FRSA President’s Greeting Well, we made it…sort of. The first page of FRSA’s Convention Program generally includes the President’s welcome to the annual Convention. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, things are definitely different this year. As you all know, after long consideration of all options, the Convention was canceled, so there will be no “welcome” letter. Instead, allow me to kick-off FRSA’s 2020 Expo Guide with a thank you letter for all who have helped and meant so much to me this year. First, I want to thank my wife, August. August held down the fort at home for the past year, as well as the previous years as I moved through the Executive Committee chairs. Between the Board meetings and conference calls, she allowed me to take on many added responsibilities. She also stepped way outside of her comfort zone and chaired the Ladies Committee this year. I could not have done this without her support. I also want to thank my parents, Keith and Diane Swope. My mom does so much for us. Whether it’s taking the boys to school several times a week or dropping everything for a last-minute babysitting tour of duty, she is always there for us. My dad has been holding down the company while I have been out for meetings. Between Florida Building Commission and FRSA meetings, the time has added up over the past few years, and I thank him for always being there. I want to thank FRSA staff members. Until you go through the chairs, you don’t really know how much they do behind the scenes on a day-to-day basis. They work extremely hard to make things run as seamlessly as possible. I want to thank all of our Board and Committee members. As you all know, FRSA is a member-driven Association that relies on volunteers. This association would not be what it is today without the hard work

and dedication of these individuals. Finally, I want to thank all of our exhibitors and sponsors that chose to donate or rollover funds to 2021. The financial stability of this Association is a direct result of your continued support. We created the Expo Guide to highlight this support and make it as easy as possible for you to connect with Florida FRSA President Brian Swope, roofing contractors. CPRC and First Lady August Contractors, Swope while you can’t attend in-person seminars or walk the aisles of the Expo hall this year, we’re bringing many of the components of the Annual Convention and Expo right to you. All 2020 seminars will be available online and many will focus on the new building code going into effect on December 31, 2020. See page 68 for information on how to register. FRSA’s Educational and Research Foundation has moved the annual Silent Auction online too. See page 12 for instructions on how to bid on vacation packages, restaurant gift cards, roofing materials and more. We couldn’t forget the family traditions of our annual event, so you’ll find some fun for the kids and some delicious recipes for the Ladies of FRSA in the Expo Guide too. And we’re still giving out cash. Check out the FRSA Square Challenge on page 24, visit the websites of the participating companies to answer trivia questions and send in your answers for a chance to win $1,000. FRSA members are also eligible for the $1,000 Grand Prize sponsored by the FRSA-SIF. See page 10 for details. In closing, I want to thank you all for the privilege of serving as President this past year. It has truly been an honor. Our industry is strong and we will gather again. I look forward to seeing you all at FRSA’s 99th Annual Convention and the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Expo, July 21-23, 2021, at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center. Until then, stay well.

S.T.A.R. Awards – The Spotlight Trophy for the Advancement of Roofing The Spotlight Trophy for the Advancement of Roofing is an awards program designed by FRSA to recognize members’ unique and outstanding projects. Three industry judges evaluate the entries for inclusion and outstanding performance in each category. This year, there were 48 submissions for placement in one of four categories: Low Slope, Steep Slope, Community Service and Craftsmanship. Judging criteria include aesthetics, special circumstances, unique project design, complexity of project, workmanship, teamwork, testimonials and creative problem solving along with other considerations. The

judges use before, in-progress and completed photos and videos to assist in the judging process.

Congratulations to the S.T.A.R. Award recipients and their team MVP featured on the following pages.

This year’s Shining Star Award, the overall best roofing project selected by the industry judges, was awarded to S&S Roofing Systems, Inc. for its Jaleo by José Andrés project at Disney Springs (see page 16 for more info). Congratulations!

Wallwood Scout Reservation Volunteer Re-Roof

The most important component of this volunteer project was unquestionably the people who donated their time, energy, resources and trade knowledge to help make this re-roof a success. The project was unique because the volunteer re-roof involved contractors and distributors who may be competitors in the business world but, during this operation, worked together as a team. The results were overwhelming. Challenges on the project included the size of the overall scope of work (three buildings), the many phases of construction and the logistics needed to schedule and equip the various contractors.

Charles E. Bennett VFW Post 1689

The most important components of the project was the broad support received from the NEFRSA members and the shingle contribution by Owens Corning. The project was unique in that it was the first major charitable project performed by this affiliate in 20plus years. The biggest challenge was to coordinate the laborers, supplies and vendors to accomplish the removal and replacement of the roof in a day’s time.

