President's 2025 Charity of Choice: Foundation Scholarships

Happy New Year! I hope that time together with friends and family over the holidays was relaxing and enjoyable. Last year brought both challenges and progress to the industry. As we look ahead to 2025, we anticipate more opportunity for growth and resilience.

As President, it is a privilege to select a “Charity of Choice” for the Association to focus on. In recent years, Past Presidents have chosen organizations that assist veterans, young adults who have aged out of foster care, victims of child abuse, survivors of domestic violence and more. This year, in keeping with my theme “Our Legacy of Sharing Roofing Knowledge,” I have chosen the FRSA Educational and Research Foundation as my charity and specifically designated the Foundation’s Scholarship program.

In addition to scholarships, the Foundation produces roofing-specific continuing education seminars every year and provides funds when an FRSA committee receives Board approval for specific research. However, scholarships are currently the primary means through which the Foundation supports the industry. Over the years, Foundation Trustees have awarded $435,000 to further the education of students whose families work in the industry. Last year alone, under the leadership of Immediate Past President Les Sims, CPRC, 27 students received a total of $65,000 in scholarships.

As the numbers come together, I realize that if we can reach that lofty amount once again in 2025, the Foundation will be able to boast $500,000 in scholarship awards! The good news is that we are already on our way there thanks to the generous donations in years past to the Foundation Endowment. Interest earned from the Endowment’s corpus generates money each year: but the Foundation needs your help to reach the ambitious goal of $65,000 again.

Consider a Named Scholarship

Named scholarships provide an opportunity to honor or memorialize an individual or to generate recognition for a company. Typically, a one-time named scholarship involves a commitment of $5,000 or you can pledge a lesser amount, say $2,000 a year for five years, to spread out the recognition over multiple years. Here’s a list of current named scholarships:

■ Adam & Tracy Purdy

■ Austin Ebersold Memorial

■ Bowen, Hilson & Turner

■ Don Springer Family

■ E.H. Engelmeier Family

■ Edwards Roofing Co Inc.

■ FRSA Self Insurers Fund

■ George Pepin Family

■ Jean Engelmeier

■ Mason E. Liftig

■ Matt & Jackie Criswell

■ Steve Steele Memorial

■ Trent Cotney

I want to say a warm “thank you” to industry members who have made the Foundation’s scholarship program a successful way to enable the next generation to pursue their educational dreams. Thank you as well to our Foundation members – including our latest Founding member, ICP Group (see page 42) –Auction donors and participants and other donors: all of you play a critical role in the success of Foundation scholarships.

To find out more about a named scholarship or to donate, please contact Foundation Director, John Hellein at 800-767-3772 ext. 123 or john@floridaroof.com.

Best wishes,

Sika’s PVC Roof Recycling Program Reaches 100 Million Pound Milestone

Sika Corporation’s Roofing & Waterproofing has processed over 100 million pounds of post-consumer and pre-consumer PVC recycled membrane materials through its “Old Roof Take Back Program” and pre-consumer recycling operation. Sika started its unique “Take Back” program in 2008 to create a cost-neutral arrangement with roofing contractors to ease the burden on landfills while conserving natural resources.

When building owners purchase a new Sika PVC roof system to replace an existing one, Sika offers to recycle the membrane at no cost to the customer. The company removes the existing PVC roofing membrane and grinds it into material suitable for use in the backside of new products, including walkway pads, protection sheets and roofing membranes. Sika will even accept competing brands, PVC membranes at the end of their service life.

Sika says it is the only PVC roofing manufacturer that recycles old PVC roofs into new membrane products. Underwriters Laboratory has verified that Sarnafil and Sikaplan roofing membranes, PVC Protection Layer and Sarnatred products contain an average of 10 percent recycled vinyl content from preand post-consumer sources.

The Vinyl Sustainability Council, a self-funded business council advancing sustainability in the vinyl industry, recognized Sika’s roof recycling program with the 2020 Vinyl Recycling Award. The program has also been honored by the state legislature of Massachusetts and numerous roofing trade associations.

