HUGE SUCCESS FOR BARROWFORD’S FIRST E DATE SATURDAY 4 JULY 2015 LIFESTYLE FESTIVAL! th
Bringing together local businesses and the local community, as well as attracting visitors from further afield, it is safe to say that the inaugural Barrowford Lifestyle Festival was a huge success. Around 10,000 people joined in the fun and thanks to them and event sponsors, over £15,000 was raised which will go straight to supporting local community projects. The family fun day with its fresh, modern approach was packed with displays, attractions, games and the obligatory food and drink court pleasing people of all ages! From edible art to bowling and vintage cars, to agility races thanks to the Burnley FC community, this just scratches the surface of what was on offer and has certainly set a strong benchmark for next year’s event which is already being planned.

At the heart of the Festival was the Food and Fair which featured the very best of local food and drink (and a bit of an international flavour as well). To top it all off bands and acts took centre stage to keep the crowds entertained into the early evening with the weather on side too.
The money raised from the day is being distributed amongst local causes to support community projects and those already identified include the thorough cleaning of the lake in Barrowford Park and the toilet facilities in the bowling green pavilion.

My living room only has one long and thin window and doesn’t let in much light. What is the best way to brighten up the room? Firstly the most important thing is to make sure that nothing obstructs the natural light that you do get flowing into your room. Televisions on a bracket on the wall are very modern and helps get items off the floor and from in front of windows. If you have curtains or blinds make sure that they are fully open, where possible, in the day and invest in some beautiful curtain tie backs which will ensure that no part of the glass is covered. Mirrors are also a great way of reflecting natural light so have one hanging on the wall to help the light bounce around the room and mirrored or glass coasters also work well. A change in furniture isn’t always an option but if you do have dark coloured sofas or coffee tables try adding some cream cushions or a pale rug – brightening up a room is also a great way to make a positive and relaxing atmosphere.

What’s the best way to de-clutter? Whether you need to de-clutter because you have guests arriving for the Christmas period or you need a complete overhaul because you can’t get into the room, there are a few simple steps to get you started! Firstly get an empty box and label it charity shop and have a bin bag in hand! Choose a section of the room to start with; under your bed or in a cupboard, and have some upbeat music playing in the background which will help energise you and make the time pass quicker! Anything that you come across that you haven’t used in a while, whether that’s because you no longer love it or even forgot you had it, put in the box for the charity shop and anything that could be deemed as rubbish to someone else, a broken picture frame or a pile of cards from your birthday three years ago, bin!
What’s the best way to decorate a bathroom? A bathroom is probably the room we spend the least amount of time in so it can be easy to forget about it when it comes to decoration! There are a number of ways that you can keep it simple but make it look just as lovely as the other rooms in your home. A mirror is a practical necessity for any bathroom and can also make the room look bright, especially if you invest in one with mood lighting built in. Tiling the room on one wall is a fun way to get colour or pattern into the room whilst still looking modern and having shells or pebbles that you’ve collected from a holiday helps to brighten the mood and give the room a natural feel.

JOIN SANTA FOR A CHARITY FUN RUN! This year Petty’s is proud to be one of the sponsors of the Santa Fun Run that is being held in Barnoldswick by Lancashire-based cancer support charity, Bosom Friends. Taking place on Sunday, 6th December, the Santa Fun Run will start at West Craven High School with the finishing line at Barnoldswick Town Square and will see a predicted 300 locals walk, jog and run to raise money for the Barnoldswick and Earby charity. Sharon Hurst at Bosom Friends said; “As the fun run involves local businesses and people of Barnoldswick the community spirit on the day is amazing from people volunteering their time, participating as a Santa or even watching and cheering everyone on. “We’re very grateful to Petty’s for being a sponsor as obtaining sponsorship is so important for us. The vital money raised from the event goes towards continuing to provide support for people affected by cancer in the Pendle, Craven and Ribble Valley areas.”