Miles of Smiles Ranch

What made this project so unique is the contribution and dedication of all the volunteers from each company that resulted in a sturdier structure for all that participate at this beautiful equine facility. This incredible foundation assists in the psychotherapy of veterans with PTSD and children with mental, behavioral and physical disabilities. Saint Raphael Roofing, Inc., along with partnering contracting company Dan Dodrill, President of Daniel Wayne Homes, Inc., and material supplier Jim Connolly, Union Corrugating, made this project possible.

Jaleo by José Andrés

The Jaleo project at Disney Springs was a skill-intensive project that required off-site fabrication of custom components that were field measured and delivered nightly for installation on third shift. The distinctive metal panels were shipped to the project and curved on site to conform to the multiple radii of the unique roof petals. Final placement of the panels required precise logistics to hoist them through the gaps in the petals for installation.

UF Griffin Floyd Hall

Historical University of Florida Griffin-Floyd Hall was built in 1912 and still had the original 107-year-old Ludowici tiles on the building, as well as a modified bitumen flat roof section that were both showing signs of wear. The university needed the original tiles removed, restored and reinstalled and needed the flat roof section replaced with a new Siplast modified roof, all while ensuring the project complied with local historical regulation codes. Perry Roofing Contractors completed this project by overcoming challenges related to the 14/12 pitch, installing new internal pole gutters and preserving original architectural metal. The iconic UF hall now has improved functionality, while preserving the historical nature of the building.

FSU Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Building

The FSU Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Building was a new construction project designed to match historical buildings on the Florida State University campus. Steep roof pitches of 6/12, 8/12 and 12/12 were a part of the project. These steepslope roof areas were roofed with a Ludowici clay roof tile three-color blend, which required hand sorting and blending of the tile colors. Another specialty component of the project was the use of custom-fabricated 20-ounce copper panel cladding for the building’s built-in gutter and soffit. Not only were the roof pitches steep for the tile installation but the precision installation of copper cladding on the built-in gutter and soffit all had to be performed six stories above ground level.

The project was 327 squares of coal tar pitch tearoff, was completed at night and 50 squares of the work lay below a steel frame about three feet above the roof surface. All drains were capped and covered, and new tapered insulation now drives the water to all-new scuppers and underground piping.

Riverside Hotel

The historic Riverside Hotel is a 12-story, 231-room hotel that has multiple roof levels. Its existing hotmopped modified 43,500-square-foot roofing system was at the end of its life. Advanced Roofing’s crew worked on the hotel’s 13 roof areas, which featured various deck types, so the scope of work differed throughout the entire project. All roof areas received a variation of the Carlisle 60-mil PVC Kee and 60-mil PVC Kee Fleeceback membranes that required applying both RhinoBond and fully-adhered roof systems. Advanced Roofing is proud to have completed the project on time, within budget and with no safety incidents or disruptions for hotel guests of this historic gem on the Ft. Lauderdale skyline.

The Current, An Autograph Collection

The Current, An Autograph Collection, consisted of a GAF 60 Mil Fleeceback TPO adhered to the lightweight insulated concrete deck and included a Siplast roof with a Guardian Paver system at the pool bar and upper deck. Martin Roofing Services fabricated all copings and trims in their shop. Space near the jobsite was tight, so the crew had to park over a mile away; someone would walk back and forth to get the trucks. The main garage was built sooner than they expected, which caused the crew to expedite some of the roofing areas in order to get a crane in to load the roofs that wouldn’t be accessible once the garage was built. Many of the roof areas were small and on the ocean side, with poor access to those areas.

First Church of Christ Scientist

The new roof on the First Church of Christ Scientist had to meet the exact requirements of the original roof, installed in 1931, in color, style and type of tile to become a historical landmark. With the help of Mike Anusbigian and Ludowici, the team from Complete Roofing Solutions was able to reproduce the original roof tile that was used 89 years ago. This was a labor-intensive job with only one access point. With the expertise of their team, they were able to complete this project on time and within budget. This project was also nominated for an award with the City of West Palm Beach’s historical department of development.

The Club at Mexico Beach

Due to devastation in Mexico Beach caused by Hurricane Michael, there were no hotels available for the team from Streamline Roofing and Construction, so the crew set up a camper onsite. This project was unique due to the extreme difficulty of all the hips and valleys and a roof pitch of 14/12 in most areas. All work on this project was completed on Genie lifts.

