attendee received a gift pack containing car care sample products, and at the end of the evening a grand door prize of a 2 Bucket Safe Wash Kits and the whole range of MODE Care products was won by Lee Turner.

In addition to our detailing specialists, I would like to thank Sam and Kon for their help setting up the evening and helping out.

Wine & Food Appreciation Dinner at Grossi Florentino

6th March 2024

Story by: Adrian Nelson

Photos by: Greg Burns

Porsche may be a world famous car brand, but when it comes to fine dining in Melbourne there are very few establishments that can stand alongside Florentino on Bourke Street. Established in the 1890’s as Café Denat, the restaurant moved into its current premises –a wine shop owned by Samuel Wynn - in 1925.

In 1928 Wynn bought the restaurant business and appointed Italian Rinaldo Massoni to run it. In keeping with the Italian cuisine Massoni introduced, the name was changed to Café Florentino and in 1935 the successful restaurant expanded into the premises next door. At the same time the famous murals depicting scenes from Tuscany were painted in what is still today the Mural Room. The downstairs Cellar Bar was opened in 1956 followed in 1959 by the street level Bistro Grill. The Grossi family acquired Florentino in 1999 and it has been fondly known as Grossi Florentino ever since.

And so it was that on a pleasant Wednesday evening thirty of us arrived (mainly by public transport) at the famous doorway to be ushered upstairs to the Wynn Room – named of course after Samuel. Upon arrival a perfectly chilled Ca del Bosco Cuvee Prestige was very well received. This crisp dry wine comes from what is widely regarded as Italy’s best

sparkling wine region Franciacorta – due east of Milan and close to Brescia – a key refuelling stop on the Mille Miglia. Delectable savoury and salty puff pastry bites were passed around while everyone was arriving.

Greg took control of proceedings – introducing our Italian wine expert Michael Trembath (celebrating 30 years of running his Italian wine importing business Vino Italiano), and inviting new members to profile their cars, which included at least one Mini. Our meal - prepared under the supervision of Carlo Grossi (who admitted to driving an Audi)kicked off with Ravioli all’ Aragosta – pasta parcels filled with lobster, dill, and tomato in a delicious sauce with a dash of vodka.

Two of Michael’s selected wines accompanied this dish – both from the small Soave region due west of Venice between Verona and Padua. These two distinctly different white wines, as Michael explained, were both sourced from premium producer Pieropan to demonstrate the versatility of the Garganega grape variety.

Michael then took us on a quick tour of the Italian wine industry, including passing on some amazing stats. Italian wine makes up 20% of world wine production with over 800 grape varieties in use by some 47,000 wine producers.

Our second course was a silky tender wagyu beef cheek smothered in a rich gravy, and accompanied by pumpkin, creamy polenta,

and some spicy fermented garlic. Naturally Michael Trembath chose red wines to accompany this dish – a bold Chianti Classico (Sangiovese) from Tuscany, and a more subtle Barolo (Nebbiolo) from the Alba wine region in Piedmont, south west of Turin.

Our dessert was Crostata do Peche – a classic baked tart with peach topped with a mouthwatering amaretto zabaglione. This was accompanied by a “sticky” – in fact a botrytised Sauvignon Blanc from the Marche Region on the Italian east coast.

After a splendid feast accompanied by superb wines, Michael had one more surprise for us before we headed home. For purely medicinal purposes of course, amaro is a classic Italian disgestif drunk to settle the stomach after a heavy meal. Michael produced a quite unique Sicilian Amaro D’alloro – bay laurel in Italian. I can’t speak for the rest of the group, but it may just be that this unusual medicine contributed to my excellent night’s sleep.

Thank you to the Social Committee and Greg in particular for organising another terrific evening. A big thank you to Michael Trembath for selecting, providing and educating us about some of his favourite Italian wines, and finally hearty thanks to Carlo Grossi and his team for some superb food.

Rauh Welt Begriff Melbourne Builds

29 October 2023

Akira Nakai’s recent visit to Melbourne brought a wave of excitement to the city’s car following as he cut up two Porsches. Vito of Polo Body Works (the shop housing the builds) had the responsibility of preparing the two cars’ paint prior to Nakai’s arrival and nailed it.

When Nakai showed up, the previously white 911 SC Targa owned by Scott from the Melbourne YouTube Channel Outlaw Garage had undergone some rust repairs and was looking great, if lacking a few body panels. Its conversion to a Rauh Welt weapon included new 3 piece gold and silver five spoke wheels, ‘picnic bench’ spoiler and the infamous original G series RWB flares.

