ThePresident’sLetter
Dear PWDCC Members,,
It has been a busy few weeks as the PWDCC board settles into our new positions and navigates the intricacies of leading a National club. I would like to start by thanking the departing board members Mindy Selby, Roslyn Eskind, Shelly Johnston and Karen Matthews for all their hard work while serving on the board. Special thanks to Mindy and Roslyn for their ongoing support and guidance during this transitional phase.
Congratulations are in order for our new Board Members. With the addition of five new to three previous Members, we have a diverse range of strengths and experiences, representing provinces from coast to coast.
Spring has arrived! But as I write, snow is gently falling and covering all signs of new beginnings. Despite the snow, my thoughts are turning to the promise of warmer days and all the fun outdoor activities and competitions that we and our dogs so enjoy.
There are many upcoming events including a CKC Scent Detection Trial, on land and in water training camps, and a PWDCC Conformation Booster. Information is available on the Events page of the PWDCC website. Additionally, preparations for the 2024 National Specialty in Okotoks, Alberta, this August are well underway and details will soon be added to the website.
This year, the Water Trial Committee have approved a record number of seven water trials to be held in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. There are significant changes to the Water Trial Manual for 2024. We encourage all Water Trial participants to review the updated Manual available on the PWDCC website, along with a summary of key changes.
In addition to events, the PWDCC also runs a rescue program. In March, in British Columbia, a seven-year old PWD was relinquished to PWDCC rescue. He was assessed, vet checked and groomed and following two weeks of excellent foster care, went to his new forever family. We continue to seek an Ontario Rescue Co-Ordinator, and encourage interested individuals to visit the Rescue page on our website for further details.
The vitality of our club depends on the dedication of volunteers, and I extend my deepest appreciation to all who generously contribute their time and energy.
To our valued members, both longstanding and new, I emphasize that this club is yours, and we welcome your input and ideas to help propel us forward for the betterment of our cherished breed

Our first PWD joined our family in 1990. As I drove that 8-week old puppy home I could never have imagined the adventures we would share for the next 14 years. His boundless energy was the reason I became involved in water work. He introduced me to the world of dog sport that my dogs and I have enjoyed, including agility, rally and obedience but water work will always be my passion.
I am a retired registered nurse and currently live in NB with my husband Mike, a PWD and a miniature poodle. I enjoy spending time with my 6-year old grandson who shares my love of nature, animals and the ocean. As well as my dog activities I am a volunteer with Elder Dog Canada a national charity that assists and supports older adults in the care and wellbeing of their canine companions.
A member of the PWDCC since its inception I have held several positions on the board. My proudest achievement, along with a small group of water enthusiasts, is having PWDCA sanctioned water trials approved in Canada. In 2004 our first trial was held in Waterloo Ontario. Trials are now also held in Alberta and British Columbia. In 2008 I became an approved PWDCA water trial judge which added a new and interesting dimension to my hobby.
I look forward to serving once again on the Board of Directors as President, with a goal to assist the next generation of PWD enthusiasts in moving the Club forward to grow our membership, run events and trials including the 2024 National Specialty .

Jennifer Byers, Montreal, Quebec
I am a retired nurse and am passionate about my dogs. As a child I loved dogs and when I finally acquired my first dog, a Pointer, my allergies forced me to place him, this was a very painful experience. In the early 90s, I saw a picture of a Portuguese Water Dog on the cover of the Dogs’ Annual and discovered a non-shedding hypo-allergic dog. Further investigation led me to Beverly Jorgensen of Sun Joy Kennel in Connecticut where I felt in love with Gracie (Sun Joy’s Goodness Gracious), my first Portuguese Water Dog. I did not realize this would be the beginning of an exciting adventure. Gracie’s first litter in the spring of 1996 produced seven puppies, and as one of my favourite movies was an Italian classic called “Seven Beauties” , the combination of both inspired the use of Sevenbeauty as my kennel name. In this first litter was George, (BIS Am Can CH Sevenbeauty George) my first show dog. At that time I met a great handler, now a CKC Judge, and together with George, we formed an exciting team winning the first all breed Best In Show for a Canadian bred Portuguese Water Dog.
Tan Crombie, Georgetown, Ontario
I brought home my first PWD in 2004 and following advice from an insightful trainer, decided to pursue therapy dog certification with Ottawa Therapy Dogs. This was my first introduction to a working partnership with my canine companion and I was hooked. Currently owned by two PWDs, Grace (BigBay High Society) and Rosie (Baywood’s Wild Rose), we’ve travelled in Canada and the US taking part in agility, rally, scent detection, sprinter, tricks and water work. A member of the PWDCA, CKC, AAC, SDDA and GLPWDC, it’s the PWDCC that has been an incredible resource with opportunities to learn more about our working dogs, training tips in camps and fun days and a supportive, welcoming community. Between competitions, I work in governance consulting and bring project management, planning, analysis and communication skills. As a member of the PWDCC Board, I look forward to the work ahead and supporting members new and returning along their PWD journey.
