President’s Message Results of the 2024 PWDCC National Specialty PWDCC CKC Scent Detection Trial Results Results of the PWDCC Water Trial hosted by APWDC PWDCC Board Minutes Performance Pups Upcoming Events Shopping
The PWDCC is continueing its trial of the Breeders’ List on pwdcc.org
The Board is proposing a trial of a Breeders’ List under the following criteria:
• Member for at least one year (as per litter listing)
• All litters posted on the Available Puppies webpage (where all health testing is provided) ($20.00 per litter)
• All puppies sold with New Puppy Membership ($1.00 per puppy, note breeders have the option of having the puppy owner pay for this)
• All puppies registered with the CKC by the breeder
• When a bitch is owned by two or more breeders, all breeders have to be members of the PWDCC in good standing. The exception to this rule is if the co-breeder is a resident of the United States or other international location.
• Any stud dog owned or co-owned by someone on the breeder list must only breed with breeders where the bitch is fully health tested
Non-compliance, checked by CKC stud dog directory released typically in August the following year, will result in immediate removal from the PWDCC Breeder List with no refunds.
NOTICE FOR BREEDERS
Recommended tests for breeding:
Annual CAER certification.
CAER is deferred for 2024 due to Ophthalmologists are not available to provide the test except in clinics where available.
Non Compliance consists of:
• Not reporting a litter.
• Not individually registering puppies in a litter that is registered.
• Not registering a litter
Additionally, “oops” litters, an accidental breeding, where health testing is not complete will be handled
• 1st oops litter, must be reported
• 2nd oops litter, removed from the list for minimum of 6 months or the remainder of the year.
• 3rd opps litter, no longer eligible.
The Board approved some modifications to the Buyer Beware section of the website, removing the number of litters considered to be ethical.
In the PWDCC Code of Ethics section 2 Breeders: “register all tests in the PWDCA Health and Litter Log (https://hll.pwdca.org/tblmember/sign_in).”
The PWDCA HLL database is non-functioning and is being replaced by the PWDCA with the Berner Garde system. Once the new system is operational, the Board will review PWDCC’s participation in the database.

ThePresident’sLetter
Hello Everyone,,
As summer activities come to a close, it feels as though the season has flown by. Our 2024 highlight event, the PWDCC National Specialty, was a resounding success despite the challenges we faced. You’ll find reports and photos from the event included here.
We have received all water trial information from Ontario and British Columbia, and reports and photos from Alberta are also included in this issue. Reports from Ontario and BC will follow in the next update. Congratulations to everyone involved in organizing, volunteering, and competing in this season’s activities!
Now, onto some important news. As many of you know, Roslyn Eskind has been our website designer and webmaster extraordinaire. She has also served as our graphic designer, Waterlog editor, and much more. After over two decades of dedicated service, Roslyn has informed the Board that she will be stepping down at the end of the year. We deeply appreciate all she has done and thank her for agreeing to support the new Board in 2024. Roslyn leaves behind big shoes to fill and will be greatly missed.
We need volunteers to take on the various roles previously filled by Roslyn, and I’m reaching out to all of you for assistance. In accordance with CKC National club requirements, we must publish a quarterly newsletter. Without CKC approval, we risk losing our National Club status, as well as regional clubs, water trials, scent trials, boosters, and the National Specialty.
If you have any interest or experience in website management, content sourcing, editing, or related tasks, please contact me at cathy@pwdcc.org for more information. Your involvement in forming a media committee would be invaluable, and I believe we can assemble a fantastic team to keep our National Club thriving.
You will soon receive the Zoom invite for our AGM on October 29, along with annual committee reports. I encourage you to attend and look forward to seeing you there!
Catherine, Catherine Gadd PWDCC President cathy@pwdcc.org