Scott says that he plans to make his car the most driven Rauh Welt in the world, but murmurs of a world wide competition might make for some tough competition, with owners driving them across American states or daily at the Nurburgring. In any case, the car brings more Rauh Welt aesthetic into Melbourne’s Porsche world and Scott is not the type to make it a garage queen.

Nakai San’s unconventional and rapid process of modification has collected both admiration and criticism. Armed with an airsaw, he measures and executes cuts so fast that people step away for a coffee and miss what would be days of work for an ordinary human. Despite the criticism of his eyeball centric modification process, Nakai’s speed and efficiency are undeniable. He often completes the transformation of an entire car in under two days.

Nakai San is known for his affinity for breaks centred around smoking, he usually takes a moment to relax in his chair or analyse angles on the car during these interludes. Despite his friendly personality, Nakai’s serious and occasionally grumpy on-the-job expression has led to misconceptions about his disposition. Although these interpretations are usually intended as jokes, the seriousness that underscores the focus and dedication to his work is most certainly real.

During his visit, Nakai San also worked on a 997.1 Cabriolet; now wearing a widebody kit, ducktail spoiler, Midnight Purple III paint and bronze dished 3 piece wheels. The paintwork pays tribute to the 90s Japanese racing culture that Rauh Welt Begriff was born in, it’s predecessor ‘Deep Metallic Purple’ was first seen on the Nissan Z32 300ZX, but was largely popularised as a rare and sought after coat for the Nissan GTR. The colour’s rarity and unique look have led to it becoming an extremely significant piece of the JDM zeitgeist. This car has actually been fitted with the less aggressive body kit option referred to as ‘Street Style’ as the contrasting ‘Track Style’ is possibly a little garish for a cabriolet. Nakai San has named this car ‘Fukuen’, which is Japanese for reunion.

RWB Australia #11, the now Miami Blue Targa, wears Melbourne-based parts company Pegaroo’s new 3D-printed tail lights, designed by Chern Wong. Chern runs the Australian branch of Rauh Welt and owns the first RWB built in Australia, named ‘Southern Cross’ or ‘SoCro’ for short, but sometimes referred to as ‘Pinkie’ because of its

pink paint. The color is quite reminiscent of the iconic Pink Pig livery, but is apparently matched to a personally significant road bicycle that was owned by Chern.

Pinkie also received a notable update during Nakai’s visit, designated ‘SoCro V2S’ (as opposed to the prior update, ‘SoCro V2’.) It still runs a smooth fender widebody design, now with a rear bumper delete, metre long megaphone tailpipes and a painted 74 RSR ‘Iroc’ inspired rear spoiler. I have Chern to thank for being so kind as to let me behind the barrier for some photography during the event. It meant a lot and I did my best to stay out of the way!

Nakai’s Australian trip extended beyond Melbourne, encompassing Perth and Brisbane, where he worked on five more cars. These five included two backdates, two 997.2s with the more aggressive body kit, and a Rubystone red 964.

While Nakai’s work has been extremely divisive at times, the world’s Porsche following grows and becomes more appreciative by the day and these builds challenge traditions but respect history. I personally think it’s awesome to see these things rolling (or scraping) around.

Hopefully Nakai San returns soon!

Torque Tube Register Run to ‘Red Poppy Estate Winery’

Sunday 10th March 2024

By the time you read this, memory of the heatwave conditions over the long weekend may have dimmed. The weather often provides additional challenges to our Register Captains, and this was no exception. The forecast was for 39 degrees in Melbourne and 35 degrees in Romsey.

Before the event the venue contacted the Club regarding the high fire danger forecast for Sunday. The fire danger ratings above High include Extreme and Catastrophic. The venue advised that if a fire alert is promulgated, guests will be asked to leave the property immediately (possibly before or during lunch). They also noted that the dining area is not air conditioned. Register Captain Wayne Williamson has had a career involving risk assessment and switched into investigation mode…

The Torque Tube Register and friends are a hardy group and 23 members and 14 cars gathered at the Kalkallo service centre for a 9:45 briefing. There was a great mix of cars including a 924 Turbo, modified 924, 944 coupe and cabriolet, two 968 Club Sports (one supercharged), multiple 928’s, a 911 Carrera, 911 Cabriolet and a Cayman.