Diane Dirsus, Keswick, Ontario
I have been the club’s Treasurer since January 2021. I am a retired accountant and worked in Finance for 25 years at a management level.
I currently have 2 Portuguese Water Dogs. I love my dogs and spend much of my time training my dogs in Agility, Scent Detection and Rally Obedience. We have also trialed and titled in each of these sports. I look forward to continuing to serve the club as Treasurer.

Lorie Crouch, St. Catharines, Ontario
We met our first PWD in 1995 on a soccer pitch and decided this was the perfect pet for our growing family. After Cola came Oscar who took me on an extraordinary journey in obedience, rally, scent, agility and water. I serve on the Ontario Water Trial Committee as Chief Steward and in 2022 became a Water Trial Judge with the PWDCA. Today I live with Journey and Trip.
Before dogs I was an actor, served on several boards and helped my husband Monte establish a successful import business. I enjoy life with our four grandchildren, yoga, hiking, swimming and training my dogs.
I look forward to serving on the BOD and giving back to the organization that has provided education, opportunities and friendships that I otherwise would not have experienced.
Denyse Martin, Sherwood Park, Alberta
I have been owned by a dog since I was 6 years old! There has been a Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie, Labrador Retriever, Irish Water Spaniels and now Portuguese Water Dogs. I have competed in agility, obedience, rally, water work, dock diving and NASDA scent trials. I believe in the purpose of the PWDCC and welcome the opportunity to be part of its future.
Michelle Hammerschmidt, Chilliwack, British Columbia
I have been involved in the dog industry for 17 years now working as a professional groomer. I fell into water dogs in 2016 and have been putting time into expanding my knowledge in all fields from training, trialing, and showing. In 2008 I opened up my company Chauvet, we incorporated in 2020 becoming an all round pet service offering grooming and sport training. I am active with our local community of PWDS trying to expand our sport dog interest in BC.
Roy Vokes, Nobleton Ontario
I am a semi-retired Financial Planner and more recent dog owner, just in the past dozen or so years. My first pet experience was with our Portie named Kelby. Through having Kelby as part of our family we stumbled across Water Work at a Fun Day held hosted by the PWDCC. Over the years Pat did several other dog sport activities with Kelby and now with Mauzzi, however, my interest has always been with Water. I am a boat nut from birth and therefore thoroughly enjoy being part of the Ontario Water Program and active on the Water Trial Committee. I take pride and pleasure in putting together the equipment for the Ontario Water Program. Realizing that the PWDCC is more than just Water, I look forward to learning and doing more while working with the Board in the future months and years.

The PWDCC Achievement Program
The PWDCC is excited to offer an award program for competitive PWDCC member owners.
The purpose of this program is to highlight the versatility of our breed and reward the PWDCC members who work so diligently to put titles on their dogs. The award will come in the form of a PWDCC logo badge with your dog’s performance event embroidered on it. These badges are suitable to sew on a piece of clothing, your training bag or form a collage to frame and hang on a wall. As well as being a symbol of your team’s partnership and accomplishments, these badges may just inspire other PWD owners to join the PWDCC and/or enter the wonderful world of dog sports.
Badges will be awarded on an annual basis for the first title a dog achieves in all performance events achieved from a Titling Organization/Registry. An annual spring Email blast will advise you when to submit you application
Since Water Work was the original purpose of our wonderful breed, a badge will be offered for every level of achievement in this sport: Junior Water Dog; Apprentice Water Dog; Working Water Dog; Working Water Dog Excellent; Courier Water Dog; Courier Water Dog Excellent; (Versatility just awarded prior to 2017) and Masters (effective 2017).
For more information visit our Water Work page to download the manual.
Commencing January 1, 2015 these badges are available to owners for each dog earning titles. Members must apply for their badges using the online application form (pwdcc.org). The fully completed application and the required documentation can be scanned/pictures taken and sent via email or mail to the Program Coordinator following an annual spring eblast request.
FAQs
How do I know when to submit my application
An annual spring eblast will be sent to all members as a reminder to submit their application.
How many title badges can my dog get?
Your dog will receive one badge for each area of competition, with the exception of Water Work where a badge is earned for each level of competition. For more information visit our Water Work page to download the manual.
