On the cover: BISS MBIS GCH Am GCHB Seabury’s Final Voyage, AOMs. Pedro capped his show career by going Best in Specialty under esteemed breeder Judge Danik Dancause. Beautifully handled by Joanne Thibault. Pedro, who has two AOMs from PWDCA Nationals, two AKC National AOMs, Select Dog at Westminster, Select Dog at PWDCC Regional Specialty will now retire to being the best pet of the Wolff family.

I'm Caleb, Fado's Estrelaleal Rei if you please. I’m 5 months old now and I live with my two "aunties" Saydie and Izzie, Mom who seems to make the rules and Dad who goes along with Mom's rules too. Saydie’s my BFF and Izzie mostly sits on the sofa looking at us like we're insane. I'm already a welltravelled pup, born in Ontario, living in Calgary and Mom says we're off on an adventure, a car trip first to Lake of the Woods in Manitoba to meet more family and then to Ontario, and off to the PWDCA National Specialty where I'll make my debut in the conformation ring as a brand new 6 month puppy. Wish me luck! Caleb lives with Mindy Selby, Monte Ravlich, Izzy and Saydie, retired CKC champions in Calgary

ThePresident’sLetter

Much has happened at the national level since the last edition of Waterlog. During the month of May we hosted our National Specialty in Kitchener. In addition to Conformation, some of our members took part in Agility and Rally Obedience, and the Superdog competition. The positive feedback provided by participants from both Canada and the USA regarding their experience and the fun they had was unanimous! The event was a success in every respect.

I would like to congratulate the winners, thank all the participants and recognize all those who made this specialty possible including the organizing committee and our wonderful Conformation judges Danik Dancause and Kathy Maguire for their excellent work. An important and invaluable piece of the Specialty was judges education where CKC's conformation judges were able to receive education about judging our breed. A big thank you also to the Agility judge Billie McLean and the Rally judge Marie Sawford. Moreover, the summer is in full swing and it's wonderful to see lots of Portuguese Water Dogs working in the water! Ontario and Alberta have successfully hosted this summer's camps and many practices where camaraderie, support and fun have prevailed. Congratulations to all those who have made these activities possible and to the many participants. The culmination of this summer of water work will be held in two competitions on August 10, 11 and 12 in Alberta and Ontario. For those who have never had the opportunity to see our wonderful breed do the job they were bred for this is a great event to watch. Do not hesitate to go watch and support the teams trialing! Finally, and critical for our club, in this edition of the Waterlog we request the involvement of members in various committees to advance critical projects to improve services to members and breeders. Do not hesitate to get involved – the success of your club, in part, depends on your participation!

PWDCC National Specialty Judge’s Comments As a dog judge, to have the honour to be invited to judge at the National Specialty is a moment to cherish – probably due to my extensive experience with Portuguese Water Dogs as a handler, groomer, and guest speaker, and, that early in my judging career I’d been fortunate to have several prestigious assignments for PWD’s. I was the Sweepstakes judge at the US National Specialty in 2011, and now I was to have the privilege to step into the ring to crown the winner of it all for the Canadian National Specialty! I am truly grateful for this invitation and opportunity. As a judge the job is to be ready for the assignment and give an opinion based on the breed standard while being as pleasant and efficient as possible. I was excited to see the dogs. The process You are probably wondering what I thought of your dogs. Before getting into the details, let me first, thank the Portuguese Water Dog Club of Canada for this wonderful assignment. Thank-you to all the breeders, handlers, exhibitors, as well as the participating teammates that are often forgotten in this equation. Here, I am referring to the non-showing partners that support, drive around, walk the dogs, and many other things. To all of you thank you for your participation in the breed celebration! I must say that overall the dogs were all very nice. There was not one dog in that line-up that was disappointing or not a good representative of the breed. For a judge, that is pure joy. Why? Because I could simply focus on the task of looking at the dogs and compariing them against their breed standard. I start every evaluation the same way with attention to the overall symmetry and balance. Then I move to the head piece where I look for a strong muzzle - to have a full hand when examining the skull to match the breed description that says “Well proportioned and massive”. The dog's physical condition is also important, to match their job and ability to swim. The description of “very strongly muscled” has to show somewhere. Tail placement is a pet peeve of mine. The good news, is that I do not recall any of the tails snaping on top of the back. And there is the obvious movement, where I am looking for balance, a certain reach, drive and stamina. Along the down and back I was looking to see if the hocks were touching each other moving away and coming back to see if there wasn’t something funny going on in the front like elbowing out for example. Luckily, I did not see many of these things. The choices So now you know what I was looking for, let’s look at some of the winners. As many of you were able to see, I really enjoyed the winner’s dog - an interesting package of good size, nice head piece, great coat with dark pigmentation, and the dog was in good physical condition.

