ThePresident’sLetter
As we wrap up another year,
I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the joy and camaraderie that our water activities bring. Memories of warm summer days spent with friends and our dogs on the water are truly special. Seeing all the photos of water trial teams in action and celebrating their achievements reminds us of the bond we share with our seafaring breed. What better activity could there be for our water lovers?
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the water trials this summer. Our program continues to grow, and this year was no exception. We sanctioned eight trials across Alberta, Ontario, and British Columbia. With 193 entries, there were 55 qualifying scores and an impressive 45 new titles awarded. Well done to all!
If you and your dog achieved something new this year don’t forget to apply for the PWDCC achievement badges. These badges are free for PWDCC members, and the deadline to apply is February 15, 2025.
This issue of the Waterlog marks the end of an era as it is the final edition produced by Roslyn Eskind after 22 incredible years. On behalf of everyone, I want to again extend our heartfelt thanks to Roslyn for her dedication and contributions. In my previous message, I called for volunteers to help carry on her legacy and I’m pleased to announce that we have found two wonderful individuals to step into key roles. Brawna Levy will be managing the website, and Susan Vanderberg will serve as our new graphic designer. Thank you, Brawna and Susan, for stepping up!
While these roles are filled, we still need more help with the Waterlog, particularly with sourcing content, looking up show results, and assisting with editing. If you’re interested in contributing to our team, I’d love to hear from you.
As 2024 comes to a close, I hope you find time to relax and enjoy the festive season with family and friends. Thank you for your continued support, and don’t forget to renew your membership!
Wishing you a joyous holiday season and a wonderful start to 2025 Catherine, Catherine

Judges’ Remarks
Laurel Creek Conservation Area Waterloo Ontario
Friday August 23, 2024
Judge Catherine Gadd
It was a pleasure to judge the first of three days of the PWDCC Ontario water trials on 23 August. As usual the Ontario committee ran an excellent trial. This group of water enthusiasts are so knowledgeable, supportive and encouraging to all who attend their trials. Many thanks Carolynne Issa and Brawna Levy, Co-chairs, and to your hardworking committee. Special thanks to Joanne Skalos, trial secretary extraordinaire. Yours is not an easy job. Many thanks to the stewards who did an excellent job and to all volunteers, trials could not run successfully without your support. Hospitality was outstanding, delicious lunches at the site and dinners out. I love the host hotel only minutes away from the site. It is the most comfortable dog friendly hotel I have ever stayed at.
We had perfect summer weather on Friday, warm sunny with only a light breeze which made rowing and keeping the boats steady very easy. Nine new titles were earned from the Junior to Courier levels.
I very much enjoyed trialing my dog on the other two days under John Ellery. We were thrilled to welcome him back to Ontario this time as a judge. The teams were able to do their best under his calm and kind manner.
Congratulations to all the teams entered, it was an honour to judge you. I loved being back in Ontario enjoying my favourite summer activity with friends old and new and their wonderful dogs.
Thank you for inviting me.

Judge John Ellery
Saturday/Sunday August 24/25, 2024
I would like to thank the PWDCC Ontario Water Trial Host Committee for giving Amanda and I the opportunity to trial one day under judge Catherine Gadd and for asking me to be the judge for the two subsequent trials. It was a pleasure to compete with and judge for your club and its wonderful members.
We had the opportunity to trial at the Laurel Creek Conservation Area in 2022 as part of our participation in the PWDCC National Specialty. That experience was very special, so I was excited to receive the invitation to judge your 2024 water trial. With freshly minted water trial judges, I recognize that clubs are taking a bit of a chance with asking them to judge their trials. This was only my second judging assignment since being approved as a judge, so I really appreciate the opportunity.
Carolynne Issa and Brawna Levy did an excellent job as co-chairs for the trial. Their communication was clear, concise, and timely, which helped keep the trials moving along, the judges and competitors informed, and helped to ensure the trials were without incident. Joanne Skalos was the Trial Secretary, which is a very large and challenging role at any water trial. I really appreciate her work to support me and keep me on track with paperwork throughout the trials.
Through our process to become water trial judges, Lorie Crouch and I have become friends. Her role as Chief Steward, along with the support of her assistant Becca Levy, ensured that the site was ready for each trial and that we always had capable volunteers to keep the trial running well. No trial can operate without equipment, so a very special thank you to Pat and Roy Vokes for making sure the trial equipment was available and in excellent working condition. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the great job by Angie Frasson for ensuring that everyone was well nourished and for the drinks and snacks that kept me energized while judging.