Sweepstakes
Judge Molly Speckhardt
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the PWDCC for inviting me to just their 2024 National Specialty Sweepstakes this year! I was thrilled to be a part of your show and see so many beautiful dogs! As i had said before, whatever you are doing in Canada, you are spot on! The dogs that I judged were in beautiful condition and presented very well! Your heads are beautiful, your bone and substance is wonderful all still being in a moderate package! The balance and movements were spectacular and their temperaments were the best I’ve ever seen!
Thank you so much to the exhibitors, owners and breeders who took the time and energy to present their dogs to me. It was such a pleasure!
Sincerely,
Molly Speckhardt

Alberta PWDCC Water Trials
August 16-18, Dickson Dam
Three years ago in pursuit of my goal to become a water trial judge, the PWDCA Water Trial Committee allowed me to do an observational assignment in Canada (a first, and only) under Amanda Ford at Dickson Dam with APWDC. The encouragement and support I received from the Alberta members was heartwarming and propelled me along the journey. To be invited to return and judge their trials this year; priceless!
I was greeted warmly at the airport by Shirley Milnes, Dali and puppy Nixxie, who chauffeured me around for the next four days without complaint. There were several hours of this and not a peep out of her dogs; a foreshadowing of the great handling I witnessed over the coming days both in and out of the water from all participants!
Every water trial site has it’s unique characteristics and challenges. Dickson Dam is no exception but what could have been strong winds, waves, too many speed boats and floating timber, was not to be. Calm seas and misty mornings set the stage for a fabulous weekend with our magnificent breed on display.
If you live in Alberta you are faced with three strikes against you when it comes to training for water tests; one is the climate (a very short summer), two is the temperature of the water (cold until July) and three, finding accessible water nearby! Despite these challenges we had a very good pass rate (see the posted results), great understanding of the rules and an absolutely awesome group of volunteers! Kudos to the water trial committee lead by Chair Barb McCaffrey, new secretary Christine McKinnon and volunteer co-ordinator Dawn Fleming who all did an amazing job keeping things running smoothly with nary a hiccup. Thank you committee members Pat Belliveau and Denyse Martin for assisting and managing my itinerary. It takes a village!
It was my distinct privilege to judge three days at Dickson Dam. I’m thrilled to have witnessed great teamwork and gentle handling throughout the weekend. I still get goosebumps watching the joyful pleasure our dogs exude working for our approval. Aren’t we fortunate to experience this bond?
Thank you APWDC for this honour and for treating me so generously. Good luck to you all in your pursuits with your best teammates in and out of the water and remember; the Joy is in the Journey!
I hope to see you all again very soon at the water’s edge! Lorie Crouch