6

JUNE 2018JUNE 2018

The winner's bitch was very similar looking to the winner’s dog. She was well balanced and very deserving. The best puppy came from the classes over some specials. This young dog is a very nice package with good coat and a lovely rich brown color. His attitude and movement was above the other puppies. The line-up of specials was filled with quality dogs. Some difficult decisions came with the cuts, but the luxury of having so many quality dogs made it easier. As we moved toward the end a particular male dog started to capture my attention. He displayed assurance that he was in control. As for the girls, the line-up also had quality animals but three of them stood out. They were balanced with nice outline. Ultimately, one of them rose above the others one to be awarded BOSS. The award of merit males and females were all quality dogs, just not as complete as the breed dog. He started to shine from the moment he made the cut. He stood proud. I liked his proportion, size and overall condition. At the end, I kept moving him against the winner’s dog. The special male finally won the epic battle. He stayed together and was consistent throughout the competition. Judging veteran dogs is always an emotional moment. All of them were happy to be back in the ring remembering the good days when they were the centre of attention. The veteran winner came from the 9 to 11 year old female class. She was in a lovely condition and moved smoothly. Along the process of judging the Specialty, I repeatedly pulled out dogs and asked them to go around togheter. That was my way to express my appreciation to these particular dogs while providing the audience outside the ring an indication to pay attention to these individuals. Every time I did it, there was a specific reason for it, and it added an element of showmanship. After all, we are in a dog show, right? Finally As you can see I really enjoyed the dogs. I cannot remember any undeserving ones. Overall there was nothing fundamentally wrong with any of them. Congratulations to all of you. Your passion for the breed was nicely expressed by supporting this event. Thank you for this. I will have fond memories from this particular show, and especially the wonderful dogs.

PWDCC Waterlog www.pwdcc.org

Kathy Maguire, Sweeps Judge

The Veteran entry was just lovely, as I mentioned above. My Best in Sweeps won based on his beautiful head piece and roundness. He is a Canadian Best in Show winner, BIS GCH Deblon’s Rising Star To Pattedeau. He is also sound on his legs.

Treasurer Position Update Pat suggested that if the club wants to continue to use the Quickbooks accounting system that we 1) have the new Treasurer take a QB course and 2) we will also have to purchase the QB accounting software. It’s very important that we have someone that understands accounting and the application of accounting and bookkeeping standards to ensure the integrity of our books and records. Pat spoke with a possible candidate and asked that anyone seeking the position be proficient in Quickbooks. National Specialty Sharon will set up on Friday, Pat volunteered to help with the set up and bring the toques and duffle bags for gifts/prizes. Roslyn reported registrations of 30 for the party and 45 for the lunch. Booster A decision was made to not proceed with the Aurora District & Kennel Club Booster as it is too much to take on in addition to the Specialty. Sharon mentioned we typically don't do a Booster in a Specialty year. Rescue Patti McDonald wrote a job description about the position and will remain until we find a replacement.