Ask our team of roofing experts about:

Todd Braid Project

Carroll Bradford Roofing installed a flat profile Boral Plantation concrete tile in Midnight Black to give the Todd Braid project roof new life. They used custom-fabricated copper for all metal accessories, including valley metal, drip edge, bird stop and flat window ledges. The crew also upgraded the copper bird stop to increase copper exposure at the eaves to ensure continuity with the metal. Copper pan sheets were installed under the garage window as well as another window on the south side of the home. Instead of two sheets seamsealed together, they were custom made to be one continuous sheet to provide a more waterproof and aesthetically appealing solution. With the slopes ranging from 7/12 to 10/12 and even areas of 12/12, it required specialty roof loading equipment, safety harnesses and extra property protection.

President’s Award Honors Keith Swope, CPRC The President’s Award is given every year to someone who goes above and beyond to assist the President throughout their year as President of the Association.

“I don’t know of anyone more deserving in the industry who has helped me more this past year than my father, Keith Swope, CPRC. Although, as many know, there are certain challenges of working with family, I have been able to count on him. It doesn’t matter if it’s filling in when I’m away for meetings, helping carry the load or for his advice on how to handle the responsibility of being the President of the Association, he has always been there. I can’t thank you enough, Dad!” — President Brian Swope, CPRC

Past President Keith Swope, CPRC

Trent Cotney Earns Memorial Heart Award The Earl Blank Memorial Heart Award is given each year to an FRSA associate member who most exemplifies the giving nature that the late Mr. Blank was known for in his work with the Association. The award criteria seem almost created for FRSA Legal Counsel Trent Cotney, Esquire who is proudly presented with this year’s award. Trent has been an active FRSA member for almost twenty years. He not only serves as Legal Counsel for the FRSA, but also for NRCA and multiple other roofing organizations. In meetings he is known to keep his opinions close to the vest unless an issue is raised that he feels FRSA needs his input on. When he addresses a committee or the FRSA Board of Directors, a hush falls over the room as his words always carry a lot of weight. Trent’s strong desire to give back has been shown in different ways at FRSA. He is beyond a generous counsel when dealing with Association legal matters and has established and fully funded a Governor Level Endowment through the FRSA Educational Foundation. He also directly funds a $2,000 scholarship payment for a deserving student each year through the Foundation Scholarship program. In addition, Trent funds a scholarship at his high school alma mater each year. What can you say about someone who is as obviously talented and caring as Trent Cotney? He is both intelligent and down to earth. He has a heart of gold and the desire to show it. Trent is a truly savvy entrepreneur who has grown his firm, Cotney Construction 26 |

Law into THE national law firm representing the interests of the roofing industry. He is a renowned speaker with the ability to put difficult concepts into laymen’s terms. All, and more, are true. Trent is familiar to most FRSA members and to all who are active in the Association. For those that know him well, here are a couple of interesting facts to share. Trent comes from an old Florida family and has a blue-collar blood line. His family owned a tire store in the Jacksonville area where Trent grew up. He attended Vanderbilt University where he achieved the rare distinction of “Double Commodore,” completing both his undergraduate and law degrees at the school. As noted, he likes to give and two of his favorite causes are veterans and dogs. The Humane Society and Black Dagger, a Tampa area group that engages and treats vets with PTSD are both huge beneficiaries of his generosity. Earl Blank would be proud. Congratulations, Trent!

Kaethe Schuster Earns Charlie Raymond Membership Award Kaethe Schuster is originally from the great state of Michigan where she grew up enjoying all things outdoors. She attended Northwood University where she earned a BBA in Business and Marketing. It was also at Northwood that Kaethe met her husband, Jeff. The Dow Chemical Company made a wise decision in 1999 when they hired Kaethe to work in their Customer Service Department where she quickly rose to Operations Management. As her career progressed, she and Jeff relocated to some familiar Dow company towns, Marietta, GA and Wilmington, IL, as part of the acquisition of Flexible Products by Dow. Kaethe has remained in the spray foam market ever since. In 2007, Kaethe returned home to Michigan to take on the role of Product Manager for Dow’s spray foam line. She was named Marketing Director for the line in 2010 where she orchestrated significant growth of the spray foam division. Over the course of her career, she has received multiple sales awards for exceptional performance within the Dow and Dupont organizations. We’re told that those awards are in recognition of her outstanding drive, talents and dynamic personality. We are fortunate that Kaethe and Jeff relocated to Ponte Vedra Beach in 2015, where she took on her current role as Sales Director and transitioned the business unit to the new Dupont organization. She has been involved with FRSA since her arrival in Florida.