At around 10:00 the group set off through the Northern Highway to Wallan, Wandong and Broadford. Now it wouldn’t be a Torque Tube Register run without someone misunderstanding the directions. Sure enough the roundabout the

C727 proved elusive and many cars turned back when they should have been going straight. No matter. It is always funny when the heads of the leading group drivers and passengers spin around when a car appears giving way at drivers left when they should have been following behind. As we all know, Register Runs have a joyous habit of all meeting up at the checkpoint and so it was!

The group successfully made it to Gaffney Bakery at Heathcote! [www.gaffneysbakery. com.au] And what a magnificent country venue for morning tea – a former winner of Best Regional Bakery. The only concern was whether the group would tear themselves away from the goodies on offer.

After leaving Heathcote we headed west before turning south through Lancefield to the Red Poppy Estate [redpoppyestate. com.au] in Romsey. On the way we travelled some lovely roads and passed the Duigan aviation monument (which commemorates the first flight of an aeroplane built and flown by an Australian in 1910).

In shocking news, Red Poppy Estate is on a gravel road and on this hot and windy day there was quite the trail of dust plume as we slowly made our way along the road to the carpark. However, the Torque Tube Register and friends are practical bunch and secretly relished the idea of another thorough car cleaning session. There was one suspiciously clean black 996 cabriolet sitting in prime place when we arrived. It belongs to Andrew, winemaker, and co-owner at Red Poppy Estate. We extolled the virtues of PCV membership to him during the luncheon (thanks Angelo).

The venue was chosen for its uniqueness and did not disappoint. Red Poppy Estate (the poppies appear from September to November) is the wine label for Red Poppy Farm, a regenerative farm using organic and bio dynamic principles. Lunch was served in a converted stables with high ceilings, and wideopen stable doors allowing a pleasant breeze.

Co-owner Paola gave us a very informative talk-tour of the processes in use at the farm. The philosophy of the farm is that food is medicine. It is a certified organic farm and regenerative producer.

We were then treated to a tasting of low sulphur low intervention and other wines. We learned that Pet Nat (abbreviated from ‘petillant naturel’) is a natural sparkling wine that is made with as little intervention as possible. There is nothing added during the process, and nothing filtered out at the end.

During tasting we tried a 2023 pet nat (chardonnay and colombard), 2023 shiraz pet nat, a 2022 sparkling wine and a 2022 sparkling shiraz. Lunch was served buffet style in a lovely rustic setting in the stables. Overall, a very interesting and different venue.

Thanks as always to our Register Captain Wayne and partner Alison. These events do not happen without the tireless work of our volunteers. This one was a very thoughtful and interesting venue and location and a lovely day despite the weather conditions.

Mid Week Run to Jack Rabbit on the Bellarine

Wednesday 21st February

Wednesday, February 21st was the first mid-week run of the year—a thrilling drive to the esteemed Jack Rabbit Winery on the Bellarine Peninsula, orchestrated by the dynamic duo of Natalie and Simon.

Our adventure began in Inverleigh, a quaint little town offering not one, but two cozy cafes to fuel up before hitting the road. Natalie’s warm welcome set the tone for the day as we made our way to the Sonny Cafe. It was there that we met Steve and enjoyed a bacon and egg roll filled with conversation. Steve’s questioning of why we were drinking juices instead of coffee led me to admit we had no AC in our black-on-black Carrera.

Under the shade of a nearby tree, Natalie and Simon treated us to a quick briefing and introduced the new members, my wife and I included. After setting the stage for an afternoon of spirited driving and confirming there were no potholes, we bid farewell to Inverleigh. Our convoy of approximately

15 Porsches set out on a scenic journey through Mount Duneed and towards Barwon Heads. Among the beautiful Porsches were John’s mesmerizing GT3 RS in Ultra Violet and Steve’s beautifully presented Boxster in Guards Red, their vibrant hues adding a pop of colour to the landscape.

The rasp of the flat-six engines put a huge smile on my face as we started the back roads towards Mount Duneed. What a symphony of sound! Perhaps a new club mandate is needed. Those with sports exhausts optioned must have them activated at all times? Food for thought...

Despite the occasional navigational hiccup on the way, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect—clear skies, smooth roads, and plenty of sunshine. Well, maybe a bit too much sunshine for some of us. In the spirit of weight reduction, I had foregone the luxury of air conditioning, a decision that seemed wise until the temperature soared to a sweltering 34 degrees Celsius. But hey, who needs AC when you have the windows down, wind in your hair, and the thrill of the open road?