Welcome Treasurer’s Report No report. Approval of May minutes is tabled to next meeting, as some members did not receive the file. PWDCOntario Merchandise Discussion of request for $2,500. to purchase merchandise in time for coming events. Sales have been robust but there may be a saturation point, so we may need to change up offering. A question on revenue: last year the P/L Statement showed $4875 income against expense $2798, but doesn’t reflect profit on cost as older merchandise may be included in sales. We need more information from Pat to understand actual profit/cost on merchandise. Projection of sales at the PWDCA National in Nova Scotia and possibly in Quebec, so there is a need to replenish stock. The committee is expected to track sales and report on profit. The Board will request that a yearly budget be established and requested in January of each year, can be amended, and a reconciliation after the PWDCA specialty should be presented to the Board to help plan for a yearly budget. We should check with Pat on status now and determine margins. Discussion on Merchandise program, merchandise is specific to a branch as per Branch policy. So a Nova Scotia b ranch would be set up with a separate ledger, if they wanted to have merchandise to support their events perhaps they purchase current inventory at the wholesale rate and sell and retain the profit? This needs more thought for future growth of our branches.

Discussion about the BC rescue and Val's help with that issue in the West. Karine will be making some ca lls to help sort it all out.

JUNE 2018 15

Not effective to ship merchandise across Canada so it was thought better to set up as a local branch function. At the Specialty, sales are credited to PWDOntario. At present there are no other branches to consider. Motion by Deirdre to approve expenditure of $2,500.00 to purchase additional PWDCOntario merchandise. seconded by Karen. Approved. Sharon will advise the Merchandise committee. The Board will ask Pat to review and work with the Merchandise committee to reconcile 2018 sales to date. BC Rescue Karine advised Sue Hopkins she is not a current PWDCC member and she is not the PWDCC BC Rescue representative. Val Berry is the PWDCC BC Rescue representative. The club web site and Waterlog will be updated to introduce Val. Complaint against a PWDCC member breeder A puppy owner of a PWDCC member breeder c ontacted a board member regarding the non-registration of her puppy. The client has been in contact with the CKC and her breeder. The breeder has until June 23 to rectify the situation to register the litter. The client would like to participate in dog events and needs a registration number. The Board recognizes this is a CKC matter, and until there is CKC action suspending her CKC membership the PWDCC has no standing to deal with a contractual issue between a breeder and a client. If the member is sanctioned by the CKC then her PWDCC membership would be suspended. The Board will confirm where the results of CKC discipline hearings are published. National Specialty Update Consensus is that the event was well run and people in attendance were very happy. Preliminary reconciliation shows we lost ab out $750.00 due to the hospitality event which is an expense that you can’t really recoup on. The judges who attended the Judges Education were very happy with the information and felt they learned many finer points on judging PWDs. We feel we should continue this momentum and have Judges Education on site at every PWDCC event. Perhaps having on-site mentoring at the PWDCOntario Water Trial would b e a good idea. Sharon will investigate further with the WT committee, it may too short notice to have it this year. We will investigate suitable presenters in different locations. We discussed other breeder/handlers long associated with the breed as a possibility. The guideing principle is to select well respected individuals that will attract CKC judges. The video taken at the Specialty will be edi ted and combined with the Judges’ Education presentation to create the online Judges’ Education program for CKC judges to access in a password protected area of the Club website.

JUNE 2018JUNE 2018

Regional Specialty Discussion on perhaps hosting a Regional Specialty next year in Quebec, conformation only, boosting any performance events that the all breed club hosts. Judges' Education would be a component. Location sugges tions include Brome (1hour 10 min from Montreal), Hochelaga (in Montreal), SDG or Cornwall (both in Cornwall). A Regional could be hosted by the APWDC also, or perhaps the Alberta club would take on the National in 2020. Even Booster shows could provide ringside Judges mentoring. Boat/Equipment Maintenance Andy Gamache and Roy Vokes produced a comprehensive memo for maintenance and care of PWDCC Boat/Eq uipment. The memo will be re-distributed to the Board for voting to institute this memo as Policy. PWDCOntario Water Camps The weather did not cooperate but there was a good turnout of new people in the Junior group. The Working and Courier people had lots of time to practise. The new people from Quebec and Nova Scotia, learned a lot, merchandise was sold by Frances and Carolynne, the instructors Cathy, Lorraine, Brawna and the Vokes did their usual amazing job. Quebec Branch There is interest in Quebec of forming a branch. Karine will send out an email to all Quebec members advising them how to get started. Nova Scotia Branch The group in NS have some questions, they are having their first meeting with Andy June 18. Issues in launching their branch: should they engage in fundraising for themselves? Wh en Ontario formed a branch in 2006 they received half the profit of the National Specialty to seed their events, merchandise was purchased for sale for ongoing revenue. How will NS acquire equipment? Andy will report back to the Board after the meeting.