If you are a PWDCC member each of your dogs is entitled to earn badges. So if you have 3 dogs that title in Obedience you will receive 3 PWDCC Obedience badges.
My one dog has 3 Obedience CD’s from 3 different registries, can I get 3 badges for Obedience?
No, you will receive one Obedience badge.
My one dog was successful in attaining their Junior Water Dog and Apprentice Water Dog levels of Water Work, do I only get one badge?
No, in Water Work you receive a badge for each level at which your team is successful.
What if I receive a title from another titling registry/ organization, am I eligible to earn a badge?
Yes, Complete the application form and send along with the appropriate documentation to the program coordinator by mail or email, however, if you already have a badge for that specific dog sport you will not receive another badge for the same dog sport even if it is from a different titling registry/organization.
I did not get my title certificate in time for the application cut off, what do I do?
No problem, just complete the application process for the next submission date.
What about Service dogs?
These are for dogs who work in either Therapy, Search and Rescue or as an Assistance dog. There are specific eligibility requirements for each. Find out more about Service Dog eligibility below. It is your responsibility to fill out the required paper work and send it to the program coordinator.
I’m from the USA, can I include American Titles?
Yes. If you are a PWDCC member complete the application form and send with the appropriate documentation to the program coordinator by email or mail.
MARCH 2024 www.pwdcc.org PWDCC Waterlog 6
I am a co-owner and I showed my dog but never received a badge. Why?
If you co-own a dog and are a PWDCC member but are not listed first on the Registration papers you will not receive the badge even if you were the person who put the title on the dog (except for water titles). The badges are sent to the first PWDCC member named on the dog’s registration papers. You will need to contact the co-owner to get your badge or you can purchase a badge. If you wish to have the names reversed, both owner and co-owner need to contact the program coordinator via email so that it can be switched in the program database.
How do I purchase a badge?
Sometimes owners lose a badge and sometimes there is a co-owner on a dog who also wants a badge. You are allowed to purchase replacement badges by completing the application form and sending via email or mail along with the appropriate documents to the program coordinator. Please include payment of $15.00 per badge by VISA/Paypal or cheque payable to PWDCC.
I have a dog who earned a title prior to the commencement of the program. Can they get a badge?
Dogs who earned performance titles before the program began January 1, 2015 (alive or deceased) are eligible to purchase a badge. For the purpose of this program and titles prior to 2015 we are defining performance titles as everything except conformation. These are titles that always required the partnership of a working team to achieve the title whereas in Conformation the dog is not always owner/handled. Complete the application process and send via email or mail along with the appropriate documents to the program coordinator. Please include payment of $15.00 per badge by VISA/Paypal or cheque payable to PWDCC.
My dog earned his title before I was a PWDCC member, can he get a badge?
Yes. Complete the application process and send via email or mail along with the appropriate documents to the program coordinator. Please include payment of $15.00 per badge by VISA/Paypal or cheque payable to PWDCC.
I know I am supposed to get a badge but never received it. What should I do?
If you meet all of the criteria and are sure you are due a badge then contact the program coordinator so that it can be straightened out. Sometimes the badge goes to the wrong owner, sometimes there is a change of address that doesn’t get into the database in time and sometimes a name is changed or not listed in the membership roster as primary PWDCC member.
I just earned my first title. How long will I have to wait to get a badge.
You will be reminded by an annual spring email blast to submit your application along with the appropriate documentation to the program coordinator.
What titling registries/organization are recognized in this program?
Accepted areas of competition include nationally-recognized registries/organizations that issue titles, as long as there is documentation of the title earned. Remember that only titles, not certificates or awards (other than Water Work), count towards the program. For some of the newer or more unusual areas of competition, the applicant may need to provide information to the program coordinator on the titling registry /organization, venue, and titles so that area of competition and titling levels may be determined.
Service Dog Award
The PWDCC Awards Committee offers a Service Dog award as part of the PWDCC Achievement program. This award recognizes dogs working as valued members of the community. It will be awarded to dogs that perform Therapy work, Assistance work and trained Search and Rescue (SAR) dogs.
Dogs earning certificates, currently working or becoming eligible after the date the program starts will receive a complimentary badge when documentation is submitted to the Awards Committee. Owners of dogs who worked in a Service capacity and are now retired or deceased may purchase badges for $15.00.

For those unfamiliar with Scent Detection Trials from the CKC website:
Scent Detection
A fun event open to all dogs to enjoy the challenge of locating a scent and communicating with their handler that the scent has been located. The trial is done in a variety of environments allowing a dog to use their strongest natural sense.