She currently serves on the FRSA Codes and Membership Committees, where her input is valued. Kaethe is always looking for ways to promote FRSA membership to associate members and is known for not only coming up with good ideas, but for taking action to bring those ideas to fruition. Her can-do attitude is noticed by all who meet her and especially by the FRSA staff. When we spoke to Kaethe’s industry peers, the adjectives that were most used to describe her were “professional,” “honest” and “talented.” She still enjoys the outdoors whenever possible and, – although the outdoors is considerably different in Florida than in Michigan – kayaking, biking and fishing remain free time interests. FRSA is proud to present the 2020 Charlie Raymond Membership Award to Kaethe Schuster for her efforts in expanding FRSA Associate membership and we are hopeful that this will be a working partnership for years to come. Congratulations, Kaethe!

Angela Bryans Becomes FRSA’s Newest Honorary Member Someone must be first at everything. New Honorary Member Angela Bryans fit the bill when she became the first woman trustee of the FRSA Self Insurers Fund in the early 1990s and served in that position for eight years. Her company prior to retirement, A Bartlett Roofing in Gainesville, was an SIF member for the last thirty years they were open. A spotless safety record must have factored into her selection as the person to break the gender barrier among the Board of Trustees. That and the fact that she is one sharp lady who knows her business. Originally from Miami, she and husband Bill, who were high school sweethearts, attended the University of Florida at the same time. Gainesville obviously got in their blood as they completed school, but never left. Like many young people, Angela and Bill initially struggled to find their way but found their niche when a local roofing company was being sold and they took the plunge. Learning the roofing business on the fly is never easy, but that is just what the young couple did at the beginning. A successful roofing contracting business with a stellar reputation in North Florida was the result. Angela was very involved in the roofing industry. She is a founding member of FRSA Affiliate, North Central Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association (NCFRSA) where she has been a President and officer multiple times, along with being the NCFRSA Affiliate Representative on the FRSA Board

of Directors. She served as FRSA’s First Lady during the 1992-1993 year and has also served on several FRSA committees over the years including Membership and Convention. She also served on a couple committees that are now inactive, the Drug Awareness and Internet Committees. The FRSA Educational and Research Foundation has benefited from the Bryans’ generosity through an Endowment Fund pledge and Silent Auction donations over the years. Angela and Bill have also been known to give Florida vs. Florida State football tickets to FSU friends, even though they bleed orange and blue. Keeping sporting events in perspective is not easy for everyone, but the Bryans make it seem effortless. The Association has grown into the successful organization it is today through the diligence and efforts of dedicated volunteers like Angela. FRSA and the roofing industry are better for her involvement. Honorary Membership is thereby in order and an expression of our gratitude for her years of involvement. Congratulations, Angela!

Bruce Manson Awarded Life Membership The qualifications for FRSA Life Membership include being an FRSA Past President and member for at least 25 years. Bruce Manson founded Manson Roofing Inc. in Bradenton in the mid-1970s, has been a member since 1985 and served as FRSA President in 2019. Bruce was born in Wisconsin and moved to Bradenton at the tender age of two, where he has lived ever since. He is the second of five children, four of whom are boys, so Mrs. Manson must have had her hands full. He graduated from Bradenton High School and attended Oglethorpe University and St. Leo College, where he had the great fortune to meet Barbara, his future bride. Many contractors struggle at the beginning of their careers and Bruce was no different. He and Barbara worked together from the beginning and there are stories told of Barbara driving around doing bill collections in the old family station wagon with a baby on her hip! Bruce’s entrepreneurial spirit has guided the company’s growth from that point until today and Manson Roofing Inc. is one of the most successful and well-respected companies on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Along the way, Bruce and Barbara raised five great kids together and are now the proud grandparents of two more. We’ve been told that the grandchildren believe Bruce walks on water and that he spoils them

as only a loving grandparent can. Bruce has led an active life outside of running his company. He has served his Affiliate, the SarasotaManatee Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association (SMRSMCA), as President and is involved in numerous other community groups ranging from the local Better Business Council to the Bradenton Board of Art League. Bruce chose Our Daily Bread of Bradenton, a personal favorite, for his Charity of Choice during his year as FRSA President. He is an avid golfer, playing as often as he can and enjoys an occasional day of fishing. Bruce has served on FRSA Committees and the Board of Directors for over twenty years. He is generally soft spoken, but members and FRSA staff have learned over the years that what he says is worth listening to and that he always adds to whatever topic is being discussed. Bruce Manson not only qualifies for Life Membership; he has earned it. Congratulations, Bruce!