AGM request for Committees Suggest: Conformation/Performance Event Committee, Membership Committee, Breeder Committee We currently have a Water Trial Com mittee (Cathy, Lorraine, Greg), Merchandise Committee (Carolynne, Frances), Rescue Committee (Jennifer, Val), Judges Education Committee (Sharon, Roslyn, Deirdre) Discussion around creating committees for Conformation/Performance Events, Membership, and Breeder. Mandates, who determines this, the Board or the members, or ask the members for suggestions but the Board oversees and approves. Sharon and Ros lyn will write committee outline to publish in the next Waterlog. Membership Committee Survey to determine membership wants/needs. Retention of membership, converting puppy mem-bers to full members by personal contact and followup at the renewal period Breeder Committee Keep breeders informed of new health issues, testing. What does a good breeder do? Breeder referral program, list. One Board member on e ach of the Club committees. Goal/functions of the Board in June Waterlog with offered Committee structure and who to contact if interested. If there are no volunteers, then the Board will announce that. Motion by Karen to adjourn. Seconded by Sharon. Approved. Next meeting Tuesday July 17, 8pm EST.

Breeder Referral List Tabled for the next meeting. AGM Minutes Mindy will check if AGM minutes should be distributed before they are approved. The Board currently doesn’t have Policy around handling discussions on Social Media. We have to let members know that they should contact the Board directly and the Board will respond directly and privately to their concerns or have their concerns raised at the next meeting for discussion as appropriate. There is a Board group email link on the Officers and Contacts page, this link will be made more prominent and also put on the membership page. The link will be published in the next Waterlog and also an article reiterating the function/ work of the Board explaining the link. The board went in camera for discussion, the board came out of in camera discussion.

PWDCC 2017 Annual General Meeting Minutes Tuesday, December 12, 2017 8:00 p.m. EST Present Frances Berman Tracy Brown Jennifer Byers Lori Crouch Roslyn Eskind Andy Gamache Donna Gottdenker Deirdre Hall Audrey Hawthorne Cathy Hick Carolynne Issa Sharon Lapstra Karen Matthews Lesley Millar Mindy Selby Karine Simard Joanne Skalos Pat Vokes Cheryl Wheatley Lorraine Wilson Welcome Note and President’s Message Sharon Lapstra we lcomed everyone and thanked them for their time. She also thanked the many volunteers for their hard work over the past year. Sharon announced she will be stepping down as President at the end of 2017. The AGM is a time to reflect and also look forward as a National Breed Club. The accomplishments of the past year will be reviewed and then we’ll look forward to 2018 and 2019. Solidification and clarity a round our recommended breeding practices and standards: The PWDCC now has the same standards as the PWDCA. This provides continuity throughout North America. The values underpinning these changes are to protect and preserve our breed. The present board has been firmly committed to this value. All officers of the board including the Ontario Branch are required to adhere to these standards of practice a nd ethics (as outlined in our “Policies & Procedures”) in their breeding programs and ringside behavior or any event we are attending. Failure to do so will create ineligibility for office. This is the same standard that is currently being held in the USA. We successfully increased our membership primarily through the changes we implemented with the puppy introduction program. For $1. breeders can regist er new puppy buyers as PWDCC members for one year. This membership is non-voting but provides an opportunity for membership renewal after 1 year with voting priviledges. We hope this hooks the new puppy buyer into the PWDCC Community. Our goal for 2017 was 100 new puppy members which we have achieved. If we can grow our membership by 10% each year, this will provide a healthy influx of new ideas, volunteers, etc. into our organization. It also keeps the organization financially viable In 2018 we would like to target breeders who have litters frequently, it’s important to get their assistance to help target new puppy buyers and build on our organization.