How it Works
There are five classes, starting with the entry-level “instinct” class, and in ascending order the novice, open, excellent, and master classes. Each class tests the dog’s ability at a new, more challenging level, encouraging greater perseverance and focus on fine-tuning of olfactory senses. The scent source may be within a container - the only option for the instinct levelinterior of a building, or exterior - the great outdoors!
Dogs will be divided into height divisions within the classes based on the height indicated on the entry form. Titles are awarded upon the dog acquiring the required number of qualifying scores within the class entered.
How to Get Started
You can start by watching a demo test in our Scent Detection Videos, but the best way to learn about dog sports is to try it for yourself! Join a Scent Detection Sanction Match - a friendly competition for any one to come and learn how to take part. Try it out at at any of the locations below. Signing up for a Sanction Match is easy - in most cases all you have to do is show up on event day! Contact the host club for full registration and event details.
To find an upcoming test near you, visit CanuckDogs.com.
Where do I find the Scent Detection Rules & Regulations?
The Scent Detection Rulebook is now available through the CKC order desk and online under Forms>Shows & Trials > Event Rules & Regulations > Scent Detection Rules & Regulations.
Where can I get the Scents required to hold the event?
For your convenience, The Canadian Kennel Club Basic Kits (For Instinct, Novice, Open and Excellent Classes) and the Master Kits (For Master Class) are available for purchase from Leerburg. Or, the oil scents can be sourced locally.

Catherine sought guidance on the upcoming AGM process and reports. Mindy emphasized that only active committees should submit reports. It was decided the Zoom invite will be sent to membership 2 weeks prior to the meeting with a reminder 3 days prior. Mindy will read her President report at the meeting.
Committees
Volunteer positions are currently being updated by Roslyn Eskind. Michelle volunteered to be board liaison for the conformation committee and also will join rescue as the western representative.
Lorie volunteered for board liaison for Membership. There was some confusion about people on certain committees who had not volunteered. Catherine will investigate this further.
2024 National Specialty
Denyse Martin agreed to be board liaison for the committee with members
Mindy Selby and Roslyn Eskind. It is hoped that a Scent Trial will be added to other planned events if a facility can be found.
Merchandise
Karen reported that there is approx. $2,500 worth of merchandise in sizes that are not selling. Karen suggested selling these items at a reduced price. For future ordering it was decided by the team that the variety of items would be greatly reduced to avoid excess stock. Roy offered support in developing new ideas and getting advice from another supplier. Karen has been invited to join the February meeting to discuss plans for merchandise.
Water Trial Committee
The PWDCA WTC have made significant changes to the manual for 2024.Once they have been approved by the PWDCA board they will be distributed to PWDCC and will necessitate substantive editing. In the past Roslyn has made the changes and Pat Vokes proofread. Lorie will check with them both to see if they would be agreeable to continue with this.
Membership
Catherine asked the board to come up with some ideas to increase numbers to discuss at a brainstorming session during the February meeting.

PWDCC Treasurer's Report, February 29, 2024
January 30, 2024 AGM Draft – for review only
Tan confirmed the reference to the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) will be removed from the draft minutes under the Report of the Treasurer. The PWDCC is not incorporated.
The minutes of the January 30, 2024 AGM will be approved at the next AGM.
Report of the Secretary
Directors were asked for input to the Board’s annual work plan. This document will be added to over the coming months.
The date of the next AGM was discussed. Ideally, this occurs at the national speciality but it was noted how difficult it is to schedule an AGM amongst events and venues of the speciality. To coincide with year-end financials, a date of Tuesday, October 29, 2024 was proposed and approved. In accordance with the bylaws, meeting notification will be shared with members at the end of August 2024.
Tan will be collecting information from all directors in order to confirm club changes with the CKC, collect signed confidentiality forms and communication preferences.
Committee Reports
Rescue no report
Complaints no report
Breeder no report
Water Trial Catherine confirmed the PWDCC Water Trial Manual is being updated. It is currently in the proofreading stage and once ready, will be sent to all members. Members of the PWDCC Water Trial Committee will be attending a PWDCA informational Zoom meeting on changes to the water trial manual on March 3.
New Business
The Board brainstormed challenges and opportunities for member retention. Areas for further discussion include demonstrating the benefits and reasons for a national club, encouraging puppy members to retain their membership and looking at options for a dual membership for western members. The breeder listing requirements for the PWDCC website will also be reviewed as the one-year trial period has ended.
Catherine will share the last members’ survey for information. There may be topics for sharing information either through the Waterlog or Zoom information sessions.