Forrest has over 20 years of financial, accounting and strategic leadership experience, with Stanley Black & Decker and with Raytheon Technologies. Most recently, he served as the CFO of SBD’s Smart Storage Solutions which includes the Vidmar, LISTA and

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) recently released a new technical bulletin, “Low-Slope Asphalt Roofing Recycling,” aimed at advancing discussions and implementation of recycling practices in the low-slope roofing and recycling industries. The bulletin highlights the potential of recycling asphaltic roof membranes, particularly those used in commercial roofing, and is expected to spark interest in this relatively underexplored area.

“The bulletin is designed to inform and educate our industry partners about low-slope asphalt roofing products and the potential benefits that await those who can successfully repurpose or recycle these materials,” stated Aaron R. Phillips, ARMA Vice President

of Technical Services. “The promotion of low-slope asphalt roofing recycling aligns with ARMA’s broader aspiration to reduce landfill disposal of asphalt-based roofing materials to 50 percent by 2035 and to approach zero percent by 2050.”

Low-slope asphalt roofing systems, such as builtup roofing and modified bitumen, are commonly found on commercial and industrial buildings. These durable systems contain high-value asphalt, which can be repurposed for road construction and other uses, reducing disposal costs for building owners and creating economic and environmental benefits.

Developed by a task force of ARMA member companies, the bulletin addresses challenges and opportunities for expanding low-slope asphalt roofing recycling in North America. “The relative quality and quantity of asphalt in low-slope membranes, which too often end up in landfills, could be repurposed and recycled, probably most easily into paving applications,” said Steven Wadding, Task Force Chair. “It is our mission that this ARMA Bulletin will enlighten and inspire roofing contractors, recyclers and any potential source using repurposed asphalt to work together so each can benefit from this untapped opportunity.”

While Europe has made strides in recycling these materials, North America is just beginning to explore the possibilities. Recyclers can collaborate with roofing manufacturers and contractors to assess the availability of low-slope asphalt materials, while contractors can help by separating asphalt components during replacement and discussing recycling with building owners. Together, they can make informed decisions that divert valuable materials from landfills. To review the technical bulletin, visit www.floridaroof.com/asphaltroofrecycling.

DOJ Salary Threshold for Overtime Exemptions Struck Down

As you may recall, on April 23, the Department of Labor (DOL) announced a final rule regarding the minimum salaries required for employees to qualify for overtime pay. That rule took effect on July 1, 2024, and increased the salary thresholds to classify certain employees as exempt.

However, on November 15, 2024, all that changed. Judge Sean D. Jordan of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, in State of Texas v. United States Department of Labor, granted summary judgment for the State of Texas, striking down the 2024 Rule on a nationwide basis.

What the Rule Had Called For

You are likely aware that the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) states that most employees working more than 40 hours in one workweek are entitled to overtime pay. There are white-collar exemptions for employees categorized as executive, administrative, or professional (EAP). Per the 2019 Rule, employees could be exempt from overtime if they have specified job duties and do not make less than $684 a week ($35,568 a year). In addition, highly compensated employees (HCE) are exempt if they do not make less than $107,432 a year. The 2024 Rule required the following:

■ The threshold for EAP increased to $844 a week ($43,888 a year) on July 1, 2024.

■ The EAP threshold would increase again to $1,128 a week ($58,656 a year) on January 1, 2025.

■ The HCE annual threshold increased to $132,964 on July 1, 2024.

■ The HCE annual threshold would further increase to $151,164 on January 1, 2025.

■ Future updates to these earnings thresholds would occur every three years based on ongoing wage data.

In addition to salary minimum requirements, employees would qualify for these exemptions if their job duties met certain requirements. The 2024 Rule did not revise the job duties requirements.

What the Judge Decided

Judge Jordan determined that the DOL had exceeded its rulemaking authority. He noted that although the DOL is allowed to use employees’ salaries as a basis to define EAP exemptions, it should not displace the job duties test. He reviewed the 2024 Rule and noted that rather than setting salary levels low for screening

out obviously nonexempt employees, it would result in higher numbers of employees being classified as nonexempt even though they met the duties test. In fact, he calculated that at least one-third of employees who met the duties requirements would be categorized as nonexempt.

His decision vacated the 2024 Rule nationwide. This means that the EAP and HCE increases that went into effect on July 1 are canceled and will revert to the 2019 Rule thresholds. In addition, the increases set for January 1, 2025, will not occur as scheduled.