On Saturday, I was given the honor of selecting the recipient of the Lorraine Wilson "Most Promising" Award. The “Most Promising” award is selected from Junior and Apprentice participants in the Saturday Trial whether a certificate or title is earned or not. For this year’s award, I selected Jamey Medeiros and Hazel. Their Junior run demonstrated a solid understanding of the exercises, showed teamwork only possible with a strong bond between handler and dog, and they clearly looked like they were having fun throughout their run. I expect that with continued training and experience this team will be able to achieve whatever goals they set.
I also had the pleasure of awarding the Sixth Annual Charles Robinson Performance Recognition Award in honor and memory of Judge and Water Trial Mentor Mr. Charles Robinson. I had the good fortune of knowing Chuck, learning from his extensive knowledge, and training with him through his membership in our local club. My closest mentors while working to become a judge also regularly referred to how Chuck would handle various judging scenarios. Prior to this trial I was not aware of the award in his name, so it was very special to learn that I would be selecting the recipient. My choice for this year was Pat Vokes and Mauzzi, who had spectacular runs all weekend and finished the weekend with an MWD3. My award selection was based on evaluating Saturdays runs for all teams, but I can say that Pat and Mauzzi consistently worked as an effective partnership with a mutually beneficial relationship. Their love for each other and for the sport was obvious. It is with great sadness that realize I will not have the opportunity to watch this team trial in the future. Pat will be greatly missed.
While recognizing specific teams with awards is special, I also want to acknowledge that there were many successes and moments of brilliance for the other teams in the trial. For those that qualified, I applaud your efforts, your dedication to your canine partner, and your journey through the various levels of water work. Teams that did not qualify should take away many things from the trials. First, know that you took advantage of an opportunity to have fun with your dog, which should be your number one priority at any trial. Another take away is that every failure is a chance to identify areas of focus for future training. What I hope for all teams is that they come away looking forward to the next training opportunity and the next trial. I wish everyone continued progress towards your water training goals.
I hope to see everyone again soon at a water trial or other event. Thank you again for the privilege to be one of the judges for your 2024 water trial.

Cathy Hammerschmidt Trial Secretary
The very successful inaugural PWDCC Western Branch Water Trial at Cultus Lake Provincial Park in Chilliwack, BC was held September 21-22, 2024.
First off a big thank you must be given to Michelle Hammerschmidt for her vision and determination to get a Water Trial in BC. It was a lot of negotiating with Sea to Sky Parks but she did it!
Thank you also to Sarah Kahn who came up from Seattle to judge. We had several teams who had never trialed or acted as Stewards before and she was so kind, helpful and welcoming to them all. And to the rest of us as is her usual way.
We were very surprised at how quickly the trial filled. We had budgeted for 35 entries and at the end of the day we had 66! For various reasons there were withdrawals after closing and we ended up with 53 runs over two days - all levels from Junior, with this being the first dog sport for some, all the way up to Master.
The mid-September weather cooperated and the water was clear and warm. The summer crowds had put away their boats and jet-skis so the water was very calm, almost like glass for many of the runs.
Congratulations to all the teams who qualified:
Due to the huge number of donations received we were able to have Judge’s Choice Awards for each level on both days. And the winners were:
Saturday
Junior Blair Sharp and Luke (4 lb Big Country Raw)
Apprentice Christine McKinnon and Huxx (4 lb BCR food)
Working Pat Belliveau and Blast (12 lb BCR food)
Courier Cindy Gamache and Raven (18 lb BCR food)
Master Michelle Hammerschmidt and Nokk (30 lb BCR food)
Sunday
Courier Sandy Nicholls and Tug (Scent Work package from Nose and Hearts Scentwork Supplies)
Working Cathy Hammerschmidt and Jaxx (leash/collar from Sunspot Paracord Creations )
Apprentice Chris Desjardins and Saber (leash/collar from Sunspot Paracord Creations)
Junior Sophie Cook and Mabel (leash/collar from Sunspot Paracord Creations)
Our overall Spirit Award of a 30 lb box of Big Country Raw went to Denyse Martin.
Also, because of all the donations, we were able to offer our version of a Canadian Ducky Derby, ‘I Want to be a Beaver’. Dogs’ names were put on sticks, tossed in the water, and dogs were drawn to retrieve the winners. The funny thing was that a real beaver was spotted around the corner from the trial site when the boats arrived for set up.
We also need to thank The Golden Nomads Photography for coming out to their first ever PWD Water Trial. They spent both days with two photographers to provide competitors with some amazing photos. They were so amazed at what our breed can do!
The goal for Michelle and myself when we started planning was to make this trial extra special so people would want to come back to BC. From feedback received we feel we succeeded and we will be hosting again next year. Pending approval, the BC trial dates are Sept. 13-14, 2025.