JOSH SET TO SPREAD FESTIVE CHEER Petty’s very own Sales Negotiator, Josh Hindle is set to spread some festive cheer this December as he performs at the Roughlee Christmas lunch, hosted by Roughlee Parish Council.

Petty’s has given Josh the afternoon off from work so he can take to the stage to perform at the exclusive event for Roughlee’s over 60 citizens. Josh is already renowned in the area as a wedding singer and performer and coincidentally he recently took on the leading role at Pendle Hippodrome’s version of The Wedding Singer! Roughlee Parish Council has hosted the Christmas lunch every year to show its commitment to the community and it is free for any member of the Parish. Other guests are welcome to accompany
family members and friends if they wish, however, there is a nominal contribution if they don’t meet the criteria of being over 60 or a Parish member. The event sees a three course festive meal served with wine and over the years has seen the welcome attendance of the Mayor of Pendle. All the children from Roughlee Church of England Primary School attend to entertain the crowd singing a selection of Christmas carols so is certainly an event that brings the community of all ages together.

The team, which calls themselves Petty’s in the Pendle Ladies Netball league remain top of the table (as we went to print!) and over the years have actually been crowned champions on a number of occasions. TOP SPORTING ACCOLADE Petty’s has once again pledged its support to nurturing local talent by sponsoring the Pendle Sports Awards 2015. Now in their 10th year, the awards organised by Pendle Leisure Trust and Leader Times Newspapers, has a rich tradition of honouring, supporting and encouraging some of the borough’s best sporting talent.
They do say that most business is done on the golf course so it was a welcome sight to see 16 teams of businesses from the area ‘pitch’ up to Nelson golf club for some golf course capers. Petty’s was one of the 16 teams competing but it was the team from Farnworth Rose that held the trophy aloft coming home winners.
The awards are aimed at rewarding both sporting excellence and those who operate behind the scenes to make sure all our sporting heroes can actually take to the field of play. This year, Ian Bythell presented the award for Best Sporting Team to Pendle Forest Hockey at a black tie event held at the ACE Centre.
The real winners on the day were Pendleside Hospice as a whopping £530 was raised by the teams with a raffle on the day.

news FROM FOOTBALL PRO TO PETTY’S DIRECTOR Not many of you know but Petty’s very own Simon Westwell is a former football professional and now we are delighted to announce that he assumes a new position, that of Director with Petty’s. The firm has seen Simon carve a successful career for himself since he joined over eight years ago and with his unwavering loyalty to the business, has now been appointed to a Director. Your Village Life magazine caught up with Simon to see what this role means to him. Simon said: “From day one, I have had the support from the Petty’s team and settled immediately into my role. With any successful company you need good staff around you and I have that in abundance so a big thank you goes to them. The lettings industry is challenging so I like to think that being made a Director is a reward for all the hard work and loyalty over the years. I hope it also encourages other members of staff, as it shows that opportunities are certainly there with Petty’s for those with the commitment to achieve it.” Speaking to Simon, we couldn’t let the topic of football go un-discussed! Those ardent fans may
have recognised his name since he joined the line up at Petty’s but for those that don’t know, we thought we would take this opportunity to also share his story as he reaches another milestone in his career. Simon actually played professionally for Preston North End from 1978 - 1983 where he clocked up over 80 games and even captained the squad at just 21 years old. It was his time with Colne Dynamoes after that where his football prowess continued and where he had the honour of playing, and even winning, on the hallowed turf at the original Wembley stadium. He took to the

