The answer is simple - they think and tinker, design and discard, draw sketches and build models and they do all that with a good dose of creativity and a keen sense of what children need. But they’re not alone; instead they’re in constant contact with construction and quality specialists which materials are safe for children? How big do the balls have to be? Every year, our inventors develop around 500 new games and toys for children. With HABA, everything is “Made in Germany” from the idea right through to the prototype!

Materials and suppliers We follow a basic principle at HABA - each toy is only as safe as its materials! So wood, paints and fabrics are continually checked and improved. Just like our finished toys, our raw materials correspond to all safety standards and laws: • All paints are water-based and solvent-free. For decades, we have been working together with German supply partners to only use first-class stains, varnishes and print colors. • Materials for toys that we don’t produce in Bad Rodach are checked and monitored in Germany in their unprocessed form (e.g. paints in liquid form).
In harmony with natur We use woods from sustainable forestry in German forests. Children are the best thing we have and nature is the most valuable gift we can give them: with natural toys and games made from home-grown wood. That is why we use wood from sustainable forestry in German forests and why HABA has carried the PEFC seal, which stands for sustainable and responsible forestry, since 2010. This will preserve our forests for future generations - as a livelihood, a place of work and somewhere to relax and have fun.

Production Our Moby clutching toy first glimpses the light of day in Bad Rodach, as shown in the image on the right. Just this toy? No, building blocks and game pieces too - nearly all the wooden pieces that HABA offers; just like we have for the past 70 years. Recently we expanded production to a wide range of countries. Why? In order to provide a vast array of products, including textiles, and more importantly to be able to offer you the highest-quality at an acceptable price. Last but not least, this also allows us to secure jobs in sales, advertising and distribution. Naturally, our global manufacturers are carefully selected. We regularly visit production sites and check quality. HABA products that are made from fabric or plastic are produced by manufacturers that we inspect according to strict criteria, for example according to social standards (working hours, conditions and child labour). These manufacturers have been certified by various bodies, including ICTI*. You can rely on HABA even when it doesn’t say “Made in Germany” on the packaging.

Splashing for safety - the submersion test
Tests Before our flower pixies set off on their journey to you, they are put through their paces, just like all HABA toys. The tests exceed legal requirements - and they are particularly strict for toys!
On the one hand, we check our toys for chemical substances, e.g. for azo dyes, softeners or to see if they contain or leach heavy metals.
The TÜV Rheinland group, which includes the Landesgewerbeanstalt Bayern (LGA) in Nuremberg, continually tests both our materials and the finished toys. The independent testing institute with years of experience checks the following standards and laws, among others:
On the other hand, we check the mechanical safety of all toys by intentionally destroying them so that we can identify any manufacturing defects.

We carry out the following tests: - Submersion tests for testing the resistance of all indi vidual parts with subsequent tensile test

Toy manufacturers have to fulfil hundreds of standards and laws. Imagine if you had to meet these guidelines for your children in everyday life - the stick would be too long, the gravel to small... Things that are obvious in everyday life also stand true for toys. The “whole picture“ is required for safety laws do not replace cautious and attentive use.