Life Membership Awarded to Billy Cone Many of Florida’s prominent roofing contractors are from somewhere other than our great state. This includes William “Billy” Cone who was born and raised along with three sisters in Oklahoma. He grew up in a blue-collar environment and worked in oil fields as a rigger during his younger years. He also learned quite a bit about roofing as a second occupation. In 1988, Billy moved to Florida and started his sunshine state career working for Best Roofing in Ft. Lauderdale. After cutting his teeth on South Florida roofing, he left Best Roofing and started RoofTech Roofing and Sheet Metal, a South Florida mainstay since its founding. During those same years, Billy became involved with FRSA as a valuable member on several committees, but most importantly, on the FRSA Codes Committee. There were very few contractors in the state who had the range of knowledge on the roofing code that Billy did during the years he was active with the Association. He was always a willing volunteer on the FRSA Code Subcommittee that spent countless hours every year on code modifications and making sure the Florida Building Code is as contractor-friendly as possible. He was FRSA’s “eyes and ears” at International Code Council meetings for many years. He would sometimes attend all ten days of those meetings,

including some long 14-hour days, making sure he didn’t miss anything that would affect roofers in Florida. Rare dedication indeed. He also served on the Roofing Technical Advisory Committee of the Florida Building Commission for many years, where he was happy to share his knowledge with anyone. Billy’s leadership qualities led him to be nominated for the FRSA Executive Committee where he served as President in 2007. In 2009, his service was further recognized by the FRSA membership with the presentation of the Campanella Award at the Association’s Annual Convention. Billy was joined on stage by wife, Lynn, his three children and his grandchildren for the well-deserved recognition. Essentially retired now, Billy and Lynn spend most of their time on the family farm in Kentucky. By vote of the FRSA membership, Life Membership is now another honor the Association would like to bestow. Congratulations, Billy!

Florida Roofing & Sheet Metal Expo Guide | w w w . F l o r i d a R o o f . c o m

Tom Gans Awarded Honorary Membership When FRSA was preparing to sell the Winter Park building it occupied from 1981 to 2014, FRSA leadership needed to have sound knowledge on the current state of the building’s roof before prospective buyers did. While there were (and are) hundreds of FRSA members qualified to give a reliable opinion of the roof’s condition, one name was foremost in the minds of FRSA staff, Tom Gans, TCG Roof Inspections, Tampa. Tom drove from Tampa to the building one day, spent some time on the roof and then gave FRSA his report. It indicated a few minor repairs needed to be done before selling but nothing major as had been feared. The building was placed on the market after Tom’s suggested repairs were completed and sold for $200,000 more than the FRSA Board had authorized as acceptable! And yes, Tom, it is too late to ask for a cut. Tom was born in Ohio and grew up in Winchester, Va. He attended National Business College in Roanoke and eventually found his way to Florida. Tom’s roofing career has, like many, touched different facets of the industry. He was a Koppers sales representative, an employee of Milbrand Roofing in Miami and a contractor partner in Gulfstates Industries in New Port Richey. After selling his interest in the roofing company, he started TCG Roof Inspections, now a fixture in the Tampa roof consulting

community. He was very fortunate to end up in the Tampa Bay area because it was there that he met his lovely wife, Donna. They have two children and a granddaughter, which is probably why Tom’s favorite thing is family get togethers. He also enjoys golf whenever he has the time, which is less often than he would like. Tom has volunteered with FRSA as a member of the Codes and Roof Tile Committees for many years, where his knowledge and experience are an important component of what the committee accomplishes – and they accomplish a lot. Tom and Donna attend most FRSA functions and Tom especially enjoys the annual FRSA Convention. FRSA Honorary Members are nominated by the membership in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the Association. Tom Gans certainly meets the criteria and we are pleased to award him Honorary Membership. Congratulations, Tom!