Wembley pitch once more in 1996 with Clitheroe FC...but we aren’t allowed to talk about that one (they lost)! Simon has since hung up his boots but that hasn’t stopped him being recognised and reminded of the good times by clients! The meaning of ‘fulltime’ changed for Simon turning into full-time employment and now, having a spent a period with other agencies, is celebrating success off the pitch with the appointment as Director.
The move sees Kevin return to his roots having spent time in Skipton with Skipton Building Society and we caught up with him to see what this means to him. “After my time away and qualifying in 2004 I spent two years at HSBC before settling into mortgage advice with Entwistle Green in Colne. Thanks to the people in the area I was consistently one of Entwistle Green’s top performers always giving 100% commitment to my clients, some of which have now become personal friends. “Colne was great for me; I enjoyed the town and the people and got a real ‘buzz’ out of helping people move into the home of their dreams. The satisfaction I felt from this role made all the hard work and study worthwhile. ON OUR DOORSTEP! The world’s top cyclists and tens of thousands of spectators came together to descend on the Ribble Valley and Pendle in September, when the two boroughs hosted Stage 2 of the AVIVA Tour of Britain 2015. International cyclists riding for some of the world’s best and biggest cycling teams challenged each other over eight days but it was day two on Monday 7th September that the wheels were seen turning across our area in a hotly contested race. Tackling the challenging 162km route the teams which included Olympic and World Champions went from Clitheroe to Colne, taking in the Nick O’Pendle climb, Whalley, Longridge, Dunsop Bridge, Slaidburn, Barnoldswick, Earby, Clitheroe, Whalley again and then Nelson before finishing in spectacular fashion in Colne town centre. 16 | YourVillageLife
Petr Vakoc made the Ardennes style route his own after going solo with around 20km remaining on the stage and taking not only the stage glory, but the overall race lead by 11 seconds over Movistar’s JJ Lobato. The previous day’s winner, Elia Viviani, finished over 21 minutes back on the day’s winner along with British sprinter Mark Cavendish. The race certainly gathered pace locally and it was great to see so many turn out and line the streets in support. Let’s hope the cyclists come back again soon as not only was it great to watch but it has been reported that there was a significant boost to the local economy and leisure industry too.

AnneMarie Callan
“Everyone can follow their dream,” said retiree, AnneMarie Callan, who is the author of the Skellee Superheroes, a series of books for children aged 3 to 8 and where one book is actually based on Barrowford where Petty’s has an office. Your Village Life was delighted to catch up with AnneMarie to delve deeper into her life and of course, her books and affinity with Barrowford. AnneMarie, was born in Ireland and now lives between Barrowford and Javea in Spain with her partner, who she first met 50 years ago. They lost contact and found each other again three years ago. Apart from travelling and family time, she enjoys painting, reading and working online with her websites and books. Her first grandchild inspired her to tell the Skellee stories from her imagination. As more grandchildren were born, her stories grew too! Taking inspiration from the stunning surroundings we have on our doorstep, Barrowford Park is the setting of one of her Skellee Superhero stories, ‘Superhero Harvey Skellee Rescues a Sad Duck’. “Walking around Barrowford Park inspired me to write the story about the Barrowford ducks. I fell in love with the park, with its flowering wall borders, the spaciousness plus the fact that there are numerous activities for all the family to enjoy. A perfect place to relax and unwind,” said AnneMarie. 18 | YourVillageLife
Each Skellee story highlights the need for compassion and helps children to empathize with the dangerous situations they are reading about. The fact that all the stories have a happy ending, due to the Superheroes using their amazing ‘super powers’, is an added benefit for children and with the question and answer quiz included, they also help children develop their comprehension skills. Never having painted before, illustrating the books herself in watercolours, is an ongoing and new found ‘talent’. She admits that she is surprised that nobody has complained about her art but keeps her fingers crossed that they will keep on forgiving her attempts. Her greatest wish is that, at bedtime, when a child has been read a Skellee story or reads one to themselves, they fall asleep peacefully and maybe even dream of their own Skellee Superhero coming to their rescue. Eventually there will be 26 Skellee Superhero stories, working from A to Z.
The last one published was J for Jack and currently they are all available on Kindle. It is an exciting time for AnneMarie as she is now preparing for them to go into print and also has plans in place for extending the offering with colouring books and other Skellee products for children. Always looking at doing something different to engage with the children, the last book was created around an online contest giving people the chance to get a starring role in the story for their child or grandchild. People were asked to simply log into the website and a name was randomly chosen with the winner becoming special guests within the book as well as receiving other Skellee goodies. A Wine For Every Season For many people, the change in seasons comes with a change in wine preferences. The crisp whites we crave in summer, especially in the beer gardens or outside on the patio give way to heartier reds in the autumn and winter months. It’s not to everyone’s palette though as for some, personal preference and their affinity to either red, white, sparkling or rose will never falter. Their subtle flavours and textures are a natural complement to one another and with endless varieties of each, there are matchmaking opportunities aplenty. Has that whet your appetite? Try this combination but better still, why not have fun trying to find your own combinations to suit your taste buds? Acidic, crisp wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio work effortlessly with young cheeses such as goat’s cheese and mozzarella.