Final Thoughts

It is possible that the DOL will appeal Judge Jordan’s ruling to the Fifth Circuit. However, as the Trump administration resumes office in January 2025, the DOL might not take up this fight.

A Roofing Contractor’s Guide to Quality Control

Quality control in construction, especially in roofing, is often misunderstood or overlooked. Unfortunately, it can become a formality – reduced to paperwork that project managers frequently delegate without much direct involvement. However, the true essence of quality control extends far beyond a checklist or a signature on a form. It’s about delivering a final product that meets and exceeds the client’s standards, complies with building codes and reflects the contractor’s commitment to excellence.

The success of a roofing project lies in implementing robust quality control processes that involve every team member. From the project manager down to the field crew – a top-to-bottom commitment to quality is essential. Let’s explore the nuances of quality control and understand its importance through real-life case studies and best practices in roofing projects.

Quality is More Than Just Paperwork

While documentation is vital for verifying that proper quality procedures are followed, it alone cannot transform subpar work into quality craftsmanship. Quality control in roofing projects should focus on three primary objectives: meeting the client’s standards, adhering to local building codes and fulfilling the contractor’s internal quality expectations. These standards extend to various aspects of the roof installation, including its functionality, durability and suitability for the intended purpose.

For roofing contractors, this means ensuring that the materials and equipment installed meet the required quality specifications. A paper trail alone will not suffice; a comprehensive approach encompassing every project step is necessary. The project manager must actively oversee quality control, setting clear expectations and ensuring the team understands the standards they need to achieve.

Pride in Craftsmanship

One of the critical aspects of quality control is fostering pride in workmanship among workers. Poor quality in construction often results from a lack of pride in the work being installed. Whether it’s improperly installed membrane or shingles, uneven surfaces or poorly fitted flashing, signs of poor quality often indicate a deeper issue with the team’s mindset. Quality craftsmanship stems from a sense of ownership and pride in one’s work, regardless of whether the final installation is visible or hidden.

A valuable lesson comes from a foreman known for their dedication to doing the job right. On a particular

project, the client was more concerned with early completion than structural integrity and aesthetics, prompting the project manager to advise the foreman to take shortcuts on the finishing. The foreman, however, insisted on delivering the best quality possible. “There is only one way to do a project,” he said, “and that is to do it right.” This approach is the hallmark of quality control – every task should be performed with pride and attention to detail, irrespective of how visible the final product will be.

Quality Control Challenges

Roofing projects present unique quality control challenges compared to other construction types. Each roofing project has varying materials, specifications and conditions. Factors such as extreme weather, site accessibility and changing personnel can affect the quality of work. To maintain high standards, contractors must be proactive in their quality control efforts.

■ Changing Environmental Conditions: Unlike factory production, where conditions are controlled, roofing projects are subject to variable weather, site conditions and temperature fluctuations. Quality control must adapt to these changes, requiring the roofing crew to be vigilant and flexible.

■ Diverse Teams: With workers and subcontractors often changing from one project to the next, maintaining consistency in workmanship becomes challenging. Each new team member must be thoroughly briefed on the project’s quality expectations and provided with the necessary training.

The Role of the Project Manager in Quality Control

Quality control begins at the top and the project manager is pivotal in establishing a quality-focused culture. The project manager must provide clear guidance on quality requirements and set the tone for the team. During site visits, the project manager should assess completed work and ongoing tasks to ensure compliance with the quality plan.

Delegating quality control tasks is essential but does not absolve the project manager of ultimate responsibility. Each team member, from supervisors to field workers, must understand their role in ensuring quality. Foreman and crew members should take ownership of their sections, overseeing the materials and workmanship.

Quality Plans: A Roadmap for Success

A quality plan should be developed at the project’s outset, detailing the processes and requirements for each phase. It is a roadmap outlining inspection points, checklists and responsibilities. While the quality plan is a crucial document, it should be concise – often no more than a few pages – and accompanied by relevant specifications, inspection forms and backup documentation. The quality plan must empower the contractor to control quality, minimizing unnecessary delays caused by awaiting client approvals. It should clearly define who is responsible for each quality check and under what circumstances work can proceed without direct client inspection.

Quality Documentation: A Practical Approach

The effectiveness of quality documentation hinges on its simplicity and relevance. The documentation process should not be burdensome or overly timeconsuming. Foreman and crew members must understand that filling out a checklist is not a substitute for a thorough inspection. Documentation is about recording the quality process, not just ticking boxes.