Florida Roofing & Sheet Metal Expo Guide | w w w . F l o r i d a R o o f . c o m

Manny Oyola, Jr. Wins Enthusiasm Award The Bieler “Enthusiasm Gets It Done” Award was established in 1994 by Bill Bieler, Bieler Roofing Supply. The award recognizes annually an individual with spirit, passion and drive for FRSA or, as the award so aptly states, enthusiasm. This year’s award winner was an easy choice. Since 2006, Manuel “Manny” Oyola, Jr., Eagle Roofing Products Florida LLC, Boca Raton, emulates exactly what the Bieler family had in mind when they established the award. Like so many others, sometime during the mid-twentieth century, a father moved his young family from Puerto Rico to New York City. The family included a son, Manny, who was raised in a multi-ethnic neighborhood where he developed a love for Italian food and, of all things, opera. We at FRSA are most fortunate that this son found his way to the roofing industry in Florida. Family is the most important aspect of Manny’s life and, over the years, he and wife Arlene have raised four children and seven grandchildren that he has affectionally dubbed “the terrorists.” Manny’s love for his family is evident to any who have had the opportunity to discuss anything important with him. But his love for young people goes beyond his family as he volunteers to work with disadvantaged youth in his area, taking them on hunting and fishing trips regularly. Manny began his Florida career as a roofing contractor in South Florida in the 1980s. His company worked as a licensed sub for many large contractors during those years. After many years as a licensed roofing contractor, he shifted focus and established a career in the roof tile manufacturing arena, where he has worked since. With the support of Eagle Roofing Products, Manny has worked tirelessly to educate the roofing industry. Since he became actively involved with FRSA, he has made quite an impression on FRSA staff and everyone he has served with in the Association. He is also active at the local level, where he is a Past President of the Palm Beach Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association as well as a member of the Palm Beach County Board of Adjustments and Appeals. His passion for the industry is just another aspect of the enthusiastic way he approaches life.

Manny is an FRSA Honorary Member and past winner of the Earl Blank Memorial Heart Award. He is Chairman of the Codes Subcommittee whose members volunteer a tremendous amount of time reviewing and proposing code modifications during each code renewal cycle. He is a regular attendee at Florida Building Commission and Roofing Technical Advisory Committee meetings where his input on roof tile items is invaluable. His knowledge of all things tile is well known throughout the industry. Manny has been a positive presence at industry meetings and functions for many years. For his undying support, FRSA is proud to present Manny Oyola, Jr. the 2020 “Enthusiasm Gets It Done” Award. Congratulations, Manny!

mammoth results. As a SOPREMA® project, it was vital that the Seminole Hard Rock® Hotel & Casino project in Hollywood, Florida, maintain completion deadlines and remain on budget. Florida Roofing & Sheet Metal Expo Guide | w w w . F l o r i d a R o o f . c o m

Meet the FRSA Team Lisa Pate, FRSA Executive Director FRSA is a full-service Association offering member benefits and customer service, industry-specific educational programs, code and technical support, meetings and events and publications. Through the Credit Union, we offer equipment loans, project financing and banking services. FRSA is a one-stop shop for the services and support a contractor needs for business. It’s FRSA’s team of staff members who make all these services possible. Between the Association (FRSA) and the Credit Union, we’re a small staff of nine full-time employees and one consultant, each person with specific skill sets that make the whole organization run smoothly. As I started to write this article, I asked each staff person to tell me what they liked about their position and working for FRSA and to provide me with their favorite quote. Let’s meet the team.

Michelle Ospina, Office Manager/ Receptionist

Michelle is new to FRSA, having been with us for only three months. She began just as COVID-19 started and was part of a very limited onsite staff. Since we were shortstaffed, Michelle learned very quickly how to handle many of our daily functions: phones, mail, deposits and database operations. She is responsible for overseeing our office, handling the vendors, office orders, electronic equipment, machinery, office supplies, mailings, phone systems and databases. She assists both the Executive Director and the Director of Convention and Expo, as well as other staff members on an as-needed basis. Part of Michelle’s responsibilities include working on Convention and Expo items. During the interview process, we prepared her for the need to hit the ground running, to get up to speed on all things Convention because this is a large event and something we needed to get in front of. Ironically, we’re now working on undoing items that have been worked on over the past ten months and learning new steps for conducting a virtual convention. Michelle stated, “I’ve been here for a few months and, while unique due to circumstances, it has been great. I’m still just as excited as I was the first day to

80 |

have been given the opportunity to join the FRSA Team. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow here along with mastering my role and hopefully exceeding expectations sooner rather than later. I have a hospitality background that’s just as in-depth as my real estate experience and this is still the most professional, yet lighthearted environment I’ve had the pleasure of being in.” If she thinks we’re fun, wait until she meets our members!