An email blast will be sent to members whose membership expired Dec 31st and are currently within the three month “grace” period for renewals.
Report of the Treasurer
The Board discussed an investment policy as raised at the January AGM. Diane described some of the realities of spending for the PWDCC and the need to have cash available at short notice, for example, for a rescue situation. Current short term investment rates are very similar to those for high interest savings accounts which are safe and highly liquid.
A motion was made to adopt an investment policy of retaining cash in a high interest savings account. It was moved by Roy and seconded by Lorie. The motion was approved.
Diane walked directors through the monthly financial report which is published in the Waterlog and responded to questions. Diane confirmed that signing authorities have been updated to reflect the new Board President.
Next Meeting
Future meeting dates in March, April and May were discussed. The April date will need to be rescheduled. Tan will canvass Board members.
The Board will meet next on March 12, 2024 at 7:30 pm EDT.
Adjournment
A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Denyse and second by Diane. The meeting was adjourned at 8:41 pm.

The PWDCC Breeder Program
The PWDCC has as a core objective “to encourage and promote the breeding of purebred Portuguese Water Dogs”
The PWDCC has over the years evolved a Breeder Program:
• To promote ethical breeding practices;
• To support our member breeders;
• To help the public source ethical breeders;
The Breeder Program consists of
• a Breeder List
• Available Puppies List
• Puppy Membership for Breeder Puppies
Originally the program was a simple website listing of a breeder with a link to the breeder’s webpage. The charge for this was $150.00 a year which funded our Rescue Program. Note, all PWDCC member breeders are obligated to take back their dogs should re-homing be needed, or pay the club $500.00 if the breeders can’t, for whatever reason, personally take responsibilty for re-homing the dog and needs the club to take the dog into Rescue.
However, it became apparent that breeders using this listing were not always in compliance with our Code of Ethics, not always testing breeding dogs, breeding underage dogs, sharing leads from the web listing with other non members.
To mitigate these issues and assure accountablity the current program was developed.
The Breeder Committee proposed a one year trial September 1, 2022 for a Breeder Program and the Board approved the Program under the following criteria:
• Re-instating a breeder list with the following conditions:
• No charge for the Breeder webpage listing
• PWDCC membership for at least one year (as per litter listing)
All litters must be posted on the Available Puppies webpage (where are health testing is posted for the sirer and dam) ($20.00 per litter). There is no limit to the number of litters posted per year.
All puppies sold with New Puppy Membership ($1.00 per puppy, note breeders have the option of having the puppy owner pay for this)
All puppies must registered with the CKC by the breeder
When a bitch is owned by two or more breeders, all breeders have to be members of the PWDCC in good standing. The exception to this rule is if the co-breeder is a resident of the United States or other international location.
Any stud dog owned or co-owned by a participant on the breeder list must only breed with breeders where the bitch is fully health tested
Non-compliance
Compliance is verified by checking the CKC stud dog directory (released typically in August the following year) and non-compliance will result in immediate removal from the PWDCC Breeder List and Available Puppy List with no refunds.
MARCH 2024 www.pwdcc.org PWDCC Waterlog 20
Non compliance is:
• Not reporting a litter.
• Not individually registering puppies in a litter that is registered.
• Not registering a litter
• Opps litters, that is, litters unintentionally bred, where the sire and dam are not fully health tested, will result in the following:
• First oops litter, must be reported
• 2nd oops litter, removed from the list for minimum of 6 months or the remainder of the year.
• 3rd opps litter, no longer eligible.
The PWDCA has migrated their health database to the group who run http://www.bernergarde.org/DB/Default
This database, https://pwdcahld.org, is public but the PWDCA will still have two levels of access, public where you can look up the dog’s pedigree and the password protected area where all information will be accessible.
Breeders are encouraged to use this database which has much improved functionality and incudes a COI and pedigree function.
A breeder who wants to participate applys with the Breeder list form and then, when they have a litter, send in the Available Litter form, both are available on the membership pages of the club website https://pwdcc.org/club-info/membership-application/
We’re also mindful of accountability. The Breeder List is not an endoresement of any Breeder. This list is provided as a service to the public and our Breeder Members. It’s important for prospective puppy owners to research any breeder they contact, our Buyer Beware and New Puppy pages help in accessing a reputable breeder.
This list is not an endorsement of any individual breeder, but each breeder listed has agreed to follow to requirements of the program.
In addition the club has asked for input from member breeders and is open to suggestions to improve the program. Contact Roslyn Eskind with any suggstions, roslyn@pwdcc.org, subject: Breeder program.