Standardized forms and templates should be adapted to each project rather than merely carried over from previous jobs. Additionally, the documentation should align with client expectations, as agreed upon at the project’s start, to prevent the need for revisions later.

Non-Conformance Reports and Remedial Action

Non-conformance reports (NCRs) are essential tools for addressing quality issues. While contractors may be hesitant to issue NCRs for fear of blame, these reports highlight problems, identify corrective actions and prevent future occurrences. Addressing mistakes openly allows for cost tracking, a better understanding of the issue’s impact and timely resolution.

In some cases, non-conforming work may need to be removed and reinstalled. Although it may be a difficult decision, this course of action often sends a powerful message: promoting a quality culture and ensuring that future work meets the required standards is frequently cheaper than going to litigation and trying to resolve.

Quality of Materials and Supplier Management

Quality control isn’t just about workmanship; it also extends to the materials used. Roofing contractors must verify that materials meet project specifications and tolerances. Materials should be inspected upon delivery and any defects or non-compliance must be documented and communicated to suppliers. Establishing clear protocols for handling defective materials ensures they do not inadvertently get used in the project.

Building a Quality-Focused Team

Achieving quality in roofing projects requires skilled craftsmen and knowledgeable supervisory staff. Investing in training programs for workers, supervisors and project managers is crucial. Providing ongoing education about quality standards and best practices strengthens the team’s ability to deliver high-quality roofing installations consistently.

Subcontractors also play a critical role in quality control. Contractors must ensure subcontractors understand the project’s quality requirements and monitor their work to ensure compliance. When issues arise, non-conformance reports help track and resolve problems while fostering open communication with subcontractors.

Conclusion: A Commitment to Quality

Quality control in roofing projects is more than a set of procedures or paperwork – it is a mindset and a culture. It requires a commitment from every project team level, led by the project manager, to produce a product that meets and exceeds client expectations. By implementing a comprehensive quality plan, conducting regular inspections, documenting processes and addressing issues transparently, roofing contractors can uphold their reputation for excellence.

Ultimately, quality control is about delivering a final product that stands the test of time, providing functionality, durability and client satisfaction. Roofing contractors can ensure success and profitability in every project they undertake by taking pride in their work, fostering a culture of quality and being proactive in addressing challenges.

The Building Department Told You What?

In my position at FRSA, I field calls from contractors, manufacturers, distributors, architects, engineers, building officials, consumers and occasionally from reporters. All of these calls are important to those calling and often for our industry as well. Among the most challenging but also the most rewarding are calls from contractors who are having issues with a building department. In many cases we can help the contractor understand that the department is interpreting the code as written and that they appropriately expect compliance. By helping a contractor understand what the code says and why that requirement may exist, hopefully we can make the situation a little more tolerable. In cases where the contractor has a defensible position, we may also be able to provide them with specific information that can then be provided to the official. In some cases the building department doesn’t have enough information to make a properly informed interpretation or may not be looking at all the applicable code sections. Sometimes, the direction given to the contractor by the department staff may not be that of the chief official or actual department policy. The Building/Code Official is considered the authority having jurisdiction and they are given wide latitude when interpreting the code in their jurisdiction. However the interpretation must be based on the code, statutes and ordinances. Issues can arise during the permitting process or during inspections. If an interpretation prevents you from receiving a permit, stops your work or hinders you from obtaining an inspection, then you are entitled to an explanation of why. A specific code section, statute or ordinance should be referenced by the department as part of its reasoning. So when a contractor is faced with this situation how should they address it?

■ First be professional. Be polite while explaining that you want to do the right thing but as an engaged professional you need help understanding the department’s position so you can avoid the same or similar problems in the future.

■ Request a copy of a code section or a reference to the code, statutes or ordinances being used to arrive at the interpretation. Sometimes by reviewing and providing this information the department may reconsider their position.

■ Review the information provided by the department to see if it addresses your issue. If you have trouble with it, call FRSA to see if we can help. If applicable, we will provide you with or guide you to information that you can take back to the department. The code is incredibly large and complex and no one knows it all. Your problem won’t be

resolved by complaining about the decision that was made. However, it may be resolved by obtaining pertinent information, preparing yourself with that knowledge and presenting it to the department in a respectful manner.