Driving behind another new member, Dominic, in his stunning 993, my wife asks the reason behind his spoiler raising every time we took

off from the lights. That led me to reminisce about my childhood days playing Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed and how I swore that one day I would own a white 911 993 2S.

Arriving at Jack Rabbit Winery felt like a triumph, a well-deserved reward for our journey. As we gathered on the picturesque grounds surrounded by views of the bay, we were delighted to discover a great selection of wines and beers awaiting us, perfectly paired with a diverse range of food offerings. From indulgent Black Angus burgers to crispy tofu delights, there was something to satisfy every palate. For the next few hours, we all continued to exchange stories and toasted to the joys of Porsche ownership.

As our first PCV event came to an end, we left smiling ear to ear, happy that we had finally joined this community—a community bound by a shared love for precision, performance, and the thrill of the drive. Huge thanks to Natalie, Simon, and everyone who helped make our day one to remember. Here’s to many more unforgettable journeys with The Porsche Club of Victoria!

Boxster Cayman run to Brothers on K

Well, we couldn’t have asked for better weather for our run: sunshine, light breeze, ideal driving conditions. Meeting everyone at Rockbank Service Centre was one of our usual starting points and despite slow coffee delivery with one cafe out of order, Mark was able to brief us on the run and which hazards to avoid, then got us going on time!

A quick run off the highway led us via Leakes Road, past the Melton Weir and Eynesbury, over the Bacchus Marsh Road towards Rowsley and Glenmore. We drove through a tree lined avenue and on to the winding hills that flanked the wind farms, an amazing sight as we drove up the crest with a few sharp turns. Certainly kept the drivers on their toes! With a sigh of relief (at least

from me navigating) we found some straight roads to Ballan.

Mark found a great car park behind the shops in Ballan for the cars to line up and off we went to morning tea. Hank and Heidi’s Cafe (named after their beautiful dogs) opened early just for us and everyone enjoyed a coffee or tea with a muffin, including gluten free choices. Many commented on the homely decor and comfortable furnishings, with plenty of room to accommodate us inside. They also have a pleasant outdoor seating area and being in the Main Street, some took advantage of checking out the town, new to some.

Having zeroed our odometers, we headed west through the Brisbane Ranges along well kept, winding roads, turning off before Fairy

Park and on to Granite Road. The vineyards and hills provided an interesting scene before the You Yangs appeared in the distance. Avoiding more direct and gravel roads, we circumvented Lara and arrived at the You Yangs Park entrance, where everyone took advantage of the optional drive up the mountain to the picnic grounds and amenities. Great views towards Geelong and Corio Bay were sighted and a hiking trail to the summit was noted for future visits.

Drivers needed to zero their odometers again as the run notes allowed for cars to drive through to lunch and not take the optional drive up the mountain, but to our delight, most chose to do just that. Members we spoke to later confirmed that some of the

roads and venues were a first for them. Expanding our horizons is what we look for in these runs.

Lunch was a great find at Brothers on K, situated on the road to Werribee Mansion and Zoo. We had a private room with excellent service by the staff, which many commented on. A delicious three course Italian inspired lunch was consumed over much socialising, with seven lucky raffle winners going home with a variety of wines. For many, the way home was a quick entry to the Princes Highway into the city. Many compliments assured us that it was a good day all round.

Boxster & Cayman Register Run to Dixons Creek

The cream of the Porsche owning crop gathered for the final Boxster/Cayman run of 2023 on a grey and drizzly morning in Diamond Creek. Energy was high as the morning caffeine hit worked its magic. We were fortunate enough to sit amongst Michael and Sue Minshall and new members Scott and Megan King. As is so often the case, conversation flowed easily, with the call for the run briefing pulling us back to the purpose of the day.

With organiser Carlo Fasolino laying out the plans for the day, the starters gun was metaphorically fired, and we were on our way. Our first leg was a run to Yea via Kinglake and Flowerdale. The narrow snaking roads were fantastic to drive, though the fog and rain meant complete concentration was required. This was especially so when you came round a bend to a pair of cyclists with one tiny red rear light between them!

We lucked upon a spectacular bakery in Yea, and chatted with new member David whose wife unfortunately had to pull out in the morning as she was unwell. Sugared up we hit the second leg, a shorter run, though no less interesting. The wet roads saw most drivers take this stretch at a leisurely pace.