If Pat were wanting to leave everyone with one message it would a favourite quote she often shared,
“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always”
Pat Vokes
The PWDCC community lost a loved and respected member. Pat contributed so much to the PWDCC, taking very seriously her position on the board as Treasurer and consultant on budgeting and other financial matters. But Waterwork, with her calm and loving presence, was clearly her passion. Along with Roy, Pat’s work at the trials was always so reassuring. Pat was always available to help others, mentoring and cheering on them on. Her love of Kelby and Mauzzi was so apparent and inspiring. Her gifted gentle training resulted in outstanding results. Even at the last trial this August, Pat, although not well, showed her devotion. Gone much too soon, we all grieve your passing.
There are no words to capture the heartbreaking loss of this incredible woman. Mentor, coach and tireless supporter to so many. A soft, kind exterior with a fierce, loving heart. Pat shared her knowledge, celebrated your successes, consoled and then helped you learn from the lessons. Missed so so much.
Tan Crombie
Pat Vokes
JANUARY 26, 1960 – SEPTEMBER 28, 2024
It is with incredible sadness that we want to let everyone know that Pat passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 28, 2024. She was with her husband Roy and their wonderful dog Mauzzi.
Pat was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario to parents Peter and Gwen Bracalente. She was the second youngest of five and shortly after her birth the family moved to Barrie. Barrie was home for Pat and where she spent her childhood surrounded by family and extended family. Pat remained extremely close to all her siblings throughout her life and appreciated their wonderful support and love always.
Pat started her working career with Barrie Credit Union and soon after was offered a position at Bank of Nova Scotia. After several years she joined her sister Sandy in the computer industry. There she and Sandy worked at helping two fast growing companies grow into valuable entities. At the second entity Pat held the role of Comptroller but with the move of the company to Nova Scotia, Pat stuck to her Ontario roots and decided to strike out on her own in the accounting and bookkeeping field. It is here that she enjoyed building a business with clients and work that she enjoyed doing from home.
It was during her banking days in Barrie that she met Roy, who she referred to as the love of her life. Much later in August 2000 Pat and Roy moved to Nobleton and together they set up a home full of love and commitment. Pat accepted Roy’s marriage proposal while at the top of Panorama Mountain in BC and then in 2009 they travelled to Lake Powell, Arizona and were married in Navajo Canyon, AZ.
In 2006 a new world opened up for Pat with the arrival of a Portuguese Water Dog named Kelby. This was an opportunity for Pat to express her caring nature and acute intuitiveness to create and develop a new career hobby in dog training. Pat fully applied herself as she always does and worked with Kelby first, and then later with Mauzzi, to achieve many of the highest levels of dog training and competition in Canada. Her favourite activity by far was Waterwork working through the exercises and levels that honour the historical work of the breed. Waterwork was also an activity that brought the “whole team” together. Roy and Pat trained and worked together to compete in Canada and the US with their unique style and keen competitiveness. Both Kelby and Mauzzi rose to the top levels of competition.
Although the ribbons and medals gave Pat a lot of pride, it was actually the time spent to bring the incredible abilities out in her dogs that provided her the most satisfaction. She was keen to share her knowledge and style with anybody who would listen, and she will be remembered for all the time and effort she so generously shared with others. Every bit of sharing brought her good feelings and at her best.
Pat is survived by her loving husband and soulmate Roy (“Buck”) and Mauzzi, immediate family Mother Gwen (Chuck), brother Steven, sister Sandra, and sister Maria (Michel). Pat was predeceased by brother Jamie (2015). Nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews were all dearly loved by Pat.
A celebration of Pat’s life will take place at a later date. Condolences for the family may be offered at www.EganFuneralHome.com
Donations can be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation or to a charity of choice.
Eight years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Pat when Mauzzi was just a pup. Pat was committed to starting Mauzzi on the right path with canine fitness and routine canine physio, knowing he would lead an active lifestyle. Pat became one of my longest-standing and most cherished clients, and I looked forward to each visit with genuine excitement.
Team Mauzzi became legendary with their achievements in the water. Pat possessed remarkable talent but remained humble, never one to boast—that simply wasn’t her style. Not only did Pat exhibit exceptional training skills with Mauzzi (in dog sports and canine fitness), she also had an amazing ability to teach and train others. She was always positive and supportive and saw the good in every dog.
I consider myself lucky to have known Pat. She possessed a gentle and kind soul, both The world has indeed lost an extraordinary person.I am forever grateful for having known Pat. Until we meet again.