■ If that proves unsuccessful and the issue is one of broader industry concern, with your permission we will reach out to the department involved to try and help resolve the issue.

■ Patience is critical. If you need an immediate resolution, you need to understand that you may not get one and need to accept the department’s decision on this particular project as we deal with the broader interpretation. Getting access to the chief official can be challenging. They often manage a large department with many employees and have many other responsibilities. Sometimes communication can be painfully slow, however there are many departments that respond in a very timely manner and want to help resolve matters. Many of these departments regularly reach out to FRSA to help them address a roofing-related code or enforcement concern.

■ There are formal ways to review these decisions such as non-binding and binding interpretations by the Building Officials Association of Florida and declaratory statements by the Florida Building Commission, but these can be burdensome and often have issues concerning the standing of the party asking the question. We will always do our best to resolve the issue through direct communication with the department before resorting to these procedures.

We don’t win them all. Sometimes there are positions that have been held by the department for some period of time and they may be reluctant to review it and possibly change their position. At other times, the position is pulled from thin air and yet some departments may refuse to listen to anything from anyone. A few can be surprisingly arrogant and respond with something like “if you want to work in our jurisdiction, you will do it our way.” This is unfortunate but, rest assured, most of the departments want to work with contractors and, like us, want to get the work done properly, the inspections completed and the permit finalized.

I mentioned at the beginning of this article how addressing these issues can be both challenging and rewarding. I’ve covered some of the challenges but I want to also say just how rewarding it is when we have the cooperation of a responsive building department.

HEAVY-DUTY, NOT HEAVYWEIGHT

Added strength without any added weight.

ProVia metal roofing is constructed of highly durable 26-gauge galvanized steel—up to 30% more than the industry average. It’s also 3x lighter than asphalt shingles, so it’s easier to work with.

It’s the right thing to do.

Transform Your Business with CCN’s Virtuous Cycle of Success

In the fast-paced world of home improvement contracting, sustained growth and profitability often feel like a moving target. Most contractors excel in their craft but lack the structured systems and processes required to grow their business efficiently. That’s where Certified Contractors Network (CCN) steps in with a game-changing system: the Virtuous Cycle of Success.

At its core, this 8-step system is built on a powerful premise: small, consistent improvements – microimprovements – at each step of the cycle compound into significant gains over time. By iterating through the Virtuous Cycle of Success with every project, contractors can continuously refine their operations, scale their revenues and boost profitability. Let’s explore this process in detail and uncover how these microimprovements can transform your business.

The Premise Behind the Virtuous Cycle of Success

Many businesses strive for quantum leaps in growth but real, sustainable progress often comes from making small, intentional improvements. These micro-improvements, applied consistently across all aspects of your business, accumulate and compound into macro-level transformations over the course of a year.

For roofing contractors, every completed job is an opportunity to identify inefficiencies, implement better practices and refine customer interactions. By working through the Virtuous Cycle of Success with each project, contractors can gradually optimize their business from marketing to post-production to conducting a root cause analysis to close performance gaps. Over weeks, months and years, these small changes snowball, driving exponential growth and higher profitability.

The 8 Steps of the Virtuous Cycle of Success

The Virtuous Cycle of Success is comprised of eight interconnected steps. Each step represents a critical phase of a contractor’s business operations, offering countless opportunities for micro-improvements.

1. Marketing

2. Call Center

3. Sales and Sales Management

4. Pre-Production and Firewalls

5. Production

6. Post-Production Feedback Loop

7. Financial and KPI Review with Takeaways

8. Root Cause Analysis and Action Plan for Improvements

Then we “rinse and repeat,” as this is a never-ending cycle for improving your business’s systems and processes.

Step 1: Marketing – Generating High-Quality Leads

Every business begins with generating leads but the quality of those leads determines how efficiently they convert into paying customers. Keep in mind that marketing also encompasses building brand equity and clearly articulating your company’s unique value proposition that differentiates you from your competitors. In this step, contractors refine their marketing strategies, making small adjustments such as targeting specific demographics, tweaking ad copy or experimenting with new channels.