Lunch was at Mandala Wines. After a car park debrief, it was inside for more socialising and lovely food. Several bottles of wine were distributed via the traditional raffle, with my wife Jess managing to snaffle a nice bottle of bubbly to top off our day.

Thanks to all participants of another wonderful Porsche Club day out, and especially to organiser Carlo, who put on a flawless day.

Looking forward to plenty more in 2024!

Modern 911 Register Run to Glen

Erin Winery

& Photos by “volunteer” scribes

Sunday 11 February 2024

Kon’s runs are always long, exciting and different, and his Mod 911 run was of the same mould. BP outbound near Calder Park was the meeting point, and on our arrival we were greeted with about 100 magnificent cars of all makes and types, Cobras, De Sotos, (the younger generations will have to Google them), Chevvies, Fords, hot rods, veteran and vintage units, literally a plethora of magnificent cars meeting up before they headed to the annual Hanging Rock Classic Car Show. But there was still adequate room for our equally magnificent Porsches, check out the Photos on the website to have a look at them.

At the appointed time Kon gave his briefing in his usual enthusiastic manner, introduced new members and gave his briefing on road conditions, etc. (which I am sure everyone had forgotten as soon as they got into their cars, at least this scribe did!).

A quick departure north saw us mixing with some of the Classic Car guys until we turned

west through Toolern Vale and then north to cruise through Gisborne via some fairly good and interesting roads around Greendale, Ballan and Daylesford to our morning tea venue at Glen Lyon.

However, Glen Lyon became a mini disaster when, due to a communication breakdown, the venue could not initially supply us with morning tea, but after some delay coffee etc was served, and then the good roads through Tylden, Tooboorac Pylong and Lancefield were covered quickly. Apparently, some attendees had some difficulty with the run notes downloaded to their mobile phones, but most cars arrived at the Glen Erin Winery at about the same time. At the Winery parking was good, our meals were nice, but I did feel the service was a little slow, and the aircon was not as cool as it could have been because it was “overloaded”.

While waiting for our meal, the room was loud with talk and laughter, a sign attendees were having a good time. Acting as MC Kon drew the raffles, prizes being Pepperjack Wine. In the surprise of Kon advising us that we had volunteered to write the story, (and also sweetening me up with a bottle of cheap plonk), I forgot to note the winners’ names, but I did take the winners photos, and they are on the PCV website, so please look at them there.

There is an old saying that a run is only as good as it’s participants and judging from the noise and laughter for a couple of hours at lunch, that, even with the minor difficulties, this was a good run, I know Harriet and I enjoyed it.

MID 911 REGISTER Run to Killara Estate, Seville East

With Santa only a few weeks away, a great turnout of 24 cars and 38 members assembled at Essendon Fields for coffee on a drizzly, cool Sunday morning. A great spread of 911 models from Leigh Norrie’s Guards Red SC to Dileep Mangira’s 997 GT3 and Peter and Peta Garriga’s immaculate black 993 Carrera S.

Giovanni Lo Mascolo’s 997 wasn’t too happy that he was using the little-used spare key after key number one was rescued from the washing machine. Several expert members assisted in getting the 997 to respond to the secondstring key and Giovanni was underway again.

New members and first-time Porsche owners Jason and Renee Kieseker arrived in their stunning white 992 GTS 4. With only 700kms on the clock it is probably the lowest kilometrage 911 on any PCV run. A great way to be introduced to 911 ownership…

Leigh Norrie, our run captain, warned about the potential state of the roads we were about to drive on, including potholes and roadworks but assured us that the state government’s bulk purchase of ‘Rough Surface’ signs on Daniel Andrews’ last trip to China wasn’t a waste of money and would prove their worth. Ken Anson had agreed to take some photos of the day and turned up with a very professional camera perfect for the job.

We headed off across the top of Melbourne taking Wildwood Road we encountered drizzle and Leigh’s first roadworks but the surface was pretty good, even over the single lane bridges. We were following Kon in his gorgeous Carmine Red metallic 992 GTS and he seemed to have a sixth-sense for potholes, skilfully avoiding them all with style and giving us fair warning. Turning left into Watson Street was an eye-opener though as there were potholes galore, some big enough to swallow a Boxster whole. Lucky, we

had Kon in front of us. A bit further along WallanWhittlesea Road, a rail crossing was on full alert but no sign of any rolling stock unfortunately. A few brave locals worked out that there was an error with the signals and went across anyway but the majority of us turned around for a quick detour up the Hume and off at the next exit which cost a few minutes but didn’t deter us from our objective.