John Hellein, Director of Educational & Research Foundation

John has been with FRSA for eight years, beginning as the Editor of Florida Roofing magazine. Over the years, John transitioned from a staff person to a consultant, laying out the graphics for the magazine and creating promotional material for the Convention and Expo. He came back full-time in March as Foundation Director. His duties include staff liaison for the Education Foundation, the Endowment Board of Governors and the Worker Training Subcommittees. John’s strengths include technology skills, which have come in extremely handy as we move Convention events online. He’s created the Online Auction and worked with speakers to record and transition seminars from a classroom setting to online format. When asked about his job, he stated, “Seeing people move from problems to solutions is one of the great things that I like about working at FRSA: members and staff working together in a thousand different ways make it possible for people to provide for their families through the Florida roofing industry.” One of his favorite quotes comes from John Lennon, “Everything will be OK in the end. If it’s not OK, it’s not the end.” John’s light-hearted personality and humor keep us laughing and mindful to not take ourselves too seriously.

Kelsey O’Hearne, Ad Sales Manager

Kelsey has been with FRSA for about three years and her main job is to sell advertising for Florida Roofing magazine, but her speed and efficiency enable her to assist with other programs and services. She handles our social media and supports programs for the

Florida Roofing & Sheet Metal Expo Guide | w w w . F l o r i d a R o o f . c o m

Convention and Expo. Kelsey started off as our Office Manager, but with her outgoing personality and positive attitude, we knew she was destined for other challenges. At the end of last year, we brought Florida Roofing magazine ad sales inhouse for Kelsey to tackle. She also has great technology skills and was able to bring the magazine to life electronically. Kelsey also works on various parts of the Convention and Expo, creating social and electronic media, in addition to handling the mobile event app. “What I enjoy most about working for FRSA is the small family it has given me. Our staff cares for one another, we look out for each other and our members do the same for us. There is nothing like that sense of community. They say, ‘It takes a village,’ and it’s nice to have that village with the FRSA family,” noted Kelsey.

Maria Armas, Director of Member Services

Maria started with FRSA six years ago and her two main areas of responsibility include bringing in new members and working with our Affiliates. We consider both the lifeblood of our Association. Over the years, she has revised membership marketing material, researched new affinity programs and created new promotions for membership. The “Sorry Charlie” membership campaign was one of the most successful and engaging challenges to date. She works with all 13 Affiliate groups, keeping the lines of communication open and sharing information. Maria is also the staff liaison for the Young Professionals Council working with the under 40 crowd. They’ve begun recording Podcasts that can be found on our Spotify channel. Recently, I called on Maria’s creative talents to create ads, artwork for the website and social media platforms and graphics for the magazine. When asked about her position, Maria replied, “I like to work here because I love to interact with FRSA members, making sure they are aware of their benefits. I love my job not only because I get to have a yellow chair (for her office in the new building),

but because it lets me be creative.” Her favorite quote is “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

Cheryl Sulock, CMP, CSEP, Director of Convention & Expo

Cheryl plans FRSA’s Convention and Expo in addition to the Board of Directors quarterly meetings and is staff liaison to the Convention and Ladies Committees. Before starting at FRSA, Cheryl worked for the Orange County Convention Center as the Event Manager for FRSA’s trade show. With a stroke of good fortune, Cheryl was looking for a change and we had just the position for her! She’s been with us for seven years and I’m thankful for all she does. A huge portion of Cheryl’s time is spent planning the Convention and Expo, making sure all the individual components of the event come together successfully: everything from event contracts, promotional material, venue set-up, vendor, exhibitors, social events, sponsorships and sporting tournaments to the Ladies and Kids Programs. I’m very grateful she’s so organized! When asked about her job, Cheryl replied, “I love seeing all of the components of our annual event and a year’s worth of planning fall into place onsite at FRSA’s Convention and Expo. Working with FRSA’s exhibitors and sponsors to create the largest and best regional roofing expo in the country is amazing.”