Example of a Micro-Improvement

Analyzing the performance of a digital marketing campaign and reallocating budget to higher-performing platforms. Over time, these adjustments ensure a consistent flow of high-quality leads.

Step 2: Call Center – Managing Customer Interactions

The next critical touchpoint is the call center. Whether in-house or outsourced, a well-functioning call center ensures that leads are handled promptly and professionally. Of course the ultimate goal in this step is to schedule an appointment with all decisionmakers present.

Example of a Micro-Improvement

Implementing a follow-up script for missed calls to re-engage potential clients. Over time, this results in higher appointment-setting rates and better conversion.

Step 3: Sales & Sales Management –Improving Close Rates

The sales process is the lifeblood of your business. Every sales rep on your team should be following the same sales process and script. If you have a proven sales process, there is no reason for anyone on your sales team to deviate from it at all. By fine-tuning sales scripts, objection-handling techniques and sales management practices, contractors can improve close rates and average ticket size.

Example of a Micro-Improvement

Train sales teams to ask better discovery questions during consultations. When you first meet with the homeowner, your goal is to come in wearing a doctor’s hat, diagnosing the homeowner’s pain points. This will be followed by wearing a teacher’s hat, educating them on the project at hand so they can truly make an educated decision. These small changes will yield significant improvements in client trust and contract value over time.

Step 4: Pre-Production and Firewalls –Ensuring Smooth Project Starts

Pre-production is where the groundwork for a successful project is laid. Building firewalls – proactive measures to prevent delays, errors or inefficiencies – are crucial here. In addition to firewalls, this step includes effective scheduling and a pre-production meeting with the ultimate goal of delivering a world class customer experience.

Example of a Micro-Improvement

Adding a pre-construction checklist to ensure all materials are verified before work begins. This simple step prevents costly delays and enhances customer satisfaction.

Step 5: Production – Delivering High-Quality Work

Production is where the promise made to the customer becomes reality. Ensuring projects are completed on time, on budget and to the highest quality standards is key. Remember, delivering that world class customer experience will enhance your business, leading to five-star reviews, referrals and repeat business.

Example of a Micro-Improvement

Introducing daily progress reports for crews to improve accountability. Over time, this leads to faster project completions and happier clients.

Step 6: Post-Production Feedback Loop –Enhancing Customer Experience

Once the project is completed, the focus shifts to customer feedback and quality control. By closing the loop, contractors can gather valuable insights and address issues in a total quality management meeting before they escalate.

Example of a Micro-Improvement

Creating a simple post-project survey for clients. Over time, this feedback helps identify patterns and refine processes to deliver better experiences.

Step 7: Financial and KPI Review with Takeaways – Analyzing the Numbers

Understanding your business’s financial health is critical for growth. Reviewing key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial statements helps contractors identify what’s working and what’s not. However, we must remember that your financials must be robust and accurate if you are going to be making data-driven decisions. In today’s digital world, the vast majority of top performing companies are making data-driven decisions.

Example of a Micro-Improvement

Regularly monitoring gross profit margin by product line and zip codes. Over time, contractors can shift their focus to higher-margin projects, increasing overall profitability.

Step 8: Root Cause Analysis and Action Plan for Improvements

The final step is where contractors reflect on challenges, identify their root causes and implement actionable solutions. To uncover the root cause of a problem, you must do a deep dive into detail to uncover the cause of

the problem. At CCN, we teach the “5 Whys Method” of conducting a root cause analysis. This step ensures the cycle is a continuous loop of learning and growth.

Example of a Micro-Improvement

Identifying recurring production delays caused by material shortages and negotiating better terms with suppliers. Over time, this improvement reduces delays and costs.

Why the Virtuous Cycle Works

The true power of the Virtuous Cycle of Success lies in its iterative nature. Instead of striving for overnight success, contractors focus on consistent, incremental progress across every business function. Here’s why this approach delivers results:

1. Compounding Growth: Micro-improvements in multiple areas compound into significant gains over time.

2. Adaptability: The cycle evolves with your business, allowing contractors to address challenges as they arise.

3. Sustainability: By focusing on continuous refinement, contractors build a scalable, resilient business model.

4. Customer-Centric: Improvements directly enhance the client experience, building trust and long-term loyalty.

Real-World Impact of the Virtuous Cycle

Contractors who embrace this system often see transformative results. One example is a CCN member

What's Wrong with These Pictures?

who increased their revenue by 40 percent within a year by consistently refining their marketing and sales processes using the Virtuous Cycle of Success. Another member improved their gross profit margins by identifying inefficiencies in their production workflow and making small, calculated changes.