Next came one of the best parts of the drive, along C725 and onto Kinglake-Whittlesea Road and by now, we were behind the gorgeous speed yellow 993 of Peter Day and Selwyn Graham. This road is familiar to those of us who have been on similar runs in the past and is always a favourite. A quick coffee and bite at The Flying Tarts Café and back onto the road for the trip to Killara Estate. Leaving the morning coffee, we were confronted by a short stretch of fairly thick fog, reminiscent of the film The Others (starring Nicole Kidman) and the progress was slowed but we made it to the best part of the run, the Kinglake Glenburn Road and Melba Highway with many corners and a great surface, perfect for our mid-911s. The fog was long gone, the surface was dry and the driving was a great experience.

Some more spirited driving to Healesville and then through Launching Place and onto the Maroondah Highway before we arrived at the beautiful Killara Estate. The grass at the front of the large restaurant and tasting centre was a perfect place to park the 911s. We retired to enjoy the delights of anti-pasta, gourmet pizza and hearty pastas, along with beautiful wines. Leigh got busy drawing the prizes and Frank Peh, Chris Ryan and Paul Sbrissa each won a bottle of Killara Estate’s finest.

A great way to spend a Sunday in December and despite Melbourne’s fickle weather we had excellent road conditions, some great driving and wonderful company. The perfect way to spend the lead-up to Christmas.

Mid Week Run to PARKSIDE WINERY

Wednesday 6th December 2023

Unfortunately, not all members can attend weekend runs for whatever reasons, family, sport, etc. But Mid Week runs are a great concept in that they allow such members to involve themselves with the Club, so it was pleasing to see Natalie and Simon organising another Mid Week Run so soon after their Kyneton Ridge Estate run in late October.

Essendon Fields was the meeting point, EF is arguably a reasonably central meeting point, and has plenty of good parking, and good coffee outlets. For us, and maybe some others, the week day morning traffic hold ups because of the forever ongoing roadworks was a nuisance, but the Lamanna Cafe coffee was very good, and compensated for the traffic hold up.

Attendees arrived in dribs and drabs, and I must take the opportunity of mentioning it was good to see John and Pauline Kirby all the way down from Kunnanurra, and, to jump a step forward, at lunch they did win a lucky plate bottle of wine, good on them, well deserved after coming all that way.

At about the nominated briefing time Simon and Natalie called us together, asked for new members, (in this case, none, which is unusual), and gave us a briefing on the road conditions

and the Club expectations, and with no other questions, that characteristic starting snarl of Porsche engines firing up filled the car park. As a group we headed north towards Sunbury.

A cruise through Sunbury, under the old historical rail bridge at Riddells Creek, and through New Gisborne took us onto the M79 (Calder Freeway), into Woodend. Almost all cars line astern as we passed through Tylden, a leading silver 911 causing smiles as it missed the right turn onto Springhill Road, but quickly correcting his error, and then on to our morning tea venue, the Glenlyon General Store. This venue is a very pleasant and popular spot with car clubs. The outdoor area at the back is very relaxing with its covering of grape vines, well worth a visit whether with the Porsche Club or not!

The cars varied from Nigel Watson’s 36 year old, but looking like new, red 944 turbo, to Harriet’s Aventurine Green Boxster S, which also looked pretty good (especially after this scribe washed it for her). This car gets used a bit, it has been to central Qld twice this year, and also drove the 2023 PCV Grand Tour, as well as a few Club runs. But all the cars presented well, each one a credit to its owner, even the red one of some unnamed origin.

Morning tea at Glenlyon lingered on, members seemed reluctant to leave the cafe but finally the cars were started with that again typical aggressive Porsche snarl, and we headed towards Castlemaine. Somehow the entry to the M79 proved difficult to find with a number of cars, (including us) turning about a kilometre too soon! Quick formation U turns sorted that out, and with a lot of laughter, the Calder cruise to the Woodend exit was easy.

Not so easy was finding the elusive Monument Road! A number of cars dissipating in different directions at a previous crossroads, with the result being cars approaching the Parkside Winery entry road from opposite directions, again a lot of fun.

Sitting outside in the shade of trees at Parkside Winery was very pleasant, and we were very well catered for with a very nice spread of cheeses, an old favourite of devils on horseback, tasty small pies, and very thin pizzas, very tasty food, and plenty of it. I understand the wine was very good as well!

Thank you, Natalie and Simon, for organising this run. We all enjoyed it and are looking forward to your next one.