PWDCC Waterlog www.pwdcc.org

New Programs that have been offered: Walk for Rescue: the intent was to provide and build resources for Rescue within the club. This new event con sistently raises approximately $1000 each year.

Question & Comments Lorraine Wilson asked if the Secretary also played a role as Editor of The Waterlog. Tracy responded that they are two separate positions and we are still recruiting for a new Editor.

PWDCC Achievement Program: recognizing all performance activities of our dogs and was conceived and coordinated by Karen Matthews.

Treasurer’s Report Pat Vokes has been the Treasurer and a Director since January 1 2013. She is in her third and final term which will end December 31, 2018. In addition to being the Treasurer she is also a liaison to the Ontario Branch assisting them with their budgets, merchandise and helping whenever needed at the water camps. Pat also serves on the Water Trial Committee.

Judges Education Seminar: In 2014 Danik Dancause made a presentation in Moncton, N.B. to Canadian Judges Association. This was very successful we received very positive feedback from the judges who were present at the semi nar. The seminar was based on the breed standard. We are currently working on an online judge’s seminar that will be posted by Summer 2018. This will have the capability to be accessed by Canadian Judges so they are able to watch a series of presentations including our current PowerPoint presentation along with video of dogs moving. Danik will also be examining some of the dogs while providing inform ation as per the breed standard as he examines them. The Best of Breed winner along with Best of Opposite, Best of Sweeps and Best of Opposite in Sweeps winners from the 2018 PWDCC National Specialty will be featured in the seminar as well. We maintained our financial viability Pat Vokes will review our financials in more detail. Our membership needs to be aware of some of our major expenses within the club. Examples: The Waterlog, insurance, awards, communication expenses etc. Most bills are paid by our membership fees. In 2015 The Waterlog went digital, this was a cost saving strategy that has worked. Merchandise Program: Merchandise was revamped in 2017 by Frances Berman and Carolynne Issa. Sales have been on the move and this has helped keep our club financially stable and viable. Public Educatio n: There is an article on our website helping people ask the right questions when buying a puppy. The Trudeau puppy incident with our involvement helped raise awareness of responsible breeding practices. The board continues to be committed to educate the public. Questions & Comments Lorraine Wilson asked what strategies were in place for achieving the goals with the Puppy Membership Program goal of a chieving 100 signups for 2017; goal for 2018 hasn’t been set yet. A new committee will hopefully be created to focus on this. Lorraine Wilson also asked if there was a committee for the Judges Seminar and what are we trying to accomplish with this. There is a committee in place and the new board will be responsible in completing and rolling out the seminar. Lots of discussion was held on having more peopl e besides just Board members participate on the committee for the completion of the Online Judges Seminar. Anyone who is interested should send Sharon an email so we can come up with a way to expand the committee. As new President, Karine will make this a priority moving forward in 2018.

In 2017 the Ontario Branch ordered new merchandise and we had sales of over $4,800.00 resulting in a profit of over $2,000.00 Many thanks to Frances Berman, Carolynne Issa and Cathy Gadd and everyone involved in ordering and managing the merchandise Question & Comments No questions were brought forward Achievement Program Karen Matthews reported that the program has been in e xistence for 2 years. We have 17 categories with 15 categories having badges issued. In 2017 we added the “tricks” category which is included in the 17. The categories not issued are tracking and dock diving. In total 144 badges have been issued. 106 in 2016 and 38 in 2017. 2016 was the inaugural year and members ordered badges for several dogs representing several years’ accomplishments. She believes that 2017 to be more representative of what future years will look like. As a percentage categories are: Water Conformation Rally Obedience Agility

of badges issued the highest 42% 17% 14% 12% 8%

Typical budget is $150000 annually. In 2017 we spent $1477.99. The 2018 budget will likely be cut in half as we have a good inventory of badges. Question & Comments Lorraine Wilson asked what we do with the revenue. Pat Vokes responded that any revenue goes back into the club, but this area will likely represent an expense. Evenso, the Achievement Program is something that we feel will help encourage participation.