Conclusion: Small Changes, Big Results

The Virtuous Cycle of Success is more than just a business framework – it’s a philosophy of continuous improvement. By making small, intentional changes with every project, home improvement contractors can achieve exponential growth in revenue and profitability.

At CCN, this is an invaluable tool we work with contractors on so they can successfully implement this system and see impressive results, year after year. Are you ready to start making micro-improvements that lead to macro gains? Let the Virtuous Cycle of Success guide you to the next level of excellence. FrM

How Accurate and Predictable Are Your Projections?

Budgets are typically used as an internal management control tool and are updated quarterly. Financial projections, on the other hand, are more often static estimates (or guesses) of future performance over a specific time period. These projections are frequently used in presentations to various financing sources or as part of a company’s long-term strategic plan. I’ve not only prepared hundreds of financial projections for my clients over the years but I’ve also reviewed hundreds more. That has given me insight into the preparation, validity and application of future financial forecasts. Many of those exaggerated market projections for the company’s products or services are based on some exaggerated or unrealistic or overly optimistic view of the market for the company’s products or services.

I’ve also seen projections that say, “If we can just sell our widgets to one percent of the 346 million people in the U.S., we’ll all be wealthy.” However, there is no cost-effective way to reach all 346 million people. Don’t make revenue projections based on the total market size; instead, focus on the market you can actually reach and sell to. Then, in the projections, show how you’ll reach and sell to that market, as well as the cost of doing so.

Don’t lie to yourself when preparing financial projections; be realistic about the future and what your company can actually accomplish in a given time frame and with the resources available.

After you’ve compiled your revenue projections, the first step in financial forecasting, you’ll want to focus on the expenses that will be required to achieve those sales levels.

Some expenses, such as direct material costs, will vary directly with revenue. Others, such as rent, will remain fixed and will not rise in tandem with rising sales until a future plateau is reached. Others will be semi-variable, meaning that they will rise in tandem with rising sales but not in proportion to the percentage increase in revenue.

Supervisory and administrative salaries, most selling expenses and business liability insurance are all examples of semi-variable costs. It’s critical to recognize which expenses fall into each of those three categories and treat them accordingly when preparing projections. If, for example, you show occupancy costs as a constant percentage of sales, any experienced person reviewing your projections will discount them. Examine each line item in the projections to ensure that it changes in a realistic amount and pattern over time.

For most forecasts, start with a detailed revenue forecast for each product or service category. Then calculate the number of employees and associated compensation costs required to generate those revenues, including direct labor as well as sales and administrative salaries. To obtain that information, first create line-item schedules for each category of personnel, based on the number of people and then convert those schedules into dollars, including all payroll taxes and employee benefits.

Forecast the other direct costs and related gross profits levels after completing the revenue and personnel costs for the projections. Estimate selling and administrative expenses only after the top half of the income statement projection is complete.

After I’ve completed all of that work and have a first draft of the projections, I answer the question – is the projected outcome reasonable as a whole and are the individual estimates that make up the projections based on reasonable assumptions?

The financial forecasts will gain validity by including a high level of line-item detail and supporting many of the line-item estimates with descriptive notes, rationale and assumptions. They won’t be dismissed out of hand as overly optimistic or based on implausible assumptions.

It’s a good idea to convert your income projections into balance sheet forecasts once they’re finished. As a result, you’ll have to think about things like the average collection period or the expected number of days in your accounts receivable and inventories. Investments in fixed assets required to produce the projected level of goods or services, as well as the various categories of liabilities required to support the increase in assets that will accompany the projected increase in revenues, must all be considered.

Finally, make a detailed cash flow analysis out of the balance sheet. Because such cash flows are rarely included in projections, this will come as a pleasant surprise to anyone reviewing them. Double check the overall projected results.