Hollywood COMES TO LANCASHIRE! A house that is currently for sale with Petty’s was recently the film set for an exciting new BBC One drama starring Reservoir Dogs actor Tim Roth.
‘Reg’ which is due to hit the small screen in 2016, tells the true story of Reg Keys who goes on a journey of grief and defiance following his son’s death in Iraq, and was filmed at homeowner Harry Devonport’s house in Higher Briercliffe, Blacko. “The cast and film crew spent a full six days of filming, actually inside the house, from early in the morning until 11pm at night.” said Mr Devonport. “I met the cast including Tim Roth on the first day of filming. I was amazed at how focused Tim was on what we was there to do. He played a character with a Birmingham accent and kept the accent up, and stayed in character, even when he wasn’t working, when we were just having a chat. He truly lived and breathed what he was doing.” The four bedroom detached family home was the perfect location for filming as the story needed a rural location with panoramic views of the countryside but logistics also played a big part and the location needed to be near a motorway, and the M65 is just a 10 minute drive. “We actually stayed in the house in the evenings once the filming had finished and we slept in the bedroom so had to make sure we didn’t touch or move anything for continuity reasons”, added Mr Devonport whose house is currently for sale for £675,000. “The filming actually opened my eyes to what a film set is like and what actually goes into making a drama. “We’ll be sad to leave but looking to downsize and can take the memories with us, not everyone can say their house was part of a film.” Reg is a 90 minute BBC One film production as part of BBC Drama and LA Productions and will be on screens next year so keep a look out!

Bistro 7 gets the Thumbs Up! Right opposite our Barrowford office, we couldn’t help but notice how popular Bistro 7 has become since the new owners took over so we thought we would give it a whirl ourselves to see what all the fuss is about! A warm welcome awaits as you walk through the door into more of a café style bistro adorned with lovely artwork available from its integral shop, Presentations. It isn’t a large venue but the use of the available space makes for a comfortable dining experience none the less and we were swiftly settled into our seats overlooking a tempting display of homemade cakes and scones – they would need to wait though as we tried to divert our attention to the lunch menu! The over-sized ‘drum’ lighting shades, banquet seating on the wall sides and eclectic mix of shabby chic décor including an oversized clock all add to the atmosphere and we couldn’t resist ordering a glass of chilled Sauvignon Blanc each as we perused the menu whilst taking in the surroundings. A tempting range of sandwiches and paninis as well as the house specials are not done justice on the menu and have to be seen to be fully appreciated! Platter after platter came out of the kitchen on contemporary wooden ‘paddles’ which have by all accounts become somewhat of a signature dish for Bistro 7, along with its penchant for Gin and its Ultimate G&T offer – it’s a shame it was lunchtime! So, back to the menu and my companion was swayed with the tempting sound of sausage, cheddar and caramelized onion panini served on fresh bread from Liddells bakery with side salad, homemade coleslaw and a handful of crisps for £6.50. The use of local suppliers across both the food and drink offering as well as the ethos to create everything from scratch with its homemade contribution was a big tick in the box for me and a delight to see on the menu. I digress, but it is a point I wanted to stress and so back to my own food choice. Well, it had to be the day’s special which was a Broccoli and Stilton quiche with new potatoes and salad for just £7.95. Served on one of the
paddles I had hoped for, this dish certainly didn’t disappoint. The texture was perfect and the taste of Stilton was evident from the first mouthful without overpowering the Broccoli – perfect! It would be remiss of me not to try the sausage panini too which again was a delight and highly recommended. With a slogan of Eat . Drink . Relax, we did just that. With a slightly fuller tummy than we would have liked (so we could otherwise have treated ourselves to the delightful looking homemade cakes staring at us from underneath nine, yes, nine glass domes!) we had to admit defeat under the strict proviso that we will be back! Bistro 7 is certainly a venue gaining a strong reputation from the loyal fan base of old but it is now attracting new customers too, enticed by the quality of food and the option of local and international alcoholic beverages now on offer since awarded a license earlier this year. Now open on Friday and Saturday nights, a new clientele is attracted to the venue which prompted ideas such as Friday Fizz and other special events which are proving extremely popular. Under new ownership, this little venue is thriving and is actually the fourth addition to the business portfolio of new owners, David and Andrea Pinder. David and Andrea have brought their experience and a touch of ‘individuality’ to the mix and it is the nice touches that also make a difference – 65p for example can get you a dinky ice cream served alongside your coffee! The support to local businesses including its range of ice creams on offer from Luxury English Lakes and offers including its afternoon tea for two for just £20 are helping to attract new custom and once visited, have been returning which is testament that they have found the right mix, right in the heart of Barrowford.

