“I’ve done everything from graphic design to concept illustration but nothing comes close to creating my own visions. To me it’s like drawing without a soul. I use my abilities to make images but really I’m just translating someone else’s ideas.”
Mr. Bubble’s Birthday
Brian Despain was born in 1971 with an overactive imagination and a penchant for coloring in the lines. Currently he’s working as a conceptual designer, modeler and illustrator for Snowblind Studios, USA.
castlemagazine: What do you think, why is it so many illustrators like to draw robots? Brian: Though I can’t readily speak for others the desire to use robots in my images is twofold. First off robots are just cool, period. But second, when I create a painting one of my main goals is to instill in it an emotional tension. If I can create something that is moving, sad and funny all at once, so that a person, when viewing the image, is taken on a roller-coaster ride of feelings, then that image is going to be more potent in the viewers mind and thus a more successful piece of art. Naivety is one of the most underrated of human conditions. Innocence is seen as this safe and simple place, but in truth it’s a gateway to destruction and ruin. The experienced person will have learned how to avoid the dangers and pain and emotional devastation thrown at them on a daily basis but an innocent, unlearned person sets themselves up to fail simply but not knowing or understanding the potential outcome of any given situation. Since I can’t do horrible things to puppies or babies or some other profoundly innocent being without eliciting immediate derision or disgust in my viewers I chose instead to use robots, newly aware of themselves, but removed just enough from “human” to make their situations funny instead of horrifying and just human enough for us to connect with them as one who was at one time innocent but now experienced for having gone through what these poor metal men are about to. castlemagazine: When did you felt like a robot the last time?
castle
Piscis Ex Machina
Brian: There are times, in the wee hours of the morning, weeks into a project, where I feel as if I’m just going through the motions. It’s then, when the spark of creativity has left and all I’m doing is coloring in the lines, when I feel most like a robot.
castlemagazine: If you would build a roboter what would be his name? Brian: I’ve always been particular to the name “Gary” but I think, given my impish nature, I would call it something subversively funny like, “IPgr8”. castlemagazine: Tell us your favourite task a robot should do for you if you could be his master..? Brian: If I could get a robot bartender I’d be in heaven. castlemagazine: Do you think there is a thing a robot can definiteley never manage to do? Brian: Make art. castlemagazine If they would be allready available, would you buy some robot for yourselfor do you think it’s an frightening Idea? Brian: Frankly, all kidding aside, I see the “Terminator” scenario as a real possibility. If we are not careful to instill in our creations concepts like “love”, “honor” and “responsibility”, all those ideas and emotions that puts us above our animal brethren, it is a very real possibility that the machines we create could eventually be our undoing. castlemagazine: Do robots dream of electric sheeps?
castle
Blendboy 2K
Brian: No, but I bet Phil does.
castlemagazine: Do you think we build robots to understand ourselves? Is building humalike robots just a searching for our existence? Brian: I believe we build robots because we’re inherently lazy. They are the socially acceptable alternate to slaves. Alternately the whole building a robot to mimic the human body originates entirely from our overwhelming arrogance. When you come right down to brass tacks the human body, as a machine isn’t really that efficient in terms of completing a task. We’re not fast, we’re not strong, in fact we don’t have any traits that make us that great except for our exceedingly advanced brain. So if you really want to understand and explore the human condition you should concentrate on understanding and building an analytical mind rather than spending millions of dollars to machine that can walk up stairs on two legs.

castlemagazine: Do you think we build robots to understand ourselves? Is building humalike robots just a searching for our existence? nemo gould: i definitely think so in the case of “humanoid robots. there is no other reason for them to look like we do. robots are a kind of wish fulfillment. as people, we can barely keep up with the technology we have created. a robot is a literal union of man and technology.