Have a series of leading indicators that you measure, monitor and manage. Finances are lagging indicators. Leading indicators include retention and attrition of customers and employees; activities and behaviors that lead directly to acquisition rates of new customers, pricing and service models, etc. Go to www.cofinsol.com for more key leading indicators. Mission Metal Manufacturing Honors Veteran With New Roof

Answering a phone call, Dixie County veteran James C. Simcoe wasn’t sure what to expect – certainly not a brand-new roof. But after a woman from his local church submitted his name to Mission Metal Manufacturing’s Habitat for Heroes, a program dedicated to honoring veterans, 83-year-old Simcoe was gifted just that.

“They were going to give a roof to a veteran,” he said. “I didn’t even know my name had been put in and all of a sudden they say they want to put in a roof if I would agree.” Taken by surprise on the call, Simcoe replied “of course.”

Mission Metals Manufacturing, based out of Old Town, offers high-quality metal roofing and gives discounts to veterans. Each year, the company selects one veteran to gift with a new roof. For 2024, the hero selected was Simcoe.

Mission Metals Manufacturing wants to ensure those who have served and protected U.S. citizens, have a form of protection themselves, in this case, a sturdy roof. The gifting process isn’t just about himself, Simcoe said. “It’s about all veterans that serve.”

Simcoe, who didn’t know much about the program prior to the phone call, now recognizes the work the company does for veterans across Old Town. “This program, Habitat for Heroes, has come here and helped me,” he said. “I’ve learned how much they actually do in the community.”

FrM

FRSA is proud of the volunteer work completed by members in the industry and would like to share those projects as often as possible. If you have a community service project you’ve completed, please send it to Lisa Pate at lisapate@floridaroof.com.

Brian Barlow, All Metals Fabrication, LLC

Head of Estimating

Brian has worked for All Metals Fabrication for three years. He serves on FRSA’s Membership Committee and Affiliate Council representing the Northeast Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal (NEFRSA) Affiliate.

How did you get started in the roofing industry? I started out of college working for a small roofing company in New Milford, Conn., thinking it would be just a transitional job. I worked as an Assistant Project Manager but soon started estimating which fit the way I think perfectly. It brought out my love for architecture and engineering. I was good at it, so I stuck with it. The rest is history.

What’s your favorite part of the job? The most important part of my job is creating. With every new project, I am a part of adding to society and creating jobs and opportunities for people. It’s a physical legacy you leave behind with every new construction project.

What’s the most unusual roofing project that you’ve been a part of? There have been so many in a nearly 30-year career, in many different market sectors and in 11 different states. But the most unusual project would definitely be Simmons Hall at MIT in Cambridge, Mass. It is a very organic structure with colored waterproofing Sarnafil membrane installed not only on the plaza decks but on the exterior walls and ceilings. If you search for this building on the internet, you’ll see what I mean. A strong emphasis on the word “unusual.”

What is your job? I am the Head of Estimating, planning and overseeing all estimating for the company, managing a team of estimators and designers with the goal of creating partnerships with all of our customers. How do you define success? Always moving forward, taking risks and living for the now. Mostly, seeing other people be successful and knowing you are a part of that is the greatest reward.

What inspired you to join FRSA? I love being involved with a community and I wanted to give back to an

industry that has given me great opportunities through the years.

What do you personally find most rewarding about being involved with FRSA? Meeting people beyond your direct world and learning from their unique individual experiences. I enjoy giving back and sharing what I learned because when I started, I gained so much from industry mentors. Now I am one of those people. What advice would you give someone interested in joining the roofing industry? Do it! There is no limit to your success. My first boss told me you will die not knowing everything there is to know about this industry. It drove me to always learn and keep my brain active. All these years later, I realized it was a metaphor for life.

What do you consider a waste of time? As a New Yorker, watching the Jets lose. But seriously, negativity and all that comes with it – I’d rather use my energy for good.

What’s your favorite vacation? Anyplace outside and new experiences with my family and those that I love. This is a beautiful planet and I wish I could see it all.

What’s your favorite pastime activity? Lately, I have been active and trying anything new just to find out what my favorite pastime activity is. I’m not sure that I’ve found it yet.

Where would be your ideal place to live and why? I love the water and the mountains and would love to live in a location that provides the best of both worlds. Mother nature’s beauty is calming and humbling.

What would surprise others to learn about you? I love to write and I’ve wanted to write a book ever since I was a kid. Interestingly enough, this is a passion my 16-yearold daughter shares and she is currently working on a book herself.