Mike Reed, CPA, Controller and General Manager

Mike is FRSA’s money man and has been here for over 28 years. He prepares and oversees all aspects of the financials for the Association, Services Corp. (our for-profit entity for Florida Roofing magazine), Educational and Research Foundation, the Foundation Endowment and the Political Action Committee. Mike also handles the investment accounts for all entities and he’s as conservative with our money as he is his own. When he first started with FRSA, our financials were a mess

FRSA – A Family Tradition |

81

and an accurate financial statement had not been produced in some time. He quickly got up to speed on our many entities, and within a month, had us on track. Mike is an FRSA Honorary Member and a Florida CPA. Many of you have probably met Mike at our annual Convention as he oversees the registration desk and is the staff person manning the clay shooting and pistol tournaments onsite. Mike is staff liaison to the Governmental Affairs, Advisory and Executive Committees. Mike also serves as my sounding board when I have questions or concerns about certain topics. It’s with his support that I’m able to navigate tough issues. He has a great sense of humor and often helps me put concerns in perspective with a witty comment. “I have enjoyed working at FRSA over the years because the Association represents the good guys who are often competing with less-than-scrupulous competition,” stated Mike.

Mike Silvers, CPRC, Director of Technical Services

After working with Mike as a member for 30-plus years, it was a pleasant surprise when he agreed to work with FRSA as a consultant. I have worked with Mike in just about every facet of the Association, not only as a member, but when he served as FRSA President in 1994. There are very few people who know the Florida Building Code as well as Mike does and I was elated when he came on board as our Technical Director. Mike is a Life Member, Certified Professional Roofing Contractor (CPRC) and a Campanella Award Recipient. Mike is passionate about FRSA and has volunteered his time in the code’s arena for as long as I can remember and is a well-respected figure at the Florida Building Commission meetings. He serves as liaison to the Codes and Roof Tile Committees and Codes Subcommittee and is willing to share his vast knowledge with anyone. FRSA members often call Mike with their code questions or when they are facing difficulty with a local building inspector. When asked about his position with FRSA, Mike commented, “After more than 40 years as a member and regular FRSA volunteer, the challenges and rewards that come with my new position are numerous. The opportunity to share my perspective and the knowledge I’ve gained as a contractor with our contractor and associate members, architects, engineers, building officials, regulators, students and consumers is very rewarding. Our industry is becoming more 82 |

complex every day and having sources of information on code and technical issues is critical.”

Lisa Pate, CEM, Executive Director

I have the honor of serving as the Executive Director overseeing FRSA’s programs and services. I’ve been with the Association for 35 years, starting in the accounting department while I was still in college. Over the years, I’ve had the good fortune to work in every department and with every FRSA committee. Our members are like a second family to me. I’ve watched many of them grow up and take over their family businesses where I knew their fathers and grandfathers. I’m a hands-on manager and assist staff wherever I’m needed most – whether it’s working on the Convention and Expo (my favorite area) or gathering articles for the magazine. Our industry has so many wonderful and generous people that are more than happy to share their knowledge, donate time or write an article, making our jobs as staff much easier. My favorite saying at work is “Teamwork makes the dream work,” and I love the way our staff pitches in to accomplish so much. I like to remind them: we work hard, we play hard. I’m thankful for their fun-loving, outgoing personalities.

Adrienne Paul, FRSA Credit Union Member Service Representative

If you’ve ever called the Credit Union, it’s a safe bet that you’ve spoken with Adrienne. Her bubbly personality makes her the perfect choice for Credit Union customer service, whether assisting walk up shared branching customers or those members she deals with remotely. A big part of Adrienne’s job is assisting members with applying for and processing loan applications. She has been with the Credit Union for almost seven years and is one of two staff people who run this successful business. If you haven’t utilized the Credit Union, give Adrienne a call and let her bring you up to speed on all it has to offer you, your family, your employees and even your customers.

I asked Adrienne what she likes about her position and she replied, “I like working here because of the positive environment and great coworkers. I like getting to speak with and know our members.” Her favorite quote is “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

She works closely with the Credit Union Board of Directors and the Supervisory Committee who review all loan documents. Susan started at the Credit Union the week before Hurricane Irma hit Florida and worked diligently to make sure member services continued uninterrupted as we moved to a remote location to operate. “What I most enjoy about managing the Credit Union isFrequency working Discounts in a smaller environment. It gives me the opportunity to get to know and work with the members on a one-on-one basis,” stated Susan. FRSA President Brian Swope, CPRC was certainly the prankster back in 1989. You’ll find him sticking out his tongue above. As a third generation FRSA President, FRSA truly is a family tradition for the Swope family. His grandfather, Morris Swope, CPRC, served as the Association President in 1988 and his father, Keith Swope, CPRC, served as the Association President in 2008. Pictured at right is Brian with his two sons, Luke and Evan, who participate each year in FRSA’s Kids’ Program. Perhaps a fourth generation FRSA President someday? 84 |