Communication Report Tracy Brown took over position as Secretary in 2015. Her main role is working with the executive co mmunicating information via email to membership. She will remain on the board for 2018.

JUNE 2018 17

Rescue Sharon Lapstra presented Patti MacDonald’s report. 2017 saw 20 applications for Rescue and several calls regarding potential rescue dogs. Only one dog actually came in to rescue. Diamond was bred by a non-member breeder and came to us through another breed rescue program. She was placed/ adopted into a home who already had a PWD and her story was also profiled in one of The Waterlog issues this yea r. Sadly a dog that was previously surrendered to Rescue and rehomed was euthanized by the owners. They had done a lot of work with the dog but were unable to help her as she had lunged and bitten several times. They contacted PWDCC very late in the process and had already made the decision. Most applicants are not suitable for a difficult rescue (like the last two we have received) as they have no previo us dog experience or young children and are not able to deal with issues that adult dogs have when being surrendered to Rescue. Patti will speak via phone call to these applicants to see if they’d like to start fresh with a puppy. She will direct them to the website to refer to the Buyer Beware articles. Patti wishes to resign as Vice President and Rescue Coordinator. The board will be looking for a repla cement to help with Rescue in 2018. Question & Comments No questions were brought forward. Acclamation and Introduction of the Board Slate for 2018 – 2019 President: Karine Simard (Quebec) Vice President: Karen Matthews (Ontario) Communication Secretary: Tracy Brown (Alberta) Treasurer: Pat Vokes (Ontario) Director/Past President: Sharon Lapstra (Ontario) Director: Jennifer Buyers (Quebec) Director: Deidra Hall (Ontario) Director: Andy Gamache (Alberta) Director: Mindy Selby (Alberta) Director: B.C. vacant

GOALS FOR 2018 – 2019 PWDCC BOARD Continue to increase memberships through promotion and Puppy Introduction Program targeting higher volume breeders- Implement New Member Committee to help address issues. Implement Committee Structure for all board pro jects for 2018 - We’ve attempted this in the past but it’s time to focus on this for the viability of the club. Maintain financial viability through promotion of merchandise sales and increased membership. Continue to educate the public about the breed and responsible breeding practices. Complete the online Judges Seminar. Host National Specialty in Ontario and set the location for 2020. Maintain current programming: Land/water training workshops Water trials Walk for Rescue PWDCC Confirmation Boosters Find a Rescue Coordinator and develop rescue resources across the country. Find a new Waterlog Editor and begin to publish parts of The Waterlog in both languages, for example the Presidents letter will be in both languages.

New Business National Specialty for 2018 Premium list will be out in January Redoing th e platform of the website right now so we can get the trophy donation page and everything on new website. Silent Auction Danik Dancause is the specialty judge and Kathy McLemore Maquire is the sweeps judge. Lunch will be held after the Specialty. Will host judges education and the filming of Judging Seminar. Question & Comments Kathy Hick suggested we try to have a get–together in the evening rather than d uring the day as people are busy during the day with other activities at the show. Sharon commented that they are looking into a Meet & Greet in the evening. Audrey Hawthorne asked if there was going to be performance events tied into the Specialty. Sharon commented that there will be, and it will include Agility, just no Water as it’s too early in the season. A Superdog award will also be handed out. 201 8 AGM Trying to establish date for next meeting. Pat would like to see this coincide with the financials, so possibly Spring 2019. Carolynne Issa would like to bring up the breeder member program for discussion, as she wishes the program be re-instated. Sharon replied that this could be discussed at the next board meeting. We would require someone to look after it, which will require a considerable commi tment. Motion by Sharon Lapstra to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Tracy Brown.

Question & Comments No questions were brought forward.