In Memoriam
Linda Propp
We are saddened to announce the sudden passing of Linda Anderson Propp on June 2, 2024. She leaves behind a huge hole in the hearts of her family and friends, who will miss her passion, intelligence and quick wit.
Linda leaves behind her husband Rob, brother Colin, sister in-law Rena, mother-in-law Joyce, sister-in-laws Lori (Andy), Lynn (Bob), brothers-in-law Bruce (Tess), Mark, nephews Kyle (Alexis), Kurtis (Laurie), Erik, Matthew (Ginny), Spencer and nieces Megan (James), Chelsey (Justin) and Jenna.
Linda was born in Calgary March 16, 1959, to Nan and James Anderson. The family relocated in April of 1959 to Edmonton where she grew up. Linda was always an Edmontonian at heart and a lifelong supporter of the Oilers. The family were members of the Scottish Society where she learned to curl, studied tap dancing and was an avid reader. She was an honours student, attending Queen Elizabeth Composite High School and then graduating from the University of Alberta with a B.Comm. She articled as a Chartered Accountant with an Edmonton firm, passing the uniform final exam in 1983, and in April 2024 received her forty-year pin.
She loved camping and traveling, whether it was to Yellowknife to visit Colin, Rena and the boys, Angkor Wat or Radium Hot Springs. Living and working in Whitehorse for several years enhanced her love of nature.
Dogs and a love of dogs were a big part of Linda’s life. Max, a Cocker Spaniel was the first to join the household, followed by Piper a Standard Poodle who brought Linda into the dog world
of competition and training and finally Portuguese Water Dogs which added water work training to the list. She loved rally and obedience in Canadian Kennel Club, American Kennel Club, and Canadian Rally Organization and excelled in every dog sport she put her mind to, from scent detection to parkour. Her passion for Water Work was unparalleled, both for her own dogs and for supporting those with an interest.
Her devotion to her beautiful companions was undoubtedly a reciprocal relationship – they gave her as much love as she gave them. She had a very special love for puppies - watching litters grow, and always eager to lend a helping hand in puppy grooming. Linda taught us all so much about dogs, from training and grooming to the benefits of diatomaceous soil and chicken wing ‘treats’.
Linda was not only a cherished member but a strong supporter of the dog community. Her quick wit, self-declared Type A personality, and attention to detail made her an asset to clubs. These were the same characteristics that made her an invaluable member of the Wilde Advisory Group for fifteen years. Her laughter and fun-loving spirit was always present even when she could be dealing with the seriousness of a complex accounting or tax matter.
Linda had a heart of gold, and although a rather serious person, loved to laugh, mentor and lend a hand whenever she could.
She has left her (paw) print on many hearts and will be joyfully remembered.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was moved by Lorie and second by Jennifer. The meeting was adjourned at 8:19 pm EDT.
How exciting is it when you get a new performance puppy and all the things you’ve learned since your last puppy are just bursting our of your brain ready to put into practice!
But steady on my friend! Puppies are delicate, their growth plates aren’t closed until 14-22 months depending on breed type and whether they are desexed, so treating them like an adult during this time is going to lead tears further on down the track.
“But they do worse on their own” - that’s not a rationale for training and physically interacting with a puppy/young dog as an adult. And, it’s typically not a true statement either - what a dog does on its own and what you ask a dog to do are 2 different things mentally and physically, so let’s pop that excuse away.
As outlined by Dr Chris Zink, Sports Medicine expert, we first have to understand they simply are not as strong as adults, they have softer bones, weaker muscles and the thing that gets them into a lot of trouble is poor co-ordination.
Inappropriate exercise as a baby can contribute to medical challenges such as hip and elbow dysplasia, osteoarthritis and bone deformities.
No full height jumping until growth plate closure. Agility groundwork “foundations” can occur from 8 weeks but that doesn’t include wrapping, 2/on/2/off contacts, repetitive actions etc.
Jump training - no jumps above the wrist up until 4 months. Jump training at or below the elbow from 6 months.
Jump training above elbow after growth plat closure. Weave pole training after growth plate closure.

Although these dogs can compete at 12 months, ideally they would not be jumping until around 14 months months and no box turns until growth plate closure. This sport definitely needs minimum age reassessment.
Your Vet can check them on x-ray when you have your dogs hips & elbows x-rayed at around 18 months of age before you head to your first trial. If you’re not x-raying which I strongly advise you to do, then you would assume an entire dogs growth plates are closed at around 14 months and a de-sexed dog at around 22 months - small dogs can close youngeryour Vet can guide you.
If you’re ever unsure what is an isn’t appropriate, check with a professional.

Looking for a new Waterlog
Editor/Graphic Designer/ and Wordpress
Website master
Your skill set includes a history or thirst for knowledge of the breed, reviewing our historical tomes: Kathryn Braund’s bible, The Complete Portuguese Water Dog, etc. A general knowledge of dog events from Conformation to performance events, Water Work, Agility, Obedience, etc. and key events throughout the year. An ability to scrounge sources like Facebook, CKC yearly results, Canuck Dogs, Dogshow.ca etc. to find photos and results.
The current format for the Waterlog is created in Quark Express, however, that can of course change to Adobe InDesign or even Microsoft Word.
The two functions can be split with the Editor sourcing the articles/photos and the Designer putting it together. We’ve done that in the past.
Website maintenance of Wordpress pwdcc.org. A knowledge and experience working with the backend of the club site, updating occurs for the Events pages regularly and text as needed. We do have a professional web master for major fixes and changes.
All club communication positions require confidentiality and you report to a liason person on the Board.
Contact Roslyn Eskind, roslyn@pwdcc.org for more information or Catherine Gadd, cathy@pwdcc.org to express interest.