Birmingham, England.
Matt Dixon was born in 1972 in These days, almost all of his artwork is undertaken digitally, something he enjoyed since he first started assembling images from ASCII characters on his old VIC-20. Thankfully, things have moved on a bit since 1980...
castlemagazine: What do you think, why is it so many illustrators like to draw robots? Matt: Maybe because they’re very emotional objects? The artist can make the robot look however they wish and construct them from whatever material they choose, but if they have a body, arms, legs and a head, the viewer can’t help but project some emotion or feeling onto them. Robots are very powerful in that way. castlemagazine: When did you felt like a robot the last time? Matt: When. Answering. Questions. SYNTAX ERROR IN LINE 2. castlemagazine: If you would build a roboter what would be his name? Matt: Rolf. castlemagazine: Tell us your favourite task a robot should do for you if you could be his master..? Matt: That’s easy. I’d get my robot to paint pictures! castlemagazine: Do you think there is a thing a robot can definiteley never manage to do? Matt: Paint pictures. castlemagazine: If they would be allready available, would you buy some robot for yourself or do you think it’s an frightening idea?
castle
Number Six
Matt: Buy one? That’s a frightening thought. I don’t want a robot as slave. I’d like to meet one in a bar and make friends. Machines make better friends than most people do.
castlemagazine: Do robots dream of electric sheeps? Matt: Of course. And electric dogs, cats and mice. But not birds. Robots don’t trust birds. castlemagazine: Do you think we build robots to understand ourselves? Is building humalike robots just a searching for our existence? Matt: When I draw robots, I always feel like they’re lost and lonely. Full of wires and wheels, but missing a heart. I think a lot of humans feel that way sometimes, so maybe we do see something of ourselves in robots and perhaps that makes it easier to understand how we feel. I don’t know. I think we should all be friends with the machines and see if that makes us kinder to each other. I’m going to hug my washing machine now...

EIGHT QUESTIONS FOR ANN SMITH / BUROBURROW
castlemagazine: What do you think, why is itmany artists like to work with robots? Ann Smith: They’re just so cool. They can be made to do anything. The closer they are to our reality, though, the creepier they are. All of this makes them a great subject matter for artists. castlemagazine: When did you felt like a robot the last time? Ann Smith: Working at my little part time job as a sales associate, we absolutely have to greet everyone that comes through the door. It can be so forced sounding: “Hi, How are you today?” Many times I don’t get a response, or even a glance. This is when I feel like a robot. castlemagazine: If you would build a roboter what would be his name? Ann Smith: Unicorn. castlemagazine: Tell us your favourite task a robot should do for you if you could be his master..? Ann Smith: I would like a full size robot horse that I could ride around the city instead of a car. castlemagazine: Do you think there is a thing a robot can definiteley never manage to do? Ann Smith: Uh...get drunk? I can’t imagine they’d be very good cooks either- you have to taste things to cook. As artists they’d only be able to replicate things. As comedians they could tell a joke but would never get it. They would think things like roller coasters are pointless. They would never understand why people love their pets... or other people. Really, they’d be bad at anything that requires inspiration... like drinking! castlemagazine: If they would be allready available, would you buy some robot for yourselfor do you think it’s an frightening idea? Ann Smith: Are you kidding? I would love to have a robot. I can see myself getting really attached, and never being able to trade it in for the new model... like my computer. castlemagazine:.Do robots dream of electric sheeps? Ann Smith: I’m not sure if they dream, but I put mine to bed every night. castlemagazine: Do you think we build robots to understand ourselves? Ann Smith: Is building humalike robots just a searching for our existence? I think it’s natural to try to make robots that look like us. It makes sense to try to copy something we know. I’m not sure that we’re really searching for anything when we do that. I think It’s kind of a game: seeing how far we can go.

Raffael Stüken The book »The form of norm« gives an inside on the different aspects of norm and tries to define the nature of norm by the use of design elements and illustrations on the one hand and descriptive texts on the other. Aspects of interest are the nature, the appearance, the genesis and the classification of norms, but also instruments, which are used by norms or which determine norms, as well as the negation – the abnorm. In order to be able to cover the complexity of the subject the subtopics were selected in a more exemplary and representative kind of way. So this book does not claim completeness but offers a taste on one´s tongue. The design is characterized by the exchanges between norm and abnorm. A precise grip and a clear typographic concept versus the anarchistic outbursts of the designer.