The Potting Shed The Winter Garden As we wave the summer goodbye and move closer towards the end of the year, the cold weather will soon be upon us and so it’s important to protect the flowerbeds we’ve worked so hard to keep in bloom throughout the spring and summer months! The cold weather is a stressful time for plants and so there are a few things that you can do throughout the winter which will make for easier work when you’re back in the garden in spring and ensure a blossoming garden returns when temperatures pick up! Everyone longs for an Indian summer but eventually temperatures will begin to drop and as the warm sunny days make way for the cold longer nights it’s time to start preparing your garden for what’s to come. The best time to start ‘winterising’ is when the temperature consistently starts to drop towards 5°C, which is normally from the middle to end of October.
Falling leaves start to pick up momentum in November and wind and rain make more of an appearance so your garden can start to look a bit miserable. Pick and rake up any leaves that find their way onto your flowerbeds and lawn and brush those up that fall on your patio as once the rain comes, not only do they look uninviting, they can also become a slip hazard! If you have a quiet space in your garden you can save these leaves in a big pile which will eventually turn to compost, perfect for potted plants and flower beds in the New Year.
Firstly make sure that all weeds are removed from flowerbeds along with any annual flowers that have already flowered and died off. Remove dead flower heads from perennial plants as this prevents the plant from investing too much energy, which it needs for winter, in trying to re-grow the flower. It is also a good idea to cut perennials back to about 5cm above the soil which helps improve the appearance and encourages flowering again next year. The end of October is also the ideal time to plant daffodil and tulip bulbs ready for a beautiful and colourful spring display! 36 | YourVillageLife
Most perennials are strong when it comes to cold and even frost, but some can feel the pressure so it is best to protect them in order to ensure their reappearance next year. Place approximately 2 inches of dry mulch; bark, compost or newspaper works well, onto the soil at the base of the plant which will store moisture and protect the roots as the cold weather firmly takes hold.
December Christmas is getting closer and the weather in December can be very bitter and luckily there isn’t actually much that needs to be done in the flowerbeds or garden. Keep an eye on plants which should be watered sparingly to avoid water-logging and rotting and try and help the birds that are finding it more and more difficult to find food and water. Put out seeds and make sure birdbaths stay ice-free; a good way is to use a small, floating ball so when it freezes take the ball out to leave a hole. Then it’s time to relax in the warmth of your home, have a festive G&T and plan your garden for 2016 and make the New Year a garden to remember!
